St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
Good evening . . . . . . and a very warm welcome to St. Teresa's Parish
Centre for the St. Helens Town AFC 2009-10 Annual
Presentation Evening. A special welcome goes to the
club’s players and staff along with our invited guests,
including some of this season’s sponsors.
Tonight gives us all an opportunity to celebrate a long but
pleasurable season which has seen the club compete in the
Vodkat Premier League and the Liverpool County Premier
League as well as across a variety of cup competitions including the FA Cup, FA
Vase, Liverpool Senior Cup, Vodkat League Challenge Cup, George Mahon Trophy
and John Gregson Memorial Trophy.
The 2009-10 Vodkat Premier League campaign has all been about competing for a
top half finish with any concerns of a ‘relegation battle’ put aside early in the
season. For this alone Gary Bickerstaffe, Lee Riley, their backroom staff and most
importantly the players should be congratulated. While there has been some
disappointment as a consequence of the dip in form we suffered towards the end of
the campaign we would all have settled for 9th place had we been offered it back in
August!!
On the cup front our FA Vase exploits continue to be a frustration to the club - this
season we bowed out at the first time of asking at Padiham FC. However, our FA
Cup ‘mini-run’ did raise the club’s profile as well as a few quid. There are plenty of
great memories for those who made the trips to Parkgate and Colwyn Bay
(especially the latter). We did eventually lose out to more higher league opposition
as Cammell Lairds progressed at our expense. Our end of season blip came off the
back of our exit from the Vodkat League Challenge Cup when Winsford United edged
a one-legged semi-final 1-0 at the Barton Stadium; this after Town had defeated
Colne, Norton United and Wigan Robin Park. Our Reserves also encountered semi-
final heart-break as they exited the John Gregson Memorial Trophy against Croxteth
FC. Having recovered from 3-0 down the lads succumbed to a last minute penalty
and went out 4-3. At the time of writing the Reserves still have two league fixtures
remaining and will be hoping to pick up maximum points (tomorrow at Walton
Players, 3pm kick off and Tuesday 18 May at Pinewoods FC, 6.45pm kick off).
Another highlight of the season was Bert Trautmann’s acceptance of our offer to
become the club’s Honorary President alongside Manchester United legend Bill
Foulkes and of course the fantastic celebrations for the 60th anniversary of Bert’s
transfer from Town to Manchester City. I spoke with Bert earlier this week and he
again showed his enthusiasm for the club and asked me to pass on his best wishes
to everyone.
The funding of non-league football is vital and no more so than during financially
tough times so I must say a huge thank you to all this season’s supporters with a
special mention to Denise Cunliffe and the staff at Care Assured Limited our Main
Sponsors during 2009-10 along with Rob Haygarth and his colleagues at Haygarth
Jones Solicitors who were our away kit sponsors. We must also say thank you to

Glynn Benson from Muni-Serv Specialist Vehicle Solutions who became our
Reserve Team shirt sponsors following a very successful fundraising draw. Another
real boost for the club during 2009-10 has also been the support offered by Gareth
Shone and Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have been our Executive Programme
Sponsors, Player of the Month Sponsors and who have taken numerous other
sponsorships across the campaign. A complete list of this season’s sponsors is
included at the end of this programme. Needless-to-say we are back on the look
out for new sponsors (and hopefully we can renew some of last season’s deals!).
The next few months will prove crucial as the club plans for a significant spell ‘on
the road’ as we make Ashton Town FC our home from the end of September. Of
course the bonus is that this time next year all the hype will be about our first
season in the ‘new stadium’.
My personal thanks must also go to the remainder of the Town committee for their
unstinting voluntary work in support of the club, especially Jeff Voller whose efforts
take up a considerable amount of his time outside of his match day duties. My
thanks must also go to Ste and Lisa Ball, who despite a young family, contribute a
huge amount to the club; John Cole who as well as selling match programmes and
raffle tickets at every home game, keeps himself in shape by cycling to many of
the club’s away fixtures; Glyn Jones, Jim Barrett and Eric Bond for their work in
allowing us to re-engage with the club’s history along with their respective
programme contributions and Dot Ingham who does a sterling job in providing our
half time and post-match refreshments. It takes a great deal of dedication to run
any club at this level and we are fortunate to have a great bunch of volunteers to
help! For those of you who have been badgered by me this season for 100 Club
contributions, please take a well earned rest and the battle will recommence in
August when Andy Langley will have responsibility for fundraising. Chris Ford has
also recently joined the committee and he will be taking on a website development
role. Don’t forget we are always on the look out for additions to our committee -
maybe you can help out match days, distribute some match posters, contribute to
the match programme, sell a few 100 Club tickets to friends and family . . . ?
Many of you will know that we’ve been without the support and services of club
Director Gordon McDonald throughout this season as he continues to battle ill-
health. I am sure everyone will join me in wishing him well! I spoke with Gordon
earlier in the week and hopefully we will see him this evening!
The remainder of tonight’s programme is dedicated to a pictorial review of the
season, and although he’s chosen to ply his trade with Bootle FC, our thanks must
go to Matt Martin for his efforts during his time with the club. Other photographs
are courtesy of Darren Foster and David S. Brett.
It just remains for me to say have a great summer and don’t forget to keep an eye
on the club’s website www.sthelenstownafc.com and the local press for updates
on pre-season friendly fixtures as well as the latest club news, of which I am sure
there will be plenty over the next few weeks!

