Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Maine Road. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they have had a pleasant trip to visit us here at Brocstedes Park, enjoy their short stay and have a safe journey home after the contest. Since we were last here, for a home game at least we have hosted and visited our landlords in the FA Cup, Extra Preliminary Round. The initial tie last Saturday saw awful weather conditions of rain and swirling winds which were more akin to December than August which hampered the play. The first half was goalless with Athletic having the best of the chances when Richard Livingston hit the post and it was the landlords who took the lead when a familiar face to Town fans Adam Gilchrist netted as the game came alive in the final quarter. A deflected effort from Neil Weaver soon afterwards saw Town draw level but parity was short-lived as Gilchrist added a second and Town looked to be exiting the competition at the first hurdle. The best move of the match was to see Town again level matters as Shaun Judge found Greg Harrison who slalomed through the Ashton defence before finding the tope right hand corner of net to send the tie to a replay. Ironically Tuesday’s performance in the replay was better but we

exited after being wasteful in front of goal. We were creative up to the final third and carved out numerous openings but failed to make them pay and a late goal from the hosts was enough to take them through. It is only a fortnight until we get back into FA Competition action as we enter the FA Vase at the 1st Qualifying Round stage with a trip to Northern Counties East League, Division One Outfit Pontefract Collieries. We will be running a coach which will be leaving from the Rockware Public House on Shaw Street, St Helens at 11.30am and seats are available for the journey priced

at £5. This afternoon’s visitors have had a perfect start to the season in the league having a 100% record so far recording wins over Barnoldswick Town, Runcorn Town, AFC Blackpool, Glossop North End and Bacup & Rossendale Borough, the last two of these matches with a late goal in a pair of 1-0 wins. In between these two 1-0 wins they did however the Road sank to a 3-0 reverse at the hands of Runcorn Linnets in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round. Maine Road have been a bit of a bogey side for Town recently having won the last four contests between the sides and I am sure Ian and the lads will know they are in for a stern test this afternoon as we look to bounce back after the FA Cup exit at the hands of our landlords on Tuesday evening. Finally, let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to victory, your support as always is much appreciate by the lads.

In Town Today . . . Maine Road were formed in 1955 as City Supporters Rusholme, when present club president Frank Thompson and a few friends formed a team and after playing a few friendlies joined the local Rusholme Sunday League. In the late sixties the club changed to the Manchester Amateur Sunday League and also moved it’s headquarters to the newly built Maine Road Social Club and hence the new name Maine Road Football Club was taken. Ronnie Meredith was now running the club and in 1971/72 the club

won the Manchester County Sunday Cup and both the club’s sides won their respective leagues. This prompted Ron to look for a new challenge and he changed the whole future of the club by switching to Saturday football in the shape of the Manchester League. Success followed success on the field and after several years of moving grounds the club settled at their present home Brantingham Road in 1980. After a lean spell one of Ron’s other ambitions was realised in season 1983/84 when the club won the Manchester League Premier Division. This was to be the first or four consecutive Manchester Premier Division Titles for the club. Derek Barber took over the reigns of management in 1986 and the clubs progress continued, so much so that when the Manchester County F.A.’s new complex at Brantingham Road was built, Ron’s other ambition was achieved, entry to the North West Counties Football League. In season 1987/88 Maine Road were successful at Maine Road the then home of Manchester City FC as they beat Irlam Town 1-0 in the final of the Manchester County FA Premier Cup to complete a unique record of winning all five Manchester County FA County cups. The five cups were; Premier Cup (1987/88), Amateur Cup(1972/73, 1997/98 & 2004/05), Sunday Amateur Cup (1971/72), Intermediate Cup (1975/76 & 1976/77) & Challenge Cup (1982/83, 1984/85, 1985/86 & 1986/87). In only their second season in the North West Counties League 1988/89, the club finished 2nd Division runners-up behind champions Vauxhall but were denied promotion on ground grading. The club went one better the next season when they won the Second Division Championship and took what they felt was their rightful place in the League’s top flight. At the end of 2001/02 season after 12 years in the North West Counties League Division One Maine Road were relegated to the Second Division. This was the first time that a Maine Road side had been relegated. Two seasons in Division Two saw a very young and inexperienced side finish in 3rd place and then Runners-up, which lead to the club regaining their place in the top flight. Under the guidance of Chris Simms the club finished 8th in its first season back in the top flight, 2004/5. Town had mixed fortunes against Maine Road that term recording a 2-0 victory at Knowsley Road in February and in the March return Maine Road gained revenge with a 2-1 victory in Joe Gibiliru’s first game in charge. The following season saw a 10th position finish in Simms’ final season in charge. Record appearance holder Ian Walker took up the managerial hot seat and lead the outfit to a club record sixth position finish in his first season in charge (2006/7). 2007/8 saw Walker lead Road to a cup success beating Second Division Bootle on penalties in the Challenge Cup





