Good evening and welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Maine Road FC. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us at our new home, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. Well it has been an excellent week for Town as we have secured a maximum return of six points from our two league matches and have risen seven places from 18th to 11th position. We started off with our first league match here at Edge Green Street and secured our first home league win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Atherton LR. A first half goal from skipper Ben Kay was added to by Peter Birch and an injury time goal from Liam Ryder rounded off a good performance with a scoreline which was slightly flattering to Town. On Saturday we took the trip to Padiham and in difficult weather conditions came away with a 3-1 victory in a game which could have gone either way. In the first half we had he wind at our back and plenty of possession but it took until the latter stage of the half for us to take the lead through Liam Pearson. After the interval we struggled to get to grips with wind and the hosts equalised as they dominated the early stages of the second half. With the game looking set for a draw Pearson linked with Daley Woods who found the bottom corner of the net and Pearson netted a late penalty after he had been fouled to take his tally for the season to twelve goals and the late goal saw Town leapfrog over Padiham. This evening’s visitors had an excellent result on Saturday becoming the first side to beat league leaders New Mills securing a 3-0 victory with all the goals coming in the first 19 minutes of the match on what was described on their website as a blustery afternoon at Brantingham Road. Prior to this Road had had a disappointing week having exited the FA Vase in a midweek replay at the hands of Vodkat League, First Division AFC Blackpool, after a draw the previous Saturday. Maine Road will come into this match full of confidence after their victory over New Mills and with Town having won their last three matches they will also be confident, which should ensure that this evenings match should be an entertaining encounter. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street, Ashton Town for tonight’s Vodkat League Premier Division encounter with our good friends from South Manchester, Maine Road FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters; along with tonight’s match officials and our own home following are treated to an entertaining encounter. Both teams enjoyed excellent wins at the weekend as Maine Road recovered from their surprise FA Vase replay exit at AFC Blackpool to put an end to New Mills’ unbeaten start to the league campaign with a 3-0 win at Brantingham Road. All the ‘Road’ goals coming in the opening twenty minutes of the game. Tonight’s visitors have proven to be a bit of a bogey side for the Millers, last season taking four points from them! Town completed a fine week of football with a 1-3 win at Padiham. Last Tuesday had seen Town take maximum points at home to Atherton LR with a 3-0 victory courtesy of three ‘unlikely’ goal scorers – Ben Kay, Peter Birch and Liam Ryder. While the score-line may have flattered Lee Riley’s men we fully deserved the spoils with some excellent football. The windy conditions at Padiham last Saturday proved a major factor in proceedings with Town applying themselves much the better of the two teams. Liam Pearson’s superb strike just before half time was just reward for Town’s domination but the ‘Storks’ hit back after taking the battle to Town in the opening fifteen minutes of the second half, Paul Fildes deservedly equalising on 64 minutes. However, Town got themselves back into the game and goals from Daley Woods (a thunderous low strike) and a ‘cheeky’ penalty from Liam Pearson inside the final five minutes secure the win. Tonight is the first of three home games over the next week – Saturday sees Flixton make the trip to Edge Green Street while next Tuesday evening Town will be looking for some revenge when Formby are our visitors having last month beat Town 2-1 at Altcar Road. Don’t forget the club shop is fully open in the club house with a range of Town merchandise on sale including replica shirts, mugs, pennants, mouse mats, key rings, etc with all proceeds going directly to the club. In Town Today . . . Maine Road were formed in 1955 as City Supporters Rusholme, when present club president Frank Thompson and a few friends formed a team and after playing a few friendlies joined the local Rusholme Sunday League. In the late sixties the club changed to the Manchester Amateur Sunday League and also moved it’s headquarters to the newly built Maine Road Social Club and hence the new name Maine Road Football Club was taken. Ronnie Meredith was now running the club and in 1971/72 the club won the Manchester County Sunday Cup and both the club’s sides

