Man held for growing ganjaon terraceBy Our Staff Reporter
A police team led by inspector M. Thangaraj discov-ered 6-7 ft tall ganja plants growing in pots on theterrace of the house of Charles Edwin Jayaraj (40).Police seized the fresh plants and arrested him. Jayarajtold police that he had been growing the plants on histerrace for several months. During questioning, hesaid that he had been using the ganja leaves in his foodas it has medicinal qualities.
A police officer said, “People sprinkle the leaves onboiling sambar to get high. This is a common practicein many houses in and around Theni and Usilampatti.”Jayaraj was remanded to judicial custody.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that he had beenpresenting fresh ganja leaves to some of his friends.During questioning, Jayaraj said that he was notaware that growing ganja is an offence, adding that hehad never sold the leaves to anyone, said a policeofficer.
The issue came to light after someone posted pic-tures of the plants on social media. Subsequently, citypolice commissioner A. K. Viswanathan instructedofficials to search houses in several parts of the city.During one such search, police personnel in K. K.Nagar came across the plants.
Jayaraj, an unemployed mechanical engineer, liveswith his mother and sister in K. K. Nagar first sector.

The Chennai Corporation is to re-float tenders for the smartparking management and cycle-sharing system as each re-ceived only a single bidder when tenders were floated in Decem-ber last year.
To be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 4.2 crores, T. Nagar,Anna Salai, Anna Nagar, Guindy, Marina beach, Adyar,Royapuram and Washermenpet were initially identified asareas where the parking system would prove beneficial.
Similarly, the bicycle-sharing system, aimed at providinglast-mile connectivity from bus stops and railway stations inthe city, was to be taken up in Egmore, Mylapore, ThousandLights, Kamarajar Salai and Royapettah.

Tamil Cinema & Music - 85The Making of ‘Meera’ (1945)
The incognito visit of Akbar and Tansen to listen toMeerabai’ssoulful music and leaving behind as gift a bag of goldcoins bearingthe Mogul Royal Seal is a highlight of the Maraboutalein theplays in many languages like Telugu, and also thefilm.
The making of the movie ‘Meera’ is interesting and the ‘backstory’ (as they call it in Hollywood!) deserves to be told in length.
As a brilliant technician trained in Hollywood, Ellis R. Dunganbroughtin many creative, technical innovations never everbefore seen inIndian Cinema of that period.
Dungan shot a scene which created history in south Indianfilmtechnique. The girl Meera (Baby Radha, MSS’s step-daugh-ter) changesinto the young womanMeera (MSS) and the tran-sition is made with amelodious song sung by Baby Radha andMSS, ‘Nanda balaa ennmanalaaa...” When the change-overtakes place, there is a 45-secondfast-paced background or-chestral musical interlude as bridge as part ofthe song.
Normally such background musical interludes arealsorecorded along with the song in a recording studio longbefore thefilm shoot commences. But Dungan did not do so.Heshot the scene first and the change-over sequence consisted ofanumber of shots of the statue of Lord Krishna….lightedcandles with
flames flickering ...flowers on plates… prayerofferings….Krishna’sflute in the statue….and then a cut to aclose-up of MSS singing withgreat feeling and emotion, “HeyMuraleee Mohanaa….!” The shots werestaticand also on fasttrolley in close-up. (There were no ‘zoom lenses’ in 1944-1945!).Dungan edited them all by himself into arapidly-cut, fast-pacedsequence and then the sadly underrated buthighly talentedmusic composer S. V. Venkataraman scored thebackgroundmusic in rhythm with the shots in a recording theater. Theimpactwas ecstatic and brilliant. It was the first time that such atechnique was used in Indian Cinema. Even today, nearly after70 years, this sequence evokes admiration and is breathtak-ing!
(S.V. Venkataraman told this writer during the 1980s,“Randor, Ialmost went mad scoring music for that bit! In thosedays we had onlymono-channel recording and few mikes, notlike today. I had manyinstruments playingand the playerswere seated on the floor.Onlythe piano-man was given achair.It was hard work and took a wholeday! But the resultswere excellent as you can see. Only Dungan couldthink of sucha thing...! He was a wonderful man….a genius!”)
During his visit to Madras during the early 1990s, Dungantold this writerthat he was eager to meet his music composerVenkataraman. This writerconveyed his wish to SVV but thelatter refused to meet him for aninteresting reason. ‘Dunganhas seen me when I was a young man and was handsome. Itis now nearly 50 years later and I have grown old,infirm andwrinkled and have no wish for him to see me in this state!Lethim retain the memories of mine of 1940s!” When this replywasconveyed to Dungan he burst into a loud laugh and said,“That’s theold boy, Randor!”
Another experiment Dungan made in ‘Meera’ is also uniqueand few havedone it to this day in India. MSS was a woman ofexceptional beautyand charisma, radiating inner charm. Tocapture it all on camera andproject her ethereal beauty,Dungan made an experiment with hiscameraman, anothermovie camera wizard, Jiten Bannerjee. He had amould madeof MSS’s face and took shots of it from different angleswithvaried patterns of lighting. The shots were cut into framesandthose were studied repeatedly by Dungan and Bannerjee onscreen with aslideprojector. The best angles and lighting pat-terns wereselected and used whiled shooting the film. Conse-quently the close-ups of MSS in ‘Meera’ are captivating, evok-ing appreciation from even filmtechnicians of today. (This filmis in black and white.)
Other songs by MS in ‘Meera’ are ‘Kaatriniley varum geetham’,‘Enadhu ullamey’, ‘GiridharaGopala’, ‘Hey HareyDayalaa’,’Maraveney yenn naalilume’, ‘Maraindhakoondil’,‘Engum niraindhaayey’ (an eternally hauntingmelody, it has amale voice in the beginning and that’s S. V.Venkataramansinging),’Janardhanaa Jagannathaa’ and ‘BrindhavanathilKannan valarndha’ (a melodious chorus with MSS leading). (To be continued)

