Die inwoners in Jasminestraat, Sercor Park weet nie hoe die brandop die vullishoop ontstaan het nie. Dit is hoe die toneel gelyk het ná die vuur geblus is.

City wants to legislatealternative smoking devicesTheCityofCapeTownwilles-calate its efforts this year forlegislativeclarityonthewidearray of alternative smokingdevices and habits that havebecome commonplace inSouth Africa.Earlier this year, City
Healthsolicited legalopinionfrom the National Depart-ment of Health about the useof e-ciga-rettes.This con-
tinues to be agrey area, not only inSouth Africabut aroundthe globe, and is cur-rently not provided for in theTobacco Control Amend-ment Act.Ongoing research into
hookahpipesor“hubblybub-blies” as the devices are com-monly known, indicates thatthey are decidedlymore dan-gerousthansocietalattitudessuggest.The most recent study in
the United States of Americafound that 39% of teens andyoung adults who had previ-ously smoked hookah pipeswent on to smoke cigarettes.“Hookah pipes are very
popular in Cape Town, notjust among adults, but alsochildren, because there is aperception that the flavouredtobacco is somehow notharmful,” said the City’sMayoralCommitteeMember
for Health, Councillor Bene-dicta van Minnen.“Tobacco is tobacco, no
matter what the flavour. Weneed to be more mindful as asociety about the burdenwe’re placing on the health-caresystem. IntheCapeespe-cially, we have very high lev-els of TB and other respirato-ry diseases and sowe need to
make everyeffort to com-bat those, in-cluding pre-ventionthrough re-sponsiblepersonalchoices.”CityHealth
has met with researchersfrom both the University ofCape Town and the Universi-ty of the Western Cape. Theconsensus is that while re-search is not definitive, smoking hookah pipe isharmful. Researchers are al-so in agreement that nicotineremains one of the most ad-dictive substances, especial-ly for young people.“I will be raising the issue
with thenational healthmin-ister to push for legal clarityon the use of hookah pipesand e-cigarettes.“I amnotnecessarilypush-
