W ill you please shut up? No, not all of youbut just one small sector of thepopulation who do not seem to know
when to put a lid on it. I refer to those people inaudiences who whoop and wolf whistle to excess.
I like to show my appreciation for a show, ofcourse, but I think that applause andcheering has a time and place. When didwe start whistling and whooping duringa performance? It would seem thatthere are people out there who aretriggered into such action at theslightest thing.
It starts with the cheering as anact takes to the stage. In the theatreit can be the first entrance of a TVstar. What a bore; it just intrudes onthe plot – if they have been cast insomething that requires a plot, which isnot always the case.
In concerts, a certain amount ofwelcoming applause is nice. As Julian Clary says:‘‘I love a nice warm hand on my entrance.’’ Butthen moments later as that initial applause diesdown and the band strike up, the whooping,clapping and whistling starts again. This time it’sin recognition of spotting the title of the firstnumber after a few bars. Well, well done to you forrecognising a tune played by an act you likeenough to pay money to see. The fact that yourspontaneous outburst of approval is actuallymarring the performance is my problem.
Then there are the fans who only want to heartheir favourite tunes. Fair enough I guess, except
why do they then chat through the songs theydon’t know or like? Chattering really gets mydander up; it’s rude on so many levels.
But nothing jars quite as much as the ‘sing-alongers’. You know who you are. They simplycannot resist joining in and I accept that theymay be having a really lovely time. But I do notpay good money to hear a member of theaudience singing in my bloody ear.
I’m not sure which is worse either, thechronically tone deaf or the accomplished singer who decides to throw in a harmony of their own. Aargh!
Please, save me from that.Of course, there are acts that
encourage this sort of behaviour. Youwould think after years in the business that
they would know better. Surely they realise thateven a few members of the audience who haverhythmic dyslexia can provoke a disaster.
Am I alone in this, or do the majority of peoplethink that live performance these days is simply akaraoke opportunity? Because if they do there aresome great places to do that here in Brighton, andas a karaoke fan you might even see me there.

