Talk of the Town Good afternoon and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Colne. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. We continued our upturn in form last Saturday as we advanced into the

Second Round of the FA Vase at the expense of NCEL, Division One side Yorkshire Amateur here at Brocstedes Park. We dominated the vast majority of the contest but just couldn’t turn our possession into goals in the first half. The visitors took the lead just before the interval against the run of play after a mix up between Lewis Coyle and Rory Crowther on the edge of the box allowed Craig Heard to nip in and net. If was all Town after the interval and they levelled less than 10 minutes after the restart when Kristan Bell fired home from a corner and just after the hour Chad Whyte latched onto a through ball rounded the keeper on the edge of the box and fired home to put Town in front. Progress was secured on 75 minutes when a fine move culminated with Andy Gillespie crossing from the left and Jack McKay powering the ball home at the far post to put Town in the hat for Monday's draw which saw us given the almost 400 mile round trip to Alnwick Town of the Northern League, Division Two.

We will be running a coach to the game and further details on how to book a seat will be available via the usual channels. On Tuesday we took the trip to Stockport Sports Village to take on Stockport Sports and we again were able to assert our authority on the game and after dominating the opening exchanges it was no surprise when we took the lead midway through he first half. It was nice to see Skipper Andy Gillespie getting back on the score sheet for the first time since he netted here at Brocstedes Park against Nostell in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA

Vase at the beginning of October, his deft chip over the keeper was perfectly weighted after he latched onto a ball turned towards his own goal by a Stockport defender. In the second half a triple change saw the hosts come at Town for the first 5 or 10 minutes after the restart but after we had weathered that particular storm normal service was resumed and Chad Whyte collected a through ball bore down on goal and his effort was blocked by the excellent Connor O’Keefe on his debut only for Marcus Perry to turn the loose ball home. This somehow managed to be the end of the scoring for the night and despite the visitors creating chance after chance they were either squandered or denied by the home stopper but a win and a clean sheet can’t be sniffed at! The afternoon’s visitors have been in excellent recent form and come into this contest on the back of a 4-0 home victory over AFC Blackpool on Tuesday evening. They narrowly exited the FA Vase on Saturday at the hands of favourites to lift the silverware come May Shildon going down 3-2 AET. The Northern League side were rewarded with a home tie against Runcorn Town in a Second Round Draw that has kept the seven remaining NWCL sides apart. We know that we will need to be on top form this afternoon against an outfit who have won the last four contests between the two sides outscoring us 15 to 1 in the process! In Town Today The town of Colne was left without a major football club after the untimely demise of the highly successful Colne Dynamoes club in 1990. That side had won the NWCL, the Unibond League Division One and the Unibond League Premier Division in consecutive seasons, as well as winning the FA Vase and Lancashire Challenge Trophy within the same period. In January 1996, Colne FC was formed by a group of like-minded people under Dave Blacklock. The enthusiasts combined their strengths and knowledge of non-league football and arrangements were made for the new club to use the now vacant Holt House Stadium, used by the previous club. Colne FC applied to join the Lancashire Football Association, the North West Counties League and the

