QHMC PITTSWORTH RALLY REPORT

Over the years we have attended a number of Queensland Historic Motor Council rallies. No so long ago, we referred to them as Combined Council Rallies. The QHMC (Combined Council) is the overarching body that represents many historic motoring organisations in Queensland and they often make representation to the Queensland government in matters such as concessions for historic registration.

For a very long time, this event has been staged on the Queen’s Birthday Weekend. The DDVVMC has sent delegates to the QHMC for most of its existence. Currently Graham Allum and Joe Ciantar represent our club. Graham has held the position of President of the QHMC as has deceased life member Warren Klein.

Our Toowoomba club has hosted fi ve of these events, one each decade beginning in the seventies. In most other years, other restored vehicle clubs have shared the task and some excellent rallies have been held in many parts of southern Queensland. In the last few years, there have even been similar rallies in northern Queensland. For 2015, none of the member clubs showed interest in hosting the event so the committee decided to organise a rally themselves and Pittsworth was chosen as an ideal town. To my knowledge, most of the previous rallies have been held in much larger towns/cities.

Pittsworth proved to be a very good choice, mainly because of all of the wonderful back roads in the district. An appeal was made for enthusiasts to bring their oldest cars and the organisers were rewarded with the attendance of many fantastic vehicles.

It’s always desirable to have some veterans attend as these vehicles were the fi rst to be restored and the Queensland branch of the Veteran Car Club of Australia was formed in 1956 (I think). A number of T model Fords, a 1915 Buick and a 1911 Brush were present. The Brush was of particular interest. It only had a single cylinder engine, wooden axles and chassis as well as chain drive.

The owner and co-driver had no protection in the form of a windscreen or hood and it made fairly slow progress. To the owners’ credit, it completed the entire course over the three day event.

Th e Polishers Rag ~ DARLING DOWNS VETERAN & VINTAGE MOTOR CLUB 7

took us to Leyburn, Clifton and Nobby for lunch. At Leyburn, one of the rally entrants, Jim Bertram, gave a very interesting talk on his recollection of the Australian Grand Prix in 1948. There is a Leyburn street named Delahaye St as a Delahaye won the fi rst event. Jim reckons that the Delahaye won because it was able to complete the race as many of the other vehicles broke down. Apparently, the course was very stony and many radiators etc were damaged.

According to Jim who was sixteen at the time, the event was supposed to have been held at Lowood where there was an existing track. Apparently some of the local churches were not in favour of motor racing on a Sunday so Leyburn was chosen instead. The World War II airstrip had by 1948 been divided up and the farmers consented to taking down dividing fences. The farming families were Hamblyns, Porters and Backhouses and the corners of the track were named after them.

At the time Jim was more interested in motor cycles but he was invited to attend by some older acquaintances because he had a petrol coupon. Petrol rationing occurred in Australia between 1941 and 1951 and having enough petrol for a return trip from Brisbane to Leyburn required a number of people to pool their coupons.

He also shared a memory of a meal in Toowoomba that evening. It was the fi rst time he had eaten away from his home and he was amazed at an item on the menu he had never heard of; a mixed grill.

The Monday Rally took us out to the St Helens/Bongeen district and we had morning tea at Mt Tyson.

All of the evening meals and Monday’s lunch were held at the Tattersals Hotel, a heritage building on Pittsworth’s main street. The meals were excellent and the overall cost of the rally was very good value for money. The DDVVMC won the prize for the most attentive club with six members attending the complete rally and a further seven members attending some of the events.

Thanks must go to Christine and Greg Stevens. They really put in a huge effort. Christine is the current QHMC President. As well as organising the event with some help from very few others, they brought along three vehicles one of which was a veteran T.

Everyone I spoke to after the event seemed to have enjoyed a fantastic weekend.

Pat Murphy

There were many vintage cars and the owners really enjoyed driving on the country roads even though they were a little rough.

The rest of the entrants drove a wonderful array of restored vehicles of many different makes and models.

On Saturday, we drove to Back Plains school for a barbeque lunch. The P& C did a fantastic job and the kids were involved in a colouring competition. Sunday

MEMBER’S MOTORS/VEHICLES

One of the privileges of being editor of this great club is that I get a copy of the membership details so that I can always check the spelling of your names, as well as email you a copy of the magazine when it is produced.

As well as names addresses & contacts, the membership list also contains vehicles owned and their state of restoration. In one of my meanderings through this list, I came up with a total of 426 vehicles, being: 13 motorcycles, 20 trucks, 3 tractors, 6 stationary engines & 384 cars.

I also sorted the machinery by date, and some interesting results show.Firstly the chart shows that our biggest “clump” of vehicles is at the end of the vintage period.

It also shows that our earliest vehicle (it is in the form of a stationary engine) is a 1901 De Dion Bouton.

So when I headed out to Pittsworth for the start of the RACQ QHMC Southern Queensland rally, I contacted Colin & Deidre Magill to see if I could fi nd out more about this motor.

