Talk of the Town Good afternoon and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Barnoldswick Town. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game.

It’s a quick turnaround for us as we were here at Brocstedes Park on Tuesday evening when we hosted Stockport Sports. It was a strange game as we failed to threaten much in the opening period, indeed the game was without much incident until shortly before the interval when a foray forward by right back Aaron Morris was halted by foul means in the box and James Rushton-Woods converted from the spot., Town’s first effort of any note on target. The second period was equally strange as Town had arguably their best spell of the game in the quarter of an hour after the restart and press forward looking to double their lead but again failed to trouble the score sheet. At the other end Stockport’s top scorer Ben Halfacre levelled matters when a ball from the right evaded Hamish Falconer and he struck a fine volley home from the edge of the box. The game was to turn on a couple of “goal” incidents in quick succession, Town skipper Andy Gillespie carved out a fine chance for himself which curled just over the angle of crossbar and left hand upright from the right of the area. At the other end Marcos Fortuna made no mistake with an easier chance as he took advantage of a free header to steer home a right wing cross and Halfacre added his second and Stockport’s third to give Town a mountain to climb with just over a quarter of an hour to play but a swift response from the hosts saw Chris Cottington send a fine strike home to open his account and give Town a chance of a share of the spoils. St Helens pressed forward in search of a leveller and with normal time running out an attacking switch saw striker Paul Cook-Hannah replace full back Ed Richardson and almost instantly the visitors put the game beyond Town as Adam Gardiner chipped in with his sides fourth to secure the points would go to Sports. We are now in a run of four defeats in a row and five of the last six games have seen us defeated, indeed in the last six matches we have conceded 21 goals and we are giving ourselves a massive problem when we have to score three or four goals to get something out of a match.

We must get out of the rut but in terms of the run of defeats and also the number of goals which we are conceding if we are to stop the slide down the league table which we are currently in. This afternoons visitors Barnoldswick Town had an awful start to the season losing their first five matches and conceding twenty one goals in the process but appear to have turned the corner as results improved last week seeing them beat AFC Blackpool 3-2 at home in midweek prior to a

hard fought 1-1 home draw with AFC Liverpool last Saturday so Ian, the coaching staff and the lads will know they need to be on top form if we are to get a positive result from this afternoons contest. Finally, let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them onto victory you support is vital to the cause! Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today Historically there are been teams representing the Town of Barnoldswick in County competition since the early 1900’s with teams such as Barnoldswick, Barnoldswick United & Barnoldswick Town playing in the Lancashire Combination in the early part of the 20th Century. Indeed St Helens Town & Barnoldswick crossed swords during the latter’s 8 season stint in the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination League between 1947/8 & 1954/55 seasons. The clubs best league finish was achieved in the 1952/3 season when they finished in 6th position above Town who ironically beat them twice 5-3 at home and 6-0 away. The origins of the current club date back to 1972 when a new club was formed and named Barnoldswick United (1972), - so called due to being canny

Yorkshire Men – being as their was a previous club named Barnoldswick United and they had outstanding debts the new club would not now be liable for them. The current ground started out as a grazing meadow for cattle, after a lot of hard work, it is now the pitch we play on. The club had 2 teams playing in the Craven & District Football League in the early 1990's and joined the East Lancashire Football League again with 2 teams. The 2003/2004 season brought the amalgamation of Barnoldswick United(1972), Barnoldswick Park Rovers and Salterforth Juniors and the club changed its name to Barnoldswick Town Football Club. From that point the club ran 3 senior teams. In the late 1990's the 1st and 2nd teams joined The West Lancashire Football League, with the 3rds staying in The East Lancashire Football League. It had always been in the club's constitution to get the ground up to the minimum standards of The North West Counties Football League and the 2009/2010 season saw the club accepted into The North West Counties Football League, with the 1st team playing in Division One, and the 2nd team in the reserve division. The clubs 3rd team remained in The East Lancashire Football League.

