From Father Mike’s Desk

We've come to the end of October? How is this possible? And in two months it'll be 2020, a fifth of the way through the century? Amazing....

As time roars by, the eternal awaits. And this week, we have powerful reminders. First, on Tuesday evening in the church, Father Steve Mattson will share his insights into the deep healing offered by and through or Savior, Jesus Christ. You're hearing him preach this weekend, and he'll have much more to give us in a couple nights, on Tuesday.

Thursday evening is the Vigil of All Saints Day. All Hallows Eve. Halloween. And Friday is All Saints Day, when we remember all the holy men and women who have gone before us -- the Church Triumphant. The great saints whose names come down to us through long ages were chosen by God to bear particular witness through their heroic virtue. But far more numerous are those whose faithfulness was known only to family members and others whose lives directly intersected. Among this "Great Cloud of Witnesses" (Hebrews 12:1) are the family elders, teachers, mentors, and others who kept us on the right track.

This Friday feast, a Holy Day of Obligation, has our usual holyday schedule: 6:00 p.m. on Thursday; then 7:00 and 8:30 a.m., and 6:00 p.m., on Friday.

Then Saturday, at 11:00 a.m., is our annual All Souls Day Mass of Remembrance. Please come and pray for the souls in Purgatory. And please come and pray for the deceased men and women whom we particularly remember for the way they touched the lives of our parishioners.

The Mass of Remembrance is part of the well organized and deeply compassionate grief ministry offered by our parishioners. Please call the parish office if anyone in your family or circle of acquaintances is struggling with a loss. Our parish program is open to anyone of any faith, or of no faith, yet it remains unapologetically grounded in the love of Christ.

Death is part of life. Heaven and Hell are real. Death comes to every family and, in God's good time, to each one of us. God loves us more than we can ever imagine. As we wrestle with these eternal verities, we need each other's prayers and support. Come pray with us late this week. Give thanks for the blessed ones who've gone ahead of us, and pray for those of that holy company who are still making their way back to the Lord.

Then, next Saturday night, come the Huntington Club at the Stadium. Come celebrate all that our parishioners have accomplished in recent years, and come join in supporting the continued progress that lies ahead!

May God bless you!

V. 32 No. 43 October 26/27, 2019 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Sister Anita’s Corner Thank you God for families … for families joining together to give their thanks … for seed and soil and care of Earth … and harvest … to be enjoyed … to be shared.

How grace-filled and gracious it is to set aside this time of the year to recognize our bounty and let our hearts be filled with gratitude.

Ever-living God, strengthen our faith … our hope … our living love. There is no power for good which does not come from your covenant, no promise to hope in that love has not offered. May we do with loving hearts what you ask of us and come to share in the life you promise.

We bring before our loving God our petitions, our actions, our prayer for others. Not to exalt ourselves, for what would that really benefit us or anyone? It is not how much we give or do but what we nurture in our hearts as we are involved in putting before the Lord our petitions - which are moments of expansive embrace and inclusive looking around beyond ourselves. It is what moves in our hearts as we give, holding our unseen neighbor in our giving … this is for you … just a bit of care and concern.

We are beginning our time of donating food for our near neighbor. We will collect, package and deliver food as our Thanksgiving project and then we will collect again for our December Christmas project, from Saint Martha hands and hearts to others. As you shop and bring your boxes and canned goods to the church, let your heart hold our neighbors in your prayer thoughts. As you explain to your children what we are doing, may you dinner table prayer include praying for those in need that they may have something for their family and themselves along with the blessing of somebody cares about them. As you become aware of date of when we will be sorting and packing the boxes, build it into your November and then December calendars time to be the hands and feet of Jesus to others.

Care for our Earth … care for each other:

** Consider putting your groceries for yourself and for donating into reusable cloth or plastic bags. The reusable bags will be part of our donation.

** Consider the kinds of food that you donate and help your neighbors have a share in the healthy harvest which we all want.

May our light shine with gratitude for our many blessings.

A Special Thank you to all of the Volunteers at Saint Martha Parish Because of some guideline changes that the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops have made over the last couple of years, all adults who volunteer where children are present need to complete the following three things. These requirements are not meant to single out adults or cause due hardship on our volunteers, they are meant to give all of us the knowledge needed to keep our children and vulnerable adults safe while attending or volunteering for events sponsored by their home Church.

1. All adults need to attend either a live session or an online session of Called to Protect. You must register for these classes at www.virtus.org. The next live session here at Saint Martha will be NEXT Thursday, November 7 at 6 pm in our Blessed Solanus Conference Room.

2. When you sign up to create an account at the Virtus website (above), you will be asked to sign a Diocese of Lansing Code of Conduct. This is very simple and lets everyone know that our volunteers are good honest adults who are here to help make Saint Martha a better place.

3. You will also need to fill out consent form that will allow our Saint Martha staff to run an ICHAT background check. The results are confidential and kept here at Saint Martha in a locked location. You can download the forms at Dioceseoflansing.org or get them from Jackie Rosalez at [email protected].

