1. BEPLANMaak ’n paar stukkies lap bymekaar. (Dit sal help as die lapstukkies by mekaar pas, en ook by die vertrek waar jy die voltooide projek wil uitstal.) Soek ’n klompie foto’s uit waar-van jy baie hou. Of druk mooi woorde uit om in die raam te sit.
2. TREK OORGebruik die lap wat jy verkies en lê dit op die tafel uit. Verf die dagboek/jaarbeplanner se buiteblaaie goed – voor en agter én op die rugkant – met Modge Podge (of Dala se Acrylic Gel Medium).Plaas die dagboek bo-op die lap
– en trek die boek se buitekant met die lap oor. Soos jy ’n skoolboek sou oortrek. Laat dit droog word.
Ek kan nie glo dat hierdie jaar weer op sy rug lê nie! Een van die dae koop ons dagboeke vir 2015. Ek voel altyd hartseer wanneer ek een jaar se dagboek vir ’n volgende jaar s’n moet verruil; ek wens só daar was ’n manier om nie my vorige lewensjaar se inligting sommer so weg te gooi nie. Kom ons kyk of ons ons 2014-notas kan bewaar. Verander jou ou dagboeke in pragtige fotorame.
3. HOEK-HAKIESGebruik karton waarvan jy hou. Jy kan dit met lap oortrek, of jy kan dit verf. Of, soos in die voorbeeld, nét so gebruik. Knip ’n reep af, so tussen 1cm en 2cm breed.Vou die hoek-punt oor, soos jy ’n driehoek sal begin. Vou die res van die lint oor in ’n spieël-beeld-driehoek (soos in die voorbeeld) en knip die res van die strook af. Dit is jou eerste hoek-hakie. Vou nou nóg drie. Herhaal die proses vir die hoe-veelheid dagboek-fotorame wat jy gaan maak.
(pasop vir gom aan jou vingers!). Laat die gom droog word – dit neem gewoonlik net ’n paar minute.
4. MEET EN PLAKPlaas die prente of foto’s op die oorgetrekte boeke, en trek die vier hoeke af met ’n potlood. Plak die agterkant van die hakies met Superglue (of “clear glue”) aan die oorgetrekte boek.Druk die hoekies mooi vas
5. KLAAR! Wanneer die gom droog is, skuif die foto’s se hoeke in die hoek-hakies in.En, siedaar! Jy het sopas ’n pragtige staanraam met ’n ou dagboek/jaarbeplanner gemaak.

24 fat juicy prawns6 Tbs olive oil1 onion, chopped½ red pepper, diced½ yellow pepper, diced700 g ripe tomatoes, roughly chopped¾ tsp dried oregano2 sticks celery, finely chopped4 cloves garlic, chopped1 chilli, chopped½ glass white winesalt and pepper, to taste2 Tbs parsley, chopped1 Tbs dill100 g feta, crushed12 black olives • Devein the prawns and trim the feelers, but keep the heads and shells on.• Heat the olive oil in a saucepan and fry the onion and peppers until
they are translucent. • Add the tomatoes, oregano, celery, garlic, chilli and white wine, and cook until the tomatoes are reduced and thick. Season to taste.• Preheat the oven to 180 °C. Spoon the sauce into an oven-proof dish suitable for serving, stir in the herbs and tuck in the prawns. Dot with feta and olives, and bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and rest for a few minutes before serving.• Serve with a mixed salad and chunks of freshly-baked bread.
We had a delicious meal in Glyfada on the quayside of a little harbour. We sipped chilled wine while we waited for our lunch order to be taken and watched the yachts bobbing up and down on the gentle
ripples of the water. When we asked the waiter what he would recommend, he told us we had to have the baby calamari, deep fried white bait and Yiovvetsi. “What is Yiovvetsi?” I asked. He described a dish of big, fat, juicy prawns with feta and tomato sauce, baked till just done and said that we had to try it. Now this is not a combination that I would necessarily choose – seafood and cheese – but the way he described it made my mouth water, so we ordered it. I’m so glad we did. I’m still not sure if I got the name right, but I really don’t care !