The club also entered an under 18's team in The LFA midweek floodlight league for the 2009/2010 season, and also had 7 junior teams playing in the North Valley League for the 2009/2010 season. The club can call upon the 2 pitches on the site, one being floodlit plus a floodlit training pitch. Our club house can hold up to 120 people and is hired out for functions. The club’s main sponsor is Silentnight Beds Ltd and the ground is named The Silentnight Beds

Barnoldswick Town Stadium. Ambitions for last season started low. The club have got three managers and they took a lot of stick especially from Radio Lancashire, stating that 3 managers cannot possibly run a successful football team. Well Messers Ball, Richardson & Airdrie proved them all wrong with Barnoldswick Town finishing runners up in the Vodkat League, Division One and finalists in the prestigious West Riding

County Cup beating Guiseley who won promotion to the Conference North along the way. It was an interesting season as the club only expected to hold our own and try to make sure they avoided the battle at the bottom of the league. Following on from their successes in the 2009/10 season the club went from just looking to avoid relegation in the Premier Division 2010/11 to astounding themselves by finishing a creditable 7th in the league, only suspensions and injuries the club felt robbed them of a top three spot. Initially the clubs main aim for the 2011/12 season was not to get relegated, somewhat low considering the previous terms performances but again Barlick were to perform well at the summit of the table and have made a commitment to get their ground up to

standard as they intend to apply for promotion in the 2012/13 season. The club improved on their previous season and finished in 4th position. The 2012/2013 season saw Barlick finish 9th in the Premier Division and reaching a round further in The FA Vase. The Reserves finishing 4th in their respective league, with players being selected for the first team squad showing strength and depth at the club. The 2013/14 season was a little bit traumatic for the club, players leaving or not being available and unrest in the dressing room which led to poor performances on the field. The club parted with manager Paul Fildes replacing him with the current managerial team of Stewart Airdrie and James Gill. Off the field proved challenging as finances started to run a little low and it was a worry that the club may have to pull out of the NWCFL. However a rescue package was decided upon and Anne Wolfenden has come in and her business expertise is hopefully putting the club back on track. In June 2014 the club achieved it’s Charter Standard status.

From the Chair Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals Barnoldswick Town. Following five successive defeats at the start of the season Barlick have seen an improvement over the past two encounters with a vital 3-2 home

win over AFC Blackpool while last Saturday they held high flying AFC Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at the Silent Night Beds Stadium. Town will be hoping to bring to an end to four successive defeats and a tide of goals which has seen twenty conceded, the latest a 2-4 defeat at home to Stockport Sports on Tuesday evening. The lads seem to be lacking confidence at the moment and gone is the grit and determination of the opening games. Like all clubs at this time of the season we’ve had some personnel changes from game to game with holidays, injury and illness but hopefully things will start to settle and we can regain some composure. Last season’s two league meetings saw Town take four points from six with a 1-2 win at Barnoldswick at the end of August with goals from Judge and Cook-Hannah while in the return fixture here at Brocstedes Park an Andy Gillespie strike earned us a point in a 1-1 draw which saw Town’s unbeaten league run extend to ten games. Following today’s game Town have a planned midweek trip to the Barton Stadium (home of Winsford United) to take on Premier Division newcomers 1874 Northwich on Tuesday evening. The fixture will be subject to positive result in 1874’s FA Cup fixture this afternoon with Prescot Cables - hopefully we have details after the game and they will also be confirmed on our website and Twitter feed. Next Saturday we travel to Irlam in the FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round before a trio of home league games with the visit of Abbey Hey, AFC Liverpool and Runcorn Linnets. Off the field the club continues to work hard to generate sponsorship and we are still looking for match and match ball sponsors as well as player sponsors - all packages start at £50 for the whole season. Please call me on 07713 339 682 for more details. Don’t forget three of our other teams are in action tomorrow with the Veterans and U17s making league starts while the U18s have their second game of the campaign - full fixture details are in today’s programme. This leaves only the U21s to make their league start on Sunday 7th September - however they have a friendly game tomorrow against Claybrow FC, 11am at Blaguegate, Skelmersdale. Please try to support the lads when possible. Enjoy the game and hopefully we will see you against 1874 Northwich on Tuesday evening. John McKiernan Chairman, St Helens Town AFC

New Shirt Sponsor St Helens Town Football Club is delighted to announce and welcome on board our new sponsors Eciguk St Helens. In what is fantastic news for the club, the St Helens town centre based specialist supplier of electronic cigarettes, e-liquids and accessories have become the club’s 2014-15 playing kit sponsors.

