Good evening and welcome to Alder Street, home of Atherton Collieries for this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against League leaders New Mills. I hope our visitors had a good journey from Derbyshire to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. This evenings contest should have been our last game at Knowsley Road but due to circumstances beyond our control we have had to change the venue at very short notice to a venue which is becoming very familiar to us this term. Again we are grateful to our friends from Atherton Collieries for coming to our aid and allowing us to host this match here. We come into this game on the back of a well deserved victory against Glossop North End at Surrey Street on Saturday. We raced into an early two goal lead with Daniel Mahoney and Mike Deakin finding the net before the hosts pulled a goal back 35 seconds after the start of the second period. The two goal cushion was restored when Iain Dyson headed home from a Marc Stephens corner before a quick fire goal at either end saw Glossop get it back to 2-3 and Dyson lob the keeper from outside the area to restore the two goal lead. There was still time for what seems like the customary dismissals in Town Vs Glossop encounters this season with Mahoney and Glossop skipper Lugsden receiving their marching orders after an off the ball incident. Whilst we were winning at Glossop a couple of miles down the road this evenings visitors were taking on Conference North outfit Harrogate Town in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup in what was ultimately a losing cause the Millers going down to two first half goals from the visitors, similar to when Town were last at the same stage of the competition a few years ago as Alfreton returned home with the victory that afternoon by the same scoreline. The visitors come into the contest flying high at the top of the table having only dropped two points after drawing with Rossendale United at Church Lane the previous Saturday. Congratulations must go to Dale Newbrook (pictured right) who will be receiving his August, Vodkat League Premier Division Goalkeeper of the Month award before the game this evening. Lets get behind the lads this evening!

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Alder Street for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter with current league leaders New Mills Football Club. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters along with the Town faithful are treated to an entertaining encounter. As most of you will know tonight’s game should have marked our final fixture at Knowsley Road after a decade sharing with our Rugby League hosts. Unfortunately we were informed late last week that should Saints progress to the RL Grand Final (which they did following Friday night’s defeat of Huddersfield Giants) then tonight was earmarked for an evening training session and therefore we would have to make alternative arrangements. We were given the option to play tomorrow evening at Knowsley Road but New Mills were, quite rightly, unable to agree to this as it would have meant possibly fielding a weakened side due to player work commitments. We must say a big thank you once again to Paul Gregory, Colls Chairman, and his committee for accommodating us at short notice. Our new ‘home’ will be Ashton Town and we start at Edge Green Street this Saturday when we entertain Oldham Boro in the FA Vase 1st Round Proper. Tonight’s game will be another tough encounter for Lee Riley’s charges but hopefully confidence will be high following the convincing 2-4 victory at Glossop North End at the weekend. New signing Daniel Mahoney had a great full debut and marked the occasion with our opening goal before being harshly dismissed late on following a clash with NE captain Kelvin Lugsden. Mike Deakin was again on the score sheet and Iain Dyson hit a second half brace to secure the points. New Mills were in FA Cup action as the sole survivors in the competition from the Vodkat League entertaining Harrogate Town of the Blue Square North. Harrogate ran out 2-0 winners courtesy of an own goal and a ‘dodgy’ penalty but New Mills were far from embarrassed by opponents from three divisions higher in the pyramid. New Mills currently lead the way in the Vodkat Premier Division and will be hoping to go one better than last two seasons. Congratulations go to Dale Newbrook who will be presented with his Vodkat ‘Goalkeeper of the Month Award’ this evening and Liam Pearson our own PoM for August (pictured with Commercial Manager Andy Langley) Tonight should see Mark Evans return from suspension while top scorer Liam Pearson will be serving the second game of his two match but will be available again in the Vase on Saturday. In Town Today . . . New Mills AFC, based in the High Peak of Derbyshire, have been at the forefront of organised football in the area for almost 125 years. The Club's home ground, regarded as one of the most picturesque in non-league football, is situated opposite the impressive St George’s Church and has a splendid backdrop of Kinder Scout, which is the highest point in the Peak District National Park. The game of football has been played in the town of New Mills since the early 1880’s, when the club first played in friendlies before joining leagues such as the North Cheshire League and ultimately the Manchester League. In the period up to the First World War the club won almost

