Observe what is right, do what is just; for my salvation is about to come, my justice, about to be revealed.

— Isaiah 56:1

This Monday, August 28, the Church will honor Saint Pius X. St. Pius was born into a humble family in Riese near Venice, Italy in 1835. His given name was Giuseppe Sarto, and no one would have guessed that this son of a postman and a seamstress would one day become Pope. But he felt the desire to be a priest from an early age, and he later struggled to attend the seminary. In those days, it was not always easy for boys from poor families because their parents were obliged to pay for their education. Once ordained, Giuseppe Sarto was so successful as a pastor that he quickly distinguished himself and rose in the Church. He was eventually consecrated Bishop of Mantua, which was then a very run-down diocese in Italy with financial problems and serious issues of morale. But he managed to successfully revive the diocese and put it in order economically. At the age of 58 Giuseppe Sarto was made Patriarch (Archbishop) of Venice, and soon after that he was offered the red hat of a Cardinal. On the death of Pope Leo XIII, a conclave was called to select a new pope. Despite the many good contenders at that time, on August 4, 1903, Giuseppe Sarto was elected to the Papacy. He took the name Pius X and his motto was “to renew all things in Christ.” Always known for his holiness and simplicity, Pope Pius was also very opinionated. On the negative side, he was quite intolerant of any dissent in the Church, and he strongly suppressed innovation and modernization in theology and Biblical studies. At the same time, Pius X – perhaps due to his many years of working among ordinary people -- had a great pastoral sense. He knew what people needed in order to bring them closer to Christ and to the Church. Pius X famously said that Catholics should not only pray at the Mass, but that they should pray the Mass itself. He really wanted Catholics to understand the liturgy, what was happening at Mass. As a result, he promoted the use of ‘hand missals’ or the personal missals that so many of us have today. These books, now available in fancy permanent editions or in paperback, allow us to follow the readings and the prayers of the Mass, and they greatly enhance our appreciation of the liturgy. During his papacy, Pope Pius X also officially lowered the age of reception of Holy Communion. Our present custom of receiving First Communion at around age 7 is due to his influence. He constantly encouraged the people to come frequently to the celebration of the Eucharist, and to receive the Sacrament daily if possible. In the last two years of his papacy, Pius X was involved in diplomacy, doing all he could to prevent the onslaught of World War I. He was deeply distressed when war was at last declared, and he died soon after in 1914. Not long after his death, a number of miracles were attributed to his intercession, and the cause for his canonization began immediately. He was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1954, the first pope in 400 years to be declared a saint. Fr. Ulysses

P. Ulises