The sponsorship deal will see the Eciguk St Helens company logo adorning the front of the new Town playing kit and the new sponsor will have a significant presence on the club’s website and in the award winning match day programme. An Eciguk St Helens spokesman commented on the deal, stating "We’re delighted to sponsor St Helens Town and are looking forward to working with them over the next year. ‘Our store was opened in October 2012 and was the first of its kind in St Helens and we have built a strong customer base. We are focused on providing high quality service and customer satisfaction.’ John McKiernan, Chairman of St Helens Town Football Club couldn't hide his delight when speaking about the deal and said ‘It's fantastic for the club to attract a sponsorship deal from a local company of the calibre of Eciguk St Helens. This is a record-breaking sponsorship deal and the partnership continues to raise the profile of the club. ‘So once again we would like to offer our thanks and gratitude to everyone at Eciguk St Helens for their kind sponsorship of St Helens Town and we look forward to developing our partnership throughout the season on a variety of projects and sponsorship opportunities. ‘Remember to visit them at their retail store in George Street, close to St Helens Central railway station or on-line at www.ecigsthelens.vpweb.co.uk. A Brief History The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again for the 1955/56 season, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is still the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was to win the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire

secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Sadly, all three have passed away in the last few years. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, include John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase

winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and next to bottom in 2011-12, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up and they battled well to avoid relegation, their status being confirmed with a couple of games remaining. 2013-14 was a mirror-image of the previous campaign, with a 14-game unbeaten run between September and December putting the club just behind the front runners for two thirds of the campaign. Granite resigned in November 2013 due to work and family commitments and his assistant Ian Price took over the reins, assisted by Paul Jones and Nick Matthews, but the long breaks caused by the winter weather interrupted their earlier rhythm and Town finished the season once again in the lower reaches, although never in any serious danger of the drop. Following the demolition of the Knowsley Road ground in 2010, Town have led a nomadic existence up the road in Ashton-in-Makerfield, sharing Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street ground for three seasons before moving across town to Brocstedes Park as the guests of Ashton Athletic in 2012. The current season is scheduled to be the club’s last in exile, as plans are in place for re-location back to St. Helens for the 2015-16 season at the Council-owned Ruskin Park site, currently undergoing massive redevelopment and a brand-new facility awaits. In readiness for the move, the club is undergoing a radical re-branding, adopting the town’s coat of arms as their badge once again and reverting next season to their traditional blue and white colours in preparation for a return to the town in 2015.

NWCFL News Nine of our clubs go in search of cup glory and prize money in the FA Cup Preliminary Round on Saturday. Unlike the last round, none of our sides have been drawn against each other, but five have home advantage, and with many of the teams going into the weekend in good form, there are grounds for optimism that the League will have a presence in the next round. One of the eye catching ties of the round sees Congleton Town host Salford City, who

travel to Booth Street sitting at the top of the Evo-Stik League Division One North having won all four league games so far. The Ammies, who left our league in 2007, have of course been in the headlines in recent months with members of the Manchester United "Class of 92" getting involved in the club. It promises to be a tough test for the Bears who reached the First Round Proper of the competition in 1989-90 when they lost to Crewe Alexandra, but they go into the game in good form with just one defeat so far this season. Stockport Sports recorded a fine away win at Nostell MW in the last round, and they will fancy their chances at the Stockport Sports Village against Ossett Town, who have lost their last three games in the Evo-Stik Division One North. A tie away at FC United of Manchester is the prize that awaits the winners of the tie between 1874 Northwich and Prescot Cables. It's 1874's first ever FA Cup campaign, and they face a Cables side managed by former Bootle boss Neil Prince who, somewhat unusually, have recorded three goalless draws in their opening four league games. Runcorn Linnets have a 100% winning record so far this season, although it will be severely tested away to a Droylsden side who beat Harrogate Railway Athletic 6-1 in a league clash at the Butchers Arms last weekend. Linnets' town rivals Runcorn Town are also in cup action, and they are the only of our teams facing a team from the Evo-Stik League South, with Goole making the trip to the Pavilions from the East Riding of Yorkshire. West Didsbury & Chorlton also host a Yorkshire team in Brighouse Town, who have made a good start

