Good afternoon and welcome to Knowsley Road, this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Silsden. Let me open by welcoming the Players, Management, Committee and Supporters of Silsden to St Helens. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this afternoon. It has been a fortnight since we last gathered here at Knowsley Road to see a 2-1 victory over Congleton Town to secure our first win of the season over a top four team. In a game where we had to come from a goal down it was nice to see us battle hard and take a three points with a brace from Iain Dyson. The following Saturday saw us take the short trip to Ashton Athletic to a ground where we had been humiliated almost a year before when we went down 5-0 on Boxing Day. The winning team again scored five but this year it was Town who took the spoils after an end to end game where both sides looked to be keeping in the festive spirit generously gifting goal after goal to the opponents, on what was a difficult surface. This afternoon encounter should be a good one as both sides have been in excellent form of late and are battling to keep pace with the teams at the top of the table. Being the end of the year and as we have played half of our league games if seems a good time to reflect on the previous year. This time last year we hosted Silsden as we struggled at the foot of the table and recorded our first win for several months. What a difference a year makes, we are flying at the other end of the table and under Gary Bickerstaffe we look a totally different proposition. We have almost as many points at the half way point of the season as we gained in the whole of last term and have won 12 matches, when we only won 14 last term, quite an improvement I am sure you will agree. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year on behalf of everyone involved at St Helens Town AFC. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for this Vodkat League Premier

Division encounter with our friends and rivals Silsden FC. Let’s hope their players, officials

and supporters, along with today’s match officials and our own home support have had a

pleasant journey and enjoy our hospitality during their short stay as well as an entertaining encounter!

Our last home encounter saw the lads come from a goal

behind to defeat Congleton Town 2-1, securing three vital

points with both goals from Man of the Match Iain Dyson,

pictured left with Match Sponsor Chris Newman of Flexible

Business Interiors. In doing so, condemning our Cheshire

visitors to their seventh defeat in ten games. Town continued

their winning ways last Saturday when we made the trip to

Ashton Athletic. Although I missed last season’s visit to Ashton I had not expected the news of a 5-0 drubbing which

reached me while on holiday - by all accounts a real horror

show having only days earlier recorded a fine victory over

today’s visitors Silsden. Last Saturday was an end-to-end

cracker and while not for the purist, the game proved

thoroughly entertaining with Town eventually winning 5-4.

The pitch condition led to some shocking defending - having gone a goal down to our hosts

Town his back before half time to take a 2-1 lead. However, Ashton never gave up and

levelled at 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 (and had a penalty brilliantly saved by Graham McCall) and just as it appeared that we would have to settle for a point Iain Dyson hit a stoppage time winner, via

the inside of both posts, to the relief of the Town faithful. Today’s game will prove another

tough encounter as our visitors are on a good run of form with five wins and a draw from their

last eight outings - and their only defeats came at the hands of Bradford Park Avenue (5-6 aet)

and run-away league leaders Newcastle Town (0-2 last Saturday). Town currently lie in fifth

place with a six point advantage over Silsden and a game in hand.

Congratulations to Phil Mitchell (pictured left) who was the

club’s Player of the Month for November. Many thanks to

all-expenses paid car for a week!!

Colne. Sandwiched in between will be a trip to Alsager Town

on Saturday 2 January 2010.

Finally, on a sad note I was made aware of the sudden death of Ray Shiel, a stalwart of the

former St Helens Town AFC Social Club ‘The Town Ground’. A former professional boxer in the

1960s, Ray was a well known character in the Town - our condolences go to his family.

In Town Today . . . The first ever Silsden AFC was formed at a well attended meeting at

Silsden Liberal Club in September 1904. The fledgling club adopted the

blue & white playing kit that had been used by the recently defunct

village rugby club, and a field adjacent to the original rugby field on Keighley Road was hired. It is amazing that the same field is used to

this day by the current Silsden football club.

The club president kicked off the club’s first ever game against Bradford

Parkfield later in the month, the home crowd entertained by Silsden

Brass band prior to the match. It was not to be a winning start

however, as the visitors triumphed 1-0, and a second defeat followed, a

4-5 defeat at neighbours Sutton FC.

