LENINGRAD 1941: THE BLOCKADE By D. V. PAVLOV Translated by JOHN C. ADAMS Foreword by HARRISON E. SALISBURY The most terrible months of the 900-day siege of Leningrad were those of the blockade, September 1941 to February 1942. Pavlov was in charge of food supplies for both civilian and military populations. He has here re- corded the gallant citizen resistance without distorting the story.- ".. this is the best and most important book on the war to be trans- lated from Russian."-HARRISON E. SALISBURY. Illustrated $4.50

THE RUSSIAN PEOPLE By V. TSCHEBOTARIOFF BILL "Mrs. Bill has applied her considerable experience as a university teacher of Russian in a new and valuable way . . . Her selection of short passages . . . from historical, cultural, and literary works.. . is likely to achieve its purpose for advanced undergraduate students in giving them varied proficiency in reading the language and developing their comprehension... of the country and the people." C. L. WRENN, Modern Language Review. In the revised and enlarged text, Mrs. Bill has included new chapters on the Russian icon, folklore, the theater, and has added details about recent poets and prose writers.

THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE TODAY By DENNIS WARD Designed for non-native students and teachers of Russian who already have knowledge of the language, this exposition of the structure of Russian includes chapters on phonology, orthography, and derivation. OSIP MANDELSTAM

The tragic life of the brilliant Russian poet Osip Mandelstam-a Warsaw-born Jew who died in a labor camp near Vladivostok in 1938- has recently begun to emerge. Still largely suppressed in the U.S.S.R., Russian language editions of some of his literary works have appeared in recent years in the West. Now, with the publishing of THE PROSE OF OSIP MANDELSTAM the English-speaking world is introduced to Mandelstam's major prose works and a remarkably moving reflec- tion of early 20th century Russia. Here is a sample of his unique prose style: "If one went outside on one of those icy Crimean nights and listened to the noise of footsteps on the snowless clayey earth, frozen solid like our northern wheel tracks in October, if in the darkness one groped with the eyes among the city's hills-populated sepulchres, but with extinguished lights-if one swallowed that gruel of smothered life, thickened with dense barking of dogs and salted with stars, one began to sense with physical clarity the plague that had descended upon the world, a Thirty Years' War, with pestilence, darkened lamps, barking of dogs and, in the houses of little people, appalling silence."
