QUEEN OF MARTYRS CHURCH Evergreen Park, Illinois
Fr. Marty’s Musings It is uncertain but hopeful as I write if we can celebrate public Masses at Queen of Martyrs this weekend. In this time of doubled up challenges, pandemic and civic unrest, let us come together spiritually, if not all physically yet, to pray for healing, reform and greater unity.
If we are allowed public Masses—Welcome back!
Legend says that St. Patrick used the shamrock to teach converts the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. He held up the one plant with three leaves to demonstrate one God, but three Persons. Some dispute the legend, but in Ireland, all the stories are true—some of them actually happened. Trinity Sunday celebrates our faith in a Triune God—forming the framework of the Christian creed. Water poured over all Christians in the name of the Trinity unites us. We recall the words of our Baptism whenever we offer the Sign of the Cross, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” This past Easter season, we missed the powerful symbol of the Sprinkling Rite in place of the Penitential Act that echoes our Baptism. The great symbolism of the Trinity calls us to be one and united as our creative, redeeming, and sanctifying God is. The Trinity is a binding force for the Church. The Nicene Creed acknowledges the Church as catho-lic.” The word is not capitalized, meaning universal. The Church is for all, that all might be one. The God of ultimate connectedness invites us to see the bonds that tie all humanity through God’s grace. The Trinity knot graphic that I created for the Fr. Marty’s Musings heading above represents the Holy Trinity. The circle interlaced with the three-point symbol recalls the unity both of our one God and us as the Body of Christ. May our love connect us to our families and beyond. May our faith be lived in love and witnessed by our lives. May we rejoice in the Spirit that we are one as children of God. Let us be true to our baptismal commit-ment to the one God in three persons. The Retired Priests Collection is next weekend. Fr. Ed Mikolajczyk and many other priests have served the Church faithfully. Some remain active in ministry well past the usual retirement age of 70. Priests’ Health and Retirement (formerly Priests Retirement and Mutual Aid Association) depends on your help to meet needs. Please show your appreciation by supporting the collection and keep them in your prayers. Go to our website, www.queenofmartyrschurch.com, and please volunteer for the many tasks in our reopen-ing.
Fr. Marty Marren
Prayer to the Trinity O eternal Trinity, I have known in your light, which came to me with the light of holy faith, the many wonderful things you have declared to me. You have set out for me the path of supreme perfection, so that I no longer need serve you in darkness, but in your splendid light, and so that I may be a mirror of a good and holy life, arising from the darkness of my sins. Self-love darkened the eye of my intellect, but you eternal Trinity, have dissipated the darkness with your light.
St. Catherine of Siena
Statement of Cardinal Cupich on the murder of George Floyd and its aftermath
The past nights I have watched in great personal pain as the pent-up anger of our people caught fire across our country. I saw the city where I was born, the cities where I have lived, the city I pastor now, catch embers from the city where I was educated and burn. Was I horrified at the violence? Yes. Was I surprised? No.
As the saying goes, if you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention. What did we expect when we learned that in Minneapolis, a city often hailed as a model of inclusivity, the price of a black life is a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill? When we added another name to the list of those murdered for being black or for caring about the marginalized?
I will not pretend to speak with any authority about the challenges people of color experience in our society. I do not share the fear they put on when they and their children leave their homes every day. I do not know what it means to be “other.” But I know there is a way to fix it. And the fix begins when we stop talking about the proportionality of “their” response and start talking about the proportionality of “ours.” Surely a nation that could put a man in space, his safety assured by the brilliance of black women, can create a fair legal system, equitable education and employment opportunities and ready access to health care. Laws do not solve problems, but they create a system where racism in all its forms is punished and playing fields are leveled.
The COVID-19 pandemic has been called a great equalizer. It has been even more a great revealer of societal cancers as deadly as the virus. As others have pointed out, health insecurity kills, and poverty is poison. We can and must make a society that views the soaring of a child’s potential with more joy than the soaring of a rocket.

I stand ready to join religious, civic, labor and business leaders in coming together to launch a new effort to bring about recovery and reconciliation in our city. We do not need a study of the causes and effects. Those answers can be found on the shelves of government offices and academic institutions across our burning nation. No, we need to take up the hard work of healing the deep wound that has afflicted our people since the first slave ships docked on this continent. And we need to start today.

Queen of Martyrs Parish Outreach
Sandwich Schedule for Adult Members at 9:00 a.m. in the Convent on the following Wednesdays:
2020 June 10 & 24
(Dates subject to change)
Today we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Trinity – one God, three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is a mystery we learn in our early Christian education that follows us through the sacraments as we go through life. As children of God, let us continue his work in our daily lives following the guidance of the Son, Jesus, and the talents of the Holy Spirit.
Considering recent events, I find the opening words of today’s second reading from St. Paul to the Corinthians quite appropriate. “Brothers and sisters, rejoice. Mend your ways, encourage one another, agree with one anoth-er, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you.” Share God’s love and peace in all the little things you do.
**As we find ourselves in such unknown territory and unfamiliar situations, it’s really important that we look out for one another – while honoring their space. The Outreach program would like to offer help to members of our parish who may find themselves in a tough situation. Our resources are limited but we may be able to provide some assistance with food cards that we have on hand. You can leave your name and number at the rectory and someone will get back to you. Again these are strange times for all of us and we will try to do the best that we can.
Parish Calendar for 2020/2021 Fiscal Year Please email any dates your ministry/group would like to reserve for the upcoming year. Please send dates/times/room choices to [email protected] as soon as possible. Deadline was June 1st.

Dear Friends,
Catholic Charities food pantries are seeing record demand because of the economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis. Our food pantry at St. Blasé in Summit is serving higher numbers of families than usual, many of them first-time clients who have suddenly found themselves out of work.
At the same time, we are finding it harder and harder to acquire some common food items. As a result, we cannot provide families with as much food as they really need.
We need your help to ensure that our pantry shelves stay stocked with the items most in need: canned vegetables, peanut butter, rice, canned soup, jelly, macaroni &cheese, dry cereal, pasta, tuna, oatmeal, pasta sauce, canned fruit and fruit juice. Here’s what you can do….
Make a Monetary Donation or Fundraise for Catholic Charities: Donate or Fundraise online at https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/CovidResponseSouthRegion or mail a check payable to Catholic Charities to 12731 S. Wood Street, Blue Island 60406.
Make an In-Kind Donation: Organize a food drive, collect or purchase food for our food pantry at St. Blasé or donate items from your home. Donation delivery and/or pick up can be arranged by contacting St. Blasé Food Pantry at 708-563-2407.
We are grateful for the outpouring of generosity we have already seen. We ask for your continued support and prayers as we struggle to feed our neighbors in need in the southwest suburbs.
