One of the biggest challenges that faces our society today concerns bullying. It has gone beyond the scope of meeting someone after school to fight it out and prove who is superior and stronger than the other person. Today bullying comes in many forms

through texting, tweeting or twitter. One person’s reputation can be damaged in an instant. People don’t take the time to talk things out. With one touch of a finger on an iPhone or iPad comments can be made to put a person down and leave a path of destruction.

In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus describing a process of reconciliation. If we have a problem with someone, it’s important for us to have a conversation to see if we can resolve the problem. Bring witnesses, invite the community for support, provide help to deal with the issue. Jesus reminds us “to treat him as you would a Gentile or tax collectors”. How do we respond? We have a responsibility to act with respect and love. We are called to be a people who are charitable to one another. We need to set an example for others. It’s important for us to confront the evil doer and encourage him to change his behavior. We are called to a higher standard of conduct that challenges us to go one step further in establishing peace and reconciliation among our brothers and sisters. This question for us is: Are we willing to change our behavior and live up to the responsibilities that make us sons and daughters of the Lord?

We welcome our football teams and cheerleaders along with their coaches to the 9:30AM Mass. We wish them success as they begin their fall season against St. John Fisher.

MartyrsFest is fast approaching. If you haven’t purchased your raffle ticket, you can do so after all the weekend Masses or at the rectory during the week. The tickets are $50.00. Help us to reach our goal in selling all 1000 tickets.

We congratulate the Sisters of Mercy as they prepare to celebrate the Blessing and Dedication of their new facility, “Mercy Circle” on Monday, September 8th. Cardinal George will preside at the blessing ceremony.

Have a good week.

God Bless,

“Harlan. How do I describe Harlan? How do I explain the beauty of the mountains? How do I explain the laughs shared, and all the memories I made here in Harlan? How do I explain the joy I felt knowing I

was doing something great? The only word that comes to mind while thinking about all of this is, ‘indescribable.’ I can’t put into words how much this trip has changed me. It has opened my eyes to a whole new world I didn’t even know existed. I became closer with friends that I can now call family. I leave Harlan knowing that I will never forget anything I did here, and knowing I will always be welcomed back to a place I can call home.”-Abby

Queen Of Martyrs Celebrates Back To School With A Cook Out and Open House

Students, parents, faculty, staff joined Principal Ted Morgan, Father Ed, and Father Kevin for a back to school cook-out sponsored by the Queen Of Martyrs Parish School Advisory. Hamburgers, hotdogs, and chips were on the menu as well as good weather, friendship, and community building.

A Back to School Open House followed the cookout. Parents and students had the opportunity to walk through the school and greet the their child’s teachers. The students worked hard on papers, worksheets, and artwork that was displayed for their parents to view during the Open House. The event was won-derfully attended and enjoyed by all! Queen of Martyrs School is off to a great start thanks to dedicated students, parents, teachers, and staff all working together to make our school the best that it can be!

PLAYGROUND DONATIONS

We are looking for gently used playground equipment for our outside play area Queen of Martyrs School. Items such as Step 2 or Little Tikes clubhouses or any play equipment (no slides) made of PVC materials, would be greatly appreciated. We will pick up donations. Please contact Janine Missey at the parish rectory—708-423-8110.

With your help, we can create a fun and safe play area for the children of Queen of Martyrs to enjoy!

Thank you!