Ons is baie trots op Paul Ellis en Rochelle Pienaar wat die afgelope naweek aan die KFC Gemengde Dub-bels Tennistoernooi by Laerskool Mikro deelgeneem het. Die nefie-niggie kombinasie het stof in die ander skole se oë geskop en die toernooi loshande gewen! Baie geluk julle twee!

Elkeen van Laerskool Eikestad se 28 klasse het in September saamgewerk om die aarde te red van verwoesting. Van superhelde tot monsters het hul deel gedoen in die groter verhaal van PROJEK PIZZA-OOND. Die konsert het vir 7 aande vol sale gelok en baie vermaak verskaf vir kinders en ouers.

Tydens die afgelope Septembervakansie, het 50 Louwtjies vier ongelooflike dae op die Oranjerivier spandeer. Onder leiding van Beau Schoeman en Amanzi Trails, het die groep gou ervare roeiers geraak wat die stroomversnellings met gemak
hanteer het. Francois Marais en Daniela Di’Miao is deur die gidse en personeel aangewys as die “Rivier-Louwtjie” vir 2014. Volgende jaar maak Laerskool Hendrik Louw weer so!
Die Graad 7-span van Hendrik Louw het ‘n welverdiende tweede plek uit bykans 20 laerskole behaal tydens die Spring Mathematics Olympiad, aangebied deur Laerskool Panorama. Die Graad 6-span het ‘n vyfde plek behaal.
Congratulations to Jo-Bert van Deventer in Grade 5A1, who came first in the Cami Speed Challenge which took place at the N1 City, Goodwood on the 18th October. Jo-Bert had 451 sums correct in 400 seconds and walked away with a brand new laptop - the sought after first prize.

Jaarlikse Kunsklubuitstalling “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” - E. Degas Die jaarlikse kunsklubuitstalling was voorwaar ‘n lus vir die oog. Honderd agt en negentig kunsklublede het vanjaar aan die kunsklub behoort. Elke leerder se kunswerke is uitgestal en ouers het die geleentheid gehad om op die leerlinge se kunswerke te bie.

Sestien afsonderlike seuns- en dogterspanne het aan die gesogte toernooi deelgeneem. De Hoop se spanne het puik gevaar. Die seunspan het tweede geëindig en die dogterspan vierde. Ons wag almal op GodotDie Paul Roos-toneelgroep het dié week op 27 en 28 Oktober gesorg vir nóg ’n eerste in die skool se geskiedenis: die groep het die heerlike lenteweer aangegryp en ’n buitelugopvoering in die skool se nuut-opgetooide Hoofgebouvierkant gehou. Die ligging het uitstekend gewerk; die beligting, decor en toneelspel was van hoogstaande gehalte en die piekniekatmosfeer informeel en ontspanne.Die aand se verrigtinge het met twee eenmanvertonings deur onderskeidelik Luke White (’n item uit Monster in die gang) en Thys Sutherland (’n Jan Spies-storie) begin.Die hoofvertoning van die aand, WAG, het daarop gevolg. Hierdie stuk is gebaseer op die toneelstuk Waiting for Godot deur Samuel Beckett. Dit gaan oor twee mans, Didi (Luke White) en Gogo (Thys Sutherland), wat wag op ’n misterieuse man genaamd Godot. Terwyl hulle onder ’n boom sit, kom Pozzo (Hardus van Staden) en sy slaaf, Lucky (Lieb Loots), op hulle af. Die gehoor leer gou vir Pozzo ken as wreed en arrogant, en Lucky kom miserabel en bejammerenswaardig, dog effens onvoorspelbaar voor. Die toneelstuk spreek die absurde aan deur te speel met tyd en te wys op die toevalligheid en lukraakheid van die lewe. Dit probeer uitwys hoe die mens, in sy poging om die vraag “Wat is die sin van my bestaan?” te beantwoord, sy lewe met allerhande afleidings en vermaaklikhede vul en só as’t ware wag op ’n “Godot” – wat natuurlik nooit sy verskyning maak nie. Die aand is afgesluit met ’n uitvoering deur die sanger en liedjieskrywer, Paul Roos Old Boy Gerald Clarke.
Die toneelgroep het vanjaar besonder goed gevaar en ’n groot verskeidenheid medaljes by verskillende toneelfeeste verower.