to their first season in the Evo-Stik Division One North after being promoted last season. Squires Gate make the trip to New Mills for the first time since the Millers were promoted from our League in 2011, and with Gate unbeaten in four away games so far they will take heart from the fact that their opponents have lost their opening two home league games. The form team in Division One, Atherton Collieries will be making the short trip to Radcliffe Borough, and with both teams having been in fine goalscoring form of late, a goalless draw looks like the least likely outcome at Stainton Park. Glossop North End are the only club facing a team from the same level of the non-league pyramid, and they travel to South Yorkshire to take on Maltby Main from the Northern Counties East League. The Yorkshire side have hosted NWCFL opponents in the FA Cup for the last three seasons, and knocked out Wigan Robin Park in the last round of the competition, but the Hillmen will be looking to extend their unbeaten record at the expense of their opponents, who have had a mixed start to the season with two wins and two draws in their opening four league games.

Town Managers

Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured opposite) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge.

Past & Present 1992-93 Mick Holgate presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving

on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town

manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club ’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club ’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a diff icult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation.

2012 - 2013 Ian Granite became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 2012-13 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price (left) took over the managerial reigns with Paul Jones as his assistant. Many thanks to Jim Barrett and Eric Bond for their input in compiling the information.

Match Report Town let in another four goals in fourth successive heavy defeat Tuesday 26th August 2014 ST. HELENS TOWN 2, STOCKPORT SPORTS 4 St. Helens Town surrendered a first half lead and let in another four goals as they went down to a useful-looking Stockport side on Tuesday evening

at Brocstedes Park. An early half-chance fell to Town as two visiting defenders dwelt on the ball but Chad Whyte could not get in a clear shot and in a dull but even first half, it took Stockport 20 minutes to threaten the home goal, Chris Brinksman saving well from big forward Ben Halfacre. The home side failed to trouble Jack Cookson in the Sports’ goal for virtually the entire first period but Town took the lead in the 40th minute when James Rushton-Woods scored emphatically from the penalty spot after Aaron Morris had turned Justin Pickering inside out before he was hacked down turning into the visitors’ box. A few minutes later, a moment of madness between keeper Cookson and centre-back Paulie Wadsworth almost teed up Whyte for a second Town goal, but from that point onwards, Stockport’s midfield overran their Town adversaries, who had no answer to the onslaught. That they survived until half-time without conceding was more by good luck than judgement as first Alex Crowe and then Tyrone Turner missed the target when it seemed easier to score. Stockport Sports controlled the whole of the second period and from a corner kick in the 62nd minute, Adam Gardiner found Halfacre who buried his ferocious shot in the back of Town’s net from 20 yards for the overdue equaliser. Sports then stepped up their attacks and Marcos Fortana scored a second with his head five minutes later and the points were secured after a long ball from the right wing was met by Halfacre for his second goal in the 73rd minute. With the game all but lost, Karl Bergqvist, Marcus Perry and Paul Cook-Hannah came off the bench to inject a little more energy up front and Town pulled a goal back when Andy Gillespie rounded two defenders out near the corner flag then placed a pin-point cross to the feet of Chris Cottington, playing in midfield, who scored neatly from the edge of the penalty area, making it 2-3 with 14 minutes left. Once again, Town were in with a shout, but they had left themselves a mountain to climb and it came as no surprise when Stockport broke through Sam Marshall, whose crossfield ball was met by Gardiner, who netted easily in the closing minutes. A return to winning ways is hopefully not too far off, with the visit of fellow strugglers Barnoldswick an opportunity to re-gather lost momentum ahead of difficult trips to 1874 Northwich on Tuesday (at Winsford) and the FA Vase First Round Qualifying tie at Irlam on Saturday next.

Town are delighted to welcome on board Jewson who will become leisure wear and training kit sponsors for the club’s U21s team who will be operating in the Cheshire FA U21s League during 2014-15.

