Good afternoon and welcome to Knowsley Road, for this Vodkat League Premier Division contest against Nelson. Let me open by welcoming the Players, Management, Committee and Supporters of Nelson to St Helens. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this afternoon. It been a long while since we last played here at Knowsley Road on a Saturday afternoon, 25th April was the date and a 5-4 win against Abbey Hey was enough to secure the Houdini-like escape from relegation with a few games to spare. It will be nice to get back on our home pitch on a weekend and I am sure we would take a similar scoreline! Town have had mixed bag since we played here against Formby a week on Tuesday securing that hard-earned 1-0 victory over a much improved Formby side with a fine individual goal from John Elias who was later sent off. Last Saturday saw us visit Flixton and again we triumphed in a tight contest this time 2-0 with goals from Rob Hanley and Graeme Mitchell. Tuesday saw us take the long trip “down South” to take on Congleton Town in a top of the table clash with the hosts going into the game in 3rd position and our boys in 4th position. We had the worst possible start as Graeme McCall was beaten in the 2nd minute and a mistake from the stopper in the early stages of the 2nd half put paid to any chances we harboured of getting something from the game. Gary and the boys will be looking to b o u n c e b a c k f r o m t h e disappointment against a Nelson outfit who have had some mixed results recently and who secured a victory over Town here last April incidetntley in the midweek game after the Abbey Hey match. Its not all doom & gloom as after 11 matches we have won half as many games as we did last term in 42 matches and secure half the total of points from last term! Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for this our first home Saturday fixture of the 2009-10 season. We welcome the players, officials and supporters of Nelson Football Club as well as our home support. Following four successive wins against Formby 0-4, Runcorn Linnets 1-2, Formby 1-0 and Flixton 0-2 we bumped back down to earth with a 2-0 reverse at fellow high flyers Congleton Town on Tuesday evening. Whilst it was far from a poor performance by the lads, expectations are currently very high at the club, and disappointment was felt all around as we simply failed to turn in the performance that we know we are capable of. Not sure how hard the opening goal after just two minutes hit the lads but we didn't do a great deal until the final ten minutes of the first period. The second half was pretty much the same and the mistake which led to Congleton’s second compounded the disappointment. On a more positive note the lads have performed exceptionally well in the opening quarter of the Vodkat League fixtures and are still on target for Gary’s two points per game average which would see us among the challengers at the end of the season. After a few too many seasons competing at the wrong end of the table it’s a delight to be going into games full of optimism - and as with all sport sometimes we are left disappointed. It’s a good time to reflect on the progress we’ve made since Gary Bickerstaffe took charge towards the end of last season - seven wins from our final ten league outings and a similar number of wins from our opening 11

games to date is fantastic form and is a credit to the lads and all the backroom staff - let’s keep it going for another 30 plus games and who knows where we might find ourselves. Off the field the news of the Bert Trautmann Trophy fixture on Sunday 15 November (see details elsewhere in the programme) is now being circulated by the Manchester City marketing team and we are hopeful of a bumper crowd to commemorate Bert’s transfer from Town to City 60 years ago this month. In Town Today . . . The original Nelson football club was formed in 1881 after a group of local people decided to form their own team. However, it wasn’t until 1889/90 that they joined the Lancashire League on its formation. The team started well and in 1895/96 won the title. However, in 1898/99 the original club was disbanded and for reasons that are unknown, were suspended by the Lancashire FA. Nelson Town were formed and they joined the North East Lancashire League. In 1916 the club closed for the duration of the war. The club reformed near the end of 1918 and a decision was taken to join the Central League,

a competition that included a number of Football League teams reserve sides. This decision proved to be a turning point as in 1921, the thirteen non reserve teams in that league were elected en masse into the new Football League Division Three North. Nelsons first League game was played on the 27th August 1921 and a crowd of 9,000 turned up at their Seedhill ground to watch them play Wigan Borough. The following season 1921/22 a strong finish saw them take the Division Three North title and win promotion to Division Two. Nelson’s time in Division Two however only lasted one season. The club escaped one re-election in 1928, but in 1930/31 they finished bottom of the table for the second time and this time they lost their football league