won their respective leagues. This prompted Ron to look for a new challenge and he changed the whole future of the club by switching to Saturday football in the shape of the Manchester League. Success followed success on the field and after several years of moving grounds the club settled at their present home Brantingham Road in 1980. After a lean spell one of Ron’s other ambitions was realised in season 1983/84 when the club won the Manchester League Premier Division. This was to be the first or four consecutive Manchester Premier Division Titles for the club. Derek Barber took over the reigns of management in 1986 and the clubs progress continued, so much so that when the Manchester County F.A.’s new complex at Brantingham Road was built, Ron’s other ambition was achieved, entry to the North West Counties Football League. In season 1987/88 Maine Road were successful at Maine Road the then home of Manchester City FC as they beat Irlam Town 1-0 in the final of the Manchester County FA Premier Cup to complete a unique record of winning all five Manchester County FA County cups. The five cups were; Premier Cup (1987/88), Amateur Cup(1972/73, 1997/98 & 2004/05), Sunday Amateur Cup (1971/72), Intermediate Cup (1975/76 & 1976/77) & Challenge Cup (1982/83, 1984/85, 1985/86 & 1986/87). In only their second season in the North West Counties League 1988/89, the club finished 2nd Division runners-up behind champions Vauxhall but were denied promotion on ground grading. The club went one better the next season when they won the Second Division Championship and took what they felt was their rightful place in the League’s top flight. At the end of 2001/02 season after 12 years in the North West Counties League Division One Maine Road were relegated to the Second Division. This was the first time that a Maine Road side had been relegated. Two seasons in Division Two saw a very young and inexperienced side finish in 3rd place and then Runners-up, which lead to the club regaining their place in the top flight. The 2004/5 season saw the club finish in a creditable 8th place in their first season back in Division One. Town had mixed fortunes against Maine Road recording a 2-0 victory at Knowsley Road in February and in the March return Maine Road gained revenge with a 2-1 victory in Joe Gibiliru’s first game in charge.

. . . Maine Road FC Maine Road have a long and proud reputation for introducing young players. This began with the introduction of a youth team in the late 80’s. The success in spotting and nurturing young talent has continued over the past decade with the clubs domination of the Umbro International Football Tournament at the Under 19’s level. Over 8 seasons the club have won the competition on five occasions and been runners-up twice. 2005/6 season saw a 10th position finish followed by Ian Walker leading the outfit to a club record sixth position finish in his first season in charge (2006/7). 2007/8 saw Walker lead Road to a cup success beating Second Division Bootle on penalties in the Challenge Cup Final. On top of this Maine Road ended the season in fourth position, their highest ever league finish. The following term saw the Manchester outfit unable to build on the previous seasons achievements and they struggled at the wrong end of the table for most of the season before recovering to finish in a respectable 13th position. Last season saw Road have another good term as the clubs youth policy continues to pay dividends. They won twenty one of their forty two league matches in finishing in 6th position and seem to have cemented their place as a top half of the table side having finished in a top 10 position in five of the six season since their return to the top flight of the Vodkat League in 2004/5. This term has seen the club have a mixed start to the season with the club currently sitting in 9th position in the Premier Division table. After a disappointing FA Vase exit last midweek at the hands of AFC Blackpool Maine Road defeated previously unbeaten New Mills on Saturday and Road fans will be wondering what kind of performance their boys will turn in this evening.

Match Report Saturday 9th October 2010 Vodkat League, Premier Division Padiham 1-3 St Helens Town 0-1; Liam Pearson 44 Minutes, 1-1; Paul Fildes 64 Minutes, 1-2; Daley Woods 85 Minutes, 1-3; Liam Pearson (Penalty) 90+1 Minutes. Town’s good week continued as they recorded their third victory in succession adapting better to the windy conditions than their hosts over the 90 minutes. The visitors dominated the first half with the aid of the wind at their backs and the early stages saw Iain Dyson and Liam Pearson link with Dyson’s shot being held by Sean Davis in the home goal. A Town corner was met by Pearson on 12 minutes and with Davis beaten Brain Walsh had to be alert to clear the ball off the line. Pearson was in the action again soon afterwards when he collected the ball on the right of the penalty area and curled an effort just wide of the left hand post. Further Town pressure saw Pearson take the ball down well before turning his marker and sending a dangerous cross into the box which evaded everyone in the 18 yard box and was cleared. Pearson was causing constant problems for Padiham and he chased down a through ball, goalkeeper Davis got a touch at the edge of the box and the ball broke to Dyson who played a one, two with Marc Stephens and his shot from the edge of the box and the stopper claimed the shot at the second attempt. Just before the interval Town did break the deadlock when Ben Kay found Pearson on the edge of the area with a through ball and he beat his defender before curling home. The lead was almost doubled when Dyson took the ball down just outside the area and quickly got a shot off that Davis held on the second attempt. With the change of ends the wind was now behind the hosts and Padiham dominated the opening twenty of minutes of the second period culminating in them levelling on 64 minutes when a long diagonal ball from Paul Walker in the right back position released Paul Fildes and he found himself one on one with Dale Newbrook in the Town goal and he made no mistake slotting home. In the closing stages with the game looking to be petering out into a draw Town took the game to their hosts and this saw them net twice in the final five minutes of the contest. Pearson found Daley Woods in the right of the area with a fine ball and his sublime first time effort found the bottom left hand corner of the net. In added on time Woods blocked an attempted clearance and the ball broke to Kay who fed Pearson and he got into the box before being pulled back by Mark Derbyshire and the referee pointed to the spot with the fouled striker stepping up and chipping a cheeky spot kick over the goalkeeper as he dived and into the back of the net to secure a victory by two goals which saw Town leap above the vanquished hosts into 11th position in the table. St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town Football Club 1946 - present

