Fr. Marty’s Musings We call Jesus the Prince of Peace, so it can be disconcerting to hear him proclaim in today’s gospel, “Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” Although that seems to counter Christ’s image as a source of peace, he is giving us the real challenge to be willing to face conflict in working as disciples. If we truly follow Christ, we will not find universal acceptance. Jesus is not willing to appease what is wrong for the sake of avoiding conflict.

To fully follow our baptismal promises and live in the fire of the Spirit that we received in Confirmation calls us to courageously witness the Good News message. The waters of Baptism should give us the fortitude and the will to make waves. That means sharing our faith and challenging hatred, prejudice, injustice and other evils when we face them.

The tragic reality of the ongoing division that Jesus anticipated has left too many victims. Violence, especially involving guns, afflicts our cities in the all-too-random shootings to all-too-frequent killing sprees. The Melting Pot image of our nation struggles to find meaning at time of prominent nativism and anti-immigrant sentiment. Instead of protecting life, we imperil it by making abortion and assault weapons easy to obtain.

These are issues that we should regularly remember in our prayers but also in urging our representatives to action. There may not be simple solutions to the problems, and serious, honest debate about appropriate responses, but we should not be paralyzed to inaction because of the challeng-es.

The Chicago writer Finley Peter Dunne’s character Mr. Dooley commented satirically that the newspaper does everything, including comforts the afflicted, afflicts the comfortable. Christ’s message does too.

Fr. Marty Marren

August features various feasts in Mary’s honor. Last week we celebrated the Assumption. Wednesday, August 21, is the 140th anniversary of the Knock Apparition, when Mary, Joseph, St. John and the Lamb (representing Christ) appeared to poor parishioners in Mayo, not too far from where my mother and father lived. This Thursday, August 22, is the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin.

Prayer for Young Students Lord God, your Spirit of wisdom

fills the earth and teaches us your ways. Look upon our students, our children, our future.

May they know they are important to us and cared by us.

Let them find joy in knowledge and delight in new discoveries.

Help them to persevere in their studies and give them the desire to learn all things well.

Grant that students may share with their teachers and families alike

the wonders in following Jesus Christ; the way, the truth, and the life,

for ever and ever. Amen

Reflections from ignite 2019 Mission Trip

“Being my third year in Harlan, I thought I would know what to expect. However, this trip was extremely unique. My first year, I was absolutely terrified to come here and work for a week. On the worksite, I was anxious and hesitant to do much because I

didn’t want to mess anything up. The older kids who had been on the Mission Trip before helped push me to believe in myself and they taught me everything I needed to know.

“After that, luckily fell in love with this place. The next year I felt anxious again about trying new things because, again, I was afraid to fail. Luckily, I had those other teens who were more experienced to help me. This year, Like I said, was very different because as I got onto a new roof with a new group of teens I realized I didn’t have those older more experienced people with me. I was the older and more experienced teen. So I made it my goal to teach the newbies just as I was taught. I wanted to teach

them its okay to be clueless or anxious. I wanted them to know its okay to mess up because messing up is the best way to learn. I feel pretty accomplished with that goal this week, so with this being potentially my last Mission Trip I hope I was able to pass the torch to you young ins. When I go back home I hope I can teach others it’s okay to mess up, but don’t be afraid to try new things and keep trying.” —Pat

What a selfless way to brighten the day of other children, helping to put smiles on their faces and filling their hearts with hope and love. Great job girls!