everything on offer including the Derbyshire Minor Cup. In 1919, they commenced playing again and dropped the St. Georges from their name. They joined the Manchester league once again and finished top in 1924 and after finishing a runners-up the following season, lifted the championship once again in 1926. New Mills also won the Derbyshire Cup three seasons out of four. The club was extremely well supported and had regular gates of around 3000. Not bad with the town then having a population of 7,500. This was a very successful few seasons for the club and at least half a dozen players moved onto clubs in the Football League. The club played at a number of grounds before they moved to their present home at Church Lane in 1922. In 1959, Joe Martin took charge as manager which started a great run of success for the club. They won the league seven times as well as plenty of trophies before Joe retired in 1972. The club went into the Cheshire League in 1974 but had a lean time whilst members there. They became founder members in 1982 of the North West Counties League being placed in Division Two. Unfortunately, the club began to suffer financially they finished at the foot of the table and in the summer of 1983 ceased playing. Local amateur side Birch Vale and Thornsett FC were looking for a new ground and began playing at Church Lane. Within twelve months they adopted the name of New Mills. The new club began to progress firstly in the Lancashire and Cheshire Leagues’s New Mills rejoined the North West Counties League in 2004 and the first two seasons were ones of consolidation with the club finishing in 9th and then 12th positions. Under the stewardship of Tony Hancock and his assistant Paul Kirkham they are enjoyed halcyon days as 2006/7 saw the club win the Division Two Cup and also just failed to challenge for the title with a fourth placed finish being the reward for a fine season. The 2007/8 season saw more silverware at Church Lane as the Second Division Championship was secured.

. . . New Mills The team broke numerous Club records as they won the Championship by ten points. A great deal of work has also been done on the clubs picturesque ground and the club were optimistic that the 2008/9 season would culminate in promotion to the UniBond League. Although the 2008/09 season saw another trophy triumph, The League Challenge Cup was secured following a win over Runcorn Linnets. New Mills put together a then an unprecedented twenty one game winning run only to be denied promotion to The Unibond League when in the box seat. A final day defeat at AFC Fylde resulted in the team finishing runners up on goal difference. The club also run a reserve side which played its inaugural season in 2009/10 in the Cheshire Building Society Cheshire Football League (formerly known as The Mid Cheshire League) and has now joined the Vodkat League Reserve Division They also run a youth team which plays in The North West Youth Alliance.

