A few thoughts on a Sunday afternoon as I take a little break from the Patriots-Cowboys game….

This past Sunday, a glorious fall day with blue skies and temperatures in the low 70s, I took a drive to the Oak City Outreach Center in downtown Raleigh. Oak City Outreach is a place for those

who are hungry to come for a free meal. Members of our parish community were there to help serve. There were long tables set up with sandwiches, hard-boiled eggs, chocolate chip cookies, salad, watermelon, and bottled water. Every few weeks or so our parish helps out there by preparing and serving the food. There was a 7-year-old girl who was there helping; she had heard about it somehow and wanted to become involved. Many thanks to all who are involved in the Oak City ministry. I was glad to see it in action.

You may recall the week before last we had our annual Francis-Fest. Something like 1,600 people were here for it throughout that afternoon. Our Support Circle family was here that day and we heard back from them. One of the younger ones said it was the “best day ever” for her. Support Circle is a ministry here at St. Francis that forms a sort of circle of support around a family that might be homeless and looking for help getting their lives in order. Very nice that FrancisFest, with its games, food trucks, tasting stations, and all kinds of other activities was able to bring so many people together like that.

You might be familiar with the Justice Theater Project which puts on plays throughout the year many of which are right here on our campus. Last weekend here at St. Francis I saw A Lesson Before Dying which is based on the novel by Ernest Gaines. It’s intense, and very good. It’s set in Louisiana in the 1940’s and is about a man death row. We are privileged to have this kind of top-notch theater available to us. Performances continue this weekend and next. Recommended!

Finally, next Sunday is the annual Harvest Moon Festival sponsored by our preschool. It runs from 12:30 to 2:30pm, and all are invited. There are still a few spaces left for students in our preschool which is a little jewel on our campus. See page 8 more information. Blessings on your week!

Laudato sí Summary: Chapter One The first chapter of the encyclical is a frank look at the facts of our world so that the reader might “become painfully aware” of the ways we have not been providing protection and care of the very place we call “home.” This chapter is not meant to be abstract analysis but to “turn what is happening to the world into our own personal suffering and thus to discover what each of us can do about it” (19).

The bulk of this chapter paints in detail a somewhat dire diagnostic picture of what’s happening: a vari-ety of forms of pollution, increasing deforestation, a disturbing warming of the climate, depletion of natural resources (especially quality drink-ing water), loss of biodiversity, the decline of quality of human life and relationships, and the global inequal-ity gap between the poor and the rich (20-52). There is consensus among scientists that this picture is not fabricated but a real glimpse into the unsustainable “state of the union” of our world.

While other chapters elaborate on root causes that the pope sees linked to these symptoms, this first chapter begins to name them. First and foremost is a “throwaway culture” that ruthlessly consumes, exploits, and discards human life

and our natural resources. He also indicts the all-pervasive “techno-economic paradigm” of the last two hundred years that emphasizes above all things efficiency, speed, technology, commodification of goods and services, and quick and easy profit. While it seems that we lack a culture and leadership to confront this cultural crisis, this chapter ends with the Pope ask-ing us to cast off the distractions that dull our consciousness, listen to the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor, and begin to dialogue about solutions.

Questions

1. Where and how do we hear the “cry of the earth and the cry of the poor”? Does this awareness affect our habits? What do we do with our feeling of powerlessness and indifference? 2. Why has leadership been weak regarding the world’s environmental crisis? 3. What can we do this week to participate less in the throwaway culture and techno-economic paradigm?

All Souls Mass Monday, November 2 7:00pm

During the liturgy we will honor all who have died during the past year. As the deceased’s name is read, a relative or representative will present a photo (5x7 or smaller) to be placed near the altar. After Mass all photos will be on display for the month of November. If you have a loved one who has died since last October and would like their name to be read at mass, email Tresa Pickup at [email protected].

Memorial Garden Mass Saturday, November 7 9:00am

This beautiful memorial Mass is to celebrate the life and faith of all those inurned or memorialized in the St. Francis Memorial Garden as well as those buried in the St. Francis portion of the cemetery at Raleigh Memorial Park. All are welcome to attend. Mass is held outside in the Memorial Garden so please dress accordingly. Mass will be followed by a cider reception.

Book of Remembrance

Throughout the history of the Catholic Church, November has been the month in which we remember our deceased. This November, as in years past, we will make available our Book of Remembrance. It will be on display throughout the month for all to view, to remember, and to pray for those whose names are inscribed. This is a wonderful way to honor the dead and demonstrate that truly “life is not ended, but changed.”

To have your loved one’s name added, simply fill out the All Soul’s Offertory envelope or email Tresa Pickup at [email protected]. A new request must be made each year. A small donation is welcome, but not mandatory.

