COLLABORATIVE NEWS
ST. JOHN-ST. PAUL
SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
In today's Gospel, when Jesus asks "which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers' victim?" the scholar of the law answered, "the one who treated him with mercy." Jesus then
said, "Go and do likewise." This week you can also "treat the poor with mercy" by putting a gift in the St. Vincent de Paul donation box. The SVDP donation boxes are located in the foyers of each church . Please help those in need.
The next meeting of the St. John - St. Paul Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be held on Thursday, July 18 at 6:45 pm at St. Paul Parish Hall.
All are welcome!
SUMMER EVENING

LOTS: LIVES OF THE SAINTS
St. Martha Martha, born in the village of Bethany near Jerusalem during the first century and the sister to Mary and Lazarus, was the oldest of her siblings. She was a take-charge, by-the-book older sister accustomed to leading and running the household. One of the most famous stories from Scripture about her is in Luke, where Martha is busy hosting a gathering and rushing around the house serving Jesus and other guests. She said to Jesus, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” Jesus replied, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” In another story, upon learning that Jesus is arriving after hearing the news about Lazarus death, Martha is the first to run out to meet Jesus whereupon she says, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Jesus responded, “Your brother will rise.” Over the years, Martha has come to be the example or model of the “activist” Christian, and Mary is the architype of contemplation. After Jesus died, Martha, along with Mary and Lazarus, moved to France and led a life of holiness and evangelization. Saint Martha’s feast day is July 29.

SUMMER BLAST WAS A BLAST!
Once school was released, our rising sixth graders (all 67 of
them!) joined the St. John St. Paul Collaborative staff to “blast
through” a curriculum of Old Testament stories, discussions
about respect, values, and morality. To make this event
enjoyable, college students and high school students created
games and fun for the kids. It was truly a Blast!
