CLASSROOM UPDATES Grade 4 In Reading, we will continue to explore fictional and non-fictional forms of text while making connections to them, and drawing inferences using explicit and implicit text clues. In Writing, we will continue to build upon our sentence and paragraph structures, fur-ther revise and edit polished works, and incorporate new vocabulary to enrich our writing. In Math, we will begin using protractors to measure and identify acute, right, straight, and obtuse angles. Transformational Geometry, in particular flips, slides and turns, as well as coordinates, will be explored. The mathemati-cal probability of events/occurrences will wrap up our second look at Data Management and Probability. In Science, the class will begin its second last unit on Gears and Pulleys, and how simple machines allow for a mechanical advantage that would significantly lessen the human effort required to lift, push or pull an ob-ject. Our second and final Social Studies Unit, An-cient Civilizations, will provide students the opportuni-ty to broaden their understanding of the evolution of law and society through the ages. Grades 5 and 6 In the second term, your child will be learning about many new and interesting topics. In Science, we are part way through our unit on Diversity of Living Things (Grade 6) and Properties of and Changes in Matter (Grade 5). Next month we will begin our second units in Social Studies for both grades. In Math, the Grade 5 and 6 students have completed their 2D Geometry unit and are now working on 3D Geometry and 3D Measurement (Grade 5 - area of polygons and Grade 6 - surface area, volume, creating isometric sketches). In Family Life, both the Grade 5 and 6 students will be beginning Theme 3 (Created Sexual Male and Fe-male). Look out for a letter outlining the material that will be covered to be sent home with your child in the first week of April. In Language, the Grade 6 stu-dents will be preparing for the upcoming EQAO test, by focusing on how to respond to a variety of text-related questions, while the Grade 5 students will work on a Literature Circle group. For an in depth look at the curriculum go to http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/elementary/ French Grade 3/4 class is exploring vocabulary based on the theme of weather, learning to discuss different weather patterns in French, related clothing vocabu-lary and the 4 seasons. Grade 5s are expanding their knowledge of various francophone communities within Canada. These studies will culminate with researching, and presenting to their peers, a community of their choice. Grade 7s are studying about health and well-ness and will be working towards creating an action plan which will contribute to their own personal goals regarding health and physical fitness. Grade 8s are finishing up their unit of study on the francophone world with presentations based on their visit to a French speaking country of their choice. The remain-ing months will focus on various prominent French his-torical figures and their many contributions to society.
