Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany. It helps us to understand God revealing who God is in Jesus. It puts into perspective that in Jesus God came as a savior for all people. The Magi journeyed to the stable in Bethlehem where they paid homage to the Christ child by presenting Him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. They were

instructed to go back and give witness to what they had seen in Bethlehem. They were encouraged to go back and share with the people of their countries the light of Christ with others. Like the Magi, we are called to share the Light of Christ in our lives. What gifts do we bring to share? How do we make Jesus known to others? Now that we have entered a new year, let us be inspired to bring forth and share God’s message of peace and good will.

Next Sunday, we move back to Ordinary time. The Christmas season ends with this Sunday’s celebration. I want to thank you for helping to make Christmas a spiritual and uplifting celebration. The joy of seeing families coming together to attend Mass was inspiring. Your generosity and support is truly appreciated.

Thank you to the Arts & Environment Committee under the supervision of Mrs. Pat Mason for making the Church look stunning and beautiful. Many people commented on how wonderful the Church looked. Each year the committee gets better in the decoration and décor. Thanks to Mrs. Carole Prendergast and the various choirs, along with the cantors and instrumentalists for enhancing our liturgies. To Mike Walsh and the lectors for the proclaiming the Scriptures. To Ms. Bernadine Smierciak and the children from School and Saturday School of Religion for their participation in the 4:00PM Mass on Christmas Eve. To our servers, ushers and Eucharistic Ministers, and to the priests for their homilies and assistance at Mass. To our maintenance staff and parish staff for all the behind the scenes efforts in getting ready for Christmas. And most especially to our parishioners and friends whose presence at Mass made it all worthwhile. Thank you.

I am grateful for all who came out to participate in the Living Rosary on Friday. It’s always inspiring to see the candles lit around the Church with parishioners representing the beads. Thanks to the members and officers of the Altar & Rosary for sponsoring the event.

A reminder to keep our 8th grade students of our School and Saturday School of Religion in your prayers next Saturday as they prepare to take their high school entrance exam.

Have a good week.

God Bless,

“Kindness is showing love to someone else. I believe that kindness is the cure to violence and hatred around the world.” I saw this quote from Lady Gaga in the weekend news magazine recently. As we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord this weekend, let’s remember that an epiphany is a type of revelation. As we go through 2017, let’s try to reveal our true Christian spirit by spreading kindness in our daily lives. Saying thanks, a simple smile, calling an elderly relative, helping a neighbor, a few dollars in the poor box – these are just a few examples of spreading kindness. What can you do to reveal your Christianity throughout 2017?

“I’ve always looked forward to coming to Harlan. I’m so lucky and grateful that I got to experience my first time in Harlan with all of you, especially my dad. This week my relationships have transformed; along with my ability to use different kinds of tools, I have grown much closer to the OLW girls. I hope to keep those relationships strong and pure. My special God moment was when little Shanell walked over. I remember finding the perfect blue Bible in the gross house. I thought I should take it, but instead I left it. After a few sun rays, showers, and long nights, the Bible finally found a home with Shanell. It was so amazing when she mentioned how she was collecting Bibles for the boys and girls club and there was a perfect Bible sitting right there next to all of the debris. I’ve always wondered what it was like to experience a ‘God wink’ I finally had my ‘God wink’ and in such a beautiful place, Harlan, Kentucky. I’ll never forget when Shanell begged Olivia and me to stay at the camp or when the little ones took my glasses. I truly believe it’s amazing that Harlan has provid-ed me with so many amazing memories, mountains, friends, and ice cream. I am already looking forward to future Harlan trips and getting to know each and every one of you a little bit better. “ —Maeve

Queen of Martyrs School Students Enjoys the Christmas Season

Teachers, Staff and Students participated in many wonderful events to share in the spirit of Christmas. Students in grades Pre-K through 3rd attended the Mother McAuley Christmas Concert. A few of the students were invited on stage to ring bells during the song “Jingle Bells”. Later

in the month the Mother McAuley Show Choir came to perform in Church for the entire student body.

Queen of Martyrs students in grades Pre-K through 4th Grade held the “Show of Songs” for Parents and guests in Church on Tuesday, December 13th. The evening was filled with wonderful

Christmas music to get everyone in the Holiday Spirit!

Kindergarten performed “The First Christmas” Play on Monday December 19th. The students did a great job telling the story of Jesus’ Birthday. The church was filled with shepherds, angels, animals, and of course Mary, Joseph, Gabriel,

Elizabeth and Zachariah as well as “The Three Kings” and “Drummer Boys“. The reenactment was a truly beautiful way to remember that “Jesus is the Reason for the Season!”

A special visitor came to Queen of Martyrs School right before Christmas. Santa took time out from his busy schedule to visit the students and wish them a very Merry Christmas!

A prayer service was held on the final day of school before break as the students were reminded to keep Jesus in their hearts, not only during Christmas but each and every day.
