The City of Cape Town moved the 52 families worst affected by flooding to this site at the end of July – a move which was meant to take the families beyond of the floodline. Community leader Aubrey Mofana said all the homes had been flooded during heavy rains on Friday. This prompted the families and other community members to protest once again. “There was not one house that was not flooded. That’s why they are angry.” The community had protested against poor service delivery and housing in May. Ward councillor Johan Middleton said he received reports that homes in the area had been damaged due to the storm. He requested assistance from the City, but since it is the individuals’ responsibility to build and maintain their homes, the City was unable to assist the homeowners. Disabled left in coldLinda Visagie, a 49-year-old SomersetWest resident, found herself out on thestreet after being discharged from theBrickfield Hospital.NorahJuriessays thatLinda,whoisdis-

womanbeforeherhospital stay, was takento the house by a social worker. However, upon arriving, she found that the elderlywoman had died and that she was no long-er able to stay there. Norah claims that af-ter this, Linda was dropped at the post of-fice and where she was left.Sithembiso Magubane, spokesperson

for District Health Services and Pro-grammes at the Department of Health, says the social worker attempted to ar-range accommodation for the patient atMother Theresa’s Home before she wasdischarged fromBrooklynChestHospital.Shehadpreviouslybeenatthehome, but

“After the patient’s refusal, the socialworker tried to contact a friend or relativein Somerset West via a social worker, butitwasdiscovered that thepersonhaddied. She was taken to a number of different ad-dresses. After no success, she was then in-formed that she would be taken back toBrooklyn Chest Hospital, which she re-fused, explaining that she would wait forher friend. She was duly left in SomersetWest according to her wish.”It was at this stage that Norah was in-

formed of Linda’s plight. She attempted tofind Linda a spot in a night shelter, butas Norah says, “everything was full”.SeenasLindadidn’t evenhaveablanket

to keep her warm, Norah eventually ar-ranged for Linda to stay at her home. Sheis currently still trying to find amore per-manent arrangement for Linda.According to Magubane, “the social

worker went beyond her call of duty to as-sist the patient but also had to adhere tothe patient’s wish.” He added that Brook-lyn Chest Hospital has a pressure on bedsand cannot afford to accommodate pa-tients who have already been discharged.
