Nomzamo eagerly awaiting new clinic ASHRAF BOOLEY A new two-storey community health clinic will start to take shape by October this year on the corner of Solomon, Majola and Nombula Streets in Nomzamo. The new clinic will have a treat- ment area for chronic and acute con- ditions with specialist rooms for treating acute conditions and wound care. It will also have consultation and counselling rooms, a pharmacy, an infectious disease unit with a ded- icated Direct Observation Treat- ment (DOT) room and a women and child health unit. A secure, sheltered waiting area for patients arriving before opening hours, with full access to toilets, as well as a large multi-purpose room for education, training and physical therapy will also be included. According to Percy Frederic of the Nomzamo Community Trust, which held a stakeholders’ meeting last week Monday to discuss the process it took to secure a new clinic, the trust identified the need for the health facility in early 2008. He says the need for a new clinic was raised as the existing Ikhwesi Health Centre was no longer able to adequately cope with the ever-grow- ing populations of Lwandle, Nomza- mo, Asanda Village and other sur- rounding areas. “With the rental income of the Nomzamo business centre, we man- aged to buy a piece of land which we donated to the province. The land was donated on condition that they build a clinic. Our donation of the land to the province made them more receptive to agreeing to build a new clinic in the area. This shows that the community is willing to look after themselves. “The beneficiaries of the Nomza- mo Community Trust is the commu- nity in general and we utilise the money of the trust to benefit the com- munity,” says Frederic. The facility will provide approxi- mately 1 500 m² of floor space and will include a lift, says Faiza Steyn, direc- tor of communications for the pro- vincial Department of Health. The need to build two floors, she says, is because of the site’s size of 2 020m². The estimated cost of construction will be between R25 and R30 million, says Steyn. The clinic is scheduled for completion early to mid 2015, and operating hours will be from Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 16:30. “It is our aim to make health serv- ices as accessible as possible to the people of the Western Cape,” says Western Cape health minister Theuns Botha. He says the provin- cial authority is currently construct- ing the largest number of health fa- cilities ever in the history of this province. Many residents feel the need for an additional and larger clinic than the existing Ikhwezi Health Centre in Nomzamo. Some residents told the Gazette that waiting times could stretch from 05:00 to 16:00 for some patients. Nomzamo resident Nomalizo Pi- kashe, who was involved in estab- lishing Ikhwezi Health Centre, says she is very excited about the new clinic. “It will have a positive impact on the community because at present they panic when they get turned away from the clinic. “The staff will also be thankful for this because the long queues put a lot of stress and pressure on them as well.” The Early Childhood De- velopment (ECD) Forum from Good News Crèche, along with the children of the crèche, visited Stad- ford Old Age Home in Strand to sing praise and to pray for South Africa’s former president Nelson Mandela. BACK TO SCHOOL SURPRISE: A surprise was in store for pupils at Strand Secondary on theirfirst day back at the start of their second semester last Monday. Brendyn Alloys from the organisationReclaiming Youth announced to over 1 000 pupils that Grade 8 to 11 pupils stand a chanceof winning a bicycle at the end of the year. “All you have to do is attend school every day fromtoday onwards,” Alloys announced to pupils. Names of pupils who attended school every day bythe end of the year will go into a draw. The lucky pupil, randomly selected, will walk away witha brand new Raleigh Rock 5 mountain bicycle sponsored by Cedric Miller from Millers Outfitters,Strand. “We believe in rewarding excellence,” announced principal Gavin Phillips to pupils. Healso added that they will take pupils’ behaviour into account when the winner is selected. Alloyssays this is a way to encourage pupils to be in school every day and to help reduce school dropoutrates. Illegal dumping gets City’s attentionASHRAF BOOLEY

After the Gazette recently featured a sto-ry on illegal dumping that has been tak-ing place in Macassar for the past fewyears, theCityofCapeTownsent fiveCityofficials to the site to investigate the is-sue.

This was done along with Cedric Hen-dricks,chairpersonoftheMacassarEnviron-mentalandNatureConservationSocietyandCoastal Forum, who initially raised the con-cern.

