Q: I thought the world was over reacting to this Coronavirus craziness, but then my Church does the same thing. And I don’t like that the Precious Blood was taken away from us. And which Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist are we going to keep and which are we going to let go? And for how long are we going to do this? A: This past week, even before the diocesan policy, it had come to my attention that a significant number of parishion-ers were not choosing to receive Holy Communion during Mass from the cups. This meant the Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist had to consume more Precious Blood than usual after distribution. We thought it was because of the fear of the flu. Our theology teaches that when we receive either species, under the appearance of bread or wine, we receive the full-ness of the 'Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity' of our Lord Jesus Christ. So, we did not stop distributing the Precious Blood, just Holy Communion from the cup. After consulting with our vicar, Very Reverend Howard Campbell, we found out that many other parishes in our dio-cese have taken the precaution to eliminate distribution of the cups, and so did we. With it being flu season and so many people taking every precaution to avoid being infected it was determined this would be our best response. Then the diocese released their mandate and our decision was af-firmed. Starting on Tuesday of this past week on weekdays and weekends we halted the distribution of Holy Communion from a common cup. We will reevaluate this issue after East-er. Then the diocese also went farther to suggest that at the sign of peace we avoid touching each other by shaking hands which is our local custom. The sign of peace is an optional part of the rite, so sometimes it may be skipped all together. Actually, our Church has ritualized the preservation of the integrity of our Sacraments and the washing of hands in the

rubric of Holy Mass. We have always been very conscience that we are handling food and every precaution should be taken to preserve the health of our members. There is precedent for only serving Holy Communion under a single species. On every Good Friday Holy Communion is only distributed under one species, and it was only recently that the Church, after hundreds of years of not, began to distribute Holy Communion under both species. The Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist will be receiving an updated schedule to reflect this new local custom.

We welcome you to Sunday Mass. So many of our good people came on Ash Wednesday to receive Ashes and to begin the Holy Season of Lent. It was wonderful to see so many of our children with their parents. Today’s Gospel for the Second Sunday of Lent is the Transfiguration of the Lord Jesus on the Holy Mountain. The Lord strengthened the faith of Peter, John and James and the vi-sion would empower the Apostles to witness to Christ after the Resurrection. Fr. Farnan always reminds us that the beautiful stain glass window in the rear of St James Church depicts the mystery of the Transfiguration. May this mystery of our faith guide our new parish into a bright future. Prayer is very important in Lent. There are many types of prayer in our Catholic Church. We are fortunate here at Divine Redeemer to have daily adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament in the chapel of St James Church. Please come and spend time with the Lord. The Lord in the Eucharist will surely transform your life. Clergy in the Church pray the Liturgy of the Hours daily. Many of the faithful do the same. You may find the prayers on the web (Universalis.com) or you might purchase a book that contains morning and evening prayer (Religious goods store, Amazon etc.). We should pray daily so that the Lord knows how much we love Him. I strongly recommend the praying of the Way (Stations) of the Cross. The Stations are prayed every Friday in Lent at 1:30pm at St. James with the St. James School children in attendance, 4:00pm at St. Mary Church and 7:00pm at St. James Church. Please volunteer to help at the Fish Fry at St. James and bring your family and friends to have dinner. This is a great fundraiser but we need your support. Keep the days of Lent holy. Pray daily in the home and always involve the children. We are always think-ing of our sick members and their families who care for the sick and infirm in so many loving ways. Perhaps you could help them out in some way this week. I am sure the families of a sick loved one would greatly appreciate a kind gesture. Your priests pray daily for all of you wonderful folks. Love, Fr. Dave