1905-06, saw Silsden become founder members of the Keighley & District League. Unfortunately success eluded them, finishing 5th in the league after being in the running for

the title early in the season, and beaten in the Charity Cup final by Keighley Celtic 0-1, in

front of 1000 wet & windswept spectators at Lawkholme Lane. For the 1909-10 season,

Silsden FC resigned from the Keighley league, citing too few league fixtures, and recognising

the need to improve upon a loss of £13 on the previous season. They, along with Keighley

Celtic, Sutton United and Sutton FC therefore joined the Bradford & District League.

For 1911/12 Season Silsden returned to the Keighley League and in 1913/14 won the

Keighley Charity Cup for the second time after defeating Cullingworth 3-2. With the spectre of war disrupting the 1914-15 season, a reduced programme saw Silsden lifting the Keighley

League title for the first time in six seasons.

The rebirth of the Keighley League occurred for the 1919-20 season, and Silsden FC emerged

from their hibernation among familiar names. Despite Keighley Celtic failing to reappear, the

Keighley League was to experience its golden years of expansion throughout the early 1920s.

Silsden were at this time among a number of local clubs wanting a higher grade of football in

which to play, and it was no surprise when the Keighley League’s top teams began to look to

further themselves away from local competition. Silsden became founder members of the West Riding County Amateur League. Silsden failed to make an impact in their new league,

their first away win not coming until February

For 1924/25 Silsden moved to the South Craven League. This was to herald what was to be a

lean time for the club, who struggled badly in their new surroundings. The South Craven

League came to sudden and abrupt end when its sides joined forces with others to form a

strong Airedale & Craven League in 1931. Silsden won the inaugural A&C title after a titanic

battle with Keighley Town and old rivals Sutton United. They defeated Keighley Town in the

final game of the season 5-4 after twice being two goals in arrears to lift the title ! The team also won the Charity Cup and the Craven Morrison Cup finals.

At the end of the 1933/34 season Silsden moved to the Bradford Amateur League in the hope

of increasing their support and revenue. In their first season they were pipped at the post for

the title and had to settle for runners-up place, but they did retain the Charity Cup. After

finishing bottom in 1936/37 Silsden moved back to the Keithley & District League, winning the

League Cup in their first season. In 1939/40 with many teams closing down due to the war,

Silsden won the League title, the League Cup and the Charity Cup. Silsden emerged after the

war and entered the Craven & District League but after one season moved back to the

Bradford Amateur League. In 1951 they moved again, this time spending 8 seasons in the Wharfdale League.



. . . Silsden Football Club This heralded another period of success for the club with League titles and cups being won.

However, as ever the wheels turned and by the end of the decade Silsden moved back to the

Craven & District League to regroup. In 1963/64 Silsden won the League and Cup double and

on the strength of that were elected straight into the West Riding County Amateur Leagues top division for the following season. The demise of successful local side Keighley Shamrocks

saw the players from that team move en masse to Silsden. Over next decade the side would

win the Keighley FA Cup seven times, and lift both West Riding County Amateur and West

Yorkshire League titles. Yet, despite their immense success, events would transpire that

would lead them to a self inflicted downfall by the end of the 1970’s. In 1971/72 the club

won the League title but at the end of 1972/73 Silsden were unable to raise a team to play in

the League Cup final on the specified date and were expelled from the League. The club

found a new home in the West Yorkshire League Division One and promptly won the title but

there was no automatic promotion, so they were forced to play a second season in Division

One. Silsden won the title again and this time were allowed promotion to the Premier Division where they took the title at the first attempt.

An altercation between players from Silsden and Fryston at the League’s Presentation

evening lead to both clubs being expelled from the League. Silsden managed to regain

admittance to the West Riding County Amateur League. Incredibly Silsden were expelled

from a league for the third time in six seasons, this time for violent and abusive behaviour

from players and officials. Silsden also lost the use of their ground after breaking the tenancy

agreement. With no home, the club broke up.

