The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Pastor’s Morsels & Tidbits

Happy New Year Hello...welcome to Flight #2019...We are prepared to take off into the New Year...Please make sure your Attitude and Blessings are secured and locked in an upright position...All self-destructive devices should be turned off at this time...All negativity, hurt and discouragement should be put away...Should we lose altitude during the flight, reach up and pull down a Prayer...Prayers will automatically be activated by Faith...Once your Faith is activated you can assist other passengers...There will be NO BAGGAGE allowed on this flight...The Captain (GOD) has cleared us for takeoff...Destination GREAT-NESS!!! HAVE A BLESSED NEW YEAR!!! Notes on the Scripture The celebration of the feast of the Baptism of the Lord concludes the Christ-mas season. In the Gospel reading, we hear how the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus and how God was “well pleased” with his “beloved Son.” The de-scent of the Spirit onto Jesus and the voice of God from heaven mark the fi-nal epiphanies of the Christmas season. This provides us a wonderful opportunity to pause for a moment and consider what our own individual baptisms mean to us. Is baptism just about getting to heaven or is there something far deeper behind this gift of water and the Holy Spirit? When Jesus was baptized, God told him he was his Son. When we are baptized, God claims us as his sons and daughters too. What does being baptized mean to you? Happy Anniversary to our Knights The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic fraternal service or-ganization. Founded by Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1882, it was named in honor of the explorer Christopher Columbus. Originally serving as a mutual benefit society to working-class and immigrant Catholics in the United States, it developed into a fraternal benefit society dedicated to providing charitable services, including war and disaster relief, actively de-fending Catholicism in various nations, and promoting Catholic education. We are very pleased to have our Council here at SFA. As they celebrate their 3rd anniversary I want to acknowledged all the members for their service. Our knights have conducted a variety of outreach as well as social events. This last year, large donations were made to the Sisters of the Servants of the Lord and the Military Chaplain’s Scholarship Fund. Also, they donated an ultrasound machine and our wonderful flag poll in front of the church. Please join me in congratulating our Knights for their great service!!!

AND

1:00 pm in the Niehaus Room ALL ARE WELCOME!

WHEN: Tuesday, January 15 at 7:00 pm WHERE: St. Francis of Assisi WHAT: Taizé is the name of a village in south-eastern France. This type of prayer originated in the early 1940’s. The founder, Brother Roger Schultz, was 25 years old. It was during World War II when he felt compelled to create a community where simplicity and kind-heartedness would be lived out. A one-hour prayer service using songs from Taizé is the experience of singing of refrains, hearing Scripture, praying, and being silent for short peri-ods of time. This prayer is for people of all ages, it is very meditative and moving. We invite you to come and experience God’s pres-ence in our lives. In this busy world, we need to nourish ourselves more and more through prayer, silence, song and on Christ Himself, who is the source of all grace and wisdom.

CARDINAL JOSEPH BERNARDIN SCHOOL JOB OPENINGS

P/T Pre-K Teacher Aide Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School is accepting applications for a part-time position (25-hours weekly) for a Pre-K teacher aide working with 3-year old and/or 4-year old children. Please email a cover letter, resume, and references to Mrs. Mary Iannucilli, Principal, at [email protected] Scrip Team - Sales The Cardinal Bernardin Scrip team has two open posi-tions. The work consists of filling scrip orders, selling scrip, and keeping accurate inventory of the scrip cards. (Scrip cards are essentially “gift cards.”) Skills include working with the public, along with creating spread-sheets and word documents. General bookkeeping skills are a plus. Applicants should be able to work 6-8 hours per week including 1 evening (alternate weeks) work. The majority of the work is done at CJB. During the pre-Christmas weeks, the team sells scrip at the neigh-boring parishes. If interested, please contact Corinna Pytel at 708-478-0710.

The “Angel Fund” Each year, across the nation, Catholic schools are recog-nized at their home parishes at weekend masses and with special events at school during “Catholic Schools Week.” This year, the celebration for our parish school, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School (CJB), will begin with liturgies at weekend masses on January 26 and 27. There will be an amazing Open House at CJB on Sunday, Janu-ary 27 from 1p-3p. (If you have never visited us, please make it a point to stop by and see your parish school! You don’t even have to have school-aged children to register. Just come visit us. You are welcome!) Then, throughout the week, special events will be held at CJB, culminating with a special school liturgy. As always, we celebrate the strong program of faith formation at CJB, our nationally twice-recognized blue-ribbon academics, and the selfless involvement of students and staff in a variety of service projects. Four years ago, CJB’s sponsoring parishes began a spe-cial collection known as the “Angel Fund.” This collection is taken up one weekend during the year at the start of Cath-olic Schools Week. The Angel Fund is meant to assist CJB’s parishioner families who may need a bit of financial help to assist them in sending their children to CJB. Any donation you are able to make is greatly appreciated. This special collection will take place the weekend of January 26 and 27. Thank you for your kindness.