St. Helens Town Matchday Programme 2009-10 Season
Review of the season . . . 2009/10 – the season in retrospect
The season just finished has been one of great progress and the management team, led by Gary Bickerstaffe, can feel justly proud of the club’s final position. Gary took over the reins at the end of March 2009 and the team finished with a flourish, winning six of the last eight games to end the season in 16th place with 46 points from 42 matches. This time around, following a strong start, 9th place was the final reward, with 66 points from the same number of games, an improvement of nearly 50%. The club, as a whole, has moved forward, on and off the field. The re-formed reserve team had some notable successes in the Liverpool County Combination competitions, as well as providing the first team with talented players. The financial position has also improved, with marvellous support from our generous sponsors in particular. The first team began the season with a target of 20 points from the first ten games. That target was beaten by 3 points, with seven wins and only one defeat and that to the 100% league leaders, Newcastle Town. Bickerstaffe’s men got off to a flyer, with a 5-1 win at Abbey Hey and were unbeaten away from home until a disappointing defeat away to Congleton in mid-October. That form was extended to the FA Cup qualifiers, with wins at Parkgate and - most spectacularly - at high-flying Colwyn Bay before defeat was met with at Cammell Laird, a game
which proved to be Karl Ledsham’s last game before his move to Skelmersdale United. In contrast, there were early exits from the FA Vase at Padiham and the Liverpool Senior Cup, after extra time, at home to Warrington Town. The loss of Ledsham, coupled with the long-term unavailability of established players such as Brian Hatton due to injury and Andy Webster, away in the USA, would have seriously affected any team, but the emergence of youngsters such as Mike Fargher, Peter Birch and Luke Faulkner, together with the much-improved Marc Stephens and solid defensive contributions from John Elias, Ian Frazer and goalkeeper Graeme McCall, along with new signings Ben Kay and Dougie Pitts, rejuvenated the team. The home wins over Runcorn Linnets and Nelson were a joy to behold and when they’re in full flow, the forward line of new signing Rob Hanley and the Mitchell brothers are among the best in the Vodkat League. Three away victories in a week in March lifted the team and a high finishing position looked likely, but the demands on the squad, playing three and four games a week towards the season’s end took their toll and some narrow defeats saw the team’s league position eroded. Town had a good run in the Vodkat League Cup, with victories over Colne, Norton United and Wigan Robin Park, all away from home. With a place in the Final in their sights, the team surrendered an early goal at lowly Winsford United and, try

Review of the season . . . though they might for the remaining 86 minutes, they could not score and a disappointing exit put something of a dampener on the remaining league matches. However, there was a spectacular finish to the season as Padiham were taken apart 4-2 on their own ground, Rob Hanley’s clinching spectacular goal being reminiscent of his scores that marvellous day at Colwyn Bay back in August. Without doubt, the FA Cup win at Colwyn Bay was the season’s highlight and the achievement was put into context earlier this month when the Welsh team gained promotion to the Evo-stik (formerly Unibond) Premier League. Another memorable day was the Trautmann Trophy game at Manchester City in November, staged to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Bert’s transfer from Town to City. It was a pity that Bert was unable to attend on the day. Rob Hanley (top left) finished with 21 goals in his first season, but long-serving midfielder Iain Dyson (middle left) pipped him to the leading scorer’s title with 22. Mike Scully (bottom left) also weighed in with 14
valuable goals. In all, 12 wins away from home in the league was an excellent return, tempered slightly by a disappointing home record of 8 wins, 6 draws and 7 defeats. Town will no doubt be looking forward already to the new season, which will bring more challenges to the club as it tries to capitalise on progress already made, but it will not be easy as the team bring down the curtain at Knowsley Road at the end of September before moving on to Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street ground where they will complete the season before the move to the new stadium in August 2011.