However, Silsden United, a Sunday team who had taken over the facilities, changed their

name to Silsden AFC as part of the tenancy agreement and in 1980 a Saturday team was

formed which joined the Craven League. In 1983/84 they were accepted into the West Riding

County Amateur League and in 1985/86 won promotion to the Premier Division. However,

things didn’t work out and after finishing second from bottom in 1987/88, the club had

withdrawn from the League by Christmas 1988 and folded. A new Silsden AFC was formed.

They started life in the Craven & District football league Division Two and spent three years

in the Craven League, moving up to the Premier Division and in the last year set a new

record of going through the season unbeaten in all competitions. They then joined the West

Riding County Amateur League in Division Two and quickly gained promotion up into the Premier Division where they enjoyed three seasons.

In season 2002/03 Silsden set another record in going through the season unbeaten in all

competitions. They won the League title and the League Cup. 2003/04 saw Silsden again

walk away with most of the trophies. As well as winning the League, they became only the

fourth team in history to win the County Cup three sesons running, they also took the

Keighley FA Cup, the Keighley FA Suplementary Cup and the Keighley FA Sunday Cup,

although they had to settle for runners up place in the League Cup final, losing 3-1 to

Campion.

In season 2004/5 Silsden gained promotion to Division 1 in the North West Counties Football

League in their inaugural season by finishing runners up to Cammell Laird. 2005/6 saw the

side finish their first season in Division One in 14th position a great achievement in only their

second season on the league. The following season saw them replicate the previous season’s

14th placed finish but this time they gained four extra points. The following year they

improved they finished in a club record 10th position. Last term saw the Yorkshire men

improve again this time finishing in 9th position. Work was completed in May on the new

clubhouse & changing facilities at their Keighley Road base. Work and fundraising is

underway in order to get the ground and facilities up to standard in order to see a return of Silsden AFC to its natural home in Silsden.

Mrs Linda Vickers It is with deep regret that the League has to announce the death of Mrs Linda Vickers, wife of Norton United Secretary Dennis Vickers. After a period of illness, Linda passed away on Tuesday afternoon. The League Management Committee, officers and member clubs offer their sincere condolences to

& Yorkshire Amateurs. Selby are currently 9th in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, and Yorkshire Amateurs are 12th in the Northern Counties East 1st Division. Selby were knocked out of the FA Vase by Nelson 2-0 earlier in the season. No date

has been set as yet for the Quarter Final.

Around The Grounds Brocstedes Park – Ashton Athletic

A reasonably neat and tidy ground that’s been tucked away in Ashton-in-Makerfield’s back garden, Brocstedes Park plays host to the home games of Ashton Athletic FC. The ground is tucked away from the main roads and housing estates and situated next to the M6 motorway. Brocstedes Park is at the end of an old farm road that Petr Solberg would have difficulty driving down and makes the car park at Knowsley Road look level!

Although once you make your way through the turnstiles and into the ground you are presented with a reasonably tidy facility. There are large areas of grass on the far side and the far end of the ground behind the hard standing which are used for pre match warm-ups and a huge mountain of sand in the corner. The clubhouse is average, in both size and service, the barman wasn’t particularly friendly or helpful, not what you want out of a barman! Seating would be at a

premium with two football team’s worth of people in there and the pool table doesn’t work terribly well. All vantage points are catered for through with a seating and covered standing stand down one half of the pitch with a reserved seating stand for club officials only. The rest of the ground is open standing so the covered areas would quickly become in demand on a poor weather day. The pitch itself has looked better and the poor recent weather will have had a hand in this, but at least you can get right up close to the action when standing on the perimeter fence. Not the best ground in the league, but certainly far from the worst. I remember the Boxing Day trip there last year had the man on the turnstiles tell us that Ashton Athletics’ programme was the best in the league, this time round not so much as the three A4 unstapled sheets of paper were a paltry effort. All in all, average score and average matchday experience.

St Helens Town AFC . . . Re-formed in 1946, by a group of local businessmen, fronted by George Fryer, St. Helens Town obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line. Having played a number of friendly matches, the team entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1946/47 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground.

The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were made quickly to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but the tenure of the ground became uncertain between 1951 and 1953 and several matches were played at the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league

ground at City Road resulting in some encouraging crowds: indeed, a permanent move to City Road was mooted in 1953, before the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October of that year. The ground was subsequently purchased and developed and a social club and floodlights were added in more recent years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. A win over Darwen also secured the Bass Charrington Cup. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.



