A Loving Church, Making a Difference in the World

Letter from the Pastor

Well here we are—it seems, impossibly quickly, another year has passed us by. We now

stand on the precipice of a new year. We begin our journey through this new year—through Easter

and Christmas, again, through good and bad, through the spiritual highs and lows.

I don’t know where you are with approaching the upcoming year. Are you excited? Are you

feeling like it’s a daunting preposition? Are you in the mind set of “Here we go, another year of

this?” I know, typically, people make resolutions at this point, but I think that most of us also

realize that by January 2nd those resolutions are pretty much gone. Maybe you make it through the

month if you’re one of the valiant few, but typically, mine don’t hang around too long.

I know that a lot of the time, especially at this point, we set some resolution about a big,

sweeping, dramatic change that we would like to make. But that seems, at least in my life, what

appears to be my downfall. A huge, life altering change is simply hard to make and stick with. So,

this year, I’m going to urge you to do something a little different.

Let’s work on small changes, especially when it comes to our life of faith. Maybe not that

we’re going to start a foodbank and suddenly feed all the people around us who need it, or dedicate

three hours to studying the Bible a day—instead, what happens if we start small? Maybe we decide

we’ll read one chapter of our Bible every night, or perhaps we buy one extra can of food right now to

donate.

The world-sweeping changes are great, but they are very hard to do—they require a lot more

effort and energy. However, if we focus instead on small changes, on looking at the little things that

we can do, we have the potential to make those big things happen. It doesn’t start with the large

items, or the huge acts; it starts with small acts that take place in our own back yards.

See you in the pews,

Pastor Jeff

January Extra Step – God Cares Ministry—

God Cares Ministry is an organization that assists veterans in need to find tempor-ary shelter, food, clothing, mentoring and employer contacts so they can best present themselves to prospective employers. Self-sufficiency is the goal and the ministry’s motto is: “Helping Others, Help Themselves.” Veterans put careers, families, and edu-

cation on hold to perform this sacrifice for us. Unfortunately, in some cases, these veterans lost those things they were required to put on hold. God Cares serves the Missouri counties of Warren, Lincoln, Montgomery, St. Charles, and Franklin. God Cares has no over-head, so all donations go directly to helping individuals. Those who serve in this ministry are all volunteers. Visit them at: http://god-cares-ministry.org/

Blood Facts and Statistics

Facts about blood needs • Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.

• Approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U.S.

• Nearly 7,000 units of platelets and 10,000 units of plasma are needed daily in the U.S.

• Nearly 21 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S.

• The blood type most often requested by hospitals is type O.

• More than 1.68 million people are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2016.

Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment.

• A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood.

Facts about the blood supply • The number of whole blood and red blood cell units collected in the U.S. in a year:

13.6 million

• The number of blood donors in the U.S. in a year: 6.8 million

• Although an estimated 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood

at any given time, less than 10% of that eligible population actually do each year.

• Blood cannot be manufactured – it can only come from generous donors.

Facts about the blood donation process • Donating blood is a safe process. A sterile needle is used only once for each donor

and then discarded.

• The actual blood donation typically takes less than 10-12 minutes. The entire process,

from the time you arrive to the time you leave, takes about an hour and 15 min.

• All donated blood is tested for HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis and other infectious

diseases before it can be released to hospitals.

• Information you give to the American Red Cross during the donation process is

confidential. It may not be released without your permission except as directed by law.

Facts about donors • Only 9 percent of people in the U.S. have type O negative blood. Type O negative

donors are universal red cell donors as their blood can be given to people of all blood

types—always in great demand and often in short supply.

• Type O negative blood is needed in emergencies before the patient's blood type is

known and with newborns who need blood.

• Forty-eight percent of people in the U.S. have type O (positive or negative) blood.

• Only 3 percent of people in the U.S. have AB positive blood type. AB positive type

blood donors are universal donors of plasma, which is often used in emergencies, for

newborns and for patients requiring massive transfusions. AB plasma is also usually

in short supply.

“One More Thing…New Year’s Resolutions”

As stated before, New Year’s Resolutions are hard to keep, and often overwhelming just

thinking about them. Here’s a new twist: How about thinking of the New Year as a “New

Start”—a start to something more meaningful, rewarding, or something fun? Instead of making a

resolution that sets yourself up to hours a week of exercise or “homework” of some sort, why

not make a commitment to perhaps read one book a month, or learn a new craft or start a new

hobby in this new year? Or plan to help a neighbor in need—it doesn’t have to be a big deal—

sometimes the smallest acts of kindness mean the most. Maybe decide to visit someone you’ve

been meaning to see for a long time—maybe visit a shut-in once a month or every other month

(visit two, each one every other month). Even a plan to spend more time with family could be a

resolution—we often see those who live just 10 miles away less often than those who live longer

distances from us. Start a “needy family fund” by stashing a small amount of money or food or

gift items away each month; you will be surprised how quickly it all adds up, and you will be able

to donate to local family in need, a charity or your church. Another thought: commit to phoning

a friend on a regular basis, one who needs someone to talk to, or plan a lunch date once a

month with old friends whom you seldom see…the ideas are endless. The point is to start small,

and make it fun for yourself—you will likely be able to stick to a commitment like that sooner

than one so demanding. Have a great New Year!

Annual Reports are needed from

ALL church committees/organizations.

Please email them to Robbin DeVore at

[email protected]

or see that she gets them ASAP to be

included in the annual report.

An adult bible study is in the making. The first session will

be immediately following church service.

A start date has not yet been determined.

So, be watching and listening for further information.

JANUARY WORD SEARCH

*********WINTER FUN FACTS: *********

• All snowflakes have 6 sides. • The average snowflake falls at about 3 mph. • A single snowstorm can drop 39 million tons of snow. • 10 inches of snow will melt down to only one inch of water. • Winter cold kills more than twice as many Americans as summer heat does. • Chionophobia is the persistent fear of snow, especially becoming trapped by snow. • Every winter, at least one septillion (1.000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) snow crystals fall from the sky. • While snow appears white, individual ice crystals are translucent. Snow is a bunch of ice crystals joined

together. When light hits snow, it bounces all around the ice crystals and the “color” appears white. • The most snow ever recorded in 24 hours in the U.S. was at Silver Lake, CO, in 1921, at 76 inches. • The coldest winters on Earth occur in Antarctica, where the ave. annual temperature is -72.9 degrees F. • An ave. of 105 snow-producing storms hit the U.S. per year, lasting 2-5 days, reaching several states. • Approximately 12% of the Earth’s land surface is covered in snow and ice. • Experts say an extreme winter doesn’t reduce the # of insects the following year. An out-of-season cold

snap would have more of an impact because the insects haven’t adjusted to the environmental change. • In 1974, the top 5 coldest countries in the world were Russia, Canada, Mongolia, Finland, and Iceland.