Journeying with Grief Through the Holidays Sunday, November 1, 2:00-4:00pm Anthony Hall Founders Room

Community Prayer Book

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiv-ing, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Phil 4:6-7

Every time we gather for liturgy we are surrounded by the Body of Christ. Some of the members of Christ’s body are celebrating joys, some facing trials, some experiencing peace and others pain. Wherever we are on our journey, we are called to bring these petitions before God and others. One of the ways we can do this is with our community’s prayer book. This book is located in the sanctuary near the statue of St. Francis and is available for anyone to record their petitions. We will pray for all the prayers listed in this book at each Sunday liturgy.

Prayer Line Ministry

Sometimes the prayers on our hearts are quite personal. For those times, consider enlisting the support of our Prayer Line Ministry.

You can stop by the Steward-ship Center and write your confidential prayer request and drop it in the box. Then it will

be gathered and sent to our team who will pray for your intentions. If you're more comfortable on line, you can send your prayer request via our website and it too will be gathered so our team can join their prayers with yours. Look for this icon on the bottom of the St. Francis home page to submit your request, ww.stfrancisraleigh.org.

Sharing the Fruits of Ministry

Trevor Thompson, Director of Justice and Peace

T hey both start from the same place, folks

getting married and the tribunal at our diocese. Both believe in the permanence and partnership of marriage.

Both believe that all marriage is valid. But life doesn’t always work out according to plan.

Recently, we had Vikki Newell on campus. Vikki is the Director of the Tribunal in Raleigh. She has also been through the process to receive a Decree of Nullity. She describes it as a compassionate process that all begins with a phone call to the diocese. Each peti-tioner is assigned an advocate who will walk with them throughout the entire process. And the meetings with the advocate don’t need to take place at the diocese. To give you an idea of how many folks go through this process - there are 90 advocates in our diocese!

The whole process focuses on who the couple was when they were courting and getting married, because that’s the part that’s important to the question of validity. Each person has to fully, consciously and freely join in the covenant of marriage. There are questionnaires to complete for the couple and for witnesses who knew the couple around the time of the marriage.

There’s no time limit on how long you have to have been married, how long you’ve been divorced, whether you were married on a military base or in another country. There are accommodations for most any situation, even if you don’t know where your ex-spouse lives now. And the decree of nullity only affects the two people who got married. Not the validity of their children, not their children’s sacra-ments and not their access to the Eucharist.

There are new rules/norms now. There’s no charge for the process. And on December 8, 2015, there is a big change. If both parties agree that the marriage is invalid and if the tribunal agrees that the marriage is invalid, there’s no need for the case to be referred to the Archdiocese in Atlanta.

So if you’re wondering if you should start this process, please call Vikki Newel at 919-821-9759. If you’d like support while you go through this process, consider joining our DivorceCare group. Visit www.stfrancisraleigh.org/divorce-care/.

W e are excited about

beginning our ninth year of partnership with Habitat for Hu-manity in building homes in Wake County. Each year is a bit different and so our trend contin-ues. This year in-stead of building one house over the course of the fall and winter, we are now a part of the Building on Faith initiative where several homes are being constructed simultaneously in one neighborhood by a coalition of faith communities. No more will committed volunteers be sent home early because of unforeseen construction delays or missing supplies. When multiple homes are being built, there is plenty of work to be accomplished in a day.

In early August, St. Francis parishioners participated in a touching and inspiring home dedication and ground blessing for the completion of the first of the six Building on Faith homes. It was powerful to see the joy in the Famoroti family as we dedicated their home. It was fun to see the excitement in the Abaali and Boudra families as the grounds of their homes were blessed.

There are currently three Building on Faith homes in various stages under construction and two more Building on Faith homes that will begin soon. As a part of the Catholic Coalition, St. Francis has committed to the following workdays.

Provide 15 volunteers to work from 8:30am to 4:00pm November 14 and December 5. We look forward to seeing you!

As part of the contract with every Habitat homeowner, the families commit to a minimum of 250 sweat equity hours in which they work on their own home as well as on the homes of other soon-to-be Habitat homeowners. We also need volunteers to prepare lunches for our SFA workers on those days. We ask that you prayerfully consider joining us and your fellow St. Francis parishioners for a day or two of building - not only building a home - but building our St. Francis community within the larger faith community of Wake County. For more information, please contact Bob and5 Diane Steinbeiser at 919-846-8026, [email protected].

T he church tour was a very special time for our 4s and 5s. They were fortunate to have the opportunity to visit the church while not in use to learn all about all the wonderful

symbols used in our Catholic Mass.

In comparing “God’s house” to their own houses, the children were invited to notice the many similarities. The children were told that we come together in God’s house to pray and share a special meal together. We talked about how, at our homes, we might wear special clothes, set our tables, and prepare a special meal when guests are coming. They had the opportu-nity to see the priest’s vestments, the altar server’s robes, and the unconsecrated hosts. They stood at the ambo, baptized a baby doll in the baptismal font and smelled the sacred oils used at baptism, confirmation, and anointing of the sick.