. . . A Brief History Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games, including 3-1 victories at Squires Gate, Colne and the Wembley-bound Glossop North End, before Runcorn Linnets were blitzed 5-0 in the final game. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was

transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. There is a real spirit of optimism at Knowsley Road these days and, under the guidance of Gary Bickerstaffe’s ambitious management team and with a new reserve side entered in the Liverpool County League, the club is looking forward with justifiable hope for a successful future. Introduction to the . . . Graeme McCall: Keeper in his second spell at the club after rejoining in the close season. Good shot stopper and equally adept in the air, also possess a good distribution with accurate throws and kicks. Will be looking to stake a claim for the keeper’s jersey. Kevin Woods: Young Goalkeeper who has took up the number one mantle after Andy Lynskey broke his ankle last term. He retained the shirt for the majority of the season and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets.

Neil Jones: Commanding centre half now in his fifth season at the heart of the Town defence. Strong in the air and on the ground and has been know to bully a few experienced strikers. Always likely to pop up with a goal or two especially at set-pieces. Chris Burke: Rejoined the club last summer after leaving to join Prescot Cables. He has played higher up the pyramid with Hucknall Town & Northwich Victoria. A solid defender who reads the game well and stopped many an opposition attack last term. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club last season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. His attitude on the park is much improved from his previous spell. Rob Hanley: Striker who has joined the club in the off season from Greenall Padgate St Oswald where he was top scorer in the Cheshire League last term having netted 30 goals. He has pace, power and a great drive and looks dangerous every time he gets the ball. Iain Dyson: Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club’s top goalscorer last term for the second time in three seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Graeme Mitchell: Joined Town from Warrington last summer for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. Centre forward who scored plenty during his time in the UniBond, had a spell with Bamber Bridge at the turn of the year. Phil Mitchell: Brother of Graeme, followed a similar path. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Another who made a great impact last term and finished the season as 2nd top goalscorer. Adam Gilchrist: Speedy winger who caused problems for many a defender last term. He played in many various positions during last term including right back, right midfield and centre midfield. Marc Stephens: Young midfield who had a fine start to life at Town. Signed last summer he came into his own when moved into central midfield and linked up well with Karl Ledsham during the final stages of the last term. Dougie Pitts: Vastly experience defender who joined in the summer from Wigan Robin Park. He marshals the back line well and is an excellent header of the ball. A regular in the team after missing the opening few games of the season while holidaying in the southern hemisphere.



St. Helens Town squad Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club this season. After some early substitute appearances he’s now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who’s good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Mark Evans: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club in the close season after a spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR & Wigan Robin Park. Stephen ‘Ben’ Kay: Another close season signing from Wigan Robin Park. The centre back has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. Mike Fargher: Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defender and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. Nick McLoughlin: Left sided defender equally at home pushing into midfield. He has the ability to deliver an excellent cross and having been a regular last season he will be pushing to retain that place after a solid start to the 2009-10 season. Paul Monteith: Now in his second season at the club, “Monty” was involved during most of last season but will be looking to make more starts this term his is not afraid to put his foot in. Netted his first goal for the club against East Villa in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Previously at Flixton and Ashton Town. Peter Birch: Young defender recently signed from Unibond outfit Burscough. Peter possesses good pace and agility. His height gives him a distinct advantage both in defence and at attacking set pieces. Luke Faulkner: Seventeen year old central defender who has recently joined the club from Mid-Cheshire outfit Garswood United. Has composure beyond his years which has been evident across a number of excellent performances for club. Brian Hatton: The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. His legs may not be as fast at they used to be but his brain still works at optimum speed and he has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian was almost ever present last season only missing the final match after picking up a nasty injury at Runcorn. Former Stockport & Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Lee Riley: Joined the club last season as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables. Gary Bickerstaffe: Rejoined the club late last season as manager having had a previous spell as a player in the 1990s. His arrival last term ensured we staved off relegation comfortably with eight wins from our last 11 league encounters. A mid-field dynamo at the height of his playing career Gary has graced a number of clubs including Congleton Town, Winsford United and Bangor City and has been assistant Manager at both Warrington Town and Congleton and Manager at Garswood United. Other squad players include prolific strikers David Burns and Jamie Foster along with Andy Gillespie and Danny Clarke who have all stepped up from St Helens Town Reserve team football so far this season.

