Members of the Cape Town K9 Unit and Stellenbosch Crime Intelligence arrested a19-year-oldman for being in possessionof abaloneworth aboutR500 000. The suspect’swhite Audi was seen on the N2 near Lwandle in the early hours of 12 November.A high-speed chase soon ensued. The team chased the car to Eerste Rivier beforepulling it over and discovering 2 545 units of abalone in the boot. In an attempt toescape from the police, the suspect also drove into and damaged a police vehicleas well as a civilian vehicle.

Medication shortage toaffect the HelderbergThe Western Cape Depart-ment of Health (WCDH) hasannounced a severe medica-tion shortage in the province.

This shortage, which accord-ing to the Department is as a re-sult of the failure of the NationalDepartment to manage pharma-ceutical contracts, will unfortu-nately affect clinics in the Hel-derberg.The shortage can be expected

to affect health facilities for the

next two months. The WCHD is working on dis-

tributing current stocks evenlythroughout the province and isrepacking certain medicines in-to smaller patient-ready packsizes. The Department is also perus-

ing alternative suppliers duringthe shortage.“I apologise for the inconven-

ience that will result during thistime but earnestly request thefull cooperation of all those af-

fected to minimize the impact ofthe unfortunate situation,” saidWestern Cape Health ministerTheuns Botha. The WCHD is also requesting

patients to ensure that they util-ise all existing medication intheir possession before askingfor a repeat prescription.Patients who experience any

problems should contact thehealth facility closest to them orcontact the WCHD on021 483 8408.

Child safety seats now mandatoryThe new amended Nation-alRoadTrafficAct (NRTA)now requires infants (de-fined as 0 to three-year-olds) to be transported inappropriate child seatswhen travelling in a pri-vate car.TheNRTAhadprevious-

ly not made any provisionfor the protection of chil-dren in this age category.Donald Grant, minister

of Transport and PublicWorks, says an analysisconducted by Safely Home, using auditedfatality data from the Forensic PathologyServices of theWestern Cape Departmentof Health, showed that the majority(53,42%) of the bodies of young children

who died as passengers inroad crashes were recov-ered outside or under thevehicle.“The presence of the

bodyoutside thevehicle isa near-certain indicatorthat the child was not re-strained or was improper-ly restrained, as ejectiondoesnotoccurwhenanap-propriatechildrestraintisused,” says Grant.“The presence of the

body inside the vehicle, however, is not an exclusionary factor indetermining if the childwas restrained ornot.”He says the analysis therefore erred on

the side of caution by default.

The data is indicative of a minimum oftwosmallchildrenbeingkilledonWesternCape roads eachmonthafter being ejectedfrom a vehicle in a road crash.Passengers ejected from a crash face a

75% chance of being killed due to groundimpact injuries and collisions with otherobjects and vehicles. The fine for people who offend by not

transporting children aged zero to threeyears in appropriate child seats must stillbe determined.“Children who are unrestrained, even

on an adult’s lap, will be seriously injuredor killed, even in a slight collision.“We therefore appeal to all motorists

and parents to buckle young children inappropriate car seats, and protect themfromthehorrificinjuriessufferedbyunre-strained kids.”

Great do it yourself ideas for ChristmasCASSY VAN EEDEN

Christmas is just around the cor-ner and the time has come to startpreparing gifts for friends andloved ones.

But it has been a difficult year fi-nancially for many people and buy-ing extravagantChristmas giftsmaynot be an option for you.You can howevermake some truly

special gifts, which may be more ap-preciated than something store-bought. Here are some ideas to getyou started using things you mayhave around the house.A coupon book:This is a great one for children to

make for their parents. Cut out a fewpieces of cardboard or paper to thesize of a R100 note. Decorate eachpiece of paper or cardboard any wayyou wish, using glitter, colour pens, orwhateveryourheartdesires.Thenwrite something on each piece of pa-per that therecipientcancashin.Forexample, a coupon fordoing thedish-es, a foot rub, a hug or anything elseyou think the personwould like. Sta-ple the pieces of paper together onone side and you have a great gift forsomeone special.A memory jar:Use an empty jar that you have

around the house. Decorate it anyway you like. Write ‘2015’ on the jarusingapermanentmarker or glitter-glue. Cut up a few small strips of pa-per to come with the jar. Every timethe recipient has a good day or an ex-citing event in their lives, they canwrite it down and put it in the jar. Then on Christmas 2015 they can go

through the memories of the year.Pocket warmers:Use whatever material you have

around the house from old socks toruined tablecloths and cut out twoheart shapes. Sew them togetherleaving a small hole open. Fill theheart bag with rice or barley. Thesehearts can then be warmed up in themicrowave and placed in jacketpockets to keep icy hands warm oncold days.Snow globe:Use any empty jar that you may

have around the house. Fill it withwater and sprinkle a generousamount of glitter into the water.Stick a small toy such as a snowmanorasantawithsuperglueontothelid.

