Someone in the crowd said to Je-sus, "Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me." He replied to him, "Friend, who ap-pointed me as your judge and arbi-trator?" Then he said to the crowd, "Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one's life does not consist of possessions." - Lk 12:13-15 Readings for the Week of July 31, 2016 Sunday: Eccl 1:2; 2:21-23/Ps 90:3-6, 12-14, 17/Col 3:1-5, 9-11/ Lk 12:13-21 Monday: Jer 28:1-17/Ps 119:29, 43, 79-80, 95, 102/Mt 14:13-21 Tuesday: Jer 30:1-2, 12-15, 18-22/Ps 102:16-21, 29, 22-23/ Mt 14:22-36 or 15:1-2, 10-14 Wednesday: Jer 31:1-7/Jer 31:10-13/Mt 15:21-28 Thursday: Jer 31:31-34/Ps 51:12-15, 18-19/Mt 16:13-23 Friday: Na 2:1, 3; 3:1-3, 6-7/Dt 32:35-36, 39, 41/Mt 16:24-28 Saturday: Dn 7:9-10, 13-14/Ps 97:1-2, 5-6, 9/2 Pt 1:16-19/ Lk 9:28b-36 Next Sunday: Wis 18:6-9/Ps 33:1, 12, 18-22/Heb 11:1-2, 8-19 or 11:1-2, 8-12/Lk 12:32-48 or 12:35-40 ©Liturgical Publications Inc

Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo Statement Regarding Catholics in Public Office. The Catholic Church makes its position very clear as it pertains to the protection of human life, social justice initiatives, and the importance of family life. From the very beginning, Catholic teaching informs us that every human life is sacred from conception until natural death. The right to life is a fundamental, human right for the unborn and any law denying the unborn the right to life is unequivocally unjust. Legislative issues pertaining to these matters are advocated on behalf of myself and Bishop Loverde, of the Diocese of Arlington, before the Virginia General Assembly, U.S. Congress, and with state and federal agencies and administrations through the Virginia Catholic Conference, a public policy advocacy organization. Through this organization, elected officials in Virginia are aware of the Church’s positions on such important issues. We continue to maintain an open communication with public officials who make on-going decisions impacting critical, moral and social is-sues. This is a responsibility I take seriously, along with my brother bishops, to reach out to public leaders to explain Catholic principles and encourage them to protect human life and dignity in all decisions they make. We always pray for our Catholic leaders that they make the right choice, act in the best judgment and in good conscience, knowing the values and teachings of the Catholic Church. It is the duty of all Catholics, no matter their profession, to decide through an upright and informed conscience as to their worthiness to receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.

“Ad maiorem Dei gloriam.” This is Latin and translates “for the greater glory of God.” This motto is the famous cornerstone phrase of the religious order founded by St Ignatius Loyola, whose feast day is celebrated on July 31. The religious order is a famous one, the Jesuits. The Jesuits were originally under the leadership of St Ignatius and were designed to be the Pope ‘special forces.’ The Jesuits sought to be highly educated in all fields of study so that, should the Pope need an expert he could trust in mathematics, astronomy, history, or any other field, he could be sure that there was a Jesuit who was well trained in that field and could advise him, all the while maintaining an allegiance and fidel-ity to the truth of the Catholic faith. Did you know that Pope Francis is a Jesuit? The Jesuits have had a very significant influence on the Catholic Church as a whole. Their zeal, intense training, and special promise of obedience to the Holy Father, the Pope, have allowed them to operate as the Popes elite in order to accomplish very many important tasks. In spite of the amazing work the Jesuits have done over the centuries, they have also had a degree of controversy surrounding a certain num-ber of its members at times, some of them facing removal from public service at times or even worse… on occasion the whole Jesuit religious order was suppressed by the Catholic Church (that means basically shut down) because of what the church perceived was a threat posed by the order at the time. As with most religious orders, and as with most parishes, the Jesuits are a mix of faithful men who seek to serve God and His Church, as well as those who have possibly been too influenced by the world and have performed actions that have caused a degree scandal (I recall reading that Georgetown University, a Jesuit college, recently invited the chair of Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the country, to offer a lecture at the university and was not asked even one question that challenged her position; this seems like being cowardly, not simply seeking dialogue). I am reminded of scripture which says, ‘to whom much is given much will be expected’ (Lk 12:48). My sense of things is this: God gives gifts to us so that we can do good with those gifts to glorify Him and serve Him. That is what the phrase means…’for the greater glory of God.’ But I think there is a flip side to this. Firstly, indeed, the more we have been given, the more is expected of us and the more we can do good for God. That being said, on the flip side, I also believe that for the one to whom God gives more, suppose that person decides NOT to give those gifts back to God for His glory, then that person will end up doing MORE damage to the will and plan of God than a person who had not been given those gifts. The more sharp, and talented, and harder worker you are, the more you can do good for God. But also, on the flip side, if you allow yourself, the more you will do bad against God. This may sound bad, so don’t take me the wrong way, but have you ever met a young person and thought, that person is either going to be the president of the US or a mob boss, because of the potential they have for greatness? Al Capone could have been a great business leader or government official had he not turned bad. Talent and gifts are going to impel people far, far into the realm of good or far into the realm of evil. In the case of these individuals, moderation is usually not an op-tion. This is the case for the Jesuits. They have a history of some of the greatest and most amazing saints, who have baptized and converted thousand and millions, spreading salvation in Christ to the furthest lands. But they also have, under their leadership, given significant of-fense to the very same mission. This is because they are exceptional. When they are faithful, they are unparalleled in their ability to do good for God. When are not faithful, they cause a greater degree of scandal than the average joe (no offence to anyone named joe). The lesson then is this: whatever gifts we have, we must be sure they are being used for the glory of God. And if we have been given more gifts than others in certain ways, then we need to be extra sure we are using them for the glory of God. Fr. Rossi Help Needed!!