If you asked me whether I want to give my sons a life of disappointment,frustration and hopes dashed, I‘d obviously answer no. Why then, am Iconsidering educating them in supporting a football team, when I know
what this means? Tying up your own mood with the fortunes of others? Now I don’t want to alienate readers by talking about my specific team, but I may scatter a few clues.
I’m not even talking about ‘proper’ supporting. I’m very much an ‘armchair’fan, attending very few games, but still getting my fix by a process of readingsports pages, TV watching, listening to Radio 5 Live. The word ‘armchair’ iswell named. If I’m not evenin the crowd shoutingabuse or encouragement, Ihave as much influenceover the result as a pieceof living room furniture.
I remember listening asa cup game againstLiverpool went topenalties. The Boy – thenaged two months – wasasleep on my shoulder. Listening to football on the radio can be fantastic,but it can also be unbearably tense. Particularly penalties. My team lost, of course.
It was an education in life for The Boy on my shoulder. Not so much ‘My First Camera’ as ‘My First Intense Disappointment’. If Fisher Pricepackage this up for Christmas, I’m not sure it‘s going to fly off the shelves.
Over the years, disappointment has taken many forms. Sometimes it issimply expectations raised too high. Other times, the ref doesn’t notice whenthe ball bounces a foot into the goal against the league leaders, or when wewould have got into the Champions League if it wasn’t for a dodgy lasagne(these are not topical events, but it shows the bitterness lingers).
The only fact The Boy knows so far about football is ‘Mummy thinks it’sboring.’ Can we just stick to playing without supporting? Out in the garden,The Boy kicks the ball with gusto, equally thrilled whether it’s gone onto thecompost heap or in the goal. I should treasure this and not lead him into thealtogether bleaker hobby of scanningnewspapers for goal difference or the Saturday Night anti-climax ofavoiding the score only to watchyour team lose on Match Of The Day. (I end up second-guessing each editorialchoice. If they showed theball going out for a throwin, is it about to be agoal? That’s no life topass on).
It’s Sunday afternoon,nearing the deadline forthis column. I listen to myteam on the radio and theybeat Wigan 9–1. Forget all thenegativity! We’ll probably winthe Premiership! I’m smiling, New Baby is smiling (although it‘sprobably wind). This is our year!
For the single parent, Christmas time is full of many heavy concerns.Most importantly, ‘How the hell am I going to get a sitter for all theseChristmas parties?’ Ho Ho Ho. I’m not worried about money, I’m cooking
a roast and I’m not going to overspend. It’s just a roast with a few crackers,isn’t it? Hello Pound Shop! You don’t need expensive crackers; people expectthem to be rubbish. If the jokes were good in a cracker, then Michael McIntyrewouldn’t sell 1000’s of DVDs at Christmas. Where do cracker jokes comefrom? Do they farm that work out to a freelancer? “Ernie, ask your dad towrite some gags for the 2009 crackers, yeah?” I’m imagining Ernie’s dad then submits jokes, and aftergetting rid of the misogynistand racist jokes, what’s left isa page of jokes about duckswalking into chemists orsomething. I propose instead,crackers should offer words ofwisdom – heart-warmingquotes to help you through thestrain of a family Christmas day: “Families are like fudge... mostly sweet with a few nuts.” Anon.
All I am actually worried about is being happy for the few days overChristmas. Those few days that seem like an eternity when Tescos isn’t open.All year round, I manage lasting days without a supermarket trip, but in theChristmas void I just want to know I can go if I want to! But no, you have towait ‘til 27 December to buy bread! But a sofa or some jeggings is easy; thesales start Boxing Day. It’s only 48 hours before normal life returns, but theChristmas void makes me feel trapped. No wonder we all over-eat, there’snothing else to do. Suddenly I have to go on walks and watch TV’s idea ofwhat I find Christmassy. I don’t want to see Home Alone 3! I want old blackand white films and Nina Simone on loop while I overcook the chicken!(Forget turkey, you can’t make a turkey taste better than chicken, regardlessof what Nigella tries to convince you). In Dickens’ books they’d have hadchicken if they’d known modern day, poultry-farming, fattening-up methods.The toddler doesn’t know how many presents to expect or if a bike is betterthan a Barbie. All she can sense is if Mummy is happy. And, wow, that she’sallowed chocolate out of a tin! Kids really pick up on atmospheres. I just wantto create a nice atmosphere and not be walking on eggshells for days. Even my own eggshells! I could party for weeks, then collapse for two days,moody mum, only happy after a pint of Baileys. But all I wantfor Christmas is the sound of giggling laughter and alittle bit of Baileys. But if it takes a pint...

It’s barely a year since the launch of Sawyerand Co. Chris Sawyer and Adam Farrell boughtthe business from Ralph Tingley, their previous

They have helped fund The West Hove PrimarySchool Christmas event; been involved in a raffleto fund a playground, paying for the first prize;and done similar things for Portslade Infants.They also helped send kids to a theatre eventfor The Rockinghorse appeal.
Sawyer & Co have perhaps bucked the trendand built a success out of a floundering market.Whilst all around them the profession wasbreathing doom and gloom, Sawyer & Co were –and are – talking of success.
How did they do it? Well, surely it must bedown to hard work, focus and professionalism.But maybe it’s just a little bit more; maybethese are just nice guys that people likedealing with. Their figures surely point in thatdirection. That and the fact that with Sawyer &Co it’s not all just take but there’s plenty ofgiving too.