Barnoldswick Town have signed an extended deal with local bed manufacturer Silentnight, which sees the firm’s long running support of the club continue. The Barnoldswick-based bed manufacturer has extended their sponsorship of the club in a deal which sees them retain naming rights of the club’s Silentnight Beds Stadium.

The deal comes after a restructure of sponsorship arrangements at the club to ensure its ongoing financial stability. Lyle Davy, part of the club’s Commercial Team said: “Silentnight have been so supportive of the Club, and we have so much to thank them for over such a long period of time. “As the Club enters a new phase, to ensure its financial standing for many more years to come, they have been integral in helping us to plan for the future”. Nick Booth, Marketing Director of Silentnight said: “We’ve supported Barnoldswick Town FC for many years now, and it’s been great to be part of this next chapter for the club as it moves forward. “We’re delighted to be able to commit to taking a leading role in supporting them”.

Winsford United have announced that Winsford Town Council has renewed its sponsorship of the club for a third season. Chairman Mark Loveless said: “Their support of the club and what we are trying to achieve has given everyone involved with Winsford United a tremendous boost. "The funding they have provided has enabled us to greatly improve the facilities, including a changing room for lady officials and new drainage for problem areas of the pitch” Secretary Bob Astles added: “For many years now we have been a one

-team club, but the help the Council has given us means we now have four junior teams and a ladies team under our umbrella. "We have also recently been awarded Charter Standard status, and we intend to do more to make Winsford United a genuine Community Club serving the needs of the people of Winsford”. The photo shows Mayor Gina Lewis presenting the sponsorship cheque to Blues team captain Gavin Ellison, with Commercial Manager Martin O’Neill and Vice-Chairman Dave Taylor looking on.

Match Report Poor second-half display leads to another heavy defeat

Colne 4-0 St Helens Town Saturday 23rd August 2014 St. Helens Town slid to another heavy defeat on Saturday at Colne, mainly due to a poor second-half performance in which they conceded two

spectacular goals and a soft penalty. The first half started brightly enough and, as early as the fourth minute, pressure in the home penalty area led to a Colne defender heading on to the top of his own bar when the ball might just as easily have fallen into the net. Soon afterwards, Andy Gillespie launched a drive which narrowly missed the target. Aaron Morris got the final touch after a sustained Town attack, only to see his shot blocked midway through the half. Town looked the better side throughout nearly all the first period, but had great difficulty playing down the slope and Marcus Perry in particular found a number of balls running away from him and out of play, which limited his usual effectiveness. Chad Whyte had another goal-bound attempt tipped over the bar by keeper Chris Thompson and it seemed only a matter of time before Town took the lead. However, with less than a minute to the interval, Colne launched an attack in which centre-backs Jonathan Hodgkinson and Hamish Falconer rose together and the Colne player just got the decisive touch as the ball crossed the visitors’ line, the referee having to seek confirmation from his assistant before awarding the goal. There was not enough time for Town to launch an attempt to level the scores before the whistle blew for half-time with Colne 1-0 up. The visitors’ hopes of pulling back the deficit were dashed by a curiously insipid display after the resumption. Colne’s players obviously had much greater experience of controlling the ball down the steep gradient and overran Town’s midfield time and time again, whilst St. Helens rarely ventured up the slope to any effect. To the onlooker, it appeared they had accepted defeat, as they rarely threatened. In truth, Colne were not a great deal better and it took two wonderful drives to raise the game from the mediocre. A badly timed tackle from captain Neil Hulme 40 yards out led to a booking for the Town skipper and worse was to follow, as Tom Berwick launched the free-kick just inside Chris Brinksman’s left post, giving the keeper no chance. Town looked a beaten side and on 75 minutes, Joe Garvin scored in similar fashion as he approached the corner of the penalty area. Brinksman made three excellent one-on-one saves from further attacks, which kept the scoreline down to respectable proportions, but he had no chance with Danny Boyle’s spot kick seven minutes from time, the ball going in off the keeper’s right hand upright. Town’s only response was a header from substitute Karl Bergqvist, which seemed certain to score, but for Thompson to tip over his bar at full stretch. Three wins from the first six league matches place Town twelfth in the table, but they will be looking to return to better form with home games to come against Stockport Sports and Barnoldswick before the end of August.