Gowtham built a miniaturemodel of ‘Sliding Platform’ forphysically challenged andsenior citizens that can be usedin railway stations.
Grilled by more than 18judges, Gowtham presentedhis views on the project and itsmerits if successfullyimplemented.
He has been selected toparticipate in the leadershipworkshop to be held at SriLanka in July.

Ananth of Saidapet on Jan. 21 for looting Rs.1 lakh worthvaluables like silver kavacham, lamps and gold jewels fromVembuli Amman Temple (junction of New Boag Road andSouth Usman Road, T. Nagar) on Jan. 20.
He was arrested by a police team led by Sekar (Inspector,Crime, R1 Mambalam Police Station) in his hideout in KannagiNagar and the jewels were recovered from him.
Ramesh, the senior priest of the temple, had lodged a complaintwith Mambalam Police.
According to the police, they found a dirty and torn lungidiscarded in the temple. The proprietor of a provision shop nearthe temple told the police that he had seen a beggar outside thetemple wearing the lungi. Further investigation led the policeto the doorsteps of Vedhachalm in Kannagi Nagar. Anotherbeggar named Narayanaswamy wanted in the case is still atlarge. Both the beggars were also identified as the robbers fromthe CCTV footage obtained from a shop located opposite thetemple. Vedachalam was remanded to judicial custody.

Sir, This refers to the death of an elderlywoman following a heart attack two days afterlosing Rs.90,000 in an online fraud.
It has been reported that the woman wasconned over phone and inadvertently made todisclose her bank account details by an un-known caller who impersonated the officer ofthe bank, Only when the bank staff called herup to check whether the transaction was genu-ine did the woman realize the fraud.
While this online fraud got reported in themedia, probably due to the death of the victim,many such cases go unreported and many fallprey to such fraudulent calls. Such frauds con-tinue to happen despite the frequent alertsfrom the banks to its customers not to disclosebank account/debit/credit card/password/OTPand pin details.
Not long ago, a caller who introduced himselfas the manger of my bank said my debit cardhad been blocked and sought its details tounblock it. Realizing the danger, I immediatelydisconnected the call.

Commuters haggle oversudden hike in bus faresBy Our Staff Reporter
The sudden midnight fare hike by 95 per centled to most commuters haggling withconductors and drivers of MTC buses.
The minimum fare in deluxe buses has beenincreased to Rs. 13 from Rs. 7, while expressbus fare has been fixed at Rs. 9 (Rs. 5). Theminimum fare in ordinary buses has beenhiked to Rs. 5. Daily wage earners, especiallyconstruction workers who travel long distancesdaily, are the most affected.
A commuter at T. Nagar bus terminus toldthis reporter that he works in a constructionsite in OMR and will have to shell out anadditional Rs. 40 per day after the fare hike. Hesaid that it puts an added burden of aroundRs.1000 a month which is not affordable.
With a fleet of 3,200 buses, MTC carriesabout 45 lakh passengers a day in Chennai cityand parts of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallurdistricts. The buses are operated on 833 routesfrom 33 depots.
While officials of MTC claim that more than50 per cent of the fleet is operated on ordinaryfares, it is learnt that less than 25 per cent ofordinary buses are operated in the city affectingnearly 75 per cent of commuters.

evening of Wednesday, Jan. 31.That will be the evening of Blue Moon, which means the
second full moon within a calendar month.‘Blue Moon’ is merely an idiomatic expression in English,
and it does not mean that the Moon turns blue on that day.‘Once in a blue moon’ means ‘rarely’ because it is not often
that there occur two full moons in a single calendar month.Ironically, there will be a Blue Moon in the forthcoming
March also, resulting in this supposedly rare event happen-ing twice within 65 days.
Another reason why Jan. 31 is special is that, in its ellipticorbit around the earth, the moon will be nearest to us onthat day, and will therefore appear nearly 14% bigger thanduring a normal full moon. So, apart from being a BlueMoon, it will also be a Big Moon.
Again, it is even rarer for a full lunar eclipse to occur ona Blue Moon night. Unlike in the case of a full solar eclipsewhen the sun gets totally dark, the fully eclipsed moon willstill be visible from the earth but will assume a reddishcolour because a part of the sunlight still reaches it via theearth’s atmosphere. Thus, you can also see a Blood Moonon that evening.
In Chennai, the moon will still be below the horizon whena partial eclipse starts, and will just be rising when the totaleclipse starts at 6.21 pm. The full Red Moon will be visibletill 7.37 pm, when the total eclipse ends and the moon startsemerging from the earth’s shadow.
The moon will be fully visible from 9.38 pm.