East Lancashire FA. The LFA and the East Lancashire League accepted their application, but much work was needed to be done on the Holt House ground to bring it up to the standard required for the North West Counties League. After a lot of hard work by everyone at the club, the necessary work was completed in time and Colne were recommended for acceptance into the NWCL. The member clubs at the Leagues AGM approved this in June 1996. Colnes first ever competitive match was on the 17th August 1996 against Middlewich Athletic and the result ended in a 1-0 defeat. The team was managed in these early days by Keith Mason, but his side was mainly made up of players from the East Lancs League and they always found the going tough. A further 10 defeats followed until a local derby against Nelson ended 1-1, thus giving the new club their first point. Mason resigned from the club owing to work commitments and Colne’s Vice President, Ken Bracewell, stood in until a new manager could be found. The club appointed Denzil Hart. Hart’s first game in charge was a 6-0 away defeat at the hands of Ashton Town. Two games later and Colne had their first ever victory, a thumping 5-2 win over Bacup Borough. Denzil Hart’s job was always tough and although the clubs performances improved, the results were not forthcoming and the club had to apply for re-election after finishing bottom of Division Two. The clubs total of 23 points would, however, have provided safety in either the previous season or the two seasons to follow as neither of the bottom two clubs from those seasons amassed more than 22 points. It wasn’t all gloom though, and a highlight of that first season was the Reserves, managed by Mick Molloy, winning the B.E.P. Cup at Clitheroe FC’s Shawbridge ground. Having been re-elected to the NWCL for the 1997/98 season, Hart started his plans to see Colne FC become a side to be reckoned with. The performances from his young squad were excellent but the results did not follow as expected and the club finished 18th with 31 points. The clubs third season saw them finish 16th with 40 points in a very tough campaign, which saw eighth position to seventeenth position split only by ten points. The club also saw its first cup victories and reached the League Challenge Cup 2nd round, losing 1-0 at First Division Prescot Cables (who went on to appear in the final) and also the second round of the Division Two Trophy, losing 2-5 at home to Abbey Hey. The clubs fourth season was eagerly awaited but in September 2000 manager Denzil Hart left the club by mutual agreement. In 2001/02 Colne ended the season with their highest ever League position of 14th and it seemed the crop of local youngsters along with a few more experienced players had finally turned the fortunes of Colne FC. In the summer of 2002, James Webster took control of the club to become the youngest Chairman in the League at 24. Webster was a player at the club with plenty of experience and had a strong desire to see the current Colne side emulate the success of their predecessors It wasn’t only on the pitch that results improved as the club embarked on ground improvements with an eye to the future, ensuring that when the time came they would be able to take their place in Division One without any grading problems. 2002/03 season started well enough, but in December 2002 John Lister resigned as manager. Colne Football Club Ross Baxter won the NWCL “Safe Hands” award. Paul Lynch took over as manager and improvements in performances continued, but in August 2003 he left to take over at Rossendale United. The Colne committee responded immediately by appointing Nigel Coates as the new manager and he took Gary Rishton as his assistant. 2003/04 brought back the glory days to Colne with a string of successes. In the League Colne had to play catch up after successful cup runs, but ended the season ten points clear, scoring 102 goals in their 38 games. The completed the “double” by winning the Division Two Trophy 1-0 over Great Harwood Town. The season was capped by an amazing run in the FA Vase which saw them reach the semi-finals before bowing out 4-3 on aggregate to AFC Sudbury. Season 2004/5 saw Colne start off well in the NWCL First Division but run out of steam and a poor run after the turn of the year saw them slide down the table to their eventual finishing position of 10th. The club again had a good run in the FA Vase going out to eventual winners Didcot Town in the 5th round. 2005/6 saw the side record their best ever finish in their short history winning 22 matches and ending the term in 9th place. Colne finished the 2006/7 season in 11th place. The however surpassed themselves during the following season when they were one of the surprise packages in Division One finishing in a club record 5th position meaning they have finished in the top half of the table in each of their four seasons in the top flight of the league. The 2008/09 season was not the best for the Holt House club and they struggled at the wrong end of the table. It took an excellent run of form in the final few months of the season to see them pull clear of the relegation zone and they finished in 18th position. Season 2009/10 started slowly with the team languishing 5th bottom of the Vodkat league at Xmas. However an amazing run of one league defeat in 2010 saw the Reds climb to finish a respectable 8th in the league with a very youthful squad. Season 2010/11 provided further improvements in the fortunes of the club with a creditable 5th placed league finish. Season 2011/12 produced another consistent campaign with an 8th position finish. Season 2012/13 produced another competitive season with a second consecutive 8th place finish. Manager Nigel Coates approached his 10th year in charge of the Reds but his tenure came to an end in mid October 2013 with Steve Cunningham take over the reigns with another former Colne favourite Ted Cockett as his No.2. Steve and Ted have ambitious plans for the club and wasted no time in bringing in a few new faces to boost the playing squad, consolidating for the rest of the season but with big hopes and plans for the following seasons. With all this going on, due to the fantastic efforts of a strong and loyal band of followers and officials including the resurrected ‘Red Army’ and the continued support from our Main Sponsor ‘XLCR Vehicle Management’ there is a bright future on the horizon for Colne FC. Steve has added a number of experienced faces to the previous year ’s squad and is looking to improve on the 9th place finish achieved in 2013-14.