Fan’s Eye View Good afternoon and welcome to Knowsley Road for this afternoon’s Vodkat North West Counties Premier League match against Silsden. May the travelling fans enjoy the match but not the result. There’ve been some crazy times since we were all last gathered here for the Congleton Town match a fortnight ago and amazingly the Town bubble hasn’t burst yet. Sitting comfortably 5th in the league and seemingly knowing how to win a game from any

position. The Congleton match here a fortnight ago was a good example of this as despite being the game low on entertainment, Town battled hard and never gave up despite going behind in the match. Last season, Town would have been right royally stuffed by that Congleton side, this season the resolve and determination is there to not give up on encounters. Anybody who was in attendance for the away fixture at nearby Ashton Athletic will understand what I mean. That was a match that featured several challenges for St Helens Town and they persevered in the face of all these issues. Taking the lead on three separate occasions and being pegged back on each occasion. Town refused to take anything other than maximum points from the game and two minutes into injury time, Iain Dyson’s strike that hit the inside of

the post, rolled along the goalline with a tad of backspin before hitting the other post and nestling into the corner of the net, ensured that Town left Brocstedes Park with everything they deserved. You have to begin to wonder how much battle Town currently have left in them at the moment having used so much of it up in recent games, hopefully they will have plenty left in the tank for this afternoon’s game with Silsden being the visitors to Knowlsey Road. Occupying 8th place in the league Silsden are having a consistent season to date. However, their better players have now left them behind and a group of locals now turn out for the side, not too dissimilar from St Helens Town. This match is happening almost exactly a year on from the pervious fixture between the two sides but under very different circumstances. Town entered that match last season firmly rooted to the bottom of the division and having not won a game in their last 14 attempts. Silsden were in a similar position to this term and looking to build on that, but the underdogs prevailed as a Town team that couldn’t win a raffle until that point, stuffed Silsden to the tune of a 4-1 scoreline. Something similar this year would certainly not go amiss. Town have got a really good chance to cement their 5th place in the league this afternoon and enter Christmas in the top 5 of the league as opposed to the bottom 5 last season, just goes to show how far the team has come in that year spell. Lets make sure we all get behind the players this afternoon and cheer them on to what will hopefully be another victory. The support the club has received this season so far has been fantastic, lets not make this afternoon an exception. Stand tall and play proud boys, we’re right behind you.

Vodkat League News Cotto Faces The Fight Of His Life

member John Cotton (pictured left) faces months of major

treatment after being diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Anyone who knows Cotto will not be surprised to hear that he is

facing up to the challenges ahead with his usual determination

and good humour, and is looking on the positive side after

being told that he should be able to make a full recovery.

John explained: "I've had problems for about 18 months and

had blanked it out of my mind until recently. After being

diagnosed, I had a scan to determine the extent of the

problem, and I've been told it hasn't spread.

"I now face about 3 to 6 months of treatment, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy,

as well as an operation to remove the tumour. The treatment starts almost immediately,

and the operation will be in February.”

"On the day I was told it hadn't spread, I felt like it was the first day of the rest of my

life. I said to the consultant "just tell me what I've got to do to fight it and I'll fight it". He

began to explain about the treatment and what it involved, and he said I might need a bag

at my side for a few weeks. I said to him that wasn't a problem as I've been with the wife for 35 years, and he said "If that's your attitude towards all this, you'll do for me".

"I don't mind people knowing, because at times like these you need your family around

you. After all the years that I've been involved with this league, I feel like I've got a wide

circle of extended family in the North West Counties League, and as long as I know I've got

their support I'll be OK".

Cotto's determination to bounce back as soon as possible is obviously even greater than

normal, given that his beloved Newcastle Town are striding away at the top of the Premier

Division.