Last term saw New Mills finish second in the Premier League for a second season in succession trailing in the wake of Newcastle’s record breaking start to the season. There was also heartbreak in the Vodkat League Challenge Cup as the Millers were disqualified from the competition after winning 3-0 at Abbey Hey in the Quarter Finals for fielding an ineligible player, ironically Abbey Hey then went on to claim the trophy. The end of last term also saw a change in the hot seat at Church Lane with Tony Hancock stepping down being replaced by Ally Pickering. New Mills are many people’s tips for the title this term and their early form has done nothing to dampen this belief the Derbyshire outfit having won eight out of their first nine league outings and were the only Vodkat League club to reach the 2nd qualifying round of the FA Cup, exiting at the hands of Blue Square North side Harrogate Town. St Helens Town bounced back from their midweek woes to win at Surrey Street, extracting revenge for Glossop’s FA Cup win at the same venue just over three weeks ago. The visitors started the game quickly and had amassed a two goal advantage with merely 11 minutes on the clock. Daniel Mahoney who had come off the bench on Tuesday made his first start for the club and was to have a full debut he will never forget. After Mike Deakin’s surging run had been stopped by foul means some 20 yards from goal, Mahoney stepped up to power a free kick past the helpless Jon McIlwaine in the home goal. A couple of minutes later Mahoney turned provider as his ball from the right wing evaded Glossop’s Jason Gorton and was collected by Deakin who showed great composure to control the cross before firing home to double the lead. Matters could have got worse still for the hosts on 18 minutes when John Elias found Mahoney with a cross field ball before the latter played the ball perfectly into Iain Dyson’s path 1on1 with the goalkeeper, he looked certain to score by McIlwaine made a good save at his feet. Another chance for the visitors went begging just before the half hour mark when a Marc Stephens corner from the right was met by Luke Faulkner whose header beat the keeper but went just over the bar. With half an hour on the clock Glossop threatened for the first time and it took an excellent save from the previously unemployed Dale Newbrook to keep them off the scoresheet. Garry Kharas was found by a left wing cross and his glancing header looked to be finding the net but for the sharp reflexes of the Town stopper. Before the interval Stephens and Deakin both had chances to add to the lead but the former shot wide of the target and the latter was denied by a good block from Alex Elliott, so the visitors went into the interval with a two goal cushion. Town had the worst possible start to the second period as Glossop netted 35 seconds after the restart. A cross from the left found its way to the far post when Kharas met it to tap home and half the deficit. Good work from Elliott who cut inside from the right wing and unleashed an effort drew another good stop from Newbrook during a spell of Glossop pressure. Mahoney almost restored the two goal lead from a corner after an hour as the loose ball from a corner broke to him and his exquisite piece of skill saw McIlwaine have to claw the effort off target. At the other end Steven Heaton spurned a great chance to level matters after he created an opening on the edge of the area but he shot over the bar. A corner from Stephens on the right after 69 minutes was sent into the box and the intelligent run of Dyson saw him get in front of his marker and his glancing header was enough to direct the ball into the far corner for the visitors’ third goal. The joy was to be short lived as on 73 minutes Kharas met a left wing cross to head home the hosts and indeed his second of the game. Almost instantaneously Town netted at the other end as Mahoney pressed an error from Heaton and fed Dyson whose first time shot lofted over the keeper and into the net. There was still time for controversy as Mahoney and Kelvin Lugsden were both sent off for an off the ball incident, red card numbers four and five in the three contests between these two sides this season and some rather erratic decisions from the officials which thankfully at this stage did not have a large bearing on the contest. In the closing stages Mike Kavanagh sent a cross into the box which found Stephens and he looked certain to add a fifth for Town but his header was claimed by McIlwaine at the third attempt. Town will be looking to take this excellent for into the midweek contest with league leaders New Mills.

St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town Football Club 1946 - present

The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside

area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at

. . . A Brief History Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann (pictured right), who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago last season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes (pictured right below) was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil (pictured opposite), who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone.

The close season saw Bickerstaffe step down and Lee Riley promoted to manager. A number of new faces have joined the club and this combination of youth and experience will be looking to improve on last season’s impressive ninth position and success in the cup competitions. The Knowsley Road ground is being demolished this autumn, necessitating a temporary move to Ashton Town, but August 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club.

Steve Prescott’s Engage Mutual Challenge

The Steve Prescott Foundation is delighted to announce its next amazing challenge - five marathons in five days ahead of this year’s Engage Super League Grand Final. Of these five marathons, Steve Prescott himself will run four in four days, with the fifth marathon being opened up to fans on the day of the final. The inspirational Steve Prescott MBE, is keen to add this challenge to an already impressive portfolio of physical feats and hopes that fans will get behind his latest fundraising endeavours. “Keep on Running: Steve Prescott’s Engage Mutual Challenge” will begin on the morning of Tuesday 28th September at the KC Stadium in Hull, The Foundation are hoping friends and fans will run alongside Steve as he embarks upon the 104 mile route to Manchester’s Old Trafford. This epic challenge aims to raise a significant amount of funds for The Foundation Steve set up back in 2007, benefiting two charities close to his heart; The Christie Hospital in Manchester, where he receives treatment for a rare cancer, and the Try Assist Fund which supports those seriously injured whilst playing rugby league.

Following his ultra marathon, Steve is challenging rugby league fans to run a collective 26 miles of their own in the Grand Final Fanzone at Old Trafford. Engage Mutual will be hosting this fifth marathon in their Health & Fitness area on Saturday 2nd October, where a treadmill will be in place for fans to run a sponsored leg of the final marathon. To be involved, participants need to sign up on the SPF website, www.steveprescottfoundation.co.uk. Spaces are limited, but there are other ways to show support for the event, either by cheering the various runners on before they head to their seats for the Engage Super League season finale, or by making a donation. Win a Brand New Toyota Aygo with St Helens Town . . .

