Consumer insights company Pondering Pan- da surveyed 4 657 South Africans between the ag- es of 15 and 34 years and found that 43% of 15 to 17-year-olds felt that the legal drinking age should be lowered. Gerard Thomas of the Help Me Network in Somerset West said underage drinking is definitely a problem in the Helderberg. “There’s a lot of drinking in our schools - even at our primary schools.” Half of the young people who participated in the survey feel that underage drinking is a prob- lem. The Help Me Network sees about 45 cases a year of underage drinking. However, Thomas said that in most of these cases the clients have been “sent here by the court. There’s many children out there still drinking who won’t come here out of their own will.” Thomas said the youngest underage client that they have had was 10. Sarah Fisher, executive director of the drug treatment centre Helderberg Cares, said lower- ing the legal drinking age would be detrimental to the youth of Helderberg. “Young people often binge drink and binge drinking leads to risky situations.” Debbie Bell,, also from the Help Me Network, says binge drinking is the consumption of large amounts of alcohol in a short amount of time. She says girls are only fully developed at the age of 21 and boys only at 23. Bell said that under- age drinking “influences their mental develop- ment, so they can’t make mature decisions at that age.” She says the youth do not know “how to drink sensibly or respon- sibly,” which is why she says low- ering the legal drinking age would “not be a good plan.” Thomas said some of the reasons for underage drinking in the Helderberg are “poverty, family issues and families that are dysfunctional due to alcohol. Alcohol is also socially acceptable.” The survey also revealed that alcohol and drugs are believed to be the second biggest prob- lem in South African schools after a lack of re- sources and facilities. Fisher said underage drinking can lead to concentration problems at school. Thomas said binge drinking needs to be made less socially attractive to teenagers. Dealing with drug addictionCASSY VAN EEDEN

Discovering that someone closeto you is using drugs can comeas a shock.

Sarah Fisher, executive direc-tor of local treatment centre Hel-derberg Cares, says that how youreact to and deal with someone’sdrug use has a massive impact onwhether or not they continue touse drugs or not.If a family member, friend or

colleague tells you that theyhave a drug problem:Fisher says that the best thing

todo is to thankthemforconfidinginyou, then find themhelpas soonas you can. She added, “You needto support them while they go

throughtreatment, butdon’t try todo it yourself, because drug treat-ment is very complicated.”Fisher says that people should

never attempt to detox someonewithout professional help and shealso warns that people should notbelieve everything that they readon the Internet about drug addic-tion.She advises that people rather

approach a professional for accu-rate and effective information.According to Fisher the worst

thing you can do “is to tell themto ‘pull yourself together’, becauseit’s going to make them feelashamed and hopeless.”If you suspect a family mem-

ber, friend or colleague is usingdrugs:

Fisher advises that “you shouldnever plan to confront someonewithout a plan to help them.”She said the best way to get

through to the person is to explainthe signs or symptoms that youhaveobservedandhow thepersonhas changed.“Tell them that ‘itmakesme feel

very worried because you are notthe same person that you used tobe’.”She also says that confronting

the person while under the influ-ence of alcohol or drugs is nevera good idea.“Be kind, compassionate and

find out what help is available tothem,” she said.“A common misperception is

that treatment and advice is ex-

pensive and that the person has togo away for treatment,” says Fish-er. However, this is not the case.Helderberg Cares in SomersetWestoffersa freeout-patient treat-ment programme as well as infor-mation sessions that offer peopleinsight into:
