30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Torah includes no fewer than 613 commandments, 365 of them “thou shalt nots.” Jesus gives just two, both of them “thou shalts”: love of God, love of neighbor. These commandments do not replace the law, but they do sum it up.
■ FIRST READING: God gives the people a code of conduct whish asks a great deal of them. They are called to be like God, who singles out the weak - the stranger, the widow, the orphan, the poor - for his special protection. The law gets very specific at times - there are even laws about birds’ nests and architecture (Deuteronomy 22). The example of the neighbor’s cloak in today’s reading is a case in point. But all these details are significant, because they help hammer the point home: the law is not just for the big things, the Decalogue; the law pervades every aspect of life.
■ RESPONSORIAL PSALM 18 calls God by many names - strength, rock, fortress, deliverer, shield, place of refuge, and more. Even more significant, perhaps, than the names is the word that precedes each of them: my. God delights to be called our God.
■ SECOND READING: St. Paul encourages the Thessalonians by reminding them of their history, how they received the word with joy in spite of great affliction. Their powerful example of faith is known everywhere; their faith encouraged others to believe. Now Paul uses this reminder to give new hope to the Thessalonians themselves.
■ THE GOSPEL: A Pharisee comes to Jesus to test him by asking him which commandment is the greatest. It is a question that is clearly intended to entrap him. But Jesus reponds without hesitation, directing the scholar to two Old Testament passages, to the Shema, the great prayer found at Deuteronomy 6:5, whish was recited by observant Jews morning and evening and at other times of the day as well. This commandment is to love God with one’s whole being: heart, soul, and mind. The second commandment (Leviticus 19:18), love of neighbor, is “like it” (Matthew 22:39). These two commandments do not replace the others, but all the others depend on these. How do we love God? We love Him by loving our neighbor.
Reminder that during the month of October, we place special emphasis on the role of Mary and praying the Rosary. Throughout the month, we invite you to remember our community, young and old, in your prayers especially in praying the Rosary.

From the Pastor’s Desk… Dear Parishioners, Fall is upon us with cooling temperatures and changing leaves. It is a time when nature appears to die so it can be reborn in the spring. As November approaches Catholics’ thoughts turn to those who have gone before us in the prayerful hope that they too, will share in the eternal life promised those who believe in the Lord. Historically, the custom of setting apart a special day for intercession for certain of the faithful on November 2nd was first established by St. Odilo of Cluny at his abbey of Cluny in 998. From Cluny the custom spread to the other houses of the Cluniac order, which became the largest and most extensive network of monasteries in Europe. The celebration was soon adopted in several dioceses in France, and spread throughout the Western Church. It was accepted in Rome in the fourteenth century. While November 2nd remained the liturgical celebration, in time the entire month of November became associated in the Western Catholic tradition with prayer for the departed. Lists of names of those to be remembered were placed in the proximity of the altar on which the sacrifice of the mass is offered. Here at Saint Thomas the Apostle we will join the rest of the Catholic world in praying for our deceased relatives and friends. I encourage you and your families to begin thinking about and planning to pray for those you love, who have gone before you to the Lord. There are several opportunities to do so.
1. Plan to attend Mass on All Souls Day, November 2nd. 2. Enroll the Names of the deceased in the Novena (9 days) of Masses beginning on All Souls Day
by returning your All Souls Envelope with the names inscribed in any parish collection before November 2nd.
3. Write the names of the faithful departed in the “Book of Rememberance” located near our baptismal font in the center of our church. They will receive special mention in our Sunday Mass intercessions throughout the month.
We all belong to the “Communion of the Saints” and we are all called by our God to holiness and eternal life with him. May our prayers for each other help each one of us on the journey of life and faith. Love in the Lord,
Rev. Charles J. Miller, Pastor

Dear Parishioners and Friends:
For the last 17 years our church has been blessed to have an outstanding traditional concert. All have enjoyed the fine musical work of the Garden State Concert Band and their guest vocalists. We have set it for Saturday, December 10, 2011, 7PM with reception following. To achieve this objective we need to have a Souvenir Program Journal that will raise the necessary funds. Please see the form below and make your contribution check to St. Thomas the Apostle. Thank you, PAUL ALONGI
