First Reading: Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8

Isaiah recounts the awe he felt the first time he saw the Lord, who was surrounded by angels. He began to feel despair because he was a man of unclean lips, until an angel touched an ember to his lips and pronounced them clean. The Lord asked who he should send forth, to which Isaiah replied, "Here I am, send me!"

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11

Paul reminds the Corinthians that Christ died for us to free us from our sins. He encourages them to remember the importance of Jesus' death and resurrection. He admits that he initially failed to believe, and therefore was very grateful to be called an apostle and preach in the name of Christ.

Gospel: Luke 5:1-11

Luke tells of Jesus preaching to a crowd, then joining Peter who was about to end a fruitless day of fishing. He told Peter to lower his net back in, and a great number of fish were caught. Upon seeing this, Peter and his companions, James and John, immediately abandoned their nets to follow Jesus.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS: HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 7, 2016 “When he had finished speaking he said to Simon, ‘Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.’ Simon answered, ‘Master we have been hard at it all night long and have caught nothing, but if you say so, I will lower the nets.’ Upon doing this they caught such a great number of fish that their nets were at the breaking point…Simon Peter fell at the knees of Jesus saying, ‘Leave me Lord, I am a sinful man.’” Great timing. Lent begins this week, a time of repentance, renewal and new hope. Pope Francis has placed special emphasis for us, providing us with ‘Messengers of Mercy’ for reconciliation. The Bishop of Rome invites us to walk with Jesus. What better time, than the season of Lent. We do not wish to walk alone, so, take a moment to go fishing, to invite someone else, one or two persons, to join in the Lenten journey with us. It may be a person who has grown weak in the practice of the faith, someone who has experienced hurts in the church, or is suffering from sickness or lack of hope. The nets we have are prayer, sacrifice and good works. We are the ones reaching, extending ourselves, so that others may come to know the mercy of God. The Pope described himself as a sinner. I too, can utter the words of Peter, not to leave me, but to walk and support me.

In his recent encyclical on the care of our common

drawing on the words of the Hebrew prophets, saints

like Francis of Assisi and Therese of Lisieux, the popes

who preceded him, and of Jesus himself. Let us pray this

Jesus...You are alive in every creature in your risen glory.

Praise be to you!” And prayerfully consider signing the

Year of Mercy

Dear Friends in the Lord:

In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the Peter’s Pence Collection is

an opportunity to become a witness of charity to those who suffer

most. Pope Francis has encouraged us to “open our eyes and see the

misery of the world, the wounds of our brothers and sisters who are

denied their dignity, and let us recognize that we are compelled to

heed their cry for help!” (Misericordiae Vultus, [MV] no. 15).

Through the Peter’s Pence Collection, we stand in solidarity

with Catholics all over the world who support the charitable works of

our Holy Father. Contributions to this collection support Pope Francis

as he reaches out to those suffering the effects of war and violence,

natural disasters, and religious persecution.

Pope Francis has told us that “mercy is the force that

reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the

future with hope” (MV, no. 10). Please prayerfully consider

participating in this collection and becoming a witness of charity, a

force of mercy that reaches out to those around the world. Please be

as generous as you can be.

With prayerful best wishes for a blessed year of Mercy, I am,

Faithfully in Christ,

Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan

A Note About the Various Parish Committees in Formation

The Parish Advisory Council has received an excellent response to our call for committee volunteers. We have

prepared a short description of the committees in advance of their meetings which will be held in the first half of

February. These descriptions are initial thoughts about the committees’ missions. Undoubtedly, they will evolve once

the committees begin meeting.

For those who have indicated an interest in a committee, a member of the Advisory Committee will be contacting you

in the next week. For anyone who has not previously responded, but who is interested in a committee, please contact

any of the members listed below.

The initial meeting of each committee will be held in the first two weeks of February.

Making All Things New

Please join this committee if you have a desire to help bring the Past, Present and Future of St. Matthew/St. Stanislaus

This originally was part of the Parish Bulletin for January 24th, but the snowstorm undoubtedly kept many parishioners from attending Mass that day. We are reprinting it so that all may have an opportunity to serve our Parish.