’n Kykie na die teater van die absurde – en na die lewe Simon Brand (Graad 9)
Paul Roos se voorste tennisspeler, Jan-Louis Maritz, is verlede naweek by die Grey/ABSA-Tennistoernooi as die beste nommer 1- speler aangewys. Die eerste tennisspan het ook uitstekend vertoon en tweede geëindig teen ’n baie sterk span van Grey College. Die eerste span is verteenwoordig deur Jan-Louis, Weyers Meintjes, Christian van der Wath, Gerbrand Smit, Jéan Smit, Hannes Vorster en Ivan van der Merwe. Paul Roos moes Paarl Boy’s High, Waterkloof en Pretoria Boy’s High in hulle groep wen om na die semifinaal deur te dring.
In die oorkruis-semifinaal het hulle ’n goeie oorwinning teen die taai span van St. Stithian’s behaal voordat hul die volgende dag letterlik sweet en bloed op die tennisbaan agtergelaat het: ’n spesiale woord aan Weyers Meintjes vir sy deursettingsvermoë om aan te hou speel nadat hy ’n stuk van Grey College se tennisgrond gekoop het en in die proses byna sy lip afgeskryf het. Baie dankie aan spanbestuurder en afrigter, mnr. Jacobus Swanepoel, vir sy opoffering en moeite met die seuns. Mag die eerste tennisspan aanhou hard werk en voortbou op hierdie vertoning.

Niemand het verwag dat De Wet Spies nie by Dinsdag se JAM-byeenkoms sou wees nie, maar hy die beste van redes gehad. (JAM staan vir Jesus and Me) Dié Suid Afrikaanse sendeling, is ʼn paar dae voor sy praatjie by JAM in Suid-Soedan gearresteer en in die tronk aangehou. Die rede vir sy arrestasie is ʼn komplekse saak, maar wat ons wél weet is dat dit met die Suid-Soedanese regering se wette rondom hulle mediabeleid te make het. Gelukkig kon De Wet twee dae later in ʼn volgepakte Japie Krige van sy ervaringe vertel. Suid-Soedan het in Julie 2011 onafhanklik geraak as gevolg van ʼn vredesverdrag in 2005 wat Afrika se langste burgeroorlog beëindig het. Die meerderheid van die Suid-Soedanese mense het in Januarie 2011 by ʼn referendum besluit om weg te breek van Soedan, en om sodoende Afrika se jongste land te vorm. In Desember 2013 het burgeroorlog tussen die regering en die rebelle uitgebreek en duisende mense is dood. Daar heers veral konflik weens oortuigings aangaande geloof en ras. Die gevolg hiervan is dat die land tot ʼn ekonomiese stilstand gekom het – iets wat miljoene mense in armoede gelaat het. Te midde van hierdie gekompliseerde omstandighede in Suid-Soedan het De Wet en sy vrou, asook ander lede van die Free Voice Media House, vir ongeveer twee jaar sendingwerk daar
gedoen. DeWet se organisasie is egter deur die Suid-Soedanese regering as onwettig geklassifiseer. Die inligting oor sy tronkstraf is deur die Suid-Soedanese regering gesensor. Hy is in hegtenis geneem en deur die owerhede ondervra. Ná vyf lang dae in die tronk is hy deur die VN uit die land begelei en na Suid-Afrika gedeporteer. DeWet het by die JAM-byeenkoms van 23 Oktoberop ʼn inspirerende manier vir Paul Roosers van sy ondervindinge vertel. Hy word op die oomblik nie in Suid-Soedan toegelaat nie, maar hy het gesê dat hy sy bes sal doen om terug te keer om die mense van Suid-Soedan te kan aanhou bedien.

