The out- come will be announced on 4 December. The current minimum wage is R70 a day, which is not sufficient according to farm workers. Paul Mokwana, spokesperson of the Lourensford employees, who embarked on a protest last Tuesday, said many of them struggle to pay rent, transport and school fees, and keep up with rising food prices. He said the Lourensford farmworkers cur- rently earn R72,50 per day and are demanding that it be increased to R250. One of the employees, who asked to remain anonymous, says, “Our people work in the heat, and only for R72 – it is not worth it. And when it rains, we cannot work. Food is expen- sive and we have children at school.” Another worker added that changes need to come from government level. “The govern- ment doesn’t work for us. They need to come here and see.” Lourensford CEO, Phillip du Plessis, says that employees earning R70 are “on the lower end of the scale and there is a large percentage of workers who earn more.Across the province, workers have been ne- gotiating for an increase to R150 a day and Cosatu had rejected an offer from farmers of R80 a day last Monday. Farmworkers receive one of the lowest minimum wages in any sector in the country, says Brigit Schwarz, spokesperson for Hu- man Right Watch. In March, the Gazette reported that farm workers received an increase of 9%, which brought the minimum wage up to R70 per day. The next increase is due in March 2013 and would be according to the consumer price in- dex plus 1,5%. This would mean an increase of around 7%. Lourensford was the only farm in the Helderberg to experience strike action, although 16 towns in the province were affect- ed. Du Plessis confirmed that negotiations were under way with the workers, and that there had been no further strikes at the farm. However, both Cosatu and Mokwana say if they do not receive R150 in negotiations, the strikes will continue. ‘Government doesn’t work for us’ ‘Government ‘Government doesn’t doesn’t work work for for us’ us’ A small group of farmworkers at work at Lourens- ford Wine Estate yesterday (Monday).

Skool moet deure sluitNICOLE MCCAIN

SLP families homeafter fireThe four families affectedby the fire inRiem-vasmaak in Sir Lowry’s Pass have rebuilttheir homes and moved back into them. The Helderberg community has opened

theirhearts to thevictimsthroughdonationsof food, clothing, building material and la-bour.The fire, which was allegedly started by a

candle in Julia Petersen’s house just before21:00 last Saturday, destroyed the home sheshares with eight others. Her 72-year-oldmother, Maggie, was admitted to the Helder-berg Hospital for burn wounds and was dis-charged the following day. Community lead-ers have on several occasions requested forelectricity for the settlement, which was es-tablished when the City of Cape Town relo-cated families worst affected by flooding tothe site in July. Ernest Sonnenberg, Maycomember Human Settlements says theplanned incremental development area is anEskom electricity supply area. “The humansettlements directorate has asked Eskom tosupply electricity, but this will be subject toEskom’s approvals and timelines.”

October with English papers, and the matrics have sincewritten maths, history andaccounting, amongst othersubjects. The exams are dueto end on 28 November.GordonHigh School princi-

Helderberg school dropouts a concernHelderberg high school principals are wor-ried about the rate of dropouts at theirschools.Gordon High, which has almost 1 250 pu-

pils, hadalmost 70 leaveby theendofSeptem-ber, says principal Bernard Simons.Macassar Secondary School principal Yu-

suf Abrahams, says that to date he has had63 of his 770 pupils leave the school. “Thisis a lot, but there are usually more – around90 to 100 every year.”Eric Titipane, principal of Khanyolwethu

High school in Lwandle did not have thenumber of school leavers available, but says

the school does have a high number of pupilswho drop out.Bronagh Casey, spokesperson forWestern

Cape MEC of Education, Donald Grant, saysthat no records are kept for pupils droppingout of high school. However, a retention rateis calculated for the entire province, takinginto account how many pupils started grade1 and finished grade 12. This is currently at56%.All the principals cite socioeconomic rea-

sons as a factor in pupils dropping out ofschool, and that pupils also often leave be-cause they struggle academically.

“Wehavealotofdropouts ingrade10,”saysTitipane. “Some of the pupils relocate, but inmany cases it comes down to the livelihoodof the families. Some just can’t afford to bein school, even though we’re a no feesschool.”The principals also say that drugs, gangs

and teenage pregnancy also play a role in pu-pils dropping out. The lack of a completed ed-ucation will hamper pupils later in life, saysTitipane. “The consequences are far reach-ing. We need literate adults.”According to Abrahams the solution lies

with parents, and Titipane agrees, saying

that a culture of learning needs to be promot-ed at home. “There’s a disintegration of thefamily, and this leads to a lack of guidancefor pupils.” Titipane also thinks the commu-nity need to have indabas and forums to en-courage learning.Abrahams says that pupils who drop out

very seldom return to school.Simons, however, says hewelcomes pupils

back into the school if they’ve dropped out.“We’ll let them back, depending on how

much work they’ve missed. Many pupils re-turn the followingyear, especially after preg-nancies. All of us make mistakes.”