From the Chair Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties League Premier Division game against our friends and rivals Colne FC. Let’s hope the players, officials and supporters of today’s visitors have had a pleasant journey and enjoy their short stay with us.

It’s been a good week for Town as we made FA Vase progress last Saturday, turning in an impressive performance in defeating Yorkshire Amateur 3-1 before getting our first league win for some time as we ran out comfortable 0-2 winners at Stockport Sports on Tuesday evening. The reward for our FA Vase win is a long trip to Northumberland where we will face Alnwick Town (pronounced ‘Annick’) on Saturday 22nd November in the Second Round. Our hosts currently lie in 16th place in the Ebac Northern League Division Two (step 6 and equivalent to the NWCFL Division One). Thanks to Hattons Travel who have given us a good deal on transport, providing a luxury 39 seater coach which is regularly used by Saints and Warrington Wolves! There may be a small number of places available on the 400 mile round trip to Alnwick with the trip costing just £10 return. It is anticipated we will be leaving St Helens around 9.15am and leaving Northumberland at approximately 6.30pm (final details to be confirmed). If you’re interested in travelling with the team see me at today’s game. Today’s visitors are having a fine season and defeated Town 4-0 at the XLCR Stadium back in August in the reverse league fixture. They bowed out of the FA Vase last Saturday when they lost 2-3 after extra time to one of the competition favourites Shildon. Congratulations to Colne’s Danny Boyle who was voted the NWCFL Player of the Month for October - more information in today’s programme. Congratulations also go to our Club Vice President Jim Barratt who will receive a 50 year service award from the Football Association prior to kick off at today’s game - a superb achievement and a just reward. We also congratulate our own Player of the Month for October sponsored by Johnsons Toyota Liverpool, Gaz Grant who joins Karl Bergqvist (August) and Hamish Falconer (September). We’ve no midweek game so next Saturday is our next fixture when we make the short journey to league leaders Runcorn Linnets. The second half was a completely different story and we had to dig in for long periods as West Allotment came out fighting. We showed a lot of resilience to keep them out, before scoring minutes from time to put the icing on the cake. Needless to say the coach trip home was a good one and great for team spirit". We need to kick on in the league now and put a little run together before we play in the next round". It was looking comfortable for the most part, but we gave away a sloppy goal and suddenly West Didsbury had their tails up. The defence is not the meanest in the division for nothing though, and we saw it through. "It was a great turn out by the Hillmen fans again, and the lads commented afterwards how much they appreciate the support they get. We're always torn when they draw the next round as we do love a trip somewhere unknown, but every side would ultimately prefer a home tie, I think." 1874 Northwich 2 Ashton Town 1 1874 Northwich manager Ian Street: "I’m really pleased to have progressed into the next round, we as a club are keen to go as far as we can in the competition. "A poor and very difficult surface at the Barton Stadium contributed to a very scrappy game where both teams struggled to play any decent football. Both teams had good opportunities but I felt that we had the greater percentage of possession and tried to press hard and win the game. It’s probably the worst 90 minutes of football that we have played this season. Ashton Town worked tremendously hard and were always a constant threat, and I did think the game would be decided in extra time or even a replay but a last minute goal by Daley Woods decided the result in our favour".