The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside

area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at

. . . A Brief History Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann (pictured right), who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago last season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes (pictured right below) was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil (pictured opposite), who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone.

The close season saw Bickerstaffe step down and Lee Riley promoted to manager. A number of new faces have joined the club and this combination of youth and experience will be looking to improve on last season’s impressive ninth position and success in the cup competitions. The Knowsley Road ground is being demolished this autumn, necessitating a temporary move to Ashton Town, but August 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club.

St Helens Town have launched a brand new sponsorship package for the 2010-11 season which will see one lucky participant drive away a brand new Toyota Aygo worth almost £9000. The package forms part of the club’s main sponsorship deal with Bootle based car dealership Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have donated the car and who will be assisting the club in promoting the event across the region. In addition to raising funds for the senior and junior St Helens Town teams the

sponsorship project will be supporting local charity The Steve Prescott Foundation who will receive 50% of all profits. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the club’s profile as well as some much need funds for the whole club and The Steve Prescott Foundation. We are extremely grateful to Johnsons Toyota Liverpool for their generous support and hopefully the public and business community will get behind the project.’ He added, ‘The Foundation is very well know across the region and has been successful in raising a huge amount of money across a number of activities, many of the sport related, and we thought the Town’s football club should do its bit!’ ‘Steve Prescott is best known for his Rugby League exploits with St Helens, Hull, Wakefield, Ireland and as a GB Lions tourist; but there is a football connection as his son played for the St Helens Town Juniors U8s last season and has recently been signed by Liverpool FC.’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons said, ‘Our partnership with St Helens Town continues to develop and this season we have become the club’s main sponsor. We will be looking at a range of activities to ensure we both benefit from the partnership – with the ‘win-a-Toyota-Car’ project hopefully proving to be a successful start.’ The club have 200 sponsorship packages available at £100 each which will give individuals and businesses the opportunity to win the car. Dale Newbrook: Signed at the start of the 2010-11 season as cover from Kevin Woods but has already made the number one jersey his own. Played against Town for West Didsbury and Chorlton FC in a pre-season friendly fixture. A great shot stopper who commands his area extremely well. Vodkat League Premier Division 'Goalkeeper of the Month' for August 2010 Kevin Woods: Very good young goalkeeper who is now in his third season with the club. Last season he battled for the keeper's jersey with Graeme McCall and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Stephen Ben Kay: Another player starting his second season with the club after signing from Wigan Robin Park. Can play centre back or midfield and has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. The 2009-10 Players Player of the Year and rewarded with the captaincy for season 2010-11. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club in 2008-09 season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. John will be looking to improve his disciplinary record. Iain Dyson: Former Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club's top goalscorer last term for the third time in four seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Luke Faulkner: Twenty two year old central defender who joined the club last season from Mid-Cheshire outfit Garswood United. Has composure beyond his years which has been evident across a number of excellent performances for club. Definitely one to watch!