While many children go to church with their parents and families, after their church tour, they should understand a little bit more about why we do what we do!

“Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! ...”

Psalm 150:1-6

A Special Church Tour

T he Franciscan School is committed to making our school a safe and caring place for all students. Children learn best when they feel safe, respected and cared. As part of the school’s anti-bullying

program that was launched last year, the Franciscan School was proud to host psychologist Jim Bisenius. Jim is a nationally known speaker and creator of a proactive anti-bullying program known as Bullyproofing at the school on October 5.

Bullyproofing is a practical and effective bullying prevention program. Jim instructs students, teachers, and parents in ways to eliminate bullying behavior. With 19 years of experience as a child and adolescent therapist in Ohio, Jim has taught his methods to more than 950 schools nationally. He has received a “Child Advocate of the Year” award and a “Violence Protection Award”.

Three student assemblies were facilitated by Jim, one for Kindergarten-2nd grade, one for 3rd-5th grade, and one for 6th -8th grade, along with a staff training session. Parents were also invited to hear Jim speak at the school’s Home and School Association meeting that evening. Parents walked away with concrete tools to help their children, and themselves, given that bullying is a global issue. The sessions were made possible in part by funds raised last spring for the teacher grant program.

Please join us for our Fall Open House on Sunday, November 8 from 12:45pm to 2:00pm, beginning in Jacoba Hall. Tour our school’s beautiful facilities, talk with faculty and staff, and learn more about the curriculum and opportu-nities available to students in grades K-8. To register for the Open House or for more information, please contact Lura Tysiac at [email protected] or 919-847-8205x469.

T he 2016 Annual Offertory Appeal has been focused on introducing and recommending FaithDirect as an electronic giving option.

Faith Direct is a new and exciting way for you to support our parish offertory and second collections. Faith Direct enables you to make your church contributions through direct debit either from your checking/savings account or through your credit/debit card. No more writing checks or searching for envelopes on the way out the door.

Now you can apply the convenience of direct debit to your parish offerings in much the same way as you may now use it to make your mortgage, car, or tuition payments. Faith Direct also offers you personalized offertory cards to replace your envelopes for the collection basket.

You can click on the “Giving” link on the parish website to enroll securely or make changes to your account online.

We are aware that this choice isn’t preferred by everyone. To answer your question, “What do I do if I don’t want to use the egiving option?” We are grateful for the method that you have chosen to make contributions to the offertory. Your contributions, whether by check, stock donations, or other means are appreciated and important to the parish. You do not have to complete a pledge card and return it this year. You will continue to get quarterly reports to keep track of your contributions. Contact Toni Hammes at 919-847-8205x265, [email protected] with any questions about the Annual Offertory Appeal.

Cross Train and Cross Road, our middle and high school youth ministry programs, began their year with the 1st Annual Papal Games. It proved to be an epic night celebrating the Pope’s visit to the US. By moving through a series of stations, the youth learned about the Pope, our church’s teachings, and its rich history. Activities included the Swiss Guard Gauntlet, Sistine Chapel Painting Challenge, Chair of St. Peter trivia, and the Conclave sprint! The youth also made a video message to send to Pope Francis. Visit www.stfrancisraleigh.org/formation to have your youth join in the fun!

The Young Adults Charis Retreat 35 young adults gathered at Montreat Conference Center for a weekend of fellowship and reflection which focused on how the transitions we go through in life – new job, big move, relationships beginning and ending – are informed by the Pas-chal Mystery of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. Keep an eye out for more information about our next “Transitions” retreat in 2016 at stfrancisraleigh.org/charis.

Cross Walk, our small group forma-tion program for children in grades K-5, started the year off with special programming by Bricks4Kidz. By building, creating, and working together, the children deepened their understanding of the Gospel message that Jesus wants all to belong to his family, live in solidarity with one another, and build each other up. In a hands-on way, they experienced how we are all linked together and should serve one another. For information visit www.stfrancisraleigh.org/cross-walk.

Confirmation Over 170 youth and adults received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday, October 3 during two beautiful liturgies celebrated by Bishop Michael Burbidge. For more information about confirmation preparation, email jennifer.fiduccia @stfrancisraleigh.org.

On-Going Toiletries Drive Many of our low income brothers and sisters within our community and those we reach out to, find that their monthly income just can’t stretch far enough beyond food and rent to cover basic toiletry needs. On an on-going basis we will collect toiletries here at St. Francis to be given to struggling folks. Please drop off new (and new-ish) travel size or any size soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, lotions, creams, shaving gear, etc. in the bins in Clare Hall and our Preschool. Every contribution no matter how small will make a difference in someone’s life. Thank you!