T he work of art students at Lancing College,together with Worthing area schools the SirRobert Woodard Academy and Davison CE
High School for Girls, will be showcased in aspecial Christmas exhibition, the Youth ArtCollaborative, at Worthing Museum this month.
This will give the public an opportunity todiscover and enjoy the most exciting art beingproduced by young people in West Sussex, fromboth the independent and state education sectors.The exhibition will explore the breadth and qualityof teaching and resources available to local sixthform art students today. Each participating schoolwill exhibit about thirty works.
The themes of Lancing College’s show are‘Abstraction in Architecture’ and ‘UrbanInvestigations’. There will be paintings andworks in mixed media (fine art) andphotographs by AS students.
The fine art students at Lancing have beenstudying the neo-gothic architecture of thecollege and distilling it, to produce excitingabstract images. They began by looking at thevisual language of many artists, including the

‘prison’ series of etchings by Piranesi in the 18thcentury, and the work of Kandinsky, the earlyabstract painter. They have been inspired bymodern British masters including John Piper,whose pictures based on buildings were oftenabstracted into complex composite images, andalso by Frank Auerbach’s responses toarchitectural features.
The students then made observationaldrawings with pen and wash, in situ, in placessuch as Lancing Chapel, with its soaring nave.Having finished these initial studies, they took onthe challenge of transmuting them into abstractand expressionist images which still contain theessence of the form, volume and scale that is feltwhen entering a building. The works, to be shownin Worthing, represent the early and middle stagesof a major project, which will run until January.
The photographs in the exhibition will showindividual responses to urban landscapes. As asource of inspiration, the students began byresearching the visual language of internationalphotographers from the UK, USA, Germany andJapan. These include Nick Wood, who documented

the building of the London Eye, and AndreasGursky, acclaimed for his gargantuanarchitectural colour images taken from highvantage points.
Lancing’s Art Department is outstanding. It hasan impressive record of producing students whobecome very successful designers, photographers,architects, art historians and painters.
Art plays a major part in school life and, asLancing College has a flexible time-table, manystudents can study art to A Level, whether theyintend to pursue a career in art or not. A numberof students combine art with maths and physics,others with humanities.
In recognition of the outstanding achievementsof the Art Department, Lancing Collegecommissioned the highly regarded LCE Architectsto design a stunning new Art School. The buildinghas extensive studio spaces, and all artisticdisciplines are under one roof, so pupils canundertake multidisciplinary projects on a largescale and do not have to put away work inprogress. The new building has won a SussexHeritage Trust Architectural Award. It is acontemporary, energy-efficient structure that isin harmony with its unique surroundings and hasunrivalled views over the South Downs to the seain a designated Area of Outstanding NaturalBeauty. The Art School recently celebrated its firstanniversary, with a visit from the Duke ofGloucester, who is an architect himself.
The Headmaster and staff at Lancing Collegetake a holistic view of each pupil’s education, witha curriculum that enables all students to fulfiltheir individual potential. Academic studies are ofprimary importance, but outside the classroomstudents are encouraged to develop many otherskills and talents. This culminates in excitingresults, with pupils gaining places at topuniversities while pursuing activities such assport, music and drama to the highest levels.

In the current economic climate, insurancecompanies are focusing on reducing payoutsand investigating legitimate claims. So, how
does one make a claim? Latest Homes speaks toPaul Edmonds of Insurance Claim Solutions tofind out more.

Paul’s philosophy“I worked as a senior loss adjuster for ten years,”Paul says about the philosphy behind InsuranceClaim Solutions. “I was tired of declining andadjusting claims, achieving fee targets and servicestandards. A silver lining“When the documentation did arrive, it was

Small print
Insurance companies are becoming increasinglystrict on the small print in the policy. Often, thepolicyholder’s notification of the claim will berecorded. It is important to appoint arepresentative who understands the correctpresentation of the claim, to secure acceptance ofthe claim and early interim payments.
“We recently helped a successful public housein Brighton following a fire in their kitchen,” Paulsays. “We were on site from 7.30am the followingmorning, helping and advising the owners onemergency works and the potential problems theymight face throughout their claim. It was essentialto make sure that nothing was done that may givethe loss adjuster cause to turn down the claim. Bythe time the loss adjuster arrived we could sitdown and confidently discuss the claim which isnow being brought to a successful conclusion.”