place to Chester City. The club struggled on in the Lancashire Combination, but on 7th August 1936 they disbanded. After the war, Nelson FC was reformed and the club entered the Lancashire Combination and once again hit a successful period. In 1949/50 they won the league title and the Challenge Cup. With the football league expanding, Nelson narrowly missed out on regaining league status. The ballot for the two new clubs to be admitted had to be held three times because of tied votes, but in the end Shrewsbury and Scunthorpe won the votes. 1951/52 saw the title return to Nelson again, they also reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, losing to Oldham Athletic. They also reached the first round of the FA Cup in 1953/54, this time losing at Witton Albion. The man at the forefront of this successful period was a young player manager called Joe Fagan. He left for Rochdale in 1954 and from there to Liverpool where he was eventually to guide them to many national and international successes. Fagan’s departure heralded a change in fortune for Nelson. They won the Challenge Cup 1959/60. The club however was relegated to Division Two in 1965/66. With the start of the Northern Premier League in 1968/69 the League was reconstituted to one division. Nelsons fortunes fluctuated, bottom in 1973/74, Bridge Shield winners in 1975/76 and 1981/82 and claimed 3rd place. The Lancashire Combination merged with the Cheshire County League in 1982



In Town Today . . . and Nelson were placed in Division Three of the new league. They were forced to move from their old Seedhill ground to make way for the new M65 motorway and they moved into Victoria Park. When the league was reorganized in 1987 following the departure of more clubs to the UniBond League, Nelson were placed in the new Division Two. However, at the end of the 1987/88 season their ground failed the grading requirements for the NWCL and Nelson were expelled, moving into the West Lancashire League Division Two. It was a difficult period for the club, finishing no higher than 15th, but a lot of hard work by everyone at the club brought their ground up to a high standard and in 1992 they were readmitted into the North West Counties League. In 1996/97 Nelson beat Garswood United to win the Division Two Trophy and for a while in 2000/01 it seemed as if they had won promotion to Division One after finishing ahead of Atherton LR. However, Castleton had fielded an ineligible player in their final match against Atherton and won the game with the ineligible player scoring one of the goals. The league ordered the match to be replayed a few days later and Atherton won to snatch away the promotion place from Nelson. At the start of the 2004/05 season, ex-Blackburn Rovers coach David Hall took over as manager of the team and he set about rebuilding the side with young

players who proved themselves to be a difficult side to beat. In that first season under Hall, Nelson finished in 6th place. 2005/6 saw Nelson’s most successful season for many years. At the turn of the year it seemed they had too much to do to make a challenge for promotion, but by the end of February, only one defeat in seven games brought them into contention. With the possibility of three clubs going up from Division Two, the race was on. For a while the clubs couldn’t be separated but on 10th May 2006 a 1-0 home win over Cheadle Town secured third place for Nelson. Although the battle was over, they ended their season with a massive 7-2 win over Eccleshall and a 7-3 win at Castleton. Nelson had finally won their place in Division One. Their first season in the top flight, saw the club battle for survival but Nelson secured their status in the top tier of the NWCFL with a 20th placed finish after some good results, conceding 110 goal in the procrss. The following season saw Nelson finish rock bottom in the 20 team top flight but the club survived the drop due expansion back to 22 teams. After a couple of tough campaigns in the now renamed Premier Division, season 2008-09 saw a welcome improvement and some decent football from the Blues as they comfortably avoided the relegation places, amassing 45 points and finishing in 17th position.

Around The Grounds Valley Road - Flixton Tucked away in a residential area of a Manchester suburb lies Valley Road, the home of Flixton FC. A ground that has something of an unvarnished look to the place with bits of tarpaulin and other materials leaving certain areas of the ground looking like the builders have been in and not tidied up after themselves properly. However it does feature one of the best clubhouses in the league that is spacious, the drinks are reasonably priced and you have as many Albanian sports channels as you can shake a stick at. All viewing tastes are accounted for with a covered seating stand being present down the nearside touchline, as well as covered standing stretching down the entire touchline on the other side. For those that prefer a more elevated view of the action there is a balcony connected to the clubhouse, but I never figured up how to get up there, my assumption being that it was club members only or

something like that but I

could be wrong there. Aside from the balcony viewing the ground does have a couple of other unique features, the first of which being the number of electric pylons that adorn the area and the cables that stretch over the ground. Also the floodlights are located behind the goals as opposed to down the sides of the pitch, something I would assume that goalkeepers playing

on a midweek night match would not be appreciative of. Not the best ground you will see on travels across the North West, but certainly far from the worst. Overall Score: 6/10



Town History Formed in 1946, by a group of local businessmen, fronted by George Fryer, St. Helens Town obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line. Having played a number of friendly matches, the team entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1946/47 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several

reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following

season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division.

