The Scripture readings this weekend reflect on God’s love and mercy for us. We are reminded that God so loved the world that He was willing to sacrifice His Son for us. God’s purpose is to give us life. He doesn’t want to condemn or punish us. He wants to pour out and share His love with us. It is this God who has been present to us throughout salvation history encouraging us to journey with Him this Lenten season. Where do you see God present in your life today? We are part of God’s creation. He gives us the light to make the right choices by following His

teaching and example. He comforts us through His warmth, understanding and forgiveness. He calls us to a life of spirituality that offers us the gift of salvation. How do we see ourselves as part of God’s image of love? What does this mean to us? We are half way on our Lenten journey. Easter is fast approaching. What else do you need to do to make Lent a meaningful and memorable experience for you? May you continue to discover the immensity of God’s love and put it to good use as you grow in your relation-ship with God.

This weekend we continue to remember and honor St. Patrick. A man filled with faith, determination and love. Keep the celebrations safe and enjoy the festivities that remind us how lucky and proud we are to be a wee bit “Irish” today.

My thanks and appreciation goes out to Mrs. Lois Kettering, Mrs. Karen Manning, Mrs. Mary Ellen Clifford and their committee for hosting our Celtic Ceili Celebration. Everyone who participated in the 5K run, the pancake breakfast and the Mass had a wonderful time. Thanks for all your hard work.

To those of Italian and Polish heritage, I want to wish you a Happy St. Joseph’s Day. Sometimes St. Joseph gets lost in the in celebration of St. Patrick, but his contribution and example to our faith is just as important.

Our school children celebrated another successful St. Baldrick’s Day last Friday.

Thanks for your prayers for the women who participated in CHRP and for Deacon Bob who led a Men’s Cursillo last week. Both events were spirit-filled and memorable occasions.

Don’t forget our 4:00PM Mass on Sunday. Our teens are doing a fantastic job in celebrating and participating in the liturgy. You are most welcome to attend.

Have a good week.

God Bless,

Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday.

Happy St. Patrick and St. Joseph Days this week.

“Jesus be with me today

in everything I do and say.”

This week we celebrate the feast days of St. Patrick and St. Joseph, both of whom have provided inspiration to help those in need. Nearly one million Irish died during the great famine of the 1840’s. During this time nearly 2.1 million persons moved from Ireland in search of a better life – with about 70% of this group settling in the United States. To help immigrants adjust to life in America, Bishop John Hughes is credited with bringing The St. Vincent de Paul Society to New York City. For more than 50 years, the Joseph House – founded by Sr. Mary Elizabeth Gintling – has served the poor and homeless in Maryland. Sister Gintling named it for St. Joseph because he so selflessly provided for the Holy Family. Although Sr. Gintling died in 2004, her work continues in Maryland providing shelter and job training for the poor and homeless. Your continued support of our St. Vincent de Paul Society at Queen of Martyrs allows us to continue to help the poor and home-less in our area. Thanks for all your support -we couldn’t do it without you!

NEED A NEW CAR?

The Chicagoland Society of St. Vincent de Paul is raffling off a brand new 2015 Chrysler 200 as a part of their “Friends of the Poor” benefit on April 19th. The cost of each raffle ticket is $25.00. We will be selling raffle tickets in the back of the church after Saturday and Sunday masses for the next few weeks or you can contact me at [email protected]. Proceeds from the benefit and the raffle will be filtered back to individual conferences this year so we are hoping to sell a bunch. Thanks for your help! (If interested in the benefit itself, it is at the Drury Lane Oakbrook; the cost is $75 per person; on April 19th ; need to check on the time – that is our “Su Casa” Sunday, so we’ll be helping to feed the homeless that afternoon!)

Queen of Martyrs Students Conduct Scientific Experiments

Mrs. Creevy’s 5th and 6th Grade Science classes as well as Mrs. Brown’s and Mrs. Bischoff’s 4-Year Old Pre-Kindergarten students studied Candy Chromatography, a method of separating different kinds of molecules, as part of their Valentines Day themed lesson. The students used filter paper, water, and black jelly beans to reveal the hidden dyes in the jelly bean. The students then analyzed the filter paper, which absorbed the chemical reaction between the water and the jelly bean. The students made conclusions as part of their lab. They also used different candies and substances such as vinegar and baking soda to create a chemical reaction that produced carbon dioxide causing conversation hearts to move up and down in their container. The 4 Year Old Pre-Kindergarten students placed their conversation hearts in various solutions including honey, salt, vinegar, and baking soda to observe how these substances altered the candy. They noted changes in the color and size of the candy as well as how the letters on the hearts disintegrated. The

students enjoyed observing the experiments and making predictions about the outcome. They can now officially call themselves chromatographers!
