Queen of Martyrs Sunday Comparison—December 9, 2018

From the Desk of Fr. Chris... Third week of Advent

“Rejoice in the Lord always, I shall say again rejoice.” “Shout for joy. Be glad and exult with all your hearts. The Lord has removed the judgment against you. Fear not, be not discouraged! The Lord, your God, is in your midst;...he will renew you in his love….” The prophet Zephaniah sets the stage for the celebration today of Gaudete Sunday. On the third Sunday of Advent, the rose candle is lit. This Sunday is called Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete is a Latin word meaning “rejoice” This change from purple to pink signifies the transition of season from repentance to celebration.

My brothers and sisters, how much we need these encouraging words! Our world seems far broken and wounded than ever. Peace seems so elusive, strange diseases of all kinds, amid the bullying, lying, and abuses of all kinds by those in authority. Mass shooting of innocent souls, violence in our streets and homes have robbed us the peace of a good social life. Despair has led to family break-age and suicides. How dare the Prophet talk about joy? What is there to rejoice? Left to ourselves, our own efforts to move forward in life are often mired in doubt, fear, guilt and self-absorption. To combat the ugly scenario, some people are clamoring for stricter gun-control laws, more prisons, stiffer sentences for violent offenders, and more police in our streets. Yet, no matter how few guns we have, how many more jails we build or how many officers we deploy on our streets, nothing will change until a total spiritual renewal takes place in people’s lives and society.

Today God makes it known to us that he himself will rule his people. That he will not leave them at the mercy of the arrogance of their leaders and the pain and misery of sin, diseases and death. He will free them from all anguish.

The message of Paul’s letter to Philippians comes to us at the right time. Paul’s tone is remarkable when we consider the setting for the letter. Paul is writing from prison. He is an aging apostle writing to a beloved community of believers, encouraging them to rejoice because the Lord is near. God’s nearness should cause joy and peace. “Have no anxiety at all,” St. Paul says, “but in every-thing, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.” God is always near; we must always be joyful and with our kindness offer everyone witness of the closeness and care God has for everyone.

Filled with joy and peace, let us join John the Baptist, this time not at the Jordan River, but in our own families and churches and neighborhoods, witnessing God’s love by the love we extend to others. Prophets of his justice by our unfailing commitment to what is right, just, and good. Lamps reflecting the light of God’s mercy in our forgiveness of others. Harvesters of souls through our humble and dedicated servanthood. Invite a friend, a neighbor or a stranger to come and encounter the Lords joy. Invite those who feel distant from God and alone, those who have walked paths of life that have taken away from God. Invite those seeking forgiveness to come and experience the joy of total love and forgiveness. Invite those who see to know Jesus more deeply, those who struggle to find acceptance and love, invite them to come and experience the Lord who accepts us as we are. In him there is joy and fulfillment.

My friends, this season of grace in our Church will provide us all with countless opportunities to experience Christ’s forgiveness which fills us with the long awaited joy and fulfillment. Let us be attuned to the presence of Jesus as he comes to us through the welcoming embrace of faithful souls who are a part of the Church and you and I seek to live joyfully their faith in Jesus.

—Associate Pastor Fr. Chris Kituli

In today’s gospel, John the Baptist provides a very practical response when asked by people how to prepare for Christ’s coming. In simple words he advises them to share with the needy, treat people fairly, and be happy with what they have. How will you follow the words of John the Baptist during the coming week?

(Phil 4:4-5) “How kind is our Sacramental Jesus; He welcomes you at any hour of the day or night for His Love never knows rest. He is always gentle towards you.