1874 Northwich – the club will be represented for the first time at the wreath laying ceremony this Sunday for the Act of Remembrance at the Cenotaph, Church Road, Northwich. Members of the club’s board will also represent the club in attending the Remembrance Service being held at Silsden’s Angel Telecom Stadium on Saturday, prior to the Premier Division game between the two clubs. Cammell Laird 1907 – seven Lairds reserve team players were selected for the

West Cheshire League representative squad to face their counterparts from the Mid Cheshire league in a game at the end of last month. Lairds Chairman Frank Games said: “This is clearly great

news for the club as a whole, and in particular our management team led by Dave Lewis”. Abbey Hey – Club Vice-President Allan Grafton received a Community Champion Award at last week’s Pride of Gorton Awards. Club Secretary Tony McAllister said: “It was a deserved award for all the hard work he does for this community”. Alsager Town – the Bullets’ under 15s team hosted opposition from an Irish professional club’s academy side at Woodpark Stadium last Sunday. The Finn Harps academy side, whose parent club play in the League of lreland Division One, were due to play a scheduled friendly at Port Vale, but when that was cancelled Town were approached to host the game. Wigan Cup – the two remaining NWCFL representatives in the Wigan Cup have been kept apart in the quarter final draw. Wigan Robin Park will host Garswood, and Ashton Athletic will visit Atherton Town. The ties will be played on Monday 30th March 2015. Rory Patterson – the Northern Ireland international, who spent two years at FC United of Manchester in the NWCFL between 2006 and 2007, collected a runners-up medal playing for

Derry City against St Patrick’s Athletic on Sunday in the FAI Cup Final at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Two years ago, Patterson scored twice in the final after coming on as substitute when Derry won 3-2 against the same opposition, but on Sunday he and his side were on the wrong end of a 2-0 defeat. Maine Road have announced that manager Lee Bennett has resigned. Lee took over the managerial reins in the summer following the departure of joint management team Chris Thomas and John Morrey. He leaves with Road sitting tenth in the Premier Division, having played 22 games. A club statement said: "Maine Road would like to thank Lee for his input this season, and wish him all the best in the future". In the meantime club Secretary Derek Barber will be in charge of first team affairs for the rest of the season, assisted by another Road stalwart Jeff Newman.

NWCFL News The FA has announced plans to commemorate the centenary of one of the most iconic moments of the First World War - the 1914 Christmas Truce – as part of a week of remembrance activity in December 2014. 'Football Remembers Week' will take place from 5-14 December. A joint collaboration between The FA, the Premier League, the Football League and the British Council, the aim is to engage football fans and players at every level about what took place on

Christmas Day one hundred years ago on the battlefields in Belgium. On 25 December 1914, soldiers from both sides put down their weapons and crossed into ‘no man’s land’ to share in an impromptu ceasefire. First-hand accounts from the time include references to football being played and photographs taken. Every club in the country – from the Premier League to the grassroots - is being asked to create a unique photographic record of football a century on from the Christmas Truce. The same activity will happen at every match – a mixed squad photo featuring both teams in the spirit of the togetherness shown by troops from both sides in December 1914. Teams will combine for a mixed squad photo before kick-off. This picture can be uploaded to social media using #footballremembers and will be automatically uploaded to a special website – www.footballremembers.com. The site will act as a moment of record of football in 2014, a century on

HRH The Duke of Cambridge, President of The FA, said: “It promises to be a powerful way to engage and educate young people about such an important moment in our history. The FA has proposed a procedure for clubs to follow during the 'Football Remembers Week', which is as follows. For ALL matches taking place from 5-14 December, all players involved will pose together in a mixed group photograph as a mark of respect to those on both sides that took part in the 1914 Christmas Truce. Each home team should

nominate someone to take the photo. Fans, teams and schools will be asked to upload their pre-match pictures via social media over the course of Football Remembers Week. Any match of any size can be uploaded, from school to Sunday league fixtures, five-a-side matches to kickabouts in the back garden. Those posting photos to social media should use #footballremembers to ensure it is uploaded to the special footballremembers.com website. Any other information is welcome. The website will act as a moment of record of football in 2014, a century on from the First World War, and will be preserved for future generations. Football Remembers kicked off in May 2014 when the four partners launched a Football Remembers education pack that was sent to more than 30,000 schools across the UK. It includes resources to help children learn about the Truce – including eye-witness accounts, photos, drawings and letters from soldiers some of which have never been published before.

Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured opposite) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge.

Past & Present 1992-93 Mick Holgate presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving

on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town

manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club ’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club ’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation.

2012 - 2013 Ian Granite became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 2012-13 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price (left) took over the managerial reigns with Paul Jones as his assistant. Match Report Town open up gap after overdue league victory Stockport Sports 0-2 St Helens Town Tuesday’s game at Woodley saw St. Helens Town earn their first league victory in eight weeks and with it, they opened up a six point gap over the bottom five sides in the Premier Division table and whilst their sights are

currently set on their next FA Vase tie at Alnwick Town in two weeks’ time, this was a welcome boost to their main aim of retaining their top flight status in the NW Counties League, a run which extends back to the inception of the league in 1982. Five of their six league victories this term have come against teams below them in the table and this latest victory was ample revenge for the 4-2 home defeat at the hands of Stockport Sports at Brocstedes Park back in August.

Without the lively Kris Bell due to work commitments, Karl Bergqvist was drafted back into the attack, but Town suffered an early blow with the loss of Gaz Grant, who suffered a puncture wound to his foot as a result of a heavy contact with the studs of an opponent after only ten minutes. This gave an opportunity for young Marcus Perry to join the fray. Town soon seized the initiative against a sluggish Stockport side who have so far failed to record a home victory, their two other wins coming at fellow strugglers Abbey Hey and Bacup. The home side were fortunate to go into the half-time break only one goal in arrears, that coming after 25 minutes when a cross from the left was flicked on by Chad Whyte to Andy Gillespie, who cleverly lifted the ball over the advancing goalkeeper Daniel Bell to give St. Helens a deserved lead. Soon afterwards, Town should have secored again after Bell could only parry Whyte’s shot and the keeper was extremely lucky to re-gather the ball at the second attempt inches away from the feet of Perry. The second half was virtually one-way traffic as Town tightened their grip on the game and, following a break by Whyte on 55 minutes, the centre-forward’s shot deflected off the keeper and Perry hit home the loose ball. After that, it

appeared only a matter of how many the visitors would win by, but try as they might, Town could not press home their advantage. Whyte missed three glorious chances, two by a matter of inches and Bergqvist, Gillespie and Perry all went close, but were thwarted by Bell’s good fortune and on any other given day, St. Helens might have scored five or six, such was the extent of their supremacy. Just before the end, Rory Crowther pulled off two good saves after Stockport threw caution to the wind, but St. Helens held out for a comfortable victory. Next up is the visit of Colne on Saturday, followed by difficult away trips to Runcorn Linnets and AFC Liverpool, so the three points secured here were priceless in the fight to avoid relegation at the season’s end. A Brief History The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again for the 1955/56 season, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is still the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was to win the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire

secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Sadly, all three have passed away in the last few years. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, include John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and next to bottom in 2011-12, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up and they battled well to avoid relegation, their status being confirmed with a couple of games remaining. 2013-14 was a mirror-image of the previous campaign, with a 14-game unbeaten run between September and December putting the club just behind the front runners for two thirds of the campaign. Granite resigned in November 2013 due to work and family commitments and his assistant Ian Price took over the reins, assisted by Paul Jones and Nick Matthews, but the long breaks caused by the winter weather interrupted their earlier rhythm and Town finished the season once again in the lower reaches, although never in any serious danger of the drop. Following the demolition of the Knowsley Road ground in 2010, Town have led a nomadic existence up the road in Ashton-in-Makerfield, sharing Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street ground for three seasons before moving across town to Brocstedes Park as the guests of Ashton Athletic in 2012. The current season is scheduled to be the club’s last in exile, as plans are in place for re-location back to St. Helens for the 2015-16 season at the Council-owned Ruskin Park site, currently undergoing massive redevelopment and a brand-new facility awaits. In readiness for the move, the club is undergoing a radical re-branding, adopting the town’s coat of arms as their badge once again and reverting next season to their traditional blue and white colours in preparation for a return to the town in 2015.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARDS Premier Division Danny Boyle, Colne FC Danny re-joined Colne this year having played in the Evo-Stik League last year. In September Danny scored eight

