THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Giving without getting taken… I was at camp for 30 hours last Wed-Thurs. During that time, I got four phone calls asking for donations: for women with can-cer, for volunteer firefighters, and I forget the other two. Knowing that most of these are scams and the other callers keep most of the money they collect on behalf of the charity, I either hang up or tell them I don’t donate over the phone. And who can count the number of “urgent appeal” letters and e-mails we all have to sort through? I don’t respond to these either. I like to donate to someone that I know really needs it and is going to use my gift the way I expect them to. In a perfect world, it would be someone I know well and care about. The fact that we have to do charity is a given. Jesus made that pretty clear: “I was hungry

and you gave me to eat…” But He leaves it up to us to decide to whom, when and how much. Since we are responsible for distributing our “surplus wealth” to those who need it more than we do, and since we can’t be certain how our gift will impact the recipient, it is often more prudent to trust in reliable “brokers”. NH Catholic Charities in one such broker. Virtually every penny goes to programs targeting hunger, homeless-ness, addiction, family crisis, and elderly services. Also, all the money stays here in NH, helping our friends and neighbors. Since NHCC is an agency of our diocese, the connection between our gift and God’s compassion is pretty direct. I still say that the best charity happens when you get personally in-volved in helping someone who needs you. But Cath-olic Charities runs a close second.