Improvements were made quickly to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but the tenure of the ground became uncertain between 1951 and 1953 and several matches were played at the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road resulting in some encouraging crowds: indeed, a permanent move to City Road was mooted in 1953, before the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October of that year. The ground was subsequently purchased and developed and a social club and floodlights were added in more recent years.

Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing

only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. A win over Darwen also secured the Bass Charrington Cup. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence.

The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.



Town History Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bick-erstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the

last eight games, including 3-1 victories at Squires Gate, Colne and the Wem-bley-bound Glossop North End, before Runcorn Linnets were blitzed 5-0 in the final game.

St. Helens Town boast an im-pressive “Hall of Fame”, includ-ing legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann (pictured right), who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glitter-ing career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely res-cued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad mem-ber in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included Eric Moore (Everton), John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goal-scorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase win-ning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

There is a real spirit of optimism at Knowsley Road these days and, under the

Kevin Woods; Young Goalkeeper who has took up the number one mantle after Andy Lynskey broke his ankle last term. He

retained the shirt for the majority of the season and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Neil Jones; Commanding Centre Half who now in his fifth season at the heart of the Town defence. Strong in the air and on the ground and has been know to bully a few experienced strikers. Always likely to pop up with a goal or two especially at set-pieces. Chris Burke; Rejoined the club last summer after leaving to join Prescot Cables. He has played higher up the pyramid with Hucknall Town & Northwich Victoria. A solid defender who reads the game well and stopped many an opposition attack last term. John Elias; Strong centre half who returned to the club last season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. His attitude on the park is much improved from his previous spell. Paul Monteith; Now in his second season at the club, “Monty” was involved during most of last season but will be looking to make more starts this term his is not afraid to put his foot in. Netted his first goal for the club against East Villa in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Previously at Flixton and Ashton Town. Iain Dyson; Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the clubs top goalscorer last term for the second time in three seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Graeme Mitchell; Joined Town from Warrington last summer for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. Centre forward who scored plenty during his time in the UniBond had a spell with Bamber Bridge at the turn of the year. Phil Mitchell; Brother of Graeme followed a similar path. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Another who made a great impact last term and finished the season as 2nd top goalscorer. Brian Hatton; The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. His legs may not be as fast at they used to be but his brain still works at optimum speed and he has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause



Town Pen Pictures havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian was almost ever present last season only missing the final match after picking up a nasty injury at Runcorn. Former Stockport & Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Adam Gilchrist; Speedy winger who caused problems for many a defender last term. He played in many various positions during last term including right back, right midfield and centre midfield.

Marc Stephens; Young midfield who had a fine start to life at Town. Signed last summer he came into his own when moved into central midfield and linked up well with Karl Ledsham during the final stages of the last term. Ian Frazer; Midfield player who joined the club this season. After some early substitute appearances he’s now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who’s good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Rob Hanley; Striker who has joined the club in the off season from Greenall Padgate St Oswald where he was top scorer in the Cheshire League last term having netted 30 goals. He has pace, power and a great drive and looks dangerous every time he gets the ball. Mark Evans; Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club in the close season after a spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR & Wigan Robin Park. Stephen “Ben” Kay; Another close season signing from Wigan Robin Park. The centre back has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. Mike Faragher; Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defender and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. Dougie Pitts; Vastly experience defender who joined in the summer from Wigan Robin Park. He marshals the back line well and is an excellent header of the ball. A regular in the team after missing the opening few games of the season while holidaying in the southern hemisphere. Nick McLoughlin; Left sided defender equally at home pushing into midfield. He has the ability to deliver an excellent cross and having been a regular last season he will be pushing to retain that place after a solid start to the 2009-10 season. Peter Birch; Young defender recently signed from Unibond outfit Burscough. Peter possess good pace and agility. His height gives him a distinct advantage both in defence and at attacking set pieces.

