No stitch too intricate for Frazer and crewDELIAH BRINKHUIS

KK Kaka in Nomzamo, likemany other small businesses,is run froma shipping contain-er.

It can easily be overlooked inthe hustle and bustle of SimonStreet.Owner Frazer Kafumlom fol-

lowed his dream and started thesewing business in 2012.His journey thus farwas not an

easy one, but he pushed throughand today has a well-known es-tablishment.Over the years he has roped in

his brother and cousin, LukaSimimzsi and Davie Loiwondeand established a well-knownoutlet which is frequented by lo-cals.Kafumlom is originally from

Malawi, where life in the town ofNkotakota was hard. They remember days of toiling

under a blazing sun as fishermenand farmers, as jobs in Malawiwere few.“No job was too humble as it is

a means to survive,” says Loi-wonde.With little skills their journey

towards success could not takeoff.“My older brother told me I

would have a better life as a tai-lor,” Kafumlom recalls. He stepped towards his dream

and started training with a localwherehegainedhands-onexperi-ence.For Kafumlom, the road to per-

fecting the craft was long andthere were many days when hewanted to throw in the towel andwalk away from his dream.“I had to learn how to sew in

a straight line first, and startedoff seaming items,” he recalls. From here he was tasked to

mend clothes and a year later hewas the proud creator of his firstclothing item – a skirt.A better life was beckoning on

the distant horizon. He packedup, left behind his family and theonly life he had known for 26years, to come to South Africa. Here his sewing skills landed

him a job in a clothing factory inObservatory,wherehemadeany-thing from t-shirts to curtains. He longedtworunhisownbusi-

ness andafter a fewyearshe rent-ed a shipping container and cour-ageously opened his own one-

man business, not far from KKKaka’s current premises.

Businesswentwell and soonhewas able to buy his own (bigger)container and move. He askedLoiwonde to join him, and laterSimimzsi.

Since then, the three of themhavebeen filling theirdaysdress-ing up locals.

No job is too challenging andthey never turn anyone away.

The trio’s talents are endlessand thewalls of the container arecovered in rows of impeccablymade clothing items. Their bestsellers arewomen’s tights, whichensure a steady workflow and in-come, while the demand for com-missioned work like traditionalclothes, formal suits for men andwomen, and choir cloaks are alsoreceived.

Alterations are also done, andshould you want to spruce upyour home, curtains can bemadetoo.

“Sometimes business is slow, but there’s always something todo,” says Kafumlom.

“I am happy... this has been ablessing from God,” he says.

Frazer Kafumlom can be con-tacted on 073 681 6841.

‘Parliamentin shambles’The State of the Nation Address (SONA) lastThursday sawmembers of the EFF party forci-bly removedbyparliamentary securityandpo-lice and the DA leaving the assembly.President Jacob Zuma’s address started an

hour later than scheduled after the meetingwas disrupted by EFF members, who wantedtoknowwhenZumawouldpayback themoneywhichwas spent on his private Nkandla estatein KwaZulu-Natal.

Malibongwe Mlaswa from AsandaVillage says this year’s State of theNation Address was chaotic. “TheEFF has a right to ask the question, which the president has to answer, but it was not the right time to doso. Our country is a laughing stockaround the world and it will havea negative effect on internationalinvestments.”

“As a public figure the president hasto disclose when taxpayers’ moneyis used,” says Adriaan Engelbrechtof Strand. He, however, feels thatthecountrywill survive this, asmanyother crises before.

Jeanette Pentzvan Strand sê:“Die gedrag inparlement wasonvanpas. Diestaatsredemoes “sum-mier” gestopword. Ek is ookteleurgestelddat die presi-dent nie ’n op-lossing vir dieelektrisiteit-kri-sis het nie.”

John Myers fromStrand: “It was ashambles anddisgraceful – it’snot theway to runparliament, which should bea respectedplace. This up-roar will harm in-vesting,”

Maryke Fourie sê: “Dit was heelte-mal onaanvaarbaar en plaas dieland in ’n verleentheid. Mense nawie die res van ons opkyk om veran-dering en verbeteringe teweeg tebring, moet saamwerk in stede vanmekaar aanval. Die situasie moesbeter hanteer gewees het – dis ietswat ek nooit weer wil sien nie.”

Randall Brown sê: “Politieke leiersmoet hande vat en saam werk omons land teverbeter.Dieparlemen-têre sitting Donderdagaand wasongedissiplineerd.”

Linda Kwangi from Sir Lowry’s Passsays the EFF set the wrong exampleby asking the question about thepaying back of money during thestate of the nation address, as shefeels it was not the right platform.“It was unorderly; this will cost thecountry the loss of investors,” shesaid. Controlled burn atHelderberg ReserveTheCitywould liketoadvise thecommuni-ty that there will be three separate pre-scribed burns within the Helderberg Na-ture Reserve during which an area of ap-proximately 49ha will be burnt.

