This follows after about 300 resi- dents of other areas in Lwandle ille- gally had started setting up camp on a stretch of land belonging to South African National Roads Agency Lim- ited (Sanral) since 4 January. Since then, residents of two complexes in Guldenland, Strand have been in the process with Sanral to obtain an in- terdict to have the squatters re- moved. On Monday hundreds of po- lice and law enforcement officers de- scended upon the illegally occupied area to oversee the eviction process. The residents were barricaded on the pavement across the road and watched helplessly as their homes were being broken down. Captain JP du Toit from the Lwandle police, says the sheriff of the court was sent out to enforce the eviction order, which Sanral had obtained on 24 January. The Helderberg Gazette was unable to obtain the contents of the court or- der. When the Helderberg Gazette ar- rived on the scene, crowds of onlook- ers were restrained by police barri- cades. Masses of law enforcement officers, dressed in riot gear, were lined up facing the crowds with shields. The officers were also geared with gas masks, teargas and fire- arms. Attempting to salvage their homes and possessions, a few residents car- ried sheets of corrugated iron from the site before their homes were be- ing demolished. One of the affected residents, Mothito Ntandi, says she now has no place to stay. “We will have to go to the streets or live under bridges.” A number of structures were marked with red spray paint to prevent them from being demol- ished. According to Du Toit, the own- ers of these structures have Sanral’s permission to live on the land as their previous homes in Pholile Park were flooded. Du Toit adds that a con- tingency plan is in place to prevent the illegal occupants from re-erect- ing on the site. The Helderberg Ga- zette asked Sanral how many illegal structures were demolished and when the permission was granted for the legal structures to be erected, but at the time of going to print, no com- ment was received. *Also see videos on www.bolandga- zette.co.za. Make sure you cross the road safelyCASSY VAN EEDEN

Recently, I have nearly been involved in several acci-dents as a result of school children crossing the roadunsafely. Children have often walked in front of mycar without even checking the road before they cross.I have also seen learners running accross the N2 atpeaktraffichourswithvery little regard for the trafficaround them. According to the South African Nation-al Roads Agency (SANRAL), nearly half of the deathsthat occur on South African roads are of pedestrians.

Chief Inspector of the City of Cape Town Traffic De-partment, Eric Swanepoel, says the departmentpresents lectures about road safety at all the schools.Swanepoel says the department also spends timetraining both scholar patrols and part-time traffic at-tendants.

Here are some important rules that everyoneshould follow when crossing a road:

•Find a safe place to cross the road, like a zebra orpedestrian crossing. If possible, use bridges that runabove roads to get across it.

•If you cannot find one of the above, choose a placewhereyoucanseeclearlyalong theroad inbothdirec-tions.

•Once you have chosen a safe place to cross, stopand stand on the pavement, you should be out of theway of the traffic but still able to see all around you.

•Look both ways: Take time to look both left andright before you cross.

•Do not rush. First look around and listen for cars

before you start walking.• Wait until the traffic has passed and only cross

when there is a safe gap and you are sure that thereis enough time for you to make it all the way acrossthe road.

•Keep looking both ways and listening for carswhilst you cross.

•Make sure drivers can see you, especially at night.Wear brightly coloured clothing and do not jump intothe road from behind cars parked on the road sides.

•Neverrun.Runningacross theroadmaymeanthatdrivers do not see you and are not expecting you tocross the road.

•Never expect that a car will stop for you to crossa road. Always wait for a car to come to a completestop before you cross in front of it.

•Remember, it’s better to arrive late than not at all.

is onlangs voltooi.

In Macassar is twee besondere kunstenaarsCASSY VAN EEDEN

Renting RDPs is not illegalCASSY VAN EEDEN

Residents of Lourensia Park in SomersetWest are unhappy with, the “illegal occupa-tion” of houses in the low cost housing resi-dential area.

According to City of Cape Town’s MayoralCommittee Member for Human Settlements,CouncillorTandekaGqada, theCity“prohib-its the sale of a government-provided housebefore it has been owned for eight years. Ifa seller does try and sell it, the ‘new’ ownerwon’t be able to take official transfer of thehouse,” she says.

However, whilst the city advises that resi-

dents retain their lowcosthousesasanasset, they do not prohibit unofficial sales beingmade and “often the house stays registeredin the name of the original owner eventhough money has transferred hands,” saysGqada.

According to the councillor this is not clas-sified as corruption, “there is also no restric-tion on the renting of a house and it is notillegal to do so,” she said.

As soon as an RDP house has been trans-ferred to a “beneficiary,” said Gqada, it be-comes the beneficiary’s house and is “theirsto use how they see fit according to any rele-vant legislation.”

perseptuele stimulasie ontvang;• emosionele probleme by kinders,

R-klasse (nou ’n

noodsaaklikheid om kinders skool-gereed te kry) is daar nie altyd opge-leide onderwysers nie en word kin-ders nie behoorlik voorberei vir gr.1 nie;

kind inderdaad volgens sy vermoëpresteer of onderpresteer, enso-voorts.Soms stel ouers hoër verwagtinge

as waartoe hul kind in staat is.

Verder is emosionele ondersteu-