Town Pen Pictures . . . Liam Pearson: Joined in the summer from Ford Motors, a prolific goal scorer in the Liverpool County Premier League. A big strong centre forward who is good in the air and with the ball at his feet and he will prove to be a handful for opposition defenders. Paul Cliff: Another young player who joined during the close season from neighbours Prescot Cables where he was a regular in their Unibond side. Paul plays on the left wing and has an eye for goal as his pre-season games showed. Marc Stephens: Young midfield player who has had a fine couple of seasons at Town. Signed in the summer of 2008 he came into his own when moved into central midfield where his movement and passing ability are a real quality. He has had a excellent start to the 2010-11 season with goals being added to his repertoire! Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club last season. After some early substitute appearances he's now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who's good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Mark Evans: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club last season after spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR and Wigan Robin Park. Liam Arnold: A new signing from local outfit Windle Labour FC where he was top scorer in the Warrington Premier Division in season 2009-10. Good pace and creativity have been a highlight of his early season form for Town Lee Owens: A strong and deceptively agile central defender who joined from Prescot Cables during the summer 2010. Mike Fargher: Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defenders and beat them before

sending quality crosses into the box. The 2009-10 Young Player of the Year. Karl Aldridge: Right sided defender or midfield player who is another of the crop of summer signings. Now a regular following a pre-season shoulder injury which kept him out of the team’s opening games of the season. Brian Hatton: The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. He has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian spent much of last season recovering from injury. Former Stockport and Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Dave Garnell: Tall and strong central defender who also has an eye for goal. A great presence in both penalty boxes, signed this summer from Prescot Cables. Daniel Mahoney: A goal-scoring midfielder who joined from Chester FC in September 2010. Good pace and excellent on the ball. His dad Mac also played for Town in the 1990s.

Daley Woods: A speedy front man who has a great first touch and an eye for the spectacular goal. Joined the club during the close season 2010 from Prescot Cables. Phil Mitchell: Joined Town from Warrington two seasons ago for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Lee Riley: Joined the club two seasons ago as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition to the club, stepping up to become manager this season. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables and also had a playing spell with Town. Phil Burton: Joined the club during the close season as Assistant Manager to Lee Riley having been manager of the Prescot Cables Reserves. A well qualified coach who has had previous playing spells with Whiston Cross, Prescot Cables and Altrincham

Maine Road FC in action . . . Maine Rd 3 Millers 0 Saturday 9th Oct 2010 (by kind permission of the New Mills website) Maine Road inflicted New Mills's first Vodkat League Premier Division defeat of the season at a cold and blustery Brantingham Road on Saturday afternoon. The Millers were the architects of their own downfall with a below par first half defensive performance which gave the home side a healthy lead which they never looked like losing. The young home side, who have seen a number of their senior players join other Vodkat Premier Division clubs in the last few weeks, took less than two minutes to take the lead when The Millers were caught flat footed by a short corner. The set piece was played into the feet of Rob Ford whose angled first time shot found the corner of the net through a melee of players. Even though Maine Road lead at such an early stage of the game, the possible pivotal point of the game happened moments later when home keeper Andrew Jones ensured that the visitors didn't strike back almost immediately as he somehow made an outstanding reflex save to prevent an own goal from captain Alex Jay’s sliced clearance. From there on, Maine Road's lively forwards capitalised on any mistakes made by New Mills's defensive line and firstly ex Miller Liam Beckford and then Ini Ibehe-Inyang scored goals that were created by uncharacteristic individual errors. Centre halves Nick Swirad and Tony Barras failed to deal with a long ball which allowed Beckford a free run on goal before he comfortably side-footed the ball past Dominic Ingram-Hughes. The Millers keeper was again left horribly exposed again in the nineteenth minute when Carl Carey gave the ball away in the midfield area and youngster Inyang’s pace saw him race clear of the defence before slotting the ball home. The visitors, who handed ex Altrincham striker Colin Little his debut, were struggling to gain any momentum in the attacking third of the field but Luke Horrocks should have done a lot better with possibly New Mills’s best chance of the entire game just before the half hour. A defensive clearance only found its way to the edge of the Maine Road penalty area where Horrocks was unmarked. Despite time and space and the ball on his favoured left foot, he blazed the ball high and wide which just about summed up The Millers first half performance. If New Mills were to get anything from the match, it was crucial that they struck early in the second half but again they struggled to make any significant inroads into the Maine Road defence who dealt with most things thrown at them. The introduction of Adam Morning, Dave Swarbrick and Leon Grandision from the substitute bench livened The Millers up, in particular the former who had some joy down the left wing. But no matter how hard they tried, the attacking players just didn’t have their shooting boots on as they failed to seriously test home goalkeeper Andrew Jones all afternoon. After taking four points from a possible six last season, Maine Road are fast becoming The Millers bogey team but all credit must go to them as they thoroughly deserved their victory on the day. With all the other top teams winning on Saturday, it is vital that New Mills bounce back quickly and they have the perfect opportunity to do just that on Tuesday evening when they travel to Winsford United. Vodkat League News Reds Tribute To Young Fan