E-Programme a First for Saints St. Helens Town have launched an electronic version of their matchday programme. It is intended the 'e-Programme' will be made available a few days after each home fixture and will be in addition to the full colour printed programme available on match days at Knowsley Road. Chairman John McKiernan said, 'Apart from the 'glossy' covers the programme is designed, edited and printed completely in-house to keep the costs to a minimum. In a start to the season where home attendances have exceeded expectations with our first three games seeing average gates of 160 it's been difficult to gauge programme numbers. 'At our last home game we sold three times the amount of programmes compared with the total number sold in the previous two visits of Newcastle Town. And we could have sold more.' 'No club wants to miss out on programme sales and more importantly the opportunity to get information to supporters. However, a club cannot afford to over estimate programme numbers and be left with too many spares.

'I regard the 'e-Programme' as an opportunity for fans who miss a game or who follow from a far, sponsors and potential sponsors to keep up-to-date with club news and see the quality of the programme available on match days.' John added, 'Whilst nothing can compare to the real thing, there's a nice feel to the e-Programme with the ability to flip pages just as you would with a 'printed' programme, with the option to click on the bottom right hand corner of each page. You can also zoom in and out of all the pages. 'The real bonus is that the process of creating the electronic version is free and our 52 pages only took a few minutes. The publication is then available on the internet and there's no need for hosting large files.'

Vodkat League News Imperfect Ten - The Extra Time Woes Of Colls

On Monday 28th September Atherton Collieries lost after extra time to Padiham in the Lancashire Co-Operative Challenge Trophy. The defeat was notable for extending an amazing run of ill fortune for Colls in games that go to extra time, as Club Secretary Emil Anderson explained.

"On 17 February 1999 Colls went to Prescot Cables and won 2-1 in the Floodlit Trophy. The winner was scored in extra

time by Chris Arnold. Since then we have played in ten games which have gone to extra time and failed to score in all ten. The games are as follows, with scores after 90 minutes in brackets:

"No wonder when extra time commenced on the night against Padiham I thought 'here we go again'. I was not wrong unfortunately. We hit the bar before Padiham scored in the 99th minute. Fan’s Eye View Good afternoon and welcome to Knowsley Road for this Vodkat North West Counties League Premier Division match against Nelson. May the travelling fans enjoy the match but not the result. So finally it’s happened, two months into the season and after 15 games, St Helens Town are playing a home match on a Saturday. Yes the floodlights

should not be required this afternoon. The last time we were all gathered here was eleven days ago when Town played Formby and battled out a 1-0 victory, since then two more games have been played with varying results. The trip to Flixton on the following Saturday saw the Town fans travel (all eight of us if you are to believe Flixton’s attendance figure) to see Town turn out a decent performance with goals from Rob Hanley and Graeme Mitchell securing a 2-0 victory that moved Town up a place in the league. Although not all of us saw the end of the game with a certain member of the support leaving early to witness the defeat of the Town’s rugby side in the grand final of the Rugby League Super League, despite the rest of our best efforts to persuade him otherwise. With the rugby team having failed to win

any Silverware this season for the first time since 2003, it’s always good to know that there is a sports team in this Town that is still winning at the moment. The winning run of 4 games came to an end last Tuesday though when Town visited a Congleton Town team flying high in the league. Individual errors and a performance that wasn’t at 100% saw Town fall to a 0-2 defeat that wasn’t helped by an extraordinarily poor referee, one can only hope there was a level headed assessor present in the ground. However Town still find themselves in a healthy 5th position in the league at the time of writing and if you had offered me that at the start of the season I would have snatched your hand off.

To this afternoons’ match now and our opponents Nelson have made a decent start to the season and currently lie just behind us in 6th position. Town only managed to take a single point from Nelson last season in a 1-1 draw at Victoria Park before being defeated 0-3 in the home fixture the day after securing their mathematical safety from relegation the match before. Obviously Town will be looking to improve on these results this time around and will look to put the defeat at Congleton behind them with a good performance this afternoon. Once again let’s get behind the lads and hopefully cheer them on to a victory. Stand tall and play proud boys, were right behind you.

