How to avoid hijackingIn light of the series of hijacking that havetaken place in the Helderberg recently, theHelderberg Gazette spoke to the Strand Po-lice to establish what motorists can do tominimise the risk of being hijacked.

Nireshni Joseph, spokesperson for theStrand Police, had the following advice formotorists:

)Avoid stopping in remote places, saidJoseph, and always make sure to park yourvehicle in well-lit areas.

)Joseph added that if a stranger approa-ches your vehicle and wants to talk to youwhile you are inside your vehicle, do notopen the window more than 5cm. This isenough space to have a conversation andto avoid being attacked.

)If you feel that something looks suspi-cious, rather be rude and drive away thanengagewiththeperson/people.Avoidtalk-ing to strangers.

)Try to limit your trips at night andwhere possible, try to take someone along-with you.

)If possible, vary your daily travel rou-tes as this is a wise way to avoid havingcriminals knowing your routine.

)Hijackers might stage a minor acci-dent so they can get your attention and ap-proach your car, said Joseph. Always be

warywhenassistingbrokendownvehiclesor car accident victims. Phone the policefirst.

)Joseph stressed that “your life is morevaluable than your possessions, do not re-sist, especially if the thief has a weapon.”

)A lift club limits the risk of becominga victim of a hijacking. Criminals are lesslikely to attack a motorist when there arepassengers in the car.

)Joseph advises residents not to givestrangers a lift.

)A gear lock is an affordable and a veryeffective anti-theft device,” said Joseph.

)If possible, put a mirror up on the frontwall of your garage to see if someone is fol-lowing you into the garage, suggests Jo-seph.

)Do not open your garage doors beforeyour gates are closed behind you.

)Always store luggage and other valua-bles in the boot of the car, where they areout of sight and not visible in the car.

)Never leave keys in your car’s ignitionand always lock your doors and close yourwindows when getting out of your vehicle, even if you will be away for a short while.

)Always have your keys ready in yourhand as you approach your car, especiallyif they are difficult to find.

Not reporting childabuse is a crime

As someone who is petrified of germs,I rarelymake use of public bathrooms. But about a week ago mother naturecalled and I had no choice but to usea bathroom in a local shopping centre.Whilst in my cubicle, trying my ut-

mostnot tomakephysical contactwithanything around me, I overheard aconversation between a mother andher child in a cubicle nearby. The child asked her mother, “Mom-

my, does daddy touch you there?” I im-agined the child pointing to some partof her mother’s body as she watchedher mother use the toilet. “Ja,” she re-plied.“Daddy touches me there too some-

times,” said the child.I froze.I tried to convince myself that she

was talking about hermother’s arm orface or anything, anything but her pri-vate parts.“I know,” the mother said, “but you

mustn’t tell anybody that,” she told thechild firmly.Thatwasit. Iknewwhatwashappen-

ing, and what the child was trying tocommunicate to her mother, her pro-tector.I got myself together as quickly as

possible and planned to catch the pairbefore they left the bathroom.Needless to say, as I burst out of the

bathroom, I could not see any motherand child anywhere in the shoppingcentre. I walked around for ages, look-ing foranyonewhomatchedwhat Ihadheard. But I found no one.It is a crime in South Africa to not

report child abuse of any form if youknow about it.If youare ever approachedbya child

who tries to confide inyouabout some-thing that has happened to them, takethemseriously and report it as quicklyas you can to your nearest police sta-tion. As adults it is our responsibilityto protect our youth, the leaders of to-morrow, from harm.

Heidi and Hali, an unexpected gift and blessingCASSY VAN EEDEN

“No, I won’t give up. I’m here tostay and make the difference thatI can make.”

These are the lyrics of SomersetWest resident Heidi Naude’s favour-ite song.Heidi’s name is synonomous in the

Helderberg Gazette as being a trusteefor the Hali Trust, a community out-reach organisation in the Helder-berg. So Helderberg Gazette decidedtogetunderherskinandfindoutwhothe lady in the neon green t-shirt is.Heidi moved to the Western Cape

from Namibia - where she grew up -when she was 18, to pursue her stud-ies in clothing and food. Soon after-wards she met her husband Martin, and after six years of dating weremarried and together decided that

Heidi’s full-time job would be a stay-at-home mother for their children.Andso,whenpregnantwiththeirsec-ond child, Heidi left her career in thecatering industry to look after theirchildren.Whilst pregnant with their second

child “our miracle,” she called him,Heidi became dangerously ill with avirus that could have been lethal forherbaby.“WearesoluckythatJanielwasonlyborndeaf inoneearandthatthat is all that was wrong with him,”Heidi said.As her children began to grow up

Heidi prayed that she would be ableto find a job so that she could “dosomething to earn a little bit of mon-ey.” And sure enough, she was em-ployed by a toy company for twoyears.Heidi describes these two years as

“the last puzzle piece ofmy life being

put together.”It was during

these two yearsthatshe“realisedthe massive im-pact that itemssuch as mascotscan have on chil-drenandtheired-ucational devel-opment,” shesaid. When her fa-

ther passed awayin2008,Heidiwasfortunateenoughto inherit somemoney. It was then that she and her hus-

band came up with the idea of start-ing a trust. Not long after that, Heidihad amascot designed andmanufac-tured and the Hali Trust was born.

A close friend ofHeidi’s - who alsochose the namesof her children -came up with thenameHali for themascotbecause itmeant “unex-pected gift andblessing,” whichisnowtheorgani-sation’s slogan.Heidi could not

have began to im-agine the pro-found impactthatHali themas-

cot would have on the communitiesthat she works with. Her face beams with pride as she

talks about all the children that cameforward and told someone that theywere being abused, after attending

the talks that Hali gives in variouscommunitiesaboutsexualandphysi-cal abuse.“Hali Trust gave me an identity,”

saidHeidi, “it gaveme a purpose. It’shere,” she said as she puts her handover her heart.Although both Heidi and Hali

Trust have faced endless obstaclessince its formation,Heidi is adamantthat nothing will stop her from giv-ing, “I won’t give up,” she said, “I’llnever give up.”Readers can support theHali Trust