St Helens Town have launched a brand new sponsorship package for the 2010-11 season which will see one lucky participant drive away a brand new Toyota Aygo worth almost £9000. The package forms part of the club’s main sponsorship deal with Bootle based car dealership Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have donated the car and who will be assisting the club in promoting the event across the region. In addition to raising funds for the senior and junior St Helens Town teams the

sponsorship project will be supporting local charity The Steve Prescott Foundation who will receive 50% of all profits. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the club’s profile as well as some much need funds for the whole club and The Steve Prescott Foundation. We are extremely grateful to Johnsons Toyota Liverpool for their generous support and hopefully the public and business community will get behind the project.’ He added, ‘The Foundation is very well know across the region and has been successful in raising a huge amount of money across a number of activities, many of the sport related, and we thought the Town’s football club should do its bit!’ ‘Steve Prescott is best known for his Rugby League exploits with St Helens, Hull, Wakefield, Ireland and as a GB Lions tourist; but there is a football connection as his son played for the St Helens Town Juniors U8s last season and has recently been signed by Liverpool FC.’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons said, ‘Our partnership with St Helens Town continues to develop and this season we have become the club’s main sponsor. Dale Newbrook: Signed at the start of the 2010-11 season as cover from Kevin Woods but has already made the number one jersey his own. Played against Town for West Didsbury and Chorlton FC in a pre-season friendly fixture. A great shot stopper who commands his area extremely well. Vodkat League Premier Division 'Goalkeeper of the Month' for August 2010 Kevin Woods: Very good young goalkeeper who is now in his third season with the club. Last season he battled for the keeper's jersey with Graeme McCall and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Stephen Ben Kay: Another player starting his second season with the club after signing from Wigan Robin Park. Can play centre back or midfield and has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. The 2009-10 Players Player of the Year and rewarded with the captaincy for season 2010-11. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club in 2008-09 season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. John will be looking to improve his disciplinary record. Iain Dyson: Former Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club's top goalscorer last term for the third time in four seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Luke Faulkner: Twenty two year old central defender who joined the club last season from Mid-Cheshire outfit Garswood United. Has composure beyond his years which has been evident across a number of excellent performances for club. Definitely one to watch!

Town Pen Pictures . . . Liam Pearson: Joined in the summer from Ford Motors, a prolific goal scorer in the Liverpool County Premier League. A big strong centre forward who is good in the air and with the ball at his feet and he will prove to be a handful for opposition defenders. Paul Cliff: Another young player who joined during the close season from neighbours Prescot Cables where he was a regular in their Unibond side. Paul plays on the left wing and has an eye for goal as his pre-season games showed. Marc Stephens: Young midfield player who has had a fine couple of seasons at Town. Signed in the summer of 2008 he came into his own when moved into central midfield where his movement and passing ability are a real quality. He has had a excellent start to the 2010-11 season with goals being added to his repertoire! Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club last season. After some early substitute appearances he's now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who's good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Mark Evans: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club last season after spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR and Wigan Robin Park. Liam Arnold: A new signing from local outfit Windle Labour FC where he was top scorer in the Warrington Premier Division in season 2009-10. Good pace and creativity have been a highlight of his early season form for Town Lee Owens: A strong and deceptively agile central defender who joined from Prescot Cables during the summer 2010. Mike Fargher: Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defenders and beat them before

sending quality crosses into the box. The 2009-10 Young Player of the Year. Karl Aldridge: Right sided defender or midfield player who is another of the crop of summer signings. Now a regular following a pre-season shoulder injury which kept him out of the team’s opening games of the season. Brian Hatton: The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. He has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian spent much of last season recovering from injury. Former Stockport and Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Dave Garnell: Tall and strong central defender who also has an eye for goal. A great presence in both penalty boxes, signed this summer from Prescot Cables. Ray Gore: Another player who joined the Town ranks in the summer of 2010 and slotted striaght in at right back where his defensive and attacking skills have caught the eye.