Town News Keeping Up With The Joneses

Back in August we told the story of the work that Glyn Jones of St Helens Town had been carrying out to unearth details of the club history. The story was of particular interest to Chadderton's Paul

Jones, who thought that his Grandfather, Peter Jones, was the Town manager from 1968 to 1971. Paul explained: "I saw the article on the Vodkat League

Website about the history of St Helens Town, and I contacted Glyn to asking if he had any information from the time when my Grandfather was at the club. "Glyn took the time and effort to have a look through his records, and was able to give me some details. Of course, searching for records from 40 years ago can be very difficult, but Glyn took the time to try and help me and it is much appreciated.

Paul advised the club “I have spoken to my Granddad who said he was not

the manager of St Helens Town in the Lancashire combination championship season of 71/72.

I know he talks of his days at St Helens very fondly and as I understand they

were a good side. He tells me stories of that era and all of them are fond memories. The funny thing is that I may also be able to help Glyn. My Granddad has some paper clippings and pictures from a scrap book which I have now put on to a disk, and I will be sending the information to Glyn to add to his archives." I knew he has some paper cuttings glued in a scrap book from his days at St Helens Town. If I remember rightly, as it is a number of years since I have seen them,. I think there may also be a few pictures in there. I think he said his reason for leaving Town was because he kept getting I owe you notes left in the club safe and without money he felt he couldn’t attract the calibre of players he

needed to keep improving. He left town to move to Preston North End. I’m not sure of his exact role/title at Preston but that was where he moved to from St Helens Town. After that he went on to manage in the Welsh League at Holyhead. I do have a few connections with Town, the first one obviously being my Granddad. I also played in the same junior team, Rocket FC as your current Goal keeper Graeme McCall.

Match Report Tuesday 13th October; Vodkat League Premier Division

Congleton Town 2-0 St Helens Town

St Helens Town lost their 100% away record or should that be gave it away after a poor performance on a night keeper Graeme McCall will want to forget in a hurry. The visitors had the worst possible

start as the erratic match official Mr. Marshall caution Marc Stephens for the first challenge of the

game which made no contact with the Congleton winger. This was quickly followed by a piece of

indecisiveness in which Dougie Pitts allowed the ball to bounce instead of meeting it to head it clear

and the home skipper Scott Dundas tried his luck from 30 yards out, which 99 times out of 100

McCall would have claimed on this occasion with the stopper less than 6 yards off his line the shot was allowed to go over him centrally and into the net much to the bemusement of the travelling

fans. The visitors were rocked and the hosts saw plenty of the ball in the first quarter of the match

whilst St Helens Town attempted to regain their composure. On 15 minutes Pitts gained a degree of

redemption as he turned a dangerous left wing cross from Danny Griggs over the bar with Dundas in

attendance. On the 25 minute mark the visitors got going and a fine spell of pass and move

culminated in skipper Iain Dyson collecting the ball on the edge of the box in a good position for a shot, he however decided to play in Rob Hanley whose shot was tipped over by Matt Conkie but the

assistants’ flag was up for offside and the effort would not have stood. The next opening fell to

Graeme Mitchell as he drove from the middle of the park and for a moment the visitors had a 3 on 3

with brother Phil and Hanley in attendance space opened up for Graeme to have a shot, but his effort

went the wrong side of the left hand upright.

The hosts could have doubled their advantage on 31 minutes when Mark Fitton found space on the

front post but could only direct his headed effort wide of the right hand post. A quick throw on the

right released John Elias and his cross was half cleared to Graeme Mitchell on the edge of the area

but Conkie held his effort. Lewis Short was the next player to try his luck but McCall managed to

gather his effort at the second attempt. At the other end Phil Mitchell was causing problems for the

Congleton backline he had a drive from the left which culminated in a shot from the edge of the box and Conkie held, his next attack was stopped by a set of studs in his chest to which Mr Marshall

bizarrely awarded an indirect free kick, did not book the offender and allowed the Congleton players

to encroach into the 10 yard exclusion zone and nothing came from the free kick.