. . . Maine Road FC Final. On top of this Maine Road ended the season in fourth position, their highest ever league finish. After a difficult early campaign in 2008/9 saw the Manchester outfit unable to build on the previous seasons achievements and they struggled at the wrong end of the table for most of the season before recovering to finish in a respectable 13th position. Those foundations were built upon when in 2009/10 a splendid 6th place position was again attained. Season 2010/11 proved a difficult one as many players left Road to move on to clubs who were prepared to pay them for their efforts. Many young reserve players were therefore brought through perhaps earlier than scheduled for first team duty. They battled manfully and another 13th position was no disgrace. Maine Road have a long and proud reputation for attracting young players to the club. This began with the introduction of a Youth Team run by Derek in the late 1980’s, which brought a succession of fine young players to the club. This success in spotting and nurturing the best young talent has continued over the last decade with Maine Road’s domination of the Umbro International Football Tournament at Under 19 level. Over the last 11 seasons our Under 19’s have taken on and regularly outplayed talented youngsters from around the world. They have won the competition an amazing 6 times and been runners up 3 times. 2011/12 was a difficult season for Road as they had their worst finish, 18th position since returning to the NWCL top flight in 2004/5. Under the new management team of John Morrey and Chris Thomas they more than made amends last term as they secured runners-up spot following an excellent campaign which saw them record 26 league victories and finish just one point behind Champions Padiham.

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park, for this NWCFL Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals Maine Road FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters along with our own followers are treated to an entertaining game. Many thanks to this afternoon’s match and ball sponsors Cheshire Concrete Products, and especially to Jimmy Woodyer a well known former Town player who is a Director at the company. Last Saturday’s FA Cup tie saw the visit of St Helens Mayor Andy Bowden and Windle ward Councillor David Baines (pictured opposite) who came to support us and discuss our plans for a number of events later in the season. The game ended in a 2-2 draw and Tuesday evening’s replay was another tight affair which saw Town dominate the opening 35 minutes before seeing Ashton awarded a penalty - thankfully Ryan Taylor saved the spot-kick and despite a handful of excellent chances our hosts hit the only goal of the game four minutes from time. As a consequence of our exit from the FA Cup we will now play hosts to Alsager Town here at Brocstedes Park next Saturday (31st August). That same afternoon we will draw the winning numbers in our 500 Club Monthly draw - new members are always welcome and it’s just £1 to enter. This afternoon’s visitors Maine Road have continued the form that saw them earn runners-up spot last season and they have had an excellent start to the new league campaign with five victories from five outings although they bowed out of the FA Cup last Saturday going down 0-3 at home to fellow title chasers, Runcorn Linnets. Road are now the only team across the NWCFL two divisions who have a 100% league record - Linnets saw their winning start come to an abrupt end at home to Norton United who ran out 1-5 winners. Another big win came for AFC Liverpool on Tuesday night as they thrashed Wigan RP 0-8 which keeps our neighbours firmly rooted to the bottom of the league table. Next up for Town is a lengthy midweek trip Barnoldswick Town on Tuesday evening, kick off 7.45pm - I am sure the lads will welcome your support. The club will be running a coach to the FA Vase tie at Pontefract Collieries on Saturday 7th September - places will be available to supporters at a cost of £5, please see any committee member for more details or to book your place. Impressive Town open their Account St Helens Town 4-1 Wigan Robin Park Tuesday 13th August 2013