Last Saturday, a delegation of Rangers supporters attended the AFC Liverpool v Runcorn Town game, and accepted a specially commissioned silver salver from the Reds in memory of fans who died in the Ibrox Disaster nearly 40 years ago. The supporters travelled down to Liverpool to offer their respects to the youngest victim of the Ibrox Park Tragedy. The incident occurred on 2 January 1971 at the end of an Old Firm game. After 89 minutes of scoreless football Celtic took a 0-1 lead and many Rangers supporters left the stadium. However, in the last seconds of stoppage time, Colin Stein scored an equaliser for Rangers. gave way, resulting the deaths of 66 souls, the youngest being Nigel Pickup from Liverpool, who had travelled up to Scotland to see his first football game with his Granddad. Nigel was 8 years old. As a mark of respect, and to remember Nigel, Rangers supporters along with AFC Liverpool supporters visited his grave the following day and will laid a small memorial stone to show that nearly 40 years on, he is still in their thoughts and will never be forgotten. AFC Liverpool fan Tommy Hurst recently struck up a friendship with Rangers supporter Colin Shearer, after a posting on Facebook which highlighted the Reds' support of the Hillsborough victims last year, and saw the introduction of the 96 logo on the first team players shirts in place of the clubs sponsor. Tommy explained: "I was approached by Colin, who asked if we would like to attend the ceremony on Sunday. We will be represented by fans, board members and AFC Liverpool Chairman Chris Stirrup on the day as they unveil the memorial stone. The guys have been invited as guests of the club for the game against Runcorn Town on Saturday, and through the Rangers website "Follow Follow" some Merseyside based Rangers fans are also attending the game. "We have ordered a silver salver from AFC Liverpool fans that will be presented to the Rangers supporters' assembly before Saturday's game to remember the victims of the Ibrox disaster. It's engraved with the following: "Glasgow Rangers fans worldwide - On the 40th Anniversary of the Ibrox Disaster, Shoulder to Shoulder we stand - All at AFC Liverpool." "We have also had a banner custom made which will be unveiled at the Runcorn game and displayed at all our future games. As a one off, and to remember Nigel, we have decided to vote an AFC Liverpool man of the match, which will be chosen by the Rangers fans and it has been named in honour of Nigel Pickup. "A firm decision hasn't been made by Rangers FC as to a 40th anniversary memorial service but plans are already in place for a coach for our supporters to attend, should a memorial service be held in Glasgow on the 40th Anniversary next January. "We have received a lot of praise and feedback from Rangers fans worldwide for our small token of support, but the publicity was not what we were looking at. It was just a show of support in remembering the victims of the Ibrox disaster like people have shown us since Hillsborough. "It looks as though a good friendship has been struck through what we have done. We are a small club, but we have big hearts, and it is only right that fellow football supporters should be remembered as we approach a landmark anniversary.

In the course of a detailed investigation into the history of Lancaster City FC, information and facts have come to light which clearly show that the formation of the club as it is known today was actually 1911, not 1905 as originally thought. A thorough study of local newspaper archives and minutes of Lancashire Football Association committee meetings was undertaken by David Cunliffe, official historian of Lancaster City FC. It was already known the club formed in 1905, Lancaster AFC, folded in 1910 and was believed to have been replaced by Lancaster Town FC in 1911.

However this investigation has revealed the new club would only have been permitted to join the Lancashire FA if it had satisfied the authorities it had no connection whatsoever with the previous Lancaster club. Records unearthed by David Cunliffe confirm the new club, Lancaster Town FC, was indeed a completely new and separately constituted entity from 1911 onwards. Lancaster Town FC was subsequently re-named Lancaster City FC following the granting of the Royal Charter to Lancaster in 1937. David Cunliffe, a long standing Lancaster City supporter, was surprised by his own findings. “I started out trying to prove the club was formed in 1905, or even earlier, but it turned out to be six years later. I hope all the people who celebrated what they thought was our centenary back in 2005 won’t be too upset with me.”