The actual date of the burn is dependent onweather conditions andwill be communicatedto the surrounding communities once con-firmed.The controlled burnwill affect residents liv-

ing along Hillcrest Road, Ridge Lane, Moun-tainRoad,UpperMountainRoad,VersterAve-nue, Louw Avenue, Faure Crescent, and Hen-driksz Road, as well as residents of ErinvaleEstate.HelderbergNatureReserve staffwill ensure

that theprocedure is conducted safely and effi-ciently, with the assistance of staff from otherCity reserves and the City’s Fire and RescueService. For safety reasons, the reserve willtherefore be closed to the public on the daysof burn.“Inoureffortstoensurethesafetyofourresi-

dampen gardens as a further precautionarymeasure.Thecontrolledburnformspartofourefforts to build a sustainable and environmen-tally diverse city for our future generations.”The City can assure residents that the re-

quired precautionary plans have been imple-mented, including obtaining burning permitsfrom the City’s Air Pollution section, Fire and

Rescue Services, and the subcouncil. In addition, the required pre-inspection of

the area has been conducted by Fire and Res-cue Services.Fire-breaks have also been maintained and

widened where necessary, and firefightingequipment and fire hydrants have been testedto ensure it is working.“Helderberg Nature Reserve conserves one

of the largest remaining areas of vulnerableCapeWinelands shale fynbos, thus prescribedburns are crucial for the management of thisarea as fire plays a fundamental role in its life-cycle. The areas requiring burning have enor-mous restoration potential and this burningwill allow management to restore the area toits original natural vegetation,” Van der Mer-we explains.“We would like to thank residents for their

understanding and cooperation, as this con-trolled burn forms an important part of the re-serve’s restoration plan, which includes usingfireasamechanismtostimulateseedgermina-tion aswell as reduce fuel loads, which in turnreduces the risk of wild fires.”Helderberg Nature Reserve, situated on the

OPERATION CLEAN-UP: Local proportional representative councillor Chantal Cerfontein (second fromleft) is on a mission to rid Rusthof of illegal dumping spots. “The community needs to take ownershipof their neighbourhood and help keep the Strand clean. The City of Cape Town’s Solid Waste Departmentis working extremely hard in these areas to ensure cleanliness, especially because of the health risksassociated with illegal dumping. We must therefore be vigilant and bring those who dump illegallyto book,” she says. Cerfontein recently accompanied Solid Waste Department workers on their rounds. To report illegal dumping or sewerage blockages, phone the City’s call centre on 0860 103 089.

Eskom needs introspectionEskom needs introspectionWeallpaid–andwillpay–veryharsh increases on our elec-tricity bill for a certain period. The reason forwarded byEs-

komwas to provide themwiththemeanstoinvestinaddition-al power generating plants– since their last problem in2008.Eskom,beinganationalenti-

ty, doesn’t need to accumulatethe money before investing –theyare fullyentitled toask fora loan, especially when theneed is high.Did they invest adequately

or did they simply distributethe additional incomebetweentheir management and inves-tors?Since it is customary toreact

onlywhenthepaw-pawhitsthefan in Africa – hence never do-ing any preventative mainte-nance – Eskom is henceforthwaiting until some plants aredeficient to handle the repairs. Is this the way a national

body serves its clients or putsits clients at risk?I have been asking the City

ofCapeTown toanswer the fol-

lowingquestion: “WhatdidEs-kom invest after its last powercutting emergency some yearsago?” But this was to no avail.Certainly Eskom is now fi-

nally providing power shed-dingschedules,statingreasonsof their need, providing lots ofreasons for their verynegativeaction towards the nationaleconomy, butnever giving anyindicationoftheirinvestmentsfor increasing power supply. Is investing millions in coal

extraction in natural reserveareas the best solution whenweare lackingpowerplants? Istheir answer that we will haveto wait for several years, theright one?So we have to brace our-

selves for long periods of loadshedding. What would they do if all

their customers decided to cuttheir electricity bills by half?It would perhapsmake them

thinkwitha littlemorehumili-ty and look for better immedi-ate actions.

Meng or-ganiese kompos by die grond in.

Joint drive to registerECD centres in the CapeThe City of Cape Town and the provincialgovernment are joining forces to reducethe number of unregistered Early Child-hood Development (ECD) centres in thecity.

Theregistrationdrivehasbecomeanannu-al occurrence and the aim this year is to helpat least 100 ECD centres become compliantfor registration by the end of June.Having started on 11 February, officials

will host 26 information sessions for ECD op-erators across the city, running until Thurs-day 11 June.Currently, there are an estimated 482 un-

registered ECDs in Cape Town.Bynational legislation, ECDcentres are re-

quired to registerwith the provincialDepart-ment of Social Development. To register, they must meet the norms and

standardssetout in theChildren’sActof 2005.Once registered, the facilities qualify for sub-sidies determined and administered by theprovincial government. In addition, the Social Development De-

partment plays anoversight role, monitoringthe compliance of ECDs and is empoweredto cancel an ECD’s registration certificate ifit does not meet norms and standards. The City’s role is to assist ECD centres in

becoming compliant in termsof planningandhealth and fire safety aspects, so that theyare able to meet the criteria for registration. The Social Development and Early Child-

hood Development Directorate is the coordi-nator, assisted by the City’s Planning andBuilding Development Management Depart-ment, Environmental Health section andFire and Life safety officials.“Legislation dictates that ECD centres are

safe, healthy and child-friendly spaces. So,

weneed to look at the physical infrastructureas well as aspects such as ablution facilitiesandplay space.Evenmore important, howev-er, is the quality of care and education thatthe children receive,” saysMayoral Commit-tee member for Social Development and Ear-ly Childhood Development Suzette Little.“That is why the City’s role also includes

training of staff, which covers a range of is-sues such as good governance, curriculumstandards and first-aid.”In October 2013, the City agreed to waive

zoning restrictions which had previouslymade it difficult for creches and aftercarecentres in informal settlements to operate le-gally and therefore access subsidies from theWestern Cape Government.“We are very aware of themany challenges

that ECD operators face in becoming compli-ant and that is whywe are putting all of thesemeasures in place to try and assist them asbest as we can,” Little explains.“Wearegoingout to communities to engage

with ECDs, but it is a two-way street and theyneed to meet us halfway. We are not out topunish anyone – there is a severe shortageof quality ECD facilities in the country andtheCitycanonlybuild somany. It is thereforein our best interests to help as many ECDsas possible become compliant, because ulti-mately it will benefit the childrenwho attendthese centres.”Formore information on registration, ECD