"Since we joined the league in 1987, I've only missed about a dozen of our games in that

time. With us being on target to win the league this season there's no way I'm going to

miss out on that, and be missing games. I've got to get to our games for the sake of my

grandson Mitchell, as I take him with me to all our games and he won't want to miss

any. If there's any way that I can schedule treatment in around our games I will do".

In the meantime, it could be that the enforced break will give "Mr Newcastle" the chance to

do what he has been talking about doing for years - write a book chronicling his adventures and experiences in non-league football.

"During the treatment period, when I'm resting up it will give me time to think about

material for the book I've always threatened to write. I'm sure there will be times when I'll

get the chance to look back through old programmes and handbooks, and use the time to

record my thoughts and memories.

"It's possible that I might not feel much like writing at times, and someone suggested that,

rather than writing everything down, I should use a Dictaphone - but I'd rather use my

finger like everyone else."

St Helens Town Juniors . . . The future’s bright for Town

Established just three years ago, and now an FA Charter Standard Club, the ‘Town Juniors’ has grown into one of the largest junior outfits in the region. With over 300 local players and nineteen teams the club provides football for both boys and girls from the age of 5 to 16 years. To date the club has been extremely successful both on and off the field, winning a plethora of cups and league titles across all age groups and has recently seen Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, B u r n l e y ,

Preston, Wigan and Crewe offer contracts to a number of its players. The junior section has formed a community partnership with Premiership giants Liverpool FC, enabling the club to access a range of education resources as well as coaching sessions for young players in St. Helens and at the LFC Academy. In addition, all junior coaches are invited to events at the LFC Academy aimed at expanding their knowledge of the game and coaching skills. Steve Leather spokesman for the ‘Juniors’ said, ‘We are here to provide an excellent standard of coaching and football for local youngsters: with our long term ambition to provide a wealth of talent to the club’s First Team.’ The Town Juniors’ major aim for this season is to develop the Girls’ team (pictured above) under the guidance of recently appointed ‘Head of Girls’ Football’, Katie Chedotal. Match Report Sat 12th December; Vodkat Premier Division Ashton Athletic 4-5 St Helens Town

Never let it be said that St Helens Town do things the easy way! The visitors secured all three

points this afternoon at Ashton Athletic but not before putting the Town faithful through the

ringer. Despite early pressure from the visitors it was to be the hosts who took the lead against the run of play on 10 minutes a free kick from the left was not dealt with by the Town

backline and Rob Bodie seized the opportunity to send the ball home. The next twenty

minutes saw the visitors press the hosts in an attempt to gain parity. Graeme Mitchell

collected a through ball rounded the keeper and stayed on his feet when he was caught by

the stopper his cross was met by Rob Hanley but he could not keep his effort down. Hanley

then shot wide of the target after a quick throw from Phil Mitchell. Iain Dyson carved an

opening when he did well to turn on the edge of the box but his effort failed to test the

keeper. Phil Mitchell will have been kicking himself for net scoring on 25 minutes when he was

found on the far post by a cross from John Elias on the right. Mitchell’s touch was cleared off

the line by Stephen Wallace. For all the Town pressure Athletic almost made it 2-0 when Wallace ghosted into the box but could not direct his free header past McCall in the Town

goal. The pressure paid for Town on 34 minutes Phil Mitchell was cynically hacked down by

Chris Banasko after a surging run and brother Graeme sent the free kick into the box which

Ben Kay headed home. Phil Mitchell got past two defenders and into the box on 41 minutes

only to be felled from behind but amazingly no penalty was awarded. The winger got his

reward in the first minute of added on time at the end of the half when his great touch saw

him find space to apply a composed finish and make it 2-1. Town did not hold their advantage

to the interval as in the third minute of added on time the ball was sent into the Town box

from the right and Paul Prescott poked the ball home, an obvious foul was overlooked in this move must to the annoyance of the Town fans.

