The St. Francis 50+ Adult Group
Last Sunday, we had visitors at the 9:30 Mass from Temple Beth Or on Creedmoor Road. We welcomed them at Mass and then afterwards we met for about an hour and the group had questions about their experience. They wanted to know all kinds of things about what we do here: what do
the different colors mean, why the spare branch on the back wall, why all those people coming forward toward the altar toward the end, why would we hear a reading from the Book of Exodus at a Christian service, what does “Franciscan” mean, how do Christian churches see the Jewish tradition? We discussed all of this over Daylight Donuts. For this group, their visit was part of an effort on the part of their synagogue to better understand other religious traditions in their area. We were happy to host them.
You will note that we have a custom here at St. Francis of welcoming people from other faith traditions at the beginning of Mass. This is because we understand that many people here have friends or family or relatives who come from other faith traditions; also that Catholicism – even with its rapid growth here - remains very much a minority religion here in the South. We also understand that, in light of the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s, the Catholic Church began to open itself to the wisdom of other faith traditions and instead of seeing itself as separate and self-enclosed, began to look outward and look for things in common with other faith tradi-tions. After Mass last weekend, one woman appreciated our hosting of the visitors from the synagogue, and told me her father was Jewish. Our faith community here continues to welcome those from other faith traditions.
On another note, we continue to make progress with our 2019 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Thanks to all who have made a contribution to the appeal, and if you have not, we ask that you please consider your pledge for 2019. Blessings on your week!

What makes the tried and true parable of the Prodigal Son outstanding are not all those things that we might think make this a perfect Lenten gospel. Our focus tends to be on the sorrow of the one son, who realizes he’s messed up, or on the generosity of the father, who asks for no sign of contrition or reform, or even on the other son, who is justifiably angry over his father’s neglect. All around this gospel revolve questions on how the major characters may or may not be operat-ing out of simply selfish motives. The exception being, of course, the father, who appears gener-ous, but also a bit dimwitted by our standards. So what might we take away from this perhaps most famous of all the gospel’s parables? Well, it may just be the very practical message of taking nothing for granted, ever! Everything is gift, and everything could very well be other-wise. The sons’ relationship with their father; the father’s relationship with his sons; the brothers’ relationship with each other; the expectations and privileges each son demanded; the father’s ability to guide and direct his children – all these elements speak more to the need of tending and caring for what God gives each of us, particularly the many relationships upon which our lives are built and nurtured. The appearance of this gospel in Lent, again, shows us that it is not necessarily in giving up or sacrifice or denial that we come to a realization of what it means to be a believer in this world, but more in the recognition and reverencing of the many gifts we have, given without proving ourselves worthy of or meriting them, that the wonder and glory of a life of faith shines for us.

April 6Field Trip to the Whitaker House in southeast Raleigh Join us Saturday, April 6 from 2:00 to 4:00pm for an opportunity to better understand the dynamics of poverty and racism through a guided-tour and workshops in South Park, the his-toric African-American neighborhood in Raleigh - guided by St. Francis parishioners who have built relation-ships in this neighborhood through a weekly lunch ministry to neighbors in partnership with non-profit community development organization Passage Home. We will explore how issues of poverty and racism intersect with ac-cess to education, affordable housing, and jobs and wages. April 8Book Discussion on Racial Justice and the Catholic ChurchJoin us for a three-session book discus-sion on Fr. Bryan
Massingale’s book Racial Justice and the Catholic Church. This book ex-amines the presence of racism in this country from its early history through the Civil Rights Movement and the election of Barack Obama. In February, our parish coordinated a fieldtrip to the International Civil Rights Museum in Greensboro where parishio-ners were able to learn first-hand about the non-violent protests of the 1960s that ushered in a new era of civil rights for African-Americans. Many have sug-gested that we’ve come a long way since those days of legalized racial segrega-tion, disenfranchisement, and discrimina-tion in the US. However, many others are quick to point out that racial and ethnic inequalities still loom large in American society with people of color facing steep structural barriers when it comes to securing quality housing, healthcare, employment and livable wages, and quality education. Similarly, it is well-documented that racial disparities also permeate the criminal justice system and undermine its effectiveness.