Then glue the lid onto the jar andmake sure it is 100% sealed. Thenturn the jar over and shake.Personalised mug:Buy a plain white mug (or any col-

ouryou like, butwhite is easiest) anduse paint and permanentmarkers todecorate it. You can write the per-son’s name on it or a special quote.Cookie jar:Fill an empty glass jar with sweets

or bake your own biscuits. Decoratethe jarwith ribbons, raffia or glitter.Fabric bracelets:Use old pieces of t-shirts and cut

them into thin strips, about 50 centi-metres long.Plait thestripsuntilyouhave a braid long enough for a brace-let. Tie the two ends together.

A great gift for anyone is a memory jar.Using and empty household jar you cancreate a gift that can be used all year long.

Homemade snow globes are a fantastic gift for children and are easy and cheap tomake.

Using old t-shirts (or other stretchy fabric)you canmake bracelets for Christmas gifts. These are perfect if you do not have muchtime to make something.

A coupon book is quick and easy to make and may be far more appreciated thana store-bought gift.

Pa is net so naïef.

Fix your toilet yourselfYour toilet will not stop running. Callinga plumber, especially after hours, can bean expensive exercise.

However, there are some tricks you can tryyourself first thatmay save you time andmon-ey.The flapper:The constant running of water in your toilet

happens when the flapper leaks through thehole at the bottom centre of the cistern. This means that either the chain is twisted,

snagged or caught on the handle arm.The ideal chain length has some slack when

the handle arm is at rest. Ensure the flapperchain is untangled and flush the toilet a fewtimes to make sure the chain does not re-tan-gle.As an emergency measure, if the chain has

broken, you can use a paperclip or cable tieto repair the chain.Running overflow tube:Another typical cause for constant running

is when the cistern’s water is flowing over thetop of the overflow tube, situated in themiddleof the cistern.First check the water level and make sure

that it is about four centimetres below the top

of the overflow tube.If youdiscover thatwater is flowingover the

tube, thismeans that the adjustable float is notworking properly. You can readjust the float by increasing the

length of the rod that connects the float to itsarm. If this does not solve the problem then it is

best to replace the float with a new one.SOURCE: www.doityourself.com

There is no need to call a plumber right away if yourtoilet will not stop running. You can try these easysteps yourself first and possible save yourself a lotof cash at the same time.

Business safety this seasonAs we head into the holidays, many businessowners may appoint additional employees tosupport staff during the festive season. In recent weeks there have been a number

ofnewspaperreportsof robberiesatbusiness-es in big malls and in smaller complexes.“It is important that owners and employees

discuss safety concernsandhowto reduce therisk of robbery or theft,” says Rob Dale, man-agingdirectorofADTSecurityWesternCape.Small retailers are especially prone to loss-

es as a result of shoplifting, burglary and in-ternal theft.Dale says these safety tips will help protect

the business:) Have two employees open and close the

business in the morning and at night; crimi-nals havebeenknown to force staff inside andget them to open the safe or tills.

) Always arm the alarm system when thebusiness is closed.

) Leave empty till drawers open overnightand at weekends.

) Do not keep high value items in the win-dow as they are a temptation to smash-and-grab.

) Install safety glass as a deterrent for bur-glars.

) Carefully check bank notes and creditcard details; be aware of the buyer’s body lan-

guage and be suspicious if they appear nerv-ous.

) Shoplifters often work in teams; one willdistract staff while the others take items oropen tills.

) If someone tries to commit a robbery donot try to stop them. They are often desperateand dangerous people, and most carry weap-ons.

) If youhaveCCTV, set it to record24hoursa day.

) Keep store rooms locked when not in useand install good quality security gates.

) Position CCTV cameras towards thedoor/counter and high-value goods. Installconvex mirrors that allow employees to easi-ly observe all corners and aisles.

) Use electronic tags that cannot be re-moved by a non-employee without damagingthe merchandise.

) Toprotect against employee theft, screenall employees before hiring them - it is thebest defence against internal theft.

) Install silent alarms and panic buttonsto alert notify police and give them a betterchance to catch perpetrators.

) Work with a security supplier who canoffer a tailor-made solution to your securityneeds. Location, store layout, stock and cus-tomer profile make a business unique.