We really do value our volunteers, but we also cherish our children and vulnerable adults and strive to make Saint Martha a safe and happy home for them. For more information, please contact Jackie and I will be very happy to help you.

Sister Cheryl Ann Grenier went home to our loving God on Sunday, October 13, 2019 after battling cancer for many years. She was part of the four founding Sisters of Charity (Sisters

Marie Pauline, Pat, Anita and herself) to open and staff Saint Martha School where she ministered from 1993 through 2002. One of her beautiful contributions to Saint Martha, and to so many other places, was her gift of music through her singing, playing the guitar, and teaching music to so many school children, and providing wonderful Christmas and Spring concerts during her 9 year stay. As she battled over various years her cancer, she moved to our Sister of Charity motherhouse in Cincinnati. In 2015, she greatly desired to celebrate her Jubilee - 50 years as a Sister of Charity - with her SC family and her own family. Then as a couple of years went by, she hoped to celebrate her 70th birthday with lots of singing and dancing, which she was able to do. Loving music, she ministered to our elderly sisters in our nursing home, and it was one of her dearest ways of praying - sometimes almost loosing herself in the depths of a song such as, Shepherd me O God beyond my wants, beyond my fears … Sister Cheryl Ann was 72, with 54 years as a Sisters of Charity. Upper Left: she is pictured at her Jubilee with Sisters Marie Pauline and Anita.

We are collecting non-perishable food to help make Thanksgiving brighter for 25 seniors in our area. There are bags at the entrances of the

church or use your own reusable bags for items such as: soup, cereal, canned meat and fish, pasta, macaroni, gravy, instant potatoes, stuffing, and canned fruits and vegetables. Please consider low sodium, sugar, fat; whole grain; etc. It is helpful it you check the expiration dates as well. Smaller packages are preferred as the boxes are for individuals. Cash donations are welcome to go toward other items that we purchase for the baskets; put your cash donations in an envelope marked Thanksgiving collection. Your thoughtful contributions mean so much to struggling seniors in our area, and we thank you for your generosity in these difficult times! Working together as a parish family, we need people to sort, pack, and deliver the food boxes. The work date (to be set) will be the Saturday or Sunday before Thanksgiving (November 23/24).

Continues: Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm until Tuesday, December 10 in our Blessed Solanus Conference

Room. We know it hurts, and we want to help: help and encouragement after the death of a spouse, child, family member or friend. GriefShare is a special weekly seminar and support group designed to help you rebuild your life after the death of a loved one. Our group is led by caring people who have all experienced grief and want to help you get through the difficult days ahead. Healing is the Path to Freedom and Peace with Father Steve Mattson

THIS Tuesday, October 29 at 7 pm in our Church

All are encouraged to join us for this evening of recollection when he will focus on the essential mission and

ministry of Jesus, which was healing the whole person. Based on his experience with the John Paul II Healing Center in Florida, he will describe the process of interior healing, which is freedom, joy, and peace. If we’re honest, most of us admit that we’ve figured out ways to believe and to behave that help us navigate the challenges of this life, even if there is often moral and relational wreckage along the way (in our own lives, those of our friends and families, and in the world). Most of us have resigned ourselves to the fact that life just is difficult, painful, and disappointing - even life in Christ! We have heard that is should be better, but our experience is stubbornly opposed to the promises we read in the scriptures. Indeed, the Bible makes great promises and claims. What are we to make of Saint Paul’s statement in Galatians 5:1, “For freedom Christ set us free.”? Can it be true? In John 10:10, Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it more abundantly”. Do we believe that? Can we? Could it possibly be true? Yes! If this seems like wishful thinking or smoke and mirrors, then the Lord longs for us to encounter the living, healing, love of God.

Continues from 7 am to 7 pm through THIS Wednesday, October 30 in Frandor, on the grassy area on the west side of Clippert north of Vine Street. Join other prayer warriors for an hourly

Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet after the 3 pm Rosary, with Saint Martha leaders at 10 and 11 am, Noon, and 2 and 3 pm. Please join us on this final day to peacefully pray for the protection of all LIFE, especially the unborn and mothers who struggle.

All Souls Day Mass of Remembrance

NEXT Saturday, November 2 at 11 am During the month of November, we remember in prayer our loved ones who have died, particularly this past year. We invite all parishioners and their family members and friends, to join us for this special Mass of Remembrance, when many of our deceased loved ones will be prayed for by name. Scripture reminds us of the promise of the resurrection; may we be a faith community that remembers our beloved dead, prays for them, and comforts the brokenhearted.

need good leaders in this ministry! Did you know that servers have one of the most important jobs at Mass? They are there to assist the Priest, which means that we really need them!! You may have noticed at Mass that often we do not have enough Servers - and sometimes don’t have any! Those that are serving love it, but are required to serve far too often. We need help! Parents, please encourage your children to become Altar Servers! They will enjoy being active during Mass and you will enjoy the fact that they are learning so much about why we do what we do at Mass. If your child is interested and this date does not work for you, please contact Jackie to set up another time.