Gedurende ’n reis saam met haar ouers deur die Klein Karoo, vier jaar gelede, het Carli Koch ’n visie gekry om ’n glimlag op minderbevoorregte kinders se gesigte te sit – en watter beter tyd om dit doen as Kersfees?Verlede jaar is ongeveer 1 200 oorgetrekte skoenbokse, gevul met geskenkies, oorhandig aan kinders by omliggende skole in die Klein Karoo. Dit is ’n aktiewe projek wat elke jaar groei. Skole en sakeondernemings in
die Helderberg-kom neem ook jaarliks deel. Societas by Paul Roos skool beplan om hierdie jaar nie minder nie as Kersbokse te skenk. Marinda, Carli se ma, moedig almal aan wat kan gee om deel te raak van die projek. “Wie beter as jy?” Ons, wat in meer bevoorregte skole is, vergeet soms watter groot verskil iets kleins soos selfs ’n tandeborsel in iemand se lewe kan maak. Kom ons hou aan om ’n verskil te maak.

SAICA Business Development Game CompetitionFive grade 10 and five grade 11 Accounting learners from Hottentots-Holland High School took part in the SAICA Business Development Game Competition. The HHH team achieved the third position. Sixteen different schools participated and HHH has won R3 000.
1965 Matrics came to visitSome of the 1965 Matrics came to visit their alma mater – H o t t e n t o t s - H o l l a n d High School. They had lunch in the archives. Carol organised this in celebration of Lindy Rivett’s (Lake) visit from Melbourne in Australia. Jetske and Viola are living in Somerset West, Lesley is living in Observatory and Carol is living in Gordon’s Bay.

Somerset College Acknowledges Top AchieversSomerset College held its annual Awards Evening earlier this month where students were acknowledged for their notable academic achievements and exceptional contribution to school life. The Head’s Award, which is made to Grade 12 students who have shared their talent meaningfully with the College Community and by so doing have made the College a better place for their having been here, was awarded to Tim Offer, Lara du Plessis, Jason Raubenheimer, Sasha Tinelli, Nicolé Smith and Stephanie Austin. A number of Grade 12 students were acknowledged for their outstanding contribution to school life. They are Chris Goudvis, Jordan Sher, Nicola Sloane, Jade

PrysuitdelingVrydag, 17 Oktober, het die prysuitdeling van HS Strand in die Stadsaal plaasgevind. By hierdie geleentheid is daar ook afskeid geneem van die Matriekklas van 2014.

Radikale Redenaarsfees Ansela Burger het aan die Nasionale finaal van die Radikale Redenaarsfees deelgeneem. Sy het die Wes-Kaap op Saterdag 18 Oktober te HS Garsfontein in Pretoria verteenwoordig.
Matriekafskeid 2014Op 3 Oktober 2014 was dit weer sulke tyd. Die aand waarna elke seun en dogter uitsien al vandat hulle hul skoolloopbaan begin het, het uiteindelik sy verskyning gemaak. Die Maskerbaltema was ‘n reuse sukses.
Kersboom ProjekDie hoogtepunt op die Ti amo-kalender is beslis die kersboomprojek in die vierde kwartaal. Almal het net een doel voor oë gehad en dit was om ʼn kerspakkie vir elkeen van die 185 inwoners van die Zandvliet-versorgingsoord.
Met 60 leerders in ʼn bus kon ʼn mens die opwinding aanvoel. By Zandvliet was die inwoners ook al van vroeg af gereed vir die kerspartytjie. Die partytjie het begin met die Kersspel onder die ervare leiding van Marilene Blom.