Around The Grounds Marine Park - West Kirby FC

Our pre-season schedule started off with a trip “over the water” to Wirral to take on West Cheshire League, Division One West Kirby. There were plenty of new faces on show that evening as we ventured out on to the pitch which looked like it had not seen much recent attention due to the unseasonably wet weather at that time. It was a dank dark evening as we approached the ground in what seemed like a perpetual drizzle. Upon reaching the ground you enter into the clubs car park which has plenty of park spaces for the usual crowd the hosts would

expect. The facilities for spectators are limited to say the least with no cover around the pitch and limited hard standing facilities which is only available behind the goal at the clubhouse/entrance end of the ground. The entrance end of the ground host the white clubhouse building which has excellent facilities and on the far corner the green dressing room complex which would put some of the changing rooms in the Vodkat League to shame. Continuing around the perimeter of the pitch mid way between the dressing rooms and the halfway line is another green facility which I believe usually hosts the half time hospitality during the league season. Behind the goal at the far end of the railed off pitch is another pitch and a large area behind this. The ground has dugouts on either side of the pitch and no floodlights so should the club wish to progress they would need to address these issues but on the field the club have had an excellent start to the season currently sitting atop their Division and their club and committee would be a welcome addition to the Vodkat League as their hospitality and help on the evening was second to none.

All Our Yesterdays . . . The present St. Helens Town club was reformed after the Second World War and resumed life in the Liverpool County Combination in 1947/48. Programmes were produced on a regular basis and the format changed little over the first seven seasons. Due largely to paper rationing after the War, the Town programme was printed on a single foolscap sheet, folded to make a four page programme, with club notes on the front cover, teams on the inside pages and, for the first six years, advertisements around the team sheet and the whole of the back page. Only for 1953/54 season did the team notes spill over to make up one half of the back page. The price remained at 2d. throughout the period, less than 1p in today’s money. Among the regular advertisers in the early years were Winstanley’s Bakers, Confectioners and Caterers of Junction Lane, in pride of place on the front cover, just above an announcement of the next home fixture. Local hostelries the Junction Inn and the Prince of Wales appeared on the back cover, along with the printers and stationers Cecil Dromgoole, who printed the Town programme in the early years, also those for St. Helens and St. Helens Recs. Rugby League clubs for many years. Football pools were a popular means of betting small stakes to win big money and were represented by Kenco (“Britain’s Premier Pool”) of Wigan and Eze Pools of Warrington, claiming to be “The Premier Pools of the North.” Programmes were printed on a number of different colours of paper, including pink, green, yellow, buff and amber. A special 8-page programme was issued for the friendly game against Manchester City on 27th April 1950, arranged as part of the Bert Trautmann transfer the previous October. Programmes were issued in the same format for the two seasons in the Liverpool County Combination and the first five seasons in the Lancashire Combination, 1949-54. Very few other clubs produced programmes in the County Combination and the majority of clubs in the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination failed to issue. I have a small collection of Town programmes, home and away, and to date, I have not seen Town home programmes for season 1954/55, nor any for the whole of the period 1956/57 to 1966/67. Back in the First Division in 1955/56, I have three home programmes, all printed on flimsy single sheet, 4-page issues, on paper 380mm x 125mm, with details of the fixture on the cover, the rest of which was taken up by advertisements, which also accounted for the whole of page 2 and half the back cover. The teams appeared on page 3. Away programmes are much harder to come by. Possibly the earliest in existence was that published by Ellesmere Port Town for the George Mahon Cup tie on 27th September 1947, an 8-page programme. Three years on and Lytham issued a 16-page programme for the opening game of Town’s promotion season on 19th August 1950. The outer 12 pages, with the exception of the front cover, were