Hendricks sayshegave theofficials a shorttour of Macassar to point out the various are-as where the dumping occurs.

“Iwanted thewaste removed fromthe sitesas well as ‘no dumping’ signage erected invarious parts of Macassar to make peopleaware that they aren’t allowed to dump onthe site,” explains Hendricks.

He also claims that he has seen toxic wastedumped on the site, but says the City refutedthese claims.

Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, ExecutiveMayoralCommitteemember forUtilityServ-

ices at the City ofCape Town, saysthey will be level-lingoff thedumpingand the offendingitems found at someof the sites will beremoved.

He adds that anyexcess sand will beutilised to coverholes caused bysand mining in thepublic open spacesin Macassar.

Regarding theerection of “nodumping” signage,Sonnenberg claimsthat there was novisible dumping atsome locations, pointed out by Ce-dric, where he wanted the signage erected.

“The erection of ‘no dumping’ signage isdone solely at the discretion of the City ofCape Town in areas identified as experienc-

ing regular dumping.“TheCitywillmonitor the area andboards

will be erected on sites that experience regu-lar dumping,” he says.

This photo was taken recently where the dumping site along New and BermudaRoads is in the process of being cleared. PHOTO: ASHRAF BOOLEY

Is what’s on the label in the tin?Have you noticed achange in theway foodsare labelled lately? This may be because

the effects of the latestfood labelling and ad-vertising legislation, emphasising the word-ing of labels and howproducts are adver-tised, are becomingmore and more promi-nent.South African food

manufacturers areobliged to state onlyfactsonallof theirprod-ucts, using labels to ed-

ucate consumers, to beclear and to avoid con-fusing consumers. An example would be

not stating that a prod-uct is strawberry whenit is in actual fact onlystrawberry-flavoured.Some mandatory in-

formation include in-structions for use, netcontents, a tabulatednutrient analysis, useby date and allergens. The Gazette asked

some readers if theythink food manufactur-ers comply with this

legislation, if they haverecentlycomeacross la-bels not containing themandatory informa-tion, and whether theycare.

“I sometimes readwhat is on the la-bels, but not al-ways. This actuallymakes me awarethat I always haveto lookat labelsasthere are a lot ofimitation prod-ucts on themarketthat are not theoriginal product,”says Carren Timm.“For example, itdidn’t alwaysstate on the labelsthat a product ischocolate fla-voured but in-stead said that itis actual choco-late. And if some-thing is processed then it should be stated that it is. Allproducts should also have the best before and sell bydate on them and that is not always the case.”

“I do care whether productsare original or imitation. Iwouldn’t pay expensive fora product that is imitationand advertised as original.I didn’t know about theselatest regulations but I’mglad it’s in place,” saysAndiswa Sotyali.

Odwa Zepe says he doesn’t thinkthat all food manufacturers applythese regulations. “In many casesfood products don’t state best be-fore dates,” he says.

Laeeka Jappie says she some-times checks her food labels, though not always. “However,I do care whether I am beingsold imitation products and it’sadvertised as original.”

‘Decriminalisesex work’I want to echo the recent findings of the SouthAfrican Commission for Gender Equality, inthat I believe most of the problems relatingto sexworkerswould be better solved, thoughcounter-intuitively, by the decriminalisationof sex work. This has been tried successfully in other

countries.Decriminalisation would firstly allow sex

workers to operate fromwithin legitimate es-tablishments, rather than having to hangaround on the street.Decriminalisation would also allow sex

workers to find clientele more discreetly, asthey could advertise their services in, for ex-ample, classified advertisements instead ofstanding on the street. Finally, itwouldalsoallowtheMacassarpo-

lice to better focus their limited resources onactual crime, such as robberies or rape.I think that if we think carefully about it

as a community, it is possible to find solutionsto theproblemsmentioned in thearticlewhilestill respecting the rights of the sex workers, who are after all, just people trying to earna living, likeanyoneelse.Theyaren’t stealing;their services are based on mutual consent.

“Ek voelso gelukkig. Nou kan ek met my nuwe pop-huis speel.” FOTO’S: ASHRAF BOOLEY

Hier is symet haar pragtig toegedraaideverrassing.
