The Conversation on Caring for Creation Continues
The Dynamics of Ecological Conversion
Pope Francis invites us to conversion saying: “many things have to change course, but it is we human beings above all who need to change.” The state of our common home calls us to a “profound interior conversion… whereby the effects of our encounter with Jesus Christ become evident in our relationship with the world around us”. It is not just a matter of awareness or changing our minds, but a shift at the level of the heart and will, that results in changed action. To achieve reconciliation with creation, “we must examine our lives and acknowledge the ways in which we have harmed God’s creation through our actions and our failure to act. We need to experience a conversion, or change of heart”. Lament, repentance, the effort to repair damage. The call to care for creation goes to the heart of what it means to be human before God and in the world. It requires a profound conversion expressed in new ways of living, both personally and collectively. What seeds of change can we water today? done, and the transformation of behaviour – these are elements of a process of conversion. Such an ecological conversion calls us to a renewed way of understanding the cosmos and humanity – a new vision of what it is to be a human being before God and in the world. It calls us to a new spirituality, or way of understanding and expressing our relationship with the Divine in our lives. To bring about lasting change, it must also be a “community conversion”. We are being called to a new way of thinking, feeling, understanding, and living.
Economic Conversion and the ‘Economy of Francesco’ By calling us to a humbler, more sustainable way of living, our ecological conversion entails an economic conversion. Pope Francis advocates a: “… circular model of production capable of preserving resources for present and future generations, while limiting as much as possible the use of non-renewable resources, moderating their consumption, maximising their efficient use, reusing and recycling them”. In a key youth-focussed initiative, Pope Francis reached out to young economists, entrepreneurs, and change-makers. He invited them to an event in Assisi to promote a different type of economy in the spirit of St Francis of Assisi and Laudato Si’. Now The Economy of Francesco has become a community, bound together by a common commitment to promote a better economy. At the same time, the Vatican COVID-19 Commission is working through a variety of task forces and working groups to prepare practical proposals that bring the integral approach of Laudato Si’ to life.

Feast of Mary of the Southern Cross Patron of the Toowoomba Diocese
The feast is usually celebrated on September 1st, is a day of solemnity across the Diocese. The date is significant to our Diocese. It is the anniversary of the taking possession of the Cathedral by our first
bishop, James Byrne. The Patronal Feast is a day on which we especially pray for the whole Toowoomba Diocese and recall
that it is through the diocese that we are brought into communion with the universal Church. This Feast is especially ours and is an opportunity to renew our bonds as a diocese.

Mark 7:1-8,14-15,21-23 Unless we train ministers capable of warming people’s hearts, of walking with them in the night, of dialoguing with their hopes and disappointments, of mending their brokenness, what hope can we have for our present
and future journey? (Pope Francis, Meeting with the Bishops of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, 28 July 2013)

We celebrate Social Justice today Sunday the 29th of August. The Australian Bishops’ Social Justice Statement, Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor, invites us to join in responding to Pope Francis’ invitation to take a seven-year journey towards total ecological sustainability guided by seven Laudato Si’ Goals. The Statement provides theological foundations to ground and inspire our efforts to care for creation while responding to the needs of the disadvantaged and excluded. First reading Deuteronomy 4: 1-2, 6-8 You may add nothing to the world which I speak to you—keep the commands of the Lord. Responsorial psalm Ps 14: 2-5. R. v. 1 Response: The just will live in the presence of the Lord. Second reading James 1: 17-18, 21-22, 27 Be doers of the word. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! REFLECTION The just will live in the presence of the Lord
True religion is of the spirit – not merely a matter of outward observance
Outward observance without conversion of heart is useless and, at its worst, simply hypocrisy. On the other hand, the spiritual heart will show itself in outward observance; for our Lord, who told us that the Father looks for those who worship in spirit and in truth, also said, ‘If you love me, keep my commandments . . . do good . . . fast . . . pray . . . give alms.’ We need, then, to review often our lives to see that there is a genuine harmony between our inmost heart and our visible manner of acting. And so, Lord Jesus, with the psalmist I pray, ‘Create a clean heart in me; and make upright the spirit that is within me’ – so that nothing that is evil may come from me and that nothing I do will be mere pretence. If, as St James says, faith without works is dead, so, too, are works without faith dead things; they are lip-service and not a turning of the heart towards the Lord. Humanity is capable of so much that is good as well as much that is dreadful. The difference lies in whether we enthrone Christ in our hearts and live by his law or enthrone self and live by self-will. pray.com.au