The hosts started the second period well, Griggs almost doubled the Congleton lead three minutes

after the restart when he curled an effort from the right of the area which struck the upright and was cleared. This was followed by a counter attack which saw Dundas somehow manage to fire a right

wing cross wide when it was easier to score. The visitors conspired to put the game beyond

themselves on 56 minutes when a dubiously awarded free kick which was sent into the box from the

left McCall came for the cross but only succeeded in punching the ball into the net. On 58 minutes

Graeme Mitchell disposed a Congleton defender and looked to advance on goal but was pulled back

and in keeping with his performance the referee allowed play to continue. With time running down the visitors pressed forward in an attempt to get back into the contest, Dyson shot over the bar,

Hanley headed a free kick wide of the post and Dyson failed to hot the target after an error from

Conkie which saw the goal unguarded. Further pressure from St Helens saw Mike Scully and Phil

Mitchell link in the area with the latter creating space and his shot looked to be arrowing into the top

corner but summing up the teams’ night it struck Hanley on the back and the chance was lost. St

Helens’ performance was not up to scratch on the evening and the game plan will not have been helped by conceding early in both halves and manager Gary Bickerstaffe will not be happy with the

manner in which they were conceded. The boys will need to pick themselves up and dust themselves

down before Saturday’s home game against Nelson.

Changes at AFC Fylde AFC Fylde have recently parted company with 1st Team Coach Colin Methven and Assistant Manager Paul Eastwood. Chairman Dai Davis stated “Both Colin and Paul have been wonderful servants to the club and it is with regret we have had to take this decision. They can leave the club with their heads held high after some fantastic achijevements both as players and managers. We felt a change to the management structure was needed and this move was in the best interests of the club going forward.” Former Blackpool FC and Wigan Athletic defender Methven has been with the club for since the mid 90’s joining first as a player then as Coach to assist Mick Fuller in a successful era through the West Lancashire League, North West Counties Leagues and their FA Vase win in May 2008. 34 year old Eastwood, Club Captain in their Kirkham and Wesham days joined the club in the 2001-2002 season from Fulwood Amatuers and after leading the team to numerous successes he retired from playing after the FA Vase final to take an Assistant role to Fuller for their assault on the Vodkat Premier Division last season. The club is now looking to recruit a new 1st Team coach to assist Fuller in their

inaugural season in the UniBond 1st Division North after the club’s indifferent start to the 2009-2010 campaign. Points Deductions for Two Clubs Following a UniBond League meeting last Sunday First Division North clubs Curzon Ashton and Harrogate Railway Athletic both had three points deducted from their playing records for fielding ineligible players in their wins against Harrogate Railway Athletic and AFC Fylde respectively. Both players were regulars with their clubs last season but had not been registered for the current campaign when they made their first appearances this term. The points deductions will not be shown in the league tables until the fourteen day time period allowed for any appeals has elapsed

The ever-changing fixture list

Spare a thought for the Fixture Secretary of the Vodkat League and his colleagues in similar positions throughout the Football Pyramid. Not only has he to fit in 42 league matches for 22 clubs the Vodkat Premier Division, a number of which share grounds with other clubs in football and rugby league, but he has to take account of the clubs’ progess in the FA Cup, FA Vase, Vodkat League Cup and the County and other knock-out competitions, not to mention the bad weather which seems to rear its head at every stage of the season these days. Fans will be aware that, in our Division, Town share Knowsley Road with the Saints and Silsden share Keighley’s ground. Added to that, Runcorn Linnets share with Witton Albion and, in all three cases, the hosts have the upper hand when it comes to precedence of fixtures. Ground-sharing is a relatively recent phenomenon. Going back into recent history, most non-league clubs did not have floodlights 20 years ago, so the fixture pattern revolved around early-evening fixtures at the beginning and end of the season and re-arranged games took place on midweek afternoons, with the resultant catastrophic effects of low gates and lack of players’ availability. Go back 60 years and more, the make-up of the season’s fixtures was quite different to that which applies today. Looking at the Football League, clubs in the top two divisions would play 42 games each, beginning with around 10 games for each club from late August to the end of September, every Saturday was allocated to league fixtures, apart from the FA Cup Third Round, played on the first Saturday in January. The first four midweek dates featured two pairs of games, home and away, against two other clubs. For example, in 1954/55 season, Everton began on 21st August at Sheffield United and met Arsenal and West Brom. twice each, all tea-time kick-offs, before the dark evenings set in. There was no talk of International breaks then and games were allocated on Christmas Day and Boxing Day (for many years home and away against the same opponents), Good Friday and Easter Monday (Easter Tuesday in Yorkshire) and, if the calendar threw up Christmas Day on a Thursday, teams would play three times in three days! For instance, in 1924/25, Everton met Newcastle United at home on Christmas Day, travelled to St. James’ Park for the return 24 hours later and the following day, played at home to Birmingham. They also played at home on New Year’s Day, even though it was not a recognised Bank Holiday until 1973. Three games over Christmas and three in four days at Easter was the order of the day until very recently, not only in football but also in rugby league. For Saints, it was always Leigh on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, Wigan on Boxing Day and Good Friday and, for a good many years, the first two games were Widnes home and away. These patterns survived in rugby league until the early 1970s, but have largely disappeared from the round ball game, where the main considerations seem to be avoiding local fixture clashes between two teams