Colin & Deidre have an extremely interesting past as far as motor vehicles are concerned. The family trust has retained many of the vehicles bought since new. They have done a lot of driving, including three times around Australian in their 1963 Studebaker, twice towing a caravan. This photo shows them during the 1995 Mobil 1 rally.

I had a great time meeting Colin & Deidre & feel privileged to be shown through their collection. David Grant

Vehicle count

To put the De Dion Bouton in perspective, at the turn of the century, De Dion-Bouton had been in business for almost two decades. At that time they sold more automobiles than the combined totals of Daimler, Lancaster, Napier and Wolseley in the United Kingdom, and exceeded three times the sale of the ‘curved dash‘ Oldsmobile which was America’s best selling automobile.

Starting with steam engines, which Trepardoux mostly designed, De Dion & Bouton eventually split with Trepardoux as he was opposed to the gasoline engine. They went on to develop high speed (revolutions per minute), single cylinder, rear-engined, simple, easy to drive little cars (these features except the single cylinder and rear engine are still fashionable today). In the early 1900’s production of vehicles was 200 per month. Sales of ‘loose‘ engines reached 50,000 in 1906 alone. [1]

Of signifi cance to Queensland in particular is the fact that the fi rst vehicle produced in Queensland circa 1902-4, the Trevethan ‘Ly E. Moon’, had a single-cylinder De Dion Bouton motor. [2]

It would be impossible to say for certain, as no photos exist of the details of the motor in the Trevethan, but comparing the part of the crankcase shown in [3], you can see the same external webbing pattern on the drive side of Colin Magill’s motor as on the Trevethan.

The carburettor & magneto on Colin’s motor are not original. Colin said you date De Dion Bouton motors by the piston, as the date of manufacture is stamped on the crown.

SUPPER ROSTER

ATTENTION LADY CLUB MEMBERS.The club needs ladies to help with Supper after the General Meeting held each month.I have approached some lady club members and they have generously offered their services.A roster has been drawn up but there are a couple of months vacant. If you could help it would be greatly appreciated. Ideally, it would be great to have enough ladies to do only one supper per year.

It was also mentioned that we need a roster for vacuuming after supper. Maybe the husbands of those on the roster will volunteer to do that job or some of the men who are single or whose partner doesn’t come to meetings.

HOLDEN HD & HR NATIONALS

The 14th HD & HR Holden Nationals were held at Warwick over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend on 6 and 7 June. Some 80 gleaming HD and HR model Holdens were on display at the show and shine in Leslie Park on the Saturday and on the Sunday they all travelled in convoy to Queen Mary Falls near Killarney. What a spectacular sight that was to see these 50 year old cars dominating the roadways again. Entrants travelled from as far away as South Australia to attend the event.

Alan & Viki Lowe made trip in their HD sedan and Jim Beh was there in his HR sedan. Jim’s car took out 2nd place in the HR Restored Original class with trophies awarded down to 6th place in that category. Alan fared well with the raffl es and had a good supply of cleaning products, oil and fi lters tucked away in the HD boot for the trip home.

A wonderful weekend was enjoyed by all who attended. The 2016 Nationals will be held at Dubbo, NSW.

For Sale----------------------------------------------------------------------------2Illness forces sale of our 1928 Cadillac 341-A 7 Passenger Sedan. $60,000 negotiable.

Body by Fisher. Body Style 7930. 140” Wheelbase.Date Shipped Ex Factory USA: 13 December 1927 Sydney, Australia. Body No: 2446, Engine No:309196, Frame No:3-9663 Full Matching Number Vehicle. Original Colour/Trim: Black, Gold Cord Trim.

This 1928 Cadillac 7 Passenger Sedan was originally imported to Australia in RHD format and is not only a piece of GM motoring history, but also a piece of Australian motoring history. This vehicle would be one of only a handful of vehicles, originally imported into Australia in 1928 that has survived the past 87 years.During 1928, 108 Cadillacs, & 106 La Salles were registered in Australia, and were imported by either: GM Export Company, Lane Motors, McGrath Motors or other private independent importers. After being garaged for 38 years this vehicle was located as a barn fi nd in 2000. Restoration started in 2003/04, once 80% of the missing parts had been located.Restoration continued until late 2014 when ill health forced cessation of the restoration. By this date the last of the missing parts had been located. This vehicle is 100% complete including many hard, if not, impossible to fi nd parts and accessories.

FOR SALE & WANTED TO BUY

The chassis, woodwork, engine and body, including paint, have all been restored via a ground up restoration.

Trimming of the interior is the only item that is required in order to complete this total rebuild.Part of the trimming budget has already been spent, and trimming items are held by the company that the present owner has appointed as the trimmer. These will be transferred to the potential purchaser. The major amount of time and money has already been spent, and it is a good opportunity for someone to take over this project and fi nish it.

This is a huge and impressive vehicle and will make a lasting impression on all who see it or have the privilege of a drive in it.For further details & photos, contact Ken & Karen Andersen at [email protected]
