According to Constable Mthokozisi Gama, spokesperson for the Lwandle Police, the inci- dent occurred at about 07:10. The ambulance was leaving George Street Ext to get onto the N2 in the direction of Cape Town when it allegedly skipped the red traffic light and collided with the small white bakkie. Gama says the bak- kie was travelling from Grabouw in the direction of Cape Town and crossing a green light at the time. According to witnesses, the ambulance was travelling at a high speed without any sirens on when it crossed the red traffic light. It is believed that the driver of the bakkie lost control of the vehi- cle due to the impact of the colli- sion, and hit a Toyota Quantum taxi travelling from Hlathi Drive. The driver of the bakkie was in- jured, as were five other passen- gers from the bakkie, one of whom sustained severe injuries and had to be airlifted to hospital. The ambulance driver and a passenger were also injured and had to be transported to hospital by ambulance. According to a statement re- leased by ER24, 11 occupants of the minibus taxi sat on the road- side after the incident. A case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated. Less than an hour later a sec- ond accident occurred on the N2 when the driver of a silver Volkswagen Polo sedan reported- ly came speeding past the acci- dent scene. According to Gama, the vehicle appeared to be heavi- ly loaded as the rear was hanging close to the ground. Police at the first accident scene found the vehicle suspi- cious and gave chase. According to eyewitnesses, the driver lost control of the vehicle in an attempt to get away and the car overturned and landed on its roof at the traffic lights opposite Somerset West Business Park. The driver (29) was arrested and abalone worth an estimated R502 650 was found in the boot of the VW Polo. The car and the aba- lone were confiscated. The driver appeared in the Strand Magis- trate’s Court on Monday 4 August on charges of being in possession of abalone and reckless and negli- gent driving. Anyone with information may call Detective Captain Andries Geldenhuys on 082 469 7719. The scene of the first accident on the N2 on Friday. Lwandle hearings continueJAMEY GORDON

Public hearings into theLwandle evictions re-sumed at the Lwandle com-munity hall this week.

Residents affected by theSA National Roads AgencyLimited’s (Sanral) forcedevictions on 2 and 3 June tes-tified last Tuesday andThursday. On an emotionalfirst day of the local hearingsthe commission heard ac-counts of what had happenedon the day of the evictions.

Evictees told how the po-lice moved into the townshipwith armoured vehicles, stunbombs and tear gas deter-mined to evict them and de-molish their homes. This, knowing they were given nonotice of the evictions andhad nowhere else to go. Someof the residents were at workand children were at school.

Xoliswa Masakala (28) pre-sented heartbreaking testi-mony of how she and her hus-band Albert (38) were man-handled and assaulted bypolice. The commission hadto break when a tearful andemotional Masakala brokedown while testifying.

Inquiry chairman DenzilPotgieter had asked her toidentify herself in variousmedia photographs whichcaptured her with her breastsrevealed while rushing to herhusband’s aid.

According to Ward 85Councillor MbuyiseloMatha, Masakala felt deeplyhurt and angry.

The hearings resumed onThursdaywithstudentSisan-

da Mbayimbayi (26) taking tothe stand first. Mbayimbayiis the mother of a four-year-old boy, Koyola, who lives inthe Eastern Cape and was liv-ing alone at the time of theevictions. The commissionheard that she, like many oth-ers, had moved to the openland in December 2013. Sheexplained that she was stay-ing with her sister and herfamily as backyarders andthe structure they were liv-ing in was too small andcrowded.

Without notice, she wasforcefully removed and herhome dismantled in Febru-ary. After the first evictionsMbayimbayi said that fivestructures remained, so sheand many of the other evict-ees decided to rebuild theirhomes before being evictedfor a second time. She saidher home was destroyedalong with all her belongingsand furniture inside.

The inquiry has spent thepast few days collecting resi-dents’ statements.

Last Monday and Tuesday, the inquiry heard testimo-nies from Sanral, variousNGOs and the Sheriff of theHigh Court, who effected theremovals through a court in-terdict. Both the City of CapeTown and the province optedfor written submissions andreserved their right to com-ment on the inquiry’s find-ings.

Two hundred temporaryhomes for the Lwandle evict-ees were erected on the San-ral-owned land they were re-moved from by the end ofJune. However, only one ofthe evictees had been able tomove into her new homesince its erection.

According to Matha thelaying and drying of the con-crete floors in each homeposed a delay, as well as thefact that most residents donot have any furniture.

Matha says that some of theevictees’ belongings thatcould be saved were stored ata storage facility. This issuewill form part of the inquiry.
