The Parish of Saint Francis of Assisi, Townsend, in friendship
With our Heavenly patron and in union with our local bishop, is a
community of the Christian faithful in southeast Blount County, Tenn.
We are determined to be:
t Diligent disciples, eagerly learning all Christ wants to teach us
through His Apostles and bishops,
t Courageous missionaries, inviting all our friends and neighbors
into a joyful encounter with Christ and His Church,
t Humble foot-washers, getting down on our knees to serve those
among us suffering from any need,
t Generous hosts, welcoming all our visitors with the same joyful
care with which we welcome Christ Himself,
t Effective reconcilers, celebrating the Lord's mercy and sharing it
with each other, and
t Reverent worshipers, gathering around the Altar of God to
offer Him His divine Son in gratitude for our many blessings.
Ten Things Catholics Don’t Believe
The Venerable Bishop Fulton J. Sheen once wrote, “There are not a hundred people in America who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions of
people who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church — which is, of course, quite a different thing.”
Mending the mistaken notions of our non-Catholic friends and relatives about what we actually believe is both a spiritual work of mercy and an important step in the reunion of all Christians. Below is a list of ten common misconceptions paired with what the Catholic Church really teaches:
1. Catholics don’t believe that Mary is a goddess, but that she is the holy mother of God and of all Christians. 2. Catholics don’t worship statues, but images help us connect with our friends in Heaven. 3. Catholics don’t believe that the pope is sinless or inerrant about everything, but that he is the successor to St. Peter and can teach infallibly on faith and morals. 4. Catholics don’t believe that people shouldn’t read Sacred Scripture, but that we won’t interpret it well apart from Sacred Tradition. 5. Catholics don’t believe that we are “saved by works,” but that we must cooperate with God’s saving graces. 6. Catholics don’t believe that Jesus is re-sacrificed at every Mass, but that the Mass re-presents (makes present) his one sacrifice and applies its power here and now. 7. Catholics don’t believe in cannibalism, but that the Eucharist, because of Christ’s word, truly is the real, living person of Jesus Christ. 8. Catholics don’t believe that married couples must have as many children as humanly possible, but that it is harmful to separate what God has joined in the marital embrace. 9. Catholics don’t believe that purgatory is a second chance or “temporary hell,” but that God perfects us to be in his holy presence in Heaven. 10. Catholics don’t believe that all non-Catholics will go to hell, but we want everyone to come into full communion with us in Christ’s one Church.

Every parish strives to strengthen its bonds by mutually sharing
hopes and fears, joys and sorrows. Our new parish Vocation Cross
will become a parish tradition as we focus our parish prayer and
family prayer on interceding for vocations to the priesthood and
religious life from our parish families.
This our Vocation Cross will travel from one parishioner’s
home to another parishioner’s home as a sign of our total parish
commitment to praying for vocations.
Many families have precious keepsakes that remind them of
their past and also of their future. Over the past few years it has
become common once again for religious symbols to be part of our
Catholic homes. These precious symbols are reminders of who we are
as Catholics and what we are called to be. The Vocation Cross would
be a wonderful instrument of prayer and devotion for our parish
families. The Cross reminds each host family that it is their
responsibility to pray for and foster vocations to the priesthood and
religious life.
The Cross has been blessed by using it as a symbol at Mass. It
would not be appropriate to use it for any other purpose, it is a
sacred object. However, it would be very appropriate if knowing the
sacredness of the Cross, the children, grandchildren or greater
grandchildren of the family were allowed to unpack it and place it
on the dinner table each night.
The Vocation Cross is to be used in the same fashion as the
Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Fatima. A family is asked to host the Cross
for one week. Each evening as the family gathers for their evening
meal, the Cross should be placed at the center of the table to be used
as a reminder of our commitment to pray for vocations. In this way
at least one family is praying for the intention of an increase in
vocations to the priesthood and religious life. This special intention
should focus on a generous response to the call to the priesthood and
religious life from our parish. At the end of the week and just before
mass, the hosting family returns the vocation cross package to Fr.
Jerry Daniels. After mass, Father announces the next ‘signed up’
family in line to host the vocation cross. The new hosting family
walks up to the altar, receives the vocation cross package and a new
weekly hosting cycle begins.
The hosting package consists of the vocation cross, the daily
prayer and three candles. Please tighten the screw at the base of
each candle to light it up. There is a sign-up book in Shea Hall, please
spend a minute or two to sign-up. For Saturday mass goers sign up to
host from Saturday-to-Saturday and for Sunday mass goers sign up
to host from Sunday-to-Sunday. There are two vocation crosses, one
for Saturday-to-Saturday hosting and one for Sunday-to-Sunday
hosting. At the end of your hosting week, please return the package
to Father just before the appropriate mass.
Remember, the success or failure of this depends on all of us. If
you discover a flaw in the procedure please report to father. If you
wish to have a copy of the VOCATION PRAYER to keep, please leave
a note in the sign-up book. May The LORD Shine the light of his
countenance upon us, our Parish, our Diocese, our Vocations and
give us peace, now and for evermore. Amen.