Daley Woods: A speedy front man who has a great first touch and an eye for the spectacular goal. Joined the club during the close season 2010 from Prescot Cables. Phil Mitchell: Joined Town from Warrington two seasons ago for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Lee Riley: Joined the club two seasons ago as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition to the club, stepping up to become manager this season. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables and also had a playing spell with Town. Phil Burton: Joined the club during the close season as Assistant Manager to Lee Riley having been manager of the Prescot Cables Reserves. A well qualified coach who has had previous playing spells with Whiston Cross, Prescot Cables and Altrincham

New Mills in the FA Cup . . . New Mills tasted defeat for the first time this season at Church Lane on Saturday but were far from disgraced as they bowed out of The FA Cup to Blue Square Conference North side Harrogate Town. The visitors, who are three divisions and fifty odd places above The Millers in the non-league pyramid, threw their weight about in the early exchanges as they tried to contain the attacking threat caused by Dave Swarbrick’s pace and trickery down the right wing. However, the Yorkshiremen looked dangerous going forward and a spectacular overhead scissors kick from Liam Hardy's went narrowly wide just before they did take the lead in the eleventh minute. Wayne Phillips’s caught The Millers on the counter attack and his cross from the left hand side was heading towards the unmarked Hardy in the box before Mark Innes, trying desperately to prevent the ball from reaching its intended target, unfortunately could only turn the cross past his own goalkeeper Dominic Ingram-Hughes. New Mills’s goal then somehow escaped as a mad scramble took place virtually on the goal-line with shots reigning in from all angles before the ball was eventually hacked clear. The home side were giving as good as they got though in the midfield areas and Carlos Meakin’s deflected shot started a run of successive corners which were well defended by the strong and physical Harrogate defence. The major talking point in the game occurred nine minutes before the interval when the visitors were awarded a penalty. Referee Mr Hutchinson deemed Micky Bowler’s tackle on Liam Hardy to be an illegal one despite the New Mills full back appearing to win the ball cleanly. This was backed up by the official after the game who agreed that the defender had won the ball initially but had subsequently brought down the attacking player with his trailing leg. No matter what was said, the spot kick had been awarded and was duly dispatched by Graeme Armstrong with a minimum of fuss. Armstrong was only denied by an excellent save by Dominic Ingram-Hughes at the start of the second half but The Millers really rolled up their sleeves and fought tooth and nail with their supposed superior opponents to try and get themselves back in the game. Adam Mather who had an outstanding game at left back, hit the top of the crossbar and this was followed almost immediately by Luke Horrocks’s shot flying just wide of Kieran Gonzalez’s upright. The home side were enjoying their best spell of the game at this point as they enjoyed the lion’s share of territorial possession and Church Lane’s biggest crowd this season would have witnessed a grandstand finish if the off balance Leon Grandison had not spurned probably their best chance of the game with twenty five minutes of the game remaining. The ultimate difference between the two sides on the day was Harrogate having an extra half a yard of pace and that extra bit of strength you would expect their players to have with them playing at such a high standard of non-league football. Their defence showed their experience too as they successfully blocked substitute Josh Ford’s late shot and then with keeper Gonzalez denying fellow replacement Adam Morning. The crowd showed their appreciation to both sets of players at the conclusion of the game as it had been an excellent Cup tie. New Mills more than held their own against their higher ranked opponents and can be proud of their efforts in the competition this season which had seen them reach the previously uncharted territory of The Second Qualifying Round. Witton Sign Maguire Witton Albion manager Paul Ogden has secured the signature of Danny Maguire from npower League Two side Crewe Alexandra on a non-contract basis. The 21-year-old midfielder is looking to resurrect his career after sustaining a knee injury that curtailed his future at his former club Queens Park Rangers, where he was a member of their youth team.

The 6-foot tall Maguire made an impressive start to his Crewe career in their 5-0 pre-season win over Nantwich Town, and manager Ogden will be including him in the squad for Saturday`s home fixture against Ossett Albion, as he looks to get some time in on the pitch and get back to full match fitness. Meanwhile, the club have allowed Christian Millar to join First Division One South side Leek Town.