All Our Yesterdays in the same city and meeting the demands of television. Whilst football saw some variation in war-time with simplistic home and away pairs of fixtures against one team then another, the first main change in the fixture structure was the innovation of floodlights in the late 1950s. This led to more relaxed fixture planning with kick-offs standardised at 3pm every Saturday and 7.30pm in midweek and Christmas Day fixtures were abolished after 1957. The option of playing on Friday nights was adopted by some clubs, quite successfully, for example, Tranmere Rovers and Stockport County, and Sunday games were introduced in 1974, initially as a means of avoiding the power cuts prevalent at the time. Whilst satellite television has dictated the scheduling of fixtures on Sundays at the top level of the game, it has largely been ignored further down the pyramid, but Friday nights have being tried again this season, by a number of clubs, notably Warrington Town and Bacup Borough. The current season’s fixtures in the Vodkat League Premier Division have already been hit by adverse weather, resulting in waterlogged pitches at Bacup and Formby in early September and another three such games were postponed only 11 days ago. These instances of postponements will be repeated time and time again across the league. Even though fashions come and go, with regard to fixture planning, it seems we still can’t rely on the weather. Snow and ice are less of a problem these days, but global warming has sent along wetter weather in its place: it seems the job of the Fixture Secretary never gets any easier.

Saints Alive . . . A man goes to see his doctor with pains in his leg. “My leg hurts something shocking,” he says. The doctor takes his stethoscope,

presses it on the man’s thigh and hears the thigh say, “Doctor,

doctor, lend us eighty quid to pay me phone bill.” The doctor looks

up at the man with a puzzled expression, then places the

stethoscope on his knee and hears the knee say, “Doctor, doctor,

lend us seventy quid to pay me electricity bill.”

The doctor again looks up in silence, then places the stethoscope

on the man’s ankle and hears the ankle say, “Doctor, doctor, lend

us five hundred quid to pay me council tax demand.” The doctor looks up and

smiles. “Well, the problem appears to be self-evident,” he says. “So, what’s up?”

demands the man. “Your leg’s broke in three places,” replies the doctor.

A few days after performing an operation, a surgeon calls at the patient’s

bedside and explains, “I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but when I operated on

you I accidentally left one of my rubber gloves inside your abdomen. We’ll have

to open you up again to get it out.” The patient seems quite unconcerned and

replies, cheerily, “There’s no need to go to all that trouble, doctor. Here’s a

couple of quid – go out and buy yourself a new pair.”

Bob is a very slow worker and finds it difficult to hold down any job, but after a

number of visits to the Job Centre, he is offered a position at the local zoo.

When he arrives for his first day, the head keeper, aware of Bob’s reputation,

assigns him to take care of the tortoise section. Later in the day, the keeper

drops by to see how Bob is getting on, only to find him standing in an empty

enclosure. “Where are the tortoises?” demands the keeper, angrily. “I can’t

believe it,” says Bob. “I just opened the door and ..… whoosh!”

A baby camel turns to his father, who is the middle of eating some delicious

vegetation, and asks, “Daddy, why do we have such big humps?” “Well, Son,”

replies his dad. “They are full of fat to sustain us for long periods out in the

desert.” The baby camel then asks, “Why do we have such long eyelashes?” His

father explains they are to keep the swirling sand out of their eyes. “And why do

we have such large, padded feet?” persists the baby camel, so his father

patiently explains they are to stop them sinking into the soft desert sand.

Hoping he has satisfied the youngster’s curiosity, the father resumes his meal.

“So, Dad,” enquires his son. “What the hell are we all doing in London Zoo?”