St Helens started the second half in the ascendancy and regained the lead on the hour, Marc

Stephens found Dyson on the right of the area and he did well to get into the box and power

the ball home from 12 yards. Again the lead was to be a short one as a rash challenge from

McCall saw a penalty awarded and Prescott sent it home high and central. On 70 minutes

Hanley got into the box but his touch looked heavy and an easy take for Fitzpatrick in the

home goal, the stopper however made a mess of the collection and the Town man ran the ball

into the unguarded net. Surely Town would not relinquish the lead again? On 75 minutes a

right wing corner was sent into the Town box and a well executed challenge looked to have cleared the danger until the referee pointed to the spot in to perplex the vast majority of the

crowd in the ground. Prescott again stepped up to take the spot kick but this time McCall

atoned for his earlier error by making an excellent save away to his right. With time running

out Prescott got into the box and pulled the ball back towards substitute Luke Fletcher who

had time to pick his spot to level matters and look like taking a point for the hosts. The final

act of the game was to come in the second minute of stoppage time when David Burns found

Kay on the edge of the box and he in turn released Dyson who found the net with the aid of

the inside of the left and right post to send Town on the short journey home with all three

points.

Pearce Seal of Approval Bottesford Town celebrated the opening of their brand new changing rooms this week with the help of England Under-21 manager Stuart Pearce. The former England and Nottingham Forest full-back officially opened Town's £350,000 complex at Birch Park.

And Pearce was thoroughly impressed with the new facilities at Bottesford. "Places like this are fantastic, the amount of teams going through is very impressive," Pearce told the Scunthorpe Telegraph. "I came through the non-league system as a player so I probably appreciate what this means to a club like this as much as anybody. "It's good for the community too because it gives men and women, boys and girls all the chance to come and play. "I played in the equivalent of the Conference (Blue Square Premier Division) and the facilities in my day were nowhere near as good as this. "Some of the dressing rooms in those days were a right state, so this is a big step up from those days. "It's a great facility and I think the community are very lucky that a lot of people have put a lot of money and effort into the place." The fanfare and impressive new changing rooms are all well and good, but how much will it directly effect the club's first team in their efforts to move up the football pyramid. Well, according to Town first team manager Raz Clayton, it certainly can't hurt in helping him try to attract better quality players to Birch

Park. "It's certainly a big advantage for Bottesford compared to what we had previously, so it's going well for the future," Clayton said "On the pitch it's not going as well as I had hoped but sometimes it's like that in football, you don't just get what you want. "But we'll see if we can attract a few more players."

Flood Anguish For Taddy KoolSport NCEL Division One highflyers Tadcaster Albion's ground has once again been hit by floods in the past couple of weeks. Their Ings Lane ground is situated right next to the Wharfe and, over the years, has suffered badly when the river bursts its banks. The recent high level of rainfall has meant that it has happened again with reports saying that the water on the pitch was, at its highest, over a metre deep and close to getting into the clubhouse. It led to the

postponement of their big league clash with fellow promotion rivals, Leeds Carnegie. Ironically, the reverse fixture that was due to be played a few days earlier was called off due to a waterlogged pitch at Farsley Celtic.The flooding was a blow to a Tadcaster Albion side looking to get through 2009 without a problem. It's after their home fixture schedule was disrupted for long spells twice last year, causing several thousands of pounds worth of damage. However, the waters quickly receded and the pitch was fit enough for the home clash with Rossington Main that ended in a 4-4 draw.

Mid-term report Half-way through the league season is a timely opportunity to take stock of the progress made at Knowsley Road and the management can feel justly proud of the club’s current position. Gary Bickerstaffe (pictured left) took over the reins at the end of March 2009 and the team finished with a flourish, winning six of the last eight games to end the season in 16th place with 46 points from 42 matches. This time around, in

Gary’s first full season, they stand in 5th place with 39 points from 21 games, only 5 points off second place. The club, as a whole, has moved forward, on and off the field. The establishment of a reserve team for the first time in years has been successful, with that side doing well in the Liverpool County Combination competitions, as well as beginning to provide the first team with talented players, some of whom are pushing for permanent first-team places. The financial position has also improved, with marvellous support from our generous sponsors in particular. The first team began the season with a target of 20 points from the first ten games. That

target was beaten by 3 points, with seven wins and only one defeat and that to the 100% league leaders, Newcastle Town. Bickerstaffe’s men got off to a flyer, with a 5-1 win at Abbey Hey and were unbeaten away from home until a disappointing defeat away to Congleton in

mid-October. That form was extended to the FA Cup qualifiers, with wins at Parkgate (pictured right) and - most spectacularly - at high-flying Colwyn Bay before defeat was met with at Cammell Laird, a game which proved to be Karl Ledsham’s last game before his move to Skelmersdale United. In contrast, there were early exits from the FA Vase at Padiham and the Liverpool Senior Cup, after extra time, at home to Warrington Town. The loss of Ledsham (pictured left), coupled with the long-term unavailability of established players such as Brian Hatton due to injury and Andy Webster, away in the USA, would have seriously affected any team, but the emergence of youngsters such as Peter Birch and Luke