Around The Grounds Delta Taxi Stadium - Bootle

A relatively short trip saw us take in Bootle’s new ground with the commercial sounding name. The ground naming rights and indeed club sponsorship package was signed last season of a multi year, five figure sum which at our level is not to be sniffed at. The location of the ground is on an industrial estate on the site of a former chicken factory and the site is quite large with plenty of room for development. The ground itself has changed quite a lot since our first visit in April at the end of last season. The

ground now resembles a building site with a stand that was behind one of the goals last season having moved up the clubhouse touchline and the site of its previous location now being inaccessible due to building works. The nearside touchline on which the turnstile is located houses all of the facilities in the ground with the main stand housing all the seating and the stand mentioned above being on this side of the pitch. The clubhouse building which houses the facilities you would expect including the changing rooms and committee room. The clubhouse is similar in style to Skelmersdale but a little bit smaller and is a well equipped bar. The ongoing building work at the ground includes work behind one of the goals to install banked terracing and what looks like the start of works on installing a floodlit Astroturf pitch on the far side of the ground which will add to the present facilities.

All Our Yesterdays . . . Having now played our last fixture at Knowsley Road, it is opportune to look back on the various grounds used by the club. The original St. Helens Town played their home games on the Primrose Ground, Park Road. The ground was used in later years as a greyhound track and survived until the 1980s, when it was demolished and replaced with Social Services facilities and re-named Mulcrow Close. The headquarters of the club were the Black Horse Hotel, Park Road, until the club closed down in 1928. When the club was re-formed after the Second World War, its patrons purchased the site of the former Sutton Cricket Club, later used as allotments, at Hoghton Road, Sutton, adjacent to the St. Helens Junction railway station. The headquarters were, for a time, the Junction Inn, which still stands. The club used what became known as the Town Ground from 1947 until 2000, when title was transferred to Sporting Club St. Helens Limited, the organisation which became the parent company of St. Helens Rugby Football Club Limited and St. Helens Town Limited. The ground was eventually sold for

housing and the substantial sale proceeds were placed at the disposal of Sporting Club St. Helens and put towards the acquisition and building costs of the new St. Helens stadium, which is currently taking shape on the Link Road and which is due for completion in around 12 months’ time. During the intervening period, of course, Town will share Ashton Town’s facilities at Edge Green Street, whilst the Saints will groundshare at Widnes. Town’s ground at Hoghton Road opened for Liverpool County Combination Football on 30th August 1947 when around 2000 spectators saw Town and Newton

YMCA fight out a 1-1 draw. The following season, on 9th October 1948, a ground record of 3012 witnessed the game with Burscough, although a larger crowd assembled for the friendly with Manchester City in April 1950, generally quoted at 4000. The Hoghton Road ground was built from scratch, first of all was the erection of the pavilion. By November 1949, with Town in the Lancashire Combination, the ground had seated accommodation for 250 and cover for over 1300 standing spectators and a small clubhouse was built in 1958, incorporating an office and dressing-rooms. A social club with room for 200 customers appeared in 1962, extended twice to accommodate over 700 by 1977 and floodlights were installed in 1988, following Town’s success in the FA Vase Final at Wembley in 1987. . . . Town Grounds 1946 - the lights on 25th October 1988. Between 1990 and 1994, Town shared the ground with Runcorn Highfield (later Highfield) Rugby League club. Town’s last match at Hoghton Road was against Vauxhall Motors on 29th April 2000. In November 1952, Town moved their operation to City Road, which they shared with Pilkingtons Recreation. City Road was the former ground of St. Helens Recs. Rugby League Club and the ground had previously been used for football when the Recs. fielded an association side between 1898 and 1913. Recs. Rugby League ran from 1913 as an amateur club and between the Wars, they played as a professional club in the

