STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE

Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life—a marvelous promise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world

might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

children, youth, and adult faith formation classes, for St. Charles registered families, during our regular office hours: Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. Requirements for enrollment: Provide a copy of the Certificate of Baptism of the stu-

dent. Complete a registration form (available at the Catechetical

Ministry Center or on the website). Schedule an interview with the Director of Catechetical

The wish list of the nuns who run these charities of 2 different groups are: ♦ For Asilo San Juan Pablo II would like to ask for adult

diapers regular and pull ups medium and large sizes. ♦ For Sisters of Charity- Florido, (St. Teresa of Calcutta's

nuns) poor children and Santa Teresita, home for girls would like to have 200 school supplies such as: compo-sition note books (without spiral); pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, rulers, crayons, back packs, pen holders (pouch), writing pads, etc.

The children from Rosarito live in a canyon, a very poor neighborhood. Once before, I visited them during their cate-chism class. The catechism was held in a small space with 4 poles, thin galvanized roof, dirt floor, no chairs so everyone had to stand. But the Sisters of Charity went on every Satur-day during school days to teach the children the Words of God.

FORTALECIDOS POR EL PAN DE VIDA

Hoy retomamos el discurso sobre el “Pan de Vida” del Evan-gelio según san Juan que comenzó hace dos semanas. Juan alude a los ancestros de los judíos que comieron el maná en el desierto. Hoy pen-saríamos sobre todo en el pueblo de Israel caminando por el desierto, pero los judíos fieles también conocían el relato de Elías que escucha-mos hoy. Elías comió y bebió en el desierto, y con la fuerza de aquel alimento, el ángel del Señor lo envió en su viaje de cuarenta días y cuarenta noches (la cifra bíblica que simboliza un tiempo de prepara-ción). De la misma manera que el alimento que recibió Elías en el de-sierto, Jesús le dice a su público que él es pan para la vida del mundo. Es muy importante que sigamos escuchando a Jesús después de su promesa de vida eterna, sin duda es una promesa maravillosa, pero

esta “recompensa” no es la única razón para darnos un festín con el Pan de Vida. También vamos a la mesa con el fin de recibir fuerzas para el camino de la misión, de manera que el mundo entero pueda tener vida en la plenitud de Cristo. Los niños de Rosarito viven en un cañón, un barrio muy po-bre. Una vez, los visité durante su clase de catecismo. El catecismo se llevó a cabo en un espacio pequeño erigido con 4 postes, techo delgado galvanizado, piso de tierra, sin sillas y todos estuvimos de pie. Pero, las Hermanas de la Caridad iban todos los sábados durante los días de escuela para ense-ñar a los niños la Palabra de Dios.

Mantenimiento del Estacionamiento- El estacionamiento está programado para ser sellado y alineado el lunes 13 de agos-to y el martes 14 de agosto. Habrá acceso a la iglesia ambos días para la Misa diaria.

El miércoles, 15 de agosto es Día Santo de Obligación. Habrá misas en Ingles: Martes, 14 de agosto: 5:30 p.m. (Misa de Vigilia) Miércoles, 15 de agosto: 7:30 a.m. y 5:30 p.m.