St. Helens Town secured their first win of the season at the expense of neighbours Wigan Robin Park on Tuesday. In an impressive performance, Town emerged 4-1 victors in a contest they dominated for

all but the first ten minutes after the half-time break. Chief architects of the win were striker Paul Cook-Hannah, making his debut after securing international clearance from the League of Wales, and midfield general Lee Chesworth, playing his first game of the season. Cook-Hannah gave an encouraging performance which instilled confidence in his young striking partner Steve Milne, who scored two goals. Equally solid throughout were centre-back Chris Williams, full-back Andrew Mawdsley and midfield pair Cole Ashton and Shaun Judge but overall it was a great team performance. Town opened the scoring after 6 minutes when Mawdsley found himself clear of the Wigan defence and he drew keeper Lever to finish comfortably. Three minutes later, Town stretched their lead after Milne intercepted a back-pass which left Lever stranded and the striker tapped the ball into the empty net. St. Helens continued to tear Robin Park apart and wave after wave of attacks saw Judge fire narrowly wide, Williams head over the bar from a corner and Milne hit the ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy. It was no surprise, therefore, when Connor Sanderson tore through another gaping hole in the visitors’ defence to score Town’s third goal after 39 minutes. In the closing stages of the first half, against the run of play, Robin Park surged forward and a speculative shot hit the far post and went into the net off a Town defender to give the visitors some hope at 3-1. Indeed, they seized the initiative in the early part of the second half, but although several chances fell Wigan’s way, their finishing was poor and Ryan Taylor, making his seasonal bow in the home goal following suspension, had little to do to keep them at bay. Cook-Hannah was a colossus up front and Robin Park’s defence could not cope with the big man. However, reaching the hour mark, and lack of match fitness taking its toll, the centre forward was victim of a heavy tackle and had to leave the field for treatment. Remarkably, he returned immediately and sprinting clear of the defenders, was unlucky with a great shot which just cleared the crossbar. That was to mark the end of his contribution and he was replaced by the experienced Ste Edwards, who himself began to taunt the Robin Park defence. The Wigan side had a brief spell on the attack at this stage, but Taylor pulled off a string of saves to secure the two-goal margin, before Milne set up Edwards but his chance was blocked by a defender on 77 minutes. Milne sealed the victory five minutes from time, beating several defenders before finishing confidently. There was just enough time remaining for one last chance for Edwards, but he hit the woodwork and the whistle blew to confirm St. Helens 4-1 winners.

A Brief History . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last

season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final,

despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which

he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goal scorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and in 2010/11 next to bottom, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up who battled well to avoid relegation. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and having spent over two seasons sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street a new ground share agreement has been brokered with fellow Premier Division side Ashton Athletic to cover their immediate future as plans for a return to St Helens continue.

Hearts and Goals . . . St Helens Town has a new high-profile national charity partner for the 2013/14 season after joining up with Hearts & Goals, a lifesaving campaign for which Fabrice Muamba is ambassador. The club has forged a new partnership with Arrhythmia Alliance, the charity behind Hearts & Goals,a national campaign to tackle the UK’s biggest killer sudden cardiac arrest, by helping communities place lifesaving public-access AEDs (automated external defibrillators).

The campaign’s ambassador, former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the football pitch in March 2012 and went on to make a remarkable recovery thanks to prompt treatment with CPR and an AED. Everyone at the club was so moved by his experiences and the work he and the charity has done through Hearts & Goals, Town want to raise as much money as possible for the campaign by holding a series of fundraising events throughout the season and beyond, as well as dedicating a percentage of all incoming sponsorship deals to the charity. Sudden cardiac arrest claims 100,000 lives in the UK every year and AEDs, like the one used on Fabrice on the pitch at White Hart Lane, increase a person’s chance of surviving from just 5% to 50% if they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. The devices do not require training and can be used by anyone to shock a person’s heart back into its normal rhythm in the event of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Arrhythmia Alliance has already helped communities up and down the UK place public-access AEDs as part of Hearts & Goals. The devices are placed in secure cabinets which are logged with local ambulance services and available to anyone in the community 24/7. In the event of an emergency anyone who phones 999 is then given immediate access to the lifesaving defibrillator. Getting back to Business . . . Well here we go again . . . . . . . The games continue to come thick and fast and the past seven days has seen us take part in two hard fought contests against our landlords Ashton Athletic in the FA Cup. The first last Saturday was a game dominated by Athletic in terrible conditions. Our opponents had the best of a scrappy game and we were lucky to come away with a 2-2 draw. Tuesdays replay on the other hand was a different affair, as a mild summers evening provided a much better spectacle of a game with Town dominating for large periods and although Ashton missed a first half penalty, it was sickening to go out of the FA Cup to a late 85th minute goal. Despite bowing out of the FA Cup, there have been many positives to be taken from Tuesdays performance and today we go again against a top of the table Maine Road in what will no doubt be a difficult game. Away from the pitch, things continue to develop on a commercial front and last weekends visit from St Helens Mayor Andy Bowden allowed for some interesting discussions about developing some high profile events. The Mayor and his charity committee are behind the clubs plans for both a Bert Trautmann Memorial Match against a Manchester City Legends XI, and our End Of Season Charity Dinner, and we will hopefully be able to announce further details of both events in the coming weeks. Its been a good start to the season on the sponsorship front with a number of new sponsors on board including our main sponsor Johnsons Toyota Liverpool, Shirt Sponsors Freebets.co.uk, The Hardwick Group and Fusion 21, Goalkeeping Sponsor The One Glove Company and our Executive Programme Sponsor WheelPro investing in the club and with discussions underway on another potential deal, the future is looking much brighter for the club than in recent years. Town v Ashton Athletic . . . Town fight back to secure a Replay St Helens Town 2-2 Ashton Athletic Saturday 17th August 2013