goals in seven games and he carried this form into October, scoring seven goals in five games including two consecutive hat tricks. Against Heaton Stannington in the FA Vase Danny scored the opening goal after 55 minutes which was the catalyst for Colne to go on and win the game comfortably. Danny was involved in the build up for two of the other goals scored and in the second half ran the opposition defence ragged. 1874 Northwich at home proved a tough nut to crack, and despite his best efforts he was unable to beat their defence. In the derby game away at Barnoldswick, Danny rescued a poor Colne first half performance by equalising on the stroke of half time from the penalty spot. In the second half Colne upped their game with Danny scoring within 5 minutes of the restart and completing his hat-trick on the hour mark to ensure in the end a comfortable victory.

Danny and his strike partner Spencer Jordan produced a complete performance away against AFC Liverpool, They caused the Liverpool defence all sorts of problems resulting in Danny scoring his second hat trick of the week , as well as hitting the cross bar and laying on the pass for his strike partner to score. Away at Silsden Danny did everything but score, coming up against a keeper in inspired form saving shots in three one on one situations, and hitting the outside of the post with a penalty. In total to the end of October, he had scored 15 goals in his last 12 games, and scored in 9 out of the last 12 games. Match Report Town destroy Yorkshire Amateur in the Vase

St Helens Town 3-1 Yorkshire Amateur St. Helens Town turned in an electrifying performance on Saturday, with a scintillating 3-1 victory over Yorkshire Amateur to move into the Second Round Proper of the lucrative FA Vase competition

The team has made great progress in the last few weeks, largely due to the reorganisation of midfield, with Aaron Morris moving forward out of defence and the recent additions of Gaz Grant and Kris Bell. Morris now has more licence to push forward and the signings of Grant from Runcorn Town and Bell, together with full-back Ryan Duffy, joining from Warrington League side Rylands, have added pace and thrust to the attack.

Town were marginally the better side in the first half, but failed to trouble visiting keeper Suwara Bojang, Grant, Morris and Bell all putting chances over the bar, but the Ammers served notice of intent three minutes before the interval when in a rare venture upfield, Harrison Blakey hit the post with Rory Crowther at his mercy. The visitors then took the lead right on half-time when, following a mix-up between Lewis Coyle and keeper Crowther, Craig Heard stole possession and placed the ball into the empty net. The referee’s whistle gave Town some respite but after the resumption, they came out with all guns blazing. Five minutes after the interval, Chad Whyte almost scored in bizarre circumstances after he fell whilst lining up a shot but still

managed to back-heel the ball against the post. However, the equaliser was not far away and it was no surprise when Bell levelled from 12 yards out on 54 minutes. Bell almost scored again on the hour, but Bojara, who had an excellent game, pulled off a good save. Three minutes later, following good work from Morris, Whyte burst through, took on big centre-back Daniel Freeman and Bojang and fired home to put Town ahead and the victory was completed fifteen minutes from time when Gillespie tore down the left, Bell dummied and Jack McKay slotted home with a neat finish to put the tie beyond the Leeds side’s reach. The margin of victory might have been much more convincing, but for sterling work from Dominic Noteman at the heart of the visitors’ defence and the agility and positioning of Bojara between the posts. The draw for the Second Round Proper, to take place on 22nd November, paired Town with Alnwick Town but before that, Ian Price will be preparing for three more league games. Glyn Jones
