PHOTO: PETER BEE Bold new step for HIV in Helderberg CASSY VAN EEDEN Although the Western Cape has the lowest rate of HIV transfer from mothers to infants at birth and in the womb, the Western Cape Health Department (WCHD) wants to bring the transfer rate down to zero in the Helder- berg. A ground-breaking new dual anti-retroviral treatment (ART) will be introduced at birthing facilities and clinics in the Helderberg from July this year and will “further reduce that rate sig- nificantly”, said Helene Russouw, spokesperson for the Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha. Maritjie Turck, the psych-social manager at Cotlands in Somerset West, said although they have not yet received this news from govern- ment themselves, it is true that the new therapy would significantly decrease the number of HIV positive babies that are born in the Helderberg. All birthing facilities will test the HIV status of all infants born to HIV positive mothers at birth. If they test positive they will be adminis- tered the new treatment. Russouw said that “this will allow for early initiation of anti-retroviral treatment in those infants who test positive, which significantly re- duces HIV-associated morbidity and mortality.” She also stated that HIV negative infants born to high-risk mothers “will receive a dual combi- nation of Nevirapine and Zidovudine as intensi- fied post-exposure prophylaxis and their HIV- PCR test will be repeated at six weeks of age”. Because infants will now be tested for HIV at birth in order to initiate the new treatment, means that an additional post-exposure treat- ment can be administered to high-risk infants who are HIV negative but whose mothers are positive. The Western Cape is the only province imple- menting the new treatment. Minister Theuns Botha said that the aim of the roll-out of the new dual therapy is to have “zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths”.