St. Helens Town had to come back twice against their landlords on Saturday to secure a replay in their FA Cup Extra-Preliminary Round tie, but very nearly lost it at the death. Their chief tormentor was former Town player Adam Gilchrist who came on as a second-half substitute to score both Ashton Athletic goals and the same player had a golden opportunity to win

the tie outright in the last minute, when his header hit the near post from a yard out and rebounded into keeper Ryan Taylor’s grateful hands. The game was spoiled to a great extent by heavy rain and a gusty wind. Ashton Athletic, fielding a clutch of former St. Helens players, settled the better in the first half and, as early as the seventh minute, a poor Town backpass was blasted over the bar by the wasteful Athletic attack. They had another chance after 25 minutes, when a long shot bounced off a Town post, hit a St. Helens defender and went out for a corner. Town’s first effort of any note came on the half-hour. Shaun Judge was hacked down 30 yards out but the same player was wide with the resultant free kick. As Town pressed forward with new confidence, Steve Milne and Paul Cook-Hannah went close then, from a corner, Cook-Hannah and Chris Williams both arrived at the far post, but neither could get in a clear shot and the ball ended up in the side netting. It was Cook-Hannah again who spurned another chance, once more at the far post, from Andrew Mawdsley’s free kick on 38 minutes and it was perhaps Ashton Athletic who were the more grateful to hear the referee’s whistle for the break. The second-half began much as the first had, with the poor weather causing many a slip and mis-timed tackle. Ashton Athletic looked to have benefited from one such chance on 58 minutes, but the ball slid off a forward’s boot and wide of the open goal. The writing was on the wall, however, and Town breathed a sigh of relief as Athletic’s Joe Hull headed wide again. As the second half wore on, Gilchrist made his appearance from the bench and he fired Ashton ahead with a simple shot at the near post following a defensive blunder on 70 minutes. St. Helens fought back and, seven minutes later, another substitute, Neil Weaver, hit an unstoppable shot from the corner of Ashton’s box to equalise at 1-1. Just as Town looked to press forward for another score, Greg Harrison lost his footing, leaving Ashton in the clear and, from the resultant cross, Gilchrist hit his second goal with a powerful drive from 25 yards to put the visitors ahead with just 9 minutes left. Back came St. Helens again and Ste Edwards saw his shot blocked en route for the goal before Harrison, making amends for his slip, surged forward down the touchline, cut inside parallel to the goal-line, drew Ashton keeper Jason Foulds at his near post and shot confidently into the net to tie the scores at 2-2. There was just enough time for Gilchrist’s chance at the other end, but he could not complete his hat-trick and the two sides left the field to prepare for the replay at the same venue on Tuesday and renew the fight for the right to travel to Curzon Ashton in the next round.

Club News . . . St Helens Town Reserves Nick Robinson’s charges have started their West Cheshire League Division Three campaign with three games in six days. Seven points from nine possible has been a great start with and opening victory over Rainhill Town which saw Andy Gillespie hit a hat-trick. Two days later the team travelled to Christleton Reserves (Chester area) and recorded a 0-2 victory with goals from Ryan Johnsons and Dom Whelan. Last Monday evening the Reserves entertained Widnes Vikings Reserves and looked to be on course for their first defeat at the visitors hit two first half goals, an advantage they held until six minutes from time when Dave Hunter reduced the deficit before Steve Powell struck with two minutes remaining to earn his side a point. Next up for the Reserves is a trip to Merseyside Police on Tuesday 27th August, 6.30pm