I came that they may have life, and

have it abundantly.” JN 10:10

God calls us to himself. Xtreme Youth Ministry is a response to that call. We are united by our baptism, and live it out by doing our best to follow Jesus. We move beyond just the facts and talk about our hopes and dreams, our fears and failures. Our programs, and activities help fill the spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and physical needs of teens. By being involved in Xtreme Youth Ministry we hope to bring you to Je-sus who came so that we may live an abundant life. Contact Matt at [email protected] for information about how you can get involved.

for the seminarians in his cam. I lived in a cam with stu-dents. We met weekly to discuss our common life and focus on is-sues of particular concern. In addi-tion, we prayed to-gether. I very much en-joyed this responsi-bility. Looking back however, I could never do it again. The weekly meet-ing began at 10 pm. When my as-signment began, I was in my mid-thirties and the stu-dents in their mid-twenties. Late night gatherings were common. Gone are those days! As I began my 11th year 1989, I in-formed the rector that I would like to make 1988 – 89 my last year. He agreed.

AROUND FOR AWHILE By, Fr. Ed Upton

Sharing my previous assignments has tak-en more space than I anticipated. Guys “Around for a While” easily recall the past. In addition to my work as the director of the Deacon Internship, I was also a cam priest. Cam is a designation unique to Mundelein Seminary. The word cam is a shortened version of camarata which, as I under-stand, is an Italian word that means “walking group”. In the student residence building, each individ-ual room is located on a corridor, 4 corridors on each of the three floors. About 12 stu-dents live in each cor-ridor. The cam is composed of students from all years and various dioceses. A priest also has rooms in the corridor, “the cam priest”. He takes a pastoral role

I also requested to take a sabbatical at the end of the school year. With that per-mission, I made plans for a sabbatical. A student who lived in my cam was from South Africa and was scheduled to be or-dained in 1989. Since I was his cam priest, I was asked to be the seminary rep-resentative at his or-dination. The rector, representing the sem-inary, and another ordinandi from the same diocese was going. So together we planned an African journey. Since we were already going to South Africa, we de-cided to extend our African stay. We planned to visit Ugan-da and visit the par-ents of other students studying at Munde-lein. A Chicago priest, Fr. Tom McQuaid was in Kenya working with Maryknoll mis-

sionaries; and so we planned a visit with him. While in Kenya, we decided to take a Safari. This African excur-sion was the first part of my sabbatical. Af-ter that was complet-ed, I made plans to spend 6 weeks in the Holy Land. When I returned from sabbatical, I planned to meet with the Per-sonnel Board and ap-ply for a pastorate. My sabbatical plans were completed in April. Sometime in mid-April the rector ap-proached me. He said Cardinal Bernar-din would like me to remain on the faculty another year. I was surprised. I did have a choice to say no and leave as planned, but since I had no definitive plans post sabbatical, I said yes. While in my role as director of Intern-ships, I had a number of responsibilities dur-ing the summer, I asked if another fac-ulty member would carry out those tasks. I would shorten my Israel stay, return right before Labor

Day. The rector agreed. That was one of the best decisions I ever made. In the Archdiocese Pas-torates are open listed – a priest can apply at the time of listing. That was my plan after sab-

batical. However, The St. Francis post-ing was not made till 1990. If I had not stayed the extra year at Mundelein, I am sure I would have been appointed to another parish. What appeared as sacrifice, was a great gift.

10 ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI PARISH, ORLAND PARK 01/13/19

January, 2019 Dear St. Francis of Assisi Parishioner: You have been reading in our parish bulletin about Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School receiv-ing recognition as an “Exemplary High Performing School” by the U.S. Department of Education (meaning CJB is among the nation’s highest performing schools as measured by academic state as-sessments and nationally-normed tests in Reading and Mathematics). This is the second Blue Ribbon designation for CJB! Achieving Blue Ribbon status once is outstanding; to receive the designation twice is very rare! This second Blue Ribbon designation makes us prouder than ever to invite you to attend our Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School Open House on Sunday, January 27, from 1 – 3pm. Sponsored by four parishes (St. Elizabeth Seton, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Julie Billiart, and St. Stephen Deacon & Martyr), CJB is your Pre-K through 8th Grade Catholic parish school. CJB offers full-day and half-day 3-year-old and 4-year-old Pre-K and we continue to provide full-day Kindergarten, as well! Come and visit these classrooms as well as Grades 1-8. CJB is going on its 19th year and as we continue to grow, we have so much to be proud of! In addition to Blue Ribbon academic excellence, our faith-based daily religious instruction, shared communal prayer and weekly Mass contribute to shaping the spiritual lives of our students. Children are also encouraged to maxim-ize their God-given talents by participating in extra-curricular activities, from athletics to technology, and from choir to drama. In addition to these opportunities, our students volunteer their time in local community service projects. Our school patron, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, former Archbishop of Chi-cago, devoted his life to issues of social justice, peace and the sanctity of human life. It is important to us that his legacy remains a part of CJB. We have high expectations of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School students. We challenge them academically, and we strive to instill in them the Gospel values. CJB provides a loving and nur-turing environment in which children grow intellectually, spiritually, physically and emotionally. If this is the kind of school that you would like for your child, we look forward to welcoming you to our Open House on January 27. Sincerely, Rev. Artur Sowa, Pastor Mary Iannucilli, Principal P.S. Visit www.cjbschool.org to complete an online application for the 2019-20 school year. CJB will continue to accept applications until all spaces are filled. As a registered, practicing parishioner, your children are eligible for enrollment at an “in-parish” rate. (“Practicing” parishioners are Catholics who consistently attend Mass, send their children to Religious Education or Catholic school, and support their parish with time, talent, and treasure. This is an on-going expectation during years of enrollment at CJB. Use of parish envelopes is expected.)
