HAVE YOU LOST A LOVED ONE? ARE YOU FINDING IT HARD

TO COPE?

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP

SEPTEMBER 7—OCTOBER 19 When grieving the loss of a loved one, individuals may feel overwhelmed and lonely. Adapting to life after the death of a loved one often takes more time than we expect. Saint Joseph Parish offers a Bereavement Support Group led by parishioner John Fuhrman and Sr. Josefina Morales for our brothers and sisters who have lost a loved one through death. (Anyone interested, including parishioners from other churches, are welcome.) The purpose of the group is to provide opportunities for mutual healing in a confidential, educational and spiritual environment. The group will meet for 7 weeks on Fridays (7:00-9:00 pm) from September 7—October 19 in the Parish Life Center (268 Grove St, Oradell, NJ—behind the lower school building), If you would like to participate, or if you need more information, please contact our parish secretary Gerry at 201-261-0148.

TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ SEPTEMBER 9, 2018

STATEMENT OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS OF NEW JERSEY

(PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED ON AUGUST 15, 2018)

New Jersey’s Roman Catholic Bishops acknowledge that media accounts of the details contained in Pennsylvania’s grand jury report show a heartbreaking departure from our fundamental belief in the dignity and value of every child. As a Church, our calling remains unchanged - to help children in our care encounter leaders who exemplify God’s commandment to love and protect the most vulnerable.

As Bishops, we hold that every parent and every child deserve a safe environment to learn and explore their faith. Every space where teaching, worship, and ministry take place must provide this safe environment. There must be no compromise on this principle. The children entrusted to our care are treasures.

We cannot undo the actions of the past, but we shall remain vigilant to ensure that not one child will ever be abused on our watch.

New Jersey’s Catholic dioceses have conducted some 380,000 criminal background checks of all diocesan and parish personnel who have regular contact with minors. In addition, all Catholic dioceses have integrated a comprehensive program of reporting abuse to civil authorities, compensating and counseling victims, and implementing rigorous protocols and training for more than 2.3 million clergy, employees, volunteers and children.

We thank law enforcement agencies, child protection advocates and victims themselves who have helped us move beyond compliance to creating the safest environments for learning and worship. We are deeply thankful for those who have joined our efforts to extend both healing and hope to every victim and their family. We renew our commitment to foster healing and seek forgiveness.

We urge anyone who was abused by clergy to come forward to civil authorities.

Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R. Archbishop, Archdiocese of Newark

Most Reverend David M. O’Connell, C.M. Bishop, Diocese of Trenton

Most Reverend Dennis J. Sullivan Bishop, Diocese of Camden

Most Reverend Arthur J. Serratelli Bishop, Diocese of Paterson

Most Reverend James F. Checchio Bishop, Diocese of Metuchen

“BEHOLD THE WOOD OF THE CROSS” A Service of Prayer,

Recognition and Hope Cardinal Tobin invites all the faithful of the Archdiocese of Newark to a special evening of prayer in reparation for, and healing of, all those impacted by the abuse crisis, particularly the victims, and all of us who make up the Body of Christ.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14 The Feast of the Exhaltation of the Cross

7:30 PM Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart

(89 Ridge Street, Newark, NJ 07104)

Saint Joseph’s Fr. Anthony will be attending. We hope many of our own parishioners will be able to join him for this very special prayer experience. If you would like to carpool, please see Fr. Anthony or call the Parish Office/Rectory at 201-261-0148 so we can help with arrangements.

HOW TO REPORT ABUSE The Archdiocese takes very seriously any and all allegations of sexual misconduct by members of the clergy, Religious and lay staff of the Archdiocese. We encourage anyone with knowledge of such to inform us immediately so that we may take appropriate action to protect others and provide support to any victim. Individuals who wish to report an allegation may do so by calling the Archdiocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection at 201-407-3256.

THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS FEAST DAY—SEPTEMBER 14

Early in the fourth century, Saint Helena, mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine, went to Jerusalem in search of the holy places of Christ’s life. She razed the second-century Temple of Aphrodite, which tradition held was

built over the Savior’s tomb, and her son built the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher on that spot. During the excavation, workers found three crosses. Legend has it that the one on which Jesus died was identified when its touch healed a dying woman. The cross immediately became an object of veneration. At a Good Friday celebration in Jerusalem toward the end of the fourth century, according to an eyewitness, the wood was taken out of its silver container and placed on a table together with the inscription Pilate ordered placed above Jesus’ head: Then “all the people pass through one by one; all of them bow down, touching the cross and the inscription, first with their foreheads, then with their eyes; and, after kissing the cross, they move on.” To this day, the Eastern Churches, Catholic and Orthodox alike, celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on the September anniversary of the basilica’s dedication.

you create all things in this world as gifts for your created beings.

This day is made holy by the presence of new life,

made real by the love of spouses and their collaboration with you.

On this day bless all grandparents and their grandchildren. May they both praise you

for their place in the world. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen

40 DAYS FOR LIFE SEPTEMBER 28 —NOVEMBER 6

40 Days for Life is the largest internationally coordinated pro-life

mobilization in history, helping people in local communities end abortion through prayer and fasting, community outreach, and peaceful vigils. The 40-day campaign tracks Biblical history, where God used 40-day periods to transform individuals, communities … and the entire world. From Noah in the flood to Moses on the mountain to the disciples after Christ’s resurrection, it is clear that God sees the transformative value of His people accepting and meeting a 40-day challenge. If you can give an hour of prayer each week during our next 40-day period, or would just like to learn more, please call Margaret Scully at 201-805-0937 or email her at [email protected] We pray across the street from the abortion facility located at 10 Zabriskie Street in Hackensack on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm.

NEW HOPE PREGNANCY RESOURCE

CENTER —HERE NEXT WEEKEND

Representatives from New Hope Pregnancy Resource Center will be at Saint Joseph next weekend to talk about their ministry to single first-time mothers and their babies. Established in 1985 New Hope provides subsidies for housing, day care, education, and counseling. Founded on the premise that all human life is precious, the volunteers at New Hope understand the upset, indeed the often challenging aspects, of an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy. However, their conviction that each new life is unique, unrepeatable, and sacred helps them guide mothers in making truly wise short-range and long-range decisions. You can help support the mission of New Hope with your donation and your prayers. Thank you for your generosity.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?” (James 2:5) What is more important – being rich in faith or rich in possessions? Society teaches us that possessions are most important. God teaches a different lesson. When we are rich in faith, we keep God first in all things and realize that material things really don’t matter and that it’s more important to share with those who have less.
