“The LORD has done great things for us;

We are glad indeed.”

— Psalm 126:3

Saint Charles Parish San Diego / Imperial Beach Page Two

It’s that time of year and the debate begins again: Can a Catholic celebrate Halloween? First of all, we have to ask what is Halloween? The word “Halloween” is a contraction of “All Hal-lows Eve”, better known in today’s language as the Vigil of All Saints Day. All Saints Day, November 1, is our annual celebration of those brothers and sisters of ours who lived lives of heroic virtue and are now rewarded with eternal life with God. They look on the face of God and, as St. John puts it, “become like him, for we shall see him as he is.” They range from St. Stephen, the first martyr, to the parents of St. Therese of Lisieux who were just canonized last week. They are indeed the holy ones of God and we spend the day rejoicing that members of family have made it home. We reflect on the holiness of their lives and ask God for the grace to imitate their faithfulness and virtues so that we too can make it to our true home. The party, of course, starts the night before. Just as with Christmas and Easter we begin the celebration early. It is entirely appropriate then to recall the memory of the saints, eat candy, drink wine (if you are of age of course), sing songs, play dress up, etc. In short, have a party! What we want to avoid are the secular and cult like practices that non-believers have put into our feast. By these I mean fascination with ghosts, vampires, and scary things. Also to be in-cluded are cultish elements like La Santa Muerte which is a pagan, blasphemous, anti-religious practice. Instead, I encourage you to take back our feast. Teach your kids the reason we celebrate the saints, God’s holy ones. Encourage them to pick a patron saint whose qualities they admire and whose prayers they could benefit by receiving. And lastly, celebrate the day for where the saints have gone with Christ we hope to follow. We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified. Romans 8:28-30.

+Lord Jesus, we your people pray to You for our priests. You have given them to us for OUR needs. We pray for them in THEIR needs. We know that You have made them priests in the likeness of your own priesthood. You have consecrated them, set them aside, anointed them, filled them with the Holy Spirit, appointed them to teach, to preach, to minister, to console, to forgive, and to feed us with Your Body and Blood. Yet we know, too, that they are one with us and share our human weaknesses. We know too that they are tempted to sin and discour-agement as are we, needing to be ministered to, as do we, to be consoled and forgiven, as do we. Indeed, we thank You for choosing them from among us, so that they under-stand us as we understand them, suffer with us and rejoice with us, worry with us and trust with us, share our beings, our lives, our faith. We ask that You give them this day the gift You gave Your chosen ones on the way to Emmaus: Your presence in their hearts, Your holiness in their souls, Your joy in their spirits. And let them see You face to face in the breaking of the Eucharistic bread. We pray to You, O Lord, through Mary the mother of all priests, for Your priests and for ours. Amen.

Who is FIAT? FIAT is a team of parishes and schools in South Bay that exists to provide quality Catholic education. Our goal is to nurture the heart and mind of every student, so that they live, learn, and serve with the compassion of Jesus. “Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.’ Then the angel departed from her.” (Luke 1:38) The Archangel Gabriel told Our Lady that she was to bear the Son of God and name Him Jesus, Mary completely surrendered herself to the Divine Plan — Fiat. St Charles Parish will raise funds for the children in our own church, through the “Blessing Our Future” Annual Collection Education Fund. Our goal is to bless every family with access to Catholic school, and watch them grow toward a promising fu-ture. All it takes is $1/day! FACT #3 ABOUT CHILDREN WHO ATTEND CATHOLIC SCHOOLS 34% of adult Catholics who attended Catholic primary school and 39% of adult Catholics who attended secondary school attend Mass weekly or more of-ten.

Romanos 8:28-30.