. . . Programme Review Part 1 entirely made up of advertisements with only the inside 4 pages printed specially for the game. Notes from the Manager appear on the first of these pages, the teams on the second, supporters’ club notes and forthcoming fixtures on the last page and, rather disappointingly, the third page had been reserved for Orrys Gentlemen’s Outfitters, who had seemingly not had enough time to prepare their advert. In those days, Lytham shared their Ballam Road ground with Blackpool “B”, sometimes referred to as Blackpool Colts. Town’s first season in the Lancashire Combination First Division is marked by programmes from Earlestown, New Brighton (fresh from the drop from the Third Division North of the Football League, Marine, Nelson, Ashton United and Wigan Athletic. Earlestown and Ashton United produced small-size 12-page programmes, New Brighton’s was slightly larger, but 8 pages, Nelson and Wigan published fold-out 6 page issues and Marine was a 4-page single sheet publication. All were priced at 2d. Illustrated are the covers of the St. Helens Town v UGB programme of 17th January 1948 and away programmes at Ellesmere Port (27th September 1947), Lytham (19th August 1950) and programmes from the 1951/52 fixtures at Earlestown (1st September), New Brighton (20th October), Marine (17th November), Nelson (23rd February), Ashton United (29th March) and Wigan Athletic (26th April). Vodkat League News A Memorable Send Off For Dennis

At the end of August, Norton United Secretary Dennis Vickers retired from teaching, after 38 years at the chalk face. During that period, Dennis taught at two schools and taught a variety of subjects, including Physical Education, Geography and Special Needs. Away from football, Dennis's other main interest is aircraft and flying, and when his colleagues gathered to say goodbye to him, he discovered they had organised a special treat. Dennis explained: "The staff at the school were aware of my interest in flying, and regularly took the mickey about me being an anorak, and they decided to give me a

real send off by organising a balloon flight. I took the flight on Saturday 2nd October, and had to be at the take off site for 7.00am. We started the flight at 7.30 and landed back at around 8.45 am.” "It was a beautiful day with not a lot of wind. There was some mist, but that was okay. "The flight was amazing. We did not cross Norton but travelled across the City of Stoke on Trent, taking in views of the Britannia Stadium and various sights from my teaching days, including the school at which I spent the first eighteen years of my teaching career. We also travelled over various other parts of North Staffordshire before setting down near Leek. It was a memorable send-off and an experience I will never forget."

Every morning a man built like a wrestler gets on the same bus and walks straight past the driver to his seat, declaring in a deep and booming voice, “Big John doesn’t pay”. Eventually, tired of being on the receiving end of such intimidation, the scrawny bus driver decides to take up weightlifting and, six months later, feels confident enough to challenge the big man. As usual, the man gets on the bus the next morning and bellows, “Big John doesn’t pay”. The bus driver grabs the man’s arm and stops him in his tracks. “And just why is that?” he demands loudly, squaring up for a fight. The man suddenly reaches into his pocket, prompting a collective intake of breath from the other passengers. “Because,” he snarls, withdrawing his

hand from his pocket, “Big John has a travel pass”. On a holiday together, a group of men take in a tour of the brewery where their favourite beer is made. As they marvel at all the processes involved, one of them slips and fall into a huge, deep vat of fermenting bitter. While the brewery workers started the desperate attempts to save him, his friends are ushered outside. Half an hour later, the supervisor comes out to tell them that, despite the rescuers’ heroic efforts, their friend has drowned. “Was it a horrible death?” asks one of the victim’s friends. “Did he suffer very much?” “I don’t think so,” replies the supervisor. “In fact, he climbed out twice to go to the loo.” On his first day at work, a trainee zookeeper is given the task of feeding some of the inhabitants, starting at the shark aquarium. He arrives with his wheelbarrow full of dead fish and, as he’s throwing them in, a shark suddenly lunges out of the water at him, so he grabs his shovel from the wheelbarrow and beats the shark to death. Realising what he has done, he slings the shark into the barrow, makes his way to the lions’ enclosure, and throws it in. His next job is to feed the chimpanzees, and all is going well until three of the apes suddenly attack him. Again he defends himself with the shovel, leaving the animals battered to death, and he disposes of the bodies in the same way as before. Finally, he has to visit the apiary to tend the bees, and is attacked by a swarm from one of the hives. The shovel springs into action resulting in a pile of squashed drones, which are dumped into the lions’ enclosure, along with the other corpses. The next day, a new lion is introduced into the resident pride. “What’s the food like here?” asks the new arrival. “Usually boring,” replies a lioness. “But yesterday we had fish, chimps and mushy bees!” Compiled and edited by John Shepherd (Sheffield FC) with cartoon by Paula Shepherd.
