The month of November is a time for reflecting and remembering. We began the month by celebrating the Feast of All Saints followed by the Feast of All Souls. During these days we reflect on those people who remained faithful to God and were elevated to sainthood or who were people in our lives, that were part of our families and were inspirations to us, whom we loved and now remembered as part of the faithful departed.

Through their loss, we draw from the strength and values that were important to them that give us courage and hope.

The readings from Scripture ask us to focus on what talents and abilities do we have that give back to the Lord? How are we investing our time and talents and preparing for the second coming? What is our image of God? Is it a God that we are inspired by to use the talents and abilities we possess or is it a God that we fear will punish us causing us to doubt and refrain from using our talents? How do we want to be remembered? As a people who used their resources and faith to share Christ with others, namely the good and faithful servant, or as a people who squandered their opportunity to get to know God in their life? You decide!

Today we welcome our 7th and 8th grade students from School and from Saturday Faith Formation class to the 9:30am Family Mass. It is wonderful to celebrate special occasions as a parish family. I am grateful for the families who joined us to celebrate this event.

Don’t forget to bring in your food donations before or after Mass to the St. Joseph room to support the Queen of Martyrs Parish Outreach (formerly St. Vincent de Paul Society) annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Your generosity and contribution is truly appreciated.

A bit of good news: We received a rebate check for $5,384.74 from the Annual Catholic Appeal. I am encouraging those who have yet to fulfill their pledges to do so. Another rebate check will be coming to us in March. The rebate indicates that our parish fulfilled its pledge and surpassed it. I am grateful for your efforts in this matter.

I invite all the families to join us this Thursday as we observe Thanksgiving for the 9:00am Mass. It’s our opportunity to thank God for all that has been given to us. It’s a great way to start the day—praying as a parish community.

Remember to come to the Parish Consultation meeting for a new pastor, Wednesday, November 29 at 7:00pm in Vitha Hall—see the bulletin insert.

Have a good week.

God Bless,

Today’s gospel presents the parable of the talents. Two of the three servants invest and double their talents while the third hides his away in fear of losing it. We have all been given talents by the Lord to share with others. How you use your talents is up to you. Will you find ways to share your talents with others to try to help make the world a better place?

Also, Happy Thanksgiving to all. Let’s not forget to thank the Lord for all we have.

Sponsor-A-Family Sponsored by

Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Charities

Sponsor-A-Family is back for Christmas this year!

Catholic Charities have provided us five families to provide Christmas for. Each family has two to three members. Or you can sponsor one family member. Past experience shows that spending $50 - $75 per family member goes a long way toward granting many of their wishes. With all the bargains out there, it is amazing how much can be purchased (especially on Black Friday)! They ask for the gifts to be new and unwrapped. No gift cards please! Why not help our school and purchase gift cards from our Sharing program to purchase the gifts.

Gifts may be dropped off on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at Incarnation Church (5757 W. 127th St. Palos Heights, Il. from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Please contact JoAnne at 773-520-7454 or [email protected] to obtain a family! Thank you for your generosity.

The first of the public rituals celebrated in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the Rite of Acceptance into the order of Catechumens (for unbaptized Catechumens) and the Rite of

Welcome (for baptized adult candidates preparing to celebrate Confirmation and Eucharist in the Catholic Church). An important moment in the Rite is when each candidate is asked if they are ready to accept the Gospel Way of Life. Their affirmation is a public expression of their intention to follow the way of Jesus Christ. The candidates are also marked by the sign of the cross by our priest and their sponsors. With this ancient mark, they are claimed for Christ. On Sunday, Nov. 26, we will have our candidate join us at the 11:30 a.m. Mass to celebrate this rite. As the assembled Church, we celebrate this ritual by blessing our Inquirers, listening to them, praying for them, giving evidence of the spirit of our Christian community, inviting them into our hearts, and passing on to them our beliefs, traditions and all that we hold sacred and cherish. Please keep our Inquirer in your thoughts and prayers in the coming months. Welcome Candidate Nadia Garafolo.

PARISH LIBRARY NEWS "The Case for Christ: A Journalist's Personal

Investigation of the Evidence for Jesus," by Lee Strobel. This is no "holier than thou" book. It will appeal to guys for sure, because the author takes no prisoners. He once was an atheist, but the Holy Spirit won the battle thanks to a secret weapon called Grace. The author's search for truth about history's real life miracle man, Jesus, is surprisingly easy to read. Strobel stacks up the evidence as he cross-examines a dozen experts. It's a fantastic book for those away from the church, or for those in the pews who want answers to questions they were afraid to ask. Strobel has a journalism degree from the University of Missouri and a Master's from Yale Law School. He was also the award-winning legal editor of the Chicago Tribune. Find our "library nook" in Martyrs' Cry Room. Take a look and take a book, before or after Masses each weekend. For more info, call Terri, at (773) 239-1041.

Queen of Martyrs 5th and 6th Graders Enjoy Halloween Labs

Mrs. Creevy’s Science students worked in groups to explore the properties of Slime and to use their sense of smell. The 5th Grade students made slime and discussed the property of polymers. The students observed the slime turning from a liquid state to a solid state. They enjoyed participating in this “Ghoulish” Lab.

Mrs. Creevy’s Sixth Grade students participated in a “Smell” Lab. They were given “Jelly Belly” scented jelly beans. The students were asked to describe the candies shape, size, and color. The jelly beans were then cut open for the students to smell and try to guess the flavor. Some of the jelly beans used were rotten egg and sausage scented. Needless to say the students preferred the more

pleasant scented ones such as the vanilla and watermelon flavors!

The students were excited to take part in the Halloween Labs. They were wearing red on that day in observance of Queen of Martyrs “Red Ribbon Week!