Faulkner, coupled with solid defensive contributions from John Elias, Ian Frazer and goalkeeper Graeme McCall, along with recent signings Ben Kay and Dougie Pitts, have given the team more steel at the back following a lean spell during

A look back at . . .



. . . the season so far. late October and early November, during which disappointing losses were suffered at Newcastle and Maine Road, together with two poor shows at home to Squires Gate and Glossop. Happily, since that Glossop defeat, the team has remained unbeaten and has closed the gap on all the teams above, with the exception of runaway leaders Newcastle Town. The improvement on last season is there for all to see. Double victories have been secured against Runcorn Linnets, Ashton Athletic, Formby and Abbey Hey and no games have been lost to teams occupying the bottom 12 places in the current table. The home wins over Runcorn Linnets and Nelson were a joy to behold and when they’re in full flow, the forward line of new signing Rob Hanley and the Mitchell brothers are among the best in the Vodkat League. On present form, Town could make a realistic challenge for second place. 44 goals have been scored in league fixtures: Hanley has scored 8, Iain Dyson and Mike Scully 7 each and Graeme and Phil Mitchell nine between them. We’ve met Newcastle twice

already, but have yet to play New Mills and travel to Ramsbottom, all difficult games but, in contrast to this time last year, all those games are winnable, as Town look towards their best finishing position since the move to Knowsley Road 10 years ago. There might also be a realistic chance of silverware, as Town are already through to the Third Round of the Vodkat League Cup, Norton United standing in the way of a passage through to the quarter-finals.

Santa’s Alive . . . A Catholic man goes into the confessional and says, “Bless me

Father, for I have sinned. Last night I went with seven different

women.” The priest gives him seven Hail Marys as penance, and

adds, “Now you must buy seven lemons, squeeze them all into a

glass and drink the juice.” “Will that cleanse me of all my sins

and make me pure, Father?” asks the man. “No,” replies the

priest. “But it will wipe that damned smile off your face!”

A park attendant is putting leaves and rubbish into a bin liner. A

passer-by stops and asks, “Do you need any qualifications to do

that?” “No, not really,” replies the attendant. “You just take the

equipment the Council provides, and then pick it up as you go along.”

Scientists have made a breakthrough and discovered the gene responsible for

shyness. They claim they would have found it years ago, but it was hiding

behind two other genes.

In a letter to her parents, a young mother tells them their grandson, who they

see only on rare occasions, has grown another foot over the past year. A couple

of weeks later she receives a return letter expressing her parents’ concern at

the news, and enclosing a sock!

A man walks into a fishmonger's carrying a large cod under his arm. “Do you

make fishcakes?” he enquires. “Of course,” replies the fishmonger, cheerily.

“How many do you want?” “Oh, just the one,” says the man. “With candles,

please – it’s his birthday.”

Cliff Richard, Bill Gates, the Pope and a hippy are in a plane when the pilot

suddenly has a heart attack and dies. None of them knows how to fly a plane,

so they decide the only thing they can do is bail out. When they look for

parachutes, however, they can find only three. Cliff Richard grabs one and

shouts, “I’m the nicest and most popular man in the world, and I deserve to

live,” and he jumps out of the plane. Then Bill Gates grabs one and shouts, “I’m

the cleverest and most influential man in the world, and I deserve to live,” and

he too jumps out of the plane. The Pope and the hippy look at each other, and

the Pope says, “My son, I have lived a long life, and I have lived a good life,

and I am ready to die. You take the last parachute.” “There’s no need to do

that, Your Holiness,” says the hippy. “The cleverest man in the world has just

jumped out with my rucksack!”
