In the first reading, the prophet cries out to God about violence and feels the isolaon of God’s si- lence. Too oſten, in families and workplaces, vio- lence goes unchallenged. In the worst cases, peo- ple of faith advise one another to go back into vio- lent and unsafe spaces to “keep the peace” or as part of the “sacrifice” demanded by one’s vocaon. In the second reading, Paul challenges his follow- ers to receive Jesus’ powerful flame: “For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather of power and love and self-control.” Our God worked eternal salvaon for all of us out of His Son’s vi- cious murder, but that does not make crucifixion any less evil.