In November of 2018, the US Bishops addressed this current situation of racism with a pastoral letter that encourages re-newed discernment, conversion, prayer, teaching, and action. The letter, titled Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love, maintains that the harm racism causes is an attack on human life that the faithful must oppose as consis-tently and forcefully as they do abortion, assisted suicide, euthanasia, the death penalty, and other forms of violence against the human person. In light of this strong encouragement from our bishops and the clear signs that this topic needs more conversation, we are coordinating the following opportunities for our parish and hope to continue to probe the issue into the future. Our program is a small group-based faith formation model, centered on the Mass, offering fellowship, in a fun, social setting and safe environment. Because Mass is the source and summit of our faith, our program meeting times are sched-uled after the Mass to break open the treasures of the faith that have just been proclaimed. Our small group-based model mirrors the structure of the liturgy with four portions – gather, proclaim, break and send. We typically meet twice a month during the traditional academic year.
Session times: Cross Walk (K-5) – meets Sundays following the 9:30am Mass; Cross Train (middle school) and Cross Road (high school) – meet Sundays following the 5:30pm Mass.Registration opens on Tuesday, April 23. Your child can attend camp from 9:00am – 12:00noon, Monday through Friday. Some of our wonderful preschool staff as well as some community specialists lead our camps. Congratulations to The Franciscan School’s Academic Decathlon team! The team placed first in the logic competition and individual students, Evan Burfeind and Jenna Dziadul, won first place in Social Studies and Current Events, respectively. Rachael Setia won second place in Religion and Michael Lotchin finished in second place, as well, in English; Harrison Rurka finished in third place in Math. All of this means the team earned overall first place in the Diocese of Raleigh competition that was held at Immaculata Catholic School in March. Well done and many thanks goes to the coach of the team, our sixth grade social studies teacher, Kathryn Nystrom!

The 50+ Adult Group is sponsored by The Catholic Community of St. Francis of Assisi and affiliated with the Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources (Raleigh PRCR) Adult Program. The elected Group Officers, as well as the Board of Directors provide the Group leadership. Membership is open to St. Francis parishioners and residents of Wake County and surrounding areas.The St. Francis 50+ Group has been off to a busy start in 2019! They have a pretty consistent rotation of activities each month, and then add in extra activities and events when they find fun and exciting opportunities. It seems there is something for everyone.They had over 80 people attend each of their potlucks so far, and each section of the alphabet rotates which part of the lunch they bring (entrée, side or dessert). They have continued their monthly Game Day with rotating between playing Bingo, Bunco, and Left, Right, Center. They are also meeting up monthly for social time at Season’s 52 for Happy Hour and at either Briggs or Creedmoor Café for Brunch.Aside from their monthly events, they have also taken part in some other exciting activities the last few months. In January they took a bus load to Sanford to have Lunch and see a play called A Second Helping: The church Basement Ladies Sequel at the Temple Theater. They also attended the Friday Favorites Concert with the North Carolina Symphony and afterwards had lunch at Vivo. In March along with their usual activities they also celebrated St. Patrick’s Day at Trali as a group and attended a group tour of the Cathedral. The mes-sages request an immediate reply and are sometimes an outright solicitation for gift cards. These messages are part of an ongo-ing nationwide scam targeting churches and their parishioners. Please be advised that our friars or staff will never personally solicit money, gift cards or favors from you in this manner. If you receive one of these messages, do not click on any link or otherwise respond. Create a screen capture if you wish, and then immediately just delete the message.

Come to the Ignited by Truth Catholic Conference and grow spiritually through a deeper understanding of the truths of the teachings of the Catholic Church. The 16th annual Ignited By Truth Confer-ence will be held April 6 at NC State’s Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, featuring renowned speakers Dr. Tim Gray, Fr. Larry Richards, Dr. Peter Kreeft, Susan Brinkmann, Adam Blai, and Fr. Dwight Longenecker. Opening Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Zarama, and Catholic vendors, Eucharistic Adoration, and confession will be available all day. The student program will include free pizza lunch, vibrant speaker Nick De La Torre, music and prayer with Fr. Ian Van Heusen and Dana Catherine. The day will conclude with a concert performance by Dana Catherine and Nick and Alina De La Torre.