Northern Union and Rugby Football League, often more successfully than Saints. The parent club pulled the funding at the end of the 1938/39 season and the ground was unused during the War. Town played there before some encouraging crowds before re-locating to Hoghton Road in October 1953. Town’s first game at City Road was a Liverpool Senior Cup tie against Stonycroft (which Town won 8-1) on 29th November 1952 and the final game was a 4-0 league win against Prescot Cables on 10th October 1953. Knowsley Road has been used for North West Counties Football for the last 10 seasons. The first game was against Skelmersdale United on 23rd August 2000, the final game being the FA Cup Preliminary Round tie against Glossop North End on 28th August 2010. On occasions when the stadium has not been available, Town have used various other local grounds, notably Prescot Cables for league games and holding some friendly games at Ashton Town and Bobbies Lane, Eccleston. In recent weeks, two FA Vase matches have been played at tonight’s venue, Alder House, the home of Atherton Collieries. The record crowd at Knowsley Road was the 1723 attendance for the visit of FC United of Manchester on 12th August 2006. GLYN JONES

Vodkat League News New Manager at Atherton LR

Atherton LR FC is delighted to announce the appointment of Glenn Moses as First Team Manager. Glenn has been with the club for the past three seasons as Head Coach and Assistant Manager. He has experience and knowledge of the Vodkat League and is able to bring fresh ideas with him. We are sure Glenn will prove to be a great manager and look forward to the remaining season and the ones ahead. We are also very pleased to report that all the backroom staff are staying with Glenn and Atherton LR would like to thank them all for their loyalty and commitment they have shown over the past few seasons, and especially over the past few weeks.

Steve returns to The Old Boys

Leek CSOB have welcomed back former player and Club Captain Steve Callear, who has returned to the Club to join Brett Barlow as part of the Club's Manage-ment Team. Steve was a player for the Old Boys from the 1988/89 season, and after starting out in the Youth Section, he became a regular first team player almost from the time

he came out of Dave Lacey's youth side. He soon made his mark in the Senior side and was soon followed by two other talented players from the youth set up, Gary Bentley and John Banks. Callear became the Club Captain and served the Old Boys for some years, leading teams to victory in the Leek Cup, Sentinel Cup (1993/94), and the Sentinel Shield in 1991. Old Boys Secretary Stan Lockett said: "The Club is so pleased that Steve has returned, and one feels sure it will be a long and fruitful association." Steve is pictured below with Manager Brett Barlow before last Saturday's match against Ashton Town.

A young female stockbroker decides to trade in her BMW for a sportier model, so she buys a Porsche convertible. As she’s driving along the country lanes with her long hair blowing in the wind and the radio blasting out, the engine starts to splutter and then dies. She climbs out and peers under the bonnet but has no idea what she’s looking for, so she calls the AA who are soon on the scene. “Now, what’s the trouble?” asks the AA man. “Well, it just stopped,” replies the woman. The guy gets to work, and the engine is soon purring away. “Thank goodness,” she says. “Is there something I can do to prevent it happening again?” “Not particularly,” replies the AA man. “Just crap in the carburettor.” A look of abject horror

crosses her face. “And how often do I have to do that?” she asks. Two hunters are dragging a dead deer back to their truck when a third hunter appears, also dragging a deer. “It’s much easier if you drag it the other way,” advises the lone hunter. “The antlers won’t dig into the ground.” When he has gone, the two hunters start dragging their deer the other way. After a while, one comments, “This is better, isn’t it?” “I’m not convinced,” replies the other. “Aren’t we getting further away from the truck?” A man is walking down the street with a computer under one arm, a photocopier under the other, various filing trays hanging from the belt round his waist, and a desk strapped to his back. A policeman stops him and announces, “I’m placing you under arrest.” “Whatever for?” asks the man. “For impersonating an office, sir,” replies the policeman. If you’re going to take up cross-country skiing, it’s best if you start with a small country. A woman and her lover are in bed one afternoon when her husband unexpectedly arrives home from work. The woman pushes her lover into a corner of the bedroom and showers him in talcum powder. “Stand still and pretend you’re a statue,” she pleads. When the husband enters the bedroom, he asks his wife about the new ornament. She explains that the Jones family recently acquired a statue and she wanted one too. Before the lover can escape, the couple retire to bed. At midnight the husband gets up and goes to the kitchen. He returns with a glass of water and some biscuits, hands them to the statue and says, “Here you go - I stood like that for three days at the Jones’s and they never fed me once.” Compiled and edited by John Shepherd (Sheffield FC) with cartoon by Paula Shepherd.
